I just want to know how many times people have read The Lord of the Rings and if they are going to read it again!

I have read it twice and I am going to start it again on Christmas Vacation!

I've read both books innumerable times. It's really crazy. I've been reading them ever since I was 6 or 7, and I read them twice a month, so you can do the calculations. That's about 216 to 240 times! smilies/biggrin.gif

Its kind of hard when your 13 taking Sohphomore classes. When the teachers asks you to do a book report with a book of HER choosing, I do it. But when I finish, she loads us with another. I don't find true peace until the summer or holidays.

yeah, it is hard to read when you have been given an assigned book, but i read Tolkien upstairs, mostly in bed and EVERYTHING else, no matter what it is downstairs. therefore i read Tolkien everyday before i go to sleep.

Whoa, Finwe! Some kind of speed-reader? Or do you not find other books interesting?

And Meela, you have a site with all things LotR, yet have not read the whole book? There must be a story there. smilies/tongue.gif

I have read LotR approximately 8-9 times, and The Hobbit approx. 5-6. In about 30 years. smilies/smile.gif

Theron, I'm a chronic insomniac, and have been since the age of 9. I regularly stay up until the wee hours reading books. And yes, I'm a speed-reader. I can go through FotR in about two days, if I'm up to my regular speed.

I have an addition to make: smilies/biggrin.gif

The Silmarillion -- About 280 times (since I'm obsessed with Elves, especially with the House of Finwë, can you tell?)

Wow Finwe! Thats crazy. Well, it's not so crazy. It took me a year to read the Silm the first time.

Theoric Windcaller, I know what you mean. It's hard to read school books and other
books at the same time. (Not that I don't!) Remember, you have Christmas break to read
all you want!

I first read the Hobbit & LotR in 1966. I couldn't tell you how many times I've read/reread it since then. The Silm I've struggled more with. I attempted it 2-3 times in the 70's when it was first published, but in the past couple of years I've managed to actually finish it 3-4 times. It really helped when I bought the Middle-Earth Atlas. I've also owned the audio cd's of Silm, Hobbit & LotR for almost a year, and they've been playing non-stop in my truck ever since. I have about an hour commute to & from work each day, and I spend it with Tolkien.

Lord of the Rings - 1 and 3/4 (I'm on the last hundred pages of ROTK)

The Silm - Own it but haven't gotten a chance to read it smilies/biggrin.gif

WOW i really havent thought of that. Gee i have been reading them since middle school, and now im in 11th grade. I have read the hobbit 28 times. And I have read the lotr trilogy about 15 times. I am currently reading it again. I love these books so much. I never get tired of reading them. God Bless you J.R.R. Tolkien

And Meela, you have a site with all things LotR, yet have not read the whole book? There must be a story there.

Not really smilies/smile.gif I tried, and I have read a lot of it, perhaps even all of it, just in small parts. On this site I was criticised and put down for not reading it all, so I tried to re-read it. Unfortunately, pushing me towards the books makes me resent them, so I have not looked at the books for some time. I will also never read the Silmarillion for the same reasons.

Apart from that, I generally prefer the background information to the story itself. I have read the Appendices many times, so I'm not entirely without knowledge.
Besides not reading the books, I am a big fan of Lotr, which is why I have my own site. Just because I haven't read every line it doesn't mean I don't like discussing it.

Silm- 2, also for reference

I guess I should read it more

I've only read The Hobbit once, would be much more if I owned it.

I've read the trilogy 4 times on my own, and just recently finished up reading it to my nephew. (We finished before the movie!) And I'm currently starting on it again, am in The Two Towers. So yeah, going on 6 times smilies/biggrin.gif

Did the Sil once, will probably do it again sometime, but LotR will always be my favorite.

Well, I first read LOTR when I was twelve. The ending broke my heart, and I couldn't bring myself to read it again until a bit after FOTR the movie came out. I am about a quarter of the way into ROTK now, but again, am having trouble making myself read it 'cause--well, 'cause of the end! smilies/frown.gif

Am only partway through the illustrated version of the Hobbit.

Um, I first read Tolkien when I was 11 (I'm 16 now)... I only read the Hobbit once, since I didn't really care for it, but I read LotR a year later, and loved it to bits. I read it eight times in that first year alone, until my 17-year-old copy fell apart and it had to be discarded at a gas station in Poland... smilies/frown.gif

After seeing RotK the other night, I've resolved to read it again, for the twelfth time.

I've read the Silmarillion 4 times, Unfinished Tales twice, I'm skimming bits of The History of Middle-Earth series here and there, and I've read Tales from the Perilous Realm a few times too. smilies/biggrin.gif

About once a year since I was in high school, so over 30 times. I'm reading it again now and Gandalf, Aragorn, Legolas and Gimli just helped Theoden kick Wormtongue out of town.

I first read LotR 31 years ago. I try to re-read it at least once a year (the first few years I read it several times) and I actually just finished reading it again a few days ago. Although I haven't kept exact count I would say:

LotR - approx. 35 times
Hobbit - approx. 10 times

I finally found a copy of Sir Gawain and the Green Knight this week. (I had been looking for it for years). Can't wait to read it!

Meela, don't listen to the criticism about not reading all of the books. Not everyone enjoys Tolkien's writing style. I know some people who couldn't get through the first book and gave up only to pick it up years later and fall in love with it.

Don't let the criticism stop you from picking up the books in the future. You may find that at another time they may give you great enjoyment.

I have always enjoyed reading your posts. Don't let a few complainers spoil your fun and enjoyment of the site. smilies/smile.gif

Sigh. Read LOTR the first time when I was twelve, and I tried to read it again. I did not pick it up again for 20 years because the first time the ending broke my heart. I saw the movie just the other day...and now I know, as I came out of the movie sobbing hysterically, I can't ever read to the end of the Return of the King. Sigh. Sorry, I'm a big sap, but I just can't do it.

Meela, don't feel bad. They are wonderful, enjoyable books with a GREAT story. Don't worry about what anyone else says. smilies/frown.gif Like I just said, I can't bring myself to ever pick up (at least, the Return of the King), again, but that's just 'cause, like I said, I'm a big emotional sap. smilies/tongue.gif Read them and ENJOY them.

Alas I have only read LotR once and the Hobbit once and I am in early goings of Silm. I do mean to read them all again and Home and UT but I cant manage multiple books at the same time so its up in the air what I read next after Silm. Also schoolwork keeps me busy if thats any excuse.

I have read The Hobbit + Lord of the Rings trilogy 8-10 times. The last time probably 10 years ago. Silmarillion I have read twice.

The Hobbit:12 times (no need for me to read it anymore, as I have it memorized)

The Silmarilian: 4 times

HoME: I am currently on my second read

I first read the Lord of the rings when I was seven, and the nazgul scared me so much that I skipped the second half of the Fellowship and went straight into Towers (which for some reason, did not scare me as much). I loved the last two books, and read them at least ten times before my tenth Birthday, when I got a special edition from my grandparents, and decided to finally read the Fellowship. In the three years proceeding that I have read LoTR all the way through about 63 times.

And somehow I've managed to convince my parents that I don't have way too much time on my hands smilies/smile.gif ...

I've read the Hobbit about 3 times, and I've listened to the audio version about 5 times. I've read Lord of the rings once, but I want to re-read it soