View Full Version : A waste of cyberspace

Ok, I was seraching on Google for more great LOTR sites. Then on about the 15th page, I found something that made me scream and then laught in pity.
The # 1 Anti Lord of The Rings Website (http://www.expage.com/antilotrpage).
My first though was, "The Internet has a dumb*** on their hands."
I decided I would check the site out. It was the worset site I have ever seen. Obviously, the person that made this website was a child, but come off it!!! This site was, also, obviously poorly researched. The mini-quiz was very very stupid (no, not just bad, stupid). Plus, what is with that picture?
The only good thing about the site was the guestbook. Most of the signings were people defending LOTR.
Check the site out and tell me what you think, but be carful, this site is horriable.

First of all, this poor soul has fallen into the trap of expage.com which allows no webdesigning freedom. Secondly, I have been to far better anti-Lord of the Rings websites than this particular one. Thirdly, it seems to based on the movie. This person really should give the book a chance. He may be converted to our cause (and help us to take over the world! ahem... smilies/smile.gif )

I think we have a problem.
After deep thought, I've realized something. After seeing this site, it seems that non-Tolkienites get temporarily weakened. The more they stare at it, the weaker they get. Well, I think this site was made to turn non-Tolkienites into anti-Tolkienites. Thus, means that the website is a trap made by a cult.
It also seems that the Golden Retriever and the crapy MIDI music are the icons of their organization.
THEY MUST BE STOPPED!!! smilies/mad.gif

OK, the clues are all there. The mention of Elijah Wood, and "my sister Kelly". And the obvious fondness of dogs. It's perfectly clear that this site was built by Jack Osbourne!
It's all there: the name dropping, the jealousy, (since his sister gets to hang out with Elijah Wood, and he got snubbed by Natalie Portman), the lack of talent. It has to be...wait, do the Osbournes have a Golden Retriever?

I found that website interesting.
Interesting as in 'designed by a young boy'.
I agree with the movie part -- most people seem to refer to Lord of the Rings as 'the movie', not realizing that there was a book written around 50 years ago. People never give the books a chance, and soon they begin to hate Lord of the Rings for no reason at all. If you are going to be such a moron about it, you should at least have a valid reason.
This is supposed to be for newcomers, so I'll stop before I wind up into a long, well-written essay about whether Legolas's hair was black, yellow, or perhaps a combination of black and yellow. * mounts horse and rides off to look for more entertaining, pathetic Expage anti-Lord of the Rings websites *

Did anyone look at the mini quiz? What was it going on about;

Does he think they are still being written?
Well at least the geustbook was well written.

For some reason I've wasted my valuable time posting the following to the guest-book there (which has a character limit that makes a text message seem long-winded):
Your site doesn't say why you hate LoTR. It could do with a spell-check too.
Whilst doing that is utterly pointless, discussing the page here is even more so. I shall therefore desist therefrom.

For those of you poor souls who went to visit this site a few months ago, the The #1 Anti-Lord of the Rings Website (http://www.expage.com/antilotrpage) has been updated.
The MIDI music is different, but still sucks. The mini quiz is different, but still sucks.
Before, there was a picture of a golden retriver on the site, but now there is a metal fork, or something. Also, before, the mini quiz read, "How many Lord of the Rings books will be written in 5 years?" (Yes, poorly researched).
Well, tell me what you think of it now.

I'm surprised at how good people are taking this. To add me to the list of many already, yes, it was quite a laugh. I agree with Teal Dude though. The site was definitly made by a child---one who has not read the books and probably won't.
He didn't really offend me much by what he said, because people have opinions. I have an entire Freshman class at my school who thinks I'm stupid for liking LOTR. I liked that he didn't have to be vulger about it though. If you read the guestbook, there were many people in there cussing LOTR fans out. At least the maker of the page wasn't mean about it. So I give him credit for that.
Before, there was a picture of a golden retriver on the site, but now there is a metal fork, or something.
Yes, the fork I did not get. Maybe he was showing his plot to stab every LOTR fan with it? Or maybe he was going to just stab Tolkien? I mean, he obviously thinks Tolkien is still alive if he asked how many books would be written in 5 years. Either way, this kid is plain weird.
But hey, maybe he was bored. For instance, I don't like the movie Cinderella which my {16 year old} sister loves. {Yes, very strange.} But say that I got insanely bored one day. I would get online and make a Cinderella-haters website. Just for fun, ya know.
Oh, and you see how he ends with "Well, we all have our opinions"? It shows some curtesy to Tolkien lovers. At least I will give him credits for not being an idiot about the whole thing. Well, other than his lack of research. Anyway, I gave my opinion. If you want to see more, you can check out the guestbook at that site. I signed it...around 3 times.
{Oh, and I'm not going to make that Cinderella-haters website if any of you were wondering. Really, I'm not.}
EDIT: Oh yeah, to add one more thing, Rynoah, nice sig. smilies/biggrin.gif

What I find very depressing is the number of poorly-spelled, exclamation-mark riddled and abusive junk signings of that site's guest book in support of Tolkien and his work. I sincerely hope that no member of this forum is responsible for this cretinous drivel, which I find more offensive than I would a balanced, reasonable argument in support of the site's founder. We've all read The Lord of the Rings at the very least, and we know the level of English that Professor Tolkien enjoyed. Do these people really think that they are doing his memory any service at all by screaming semi-articulate abuse in a language that I can scarcely recognise as my own?
Almost all of those whose signings were posted on the site (I notice that my own has mysteriously disappeared) can be summed up in the words of Mills and O'Neill's Marshal Law:
Such a carnival of empty. Such a pageant of non-entities. So many exotic variations on nothing.
I think that it is time we allowed this thread, and the memory of a web-site that is bad in every conceivable way to drop from our attention forever.

This is what I posted at the O'Reilly fourm after reading that article and some of the posts.
Its werid... because if Lord of the Rings hadn't been made into a movie, nobody would be posting here. Nobody would think LOTR fans are stupid, because LOTR would just be another book that a lot of people like.
But since its a movie, and its popular, you then make your little websites and fourms divoted to hating LOTR. So, don't tell us (LOTR fans) we need to get a life. Don't tell us that we are wasting our lifes. You are, because you spend your time making your anti-LOTR sites and anti-LOTR fourms, when you could just ignore it.
I am a LOTR fan, but I'm not trying to 'convert' you. I just want to say that if you think your accomplishing anything by belittling people for what they like, then your the ones with no lives.

The kid's site was just a kid's site. It's easy to rail against something popular: it's a way of proclaiming your individuality. His sister is probably one of the people who likes things because they are popular, so he's just reacting to that.
The O'Reilly thing was a joke, I think. Kind of like Dave Barry's article. I mean, how many of us hadn't thought that it would have been easier to send Eagles?

Basically fantasy is anything that couldn't happen in real life, right? There goes the Matrix, X-men, ET, and many other fantasy and sci fi films. *shakes head* some people. Waste on the Barrow Downs
If you're all so worried about the endless clutter of cyberspace, why so many anti-anti LOTR posts, taking up precious resources on the greatest Tolkien site ever spawned? Not that I'm not grateful for the entertaining links, it's just that there seem to be an inordinate number of posts on this topic.
It might be that I am retarded and unable to operate my browser, but I could only see one page on that 'site'. I can't believe you're getting so strung out about it! Fantasy is an acquired taste, like beer. If you don't like beer, don't go to the beer tasting and you'll be happy.
Possibly the best quote in the world. What I don't understand is why people who dislike the movies or books have to become so bitter and go to such a low level. Branding people who watch the movies "geeks" because they didn't enjoy the movie doesn't make sense, it doesn't say why they didn't enjoy the movie.
Just look at how many tickets were sold for the films and how many books have been sold over the years? Absloute millions upon millions of people worldwide. An argument based on labelling these folks "geeks" is as hollow as the head of that stupid kid who made the original website.

I was amused by the first site, exassperated with oreillynet.com, but I was truly saddened and upset by the article on 'Why I Hate Lord of the Rings.' The author was very stereo-typed and biased, and he had a very closed mind towards people who liked something different than he did. He said that fans of LotR must automatically be losers who spent there life playing Dungeons and Dragons and never once caring about the real issues in the world. I personally find that untrue about myself and everyone else I've ever met who is as enthralled by Tolkien's incredible works as I am. Generally, I find them a concious. caring, empathetic, and informed group. Sow hat if we want to escape from the real world once in a while? That doesn't mean we're freaks! And not anyone I know has ever played Dungeons and Dragons!

Well, finally we can get some answers.
The #1 Anti-Lord Of The Rings Site (http://www.expage.com/antilotrpage) has had another makeover, and, even though its still Anti-LOTR, it was defenatly a change for the best. Now the webmaster has a clearer reason for not liking LOTR. And if you look at the line right above the film-thingy, it says,"The books are ok, but the movies ____." So that kind of shows that he appreciates the books. Plus, he finally got rid of that acursed MIDI music!
But even better, he added his e-mail address. Will we finally find out what his modivations are? Will we finally find out what age he is? Will we find out if he is in fact Jack Osbourne? smilies/wink.gif

I know the two people who posted those topics; one of them likes LotR and the other doesn't care a jot and therefore would not be up to making websites against it.

Hehe, if I felt the need to put up a website on everything that I dislike, I would have no time to eat or sleep, let alone post here. smilies/biggrin.gif

*yawns*Sad,sad little people.Ignorant people. Did you guys go on to read the Two Towers thing on the '50 Reasons I Hate LOTR'? DON'T! It is so...*frowns*sad. I don't think they've even seen the movie..it's all about this $hite(please excuse my language) about how Gandalf is played by Shaq and how Gollum was actually a monkey!Herm...*cough*yeah.

"50 Reasons Lord of the Rings Sucks", now that was really funny. Either this person is joking or they are really ignorant. They seem to think that Lord Of the Rings was a movie first and that they only have sequels to cash in on the money. Also that :
The wise old wizard character was stolen from Harry Potter.
and
As bad as the Lucasfilm leaks were last year, the filmmakers of The Two Towers already have the novelization out in paperback. I've seen it at Barnes & Noble already. As if we needed any less of a reason to go see it.
Ah hilarious!
the guy who be short I saw those posts and hoped it was not someone from here, I thought people here could actually form proper sentences. I was obviously grossly mistaken.

Calm down people, '50 reasons LotR sucks' is definitely satire. This man knows his stuff, he's even got a joke in there about balrog wings.

i retract my earlier statements. jrrt showed us the joy of pity. i pity u now
you may note that i used abbreviations again smilies/smile.gif in refering to pity, i speak of course of gandalfs famous lecture to frodo after frodo says gollum should have been killed. i also refer to this (about morgoth)
for heart that is pitiless knows not the power that pity hath, of which stern anger may be formed, and a lightning kindled before which mountains fall

That was the saddest website I have ever seen. I'm going to email him/her, but I want to be sure that he/she understands it. Could someone translate this into chatspeak for me?
Hello.
Your website was recommended to me by a friend. He/she thought I would get a laugh out of it. I did. I thought that you might be interested in the opinions of others. Access this website, <http://forum.barrowdowns.com/cgi-bin/ultimatebb.cgi?ubb=get_topic&f=2&t=001765&p= (http://forum.barrowdowns.com/cgi-bin/ultimatebb.cgi?ubb=get_topic&f=2&t=001765&p=.)> Do reply to this email, I am most curious as to your reaction.
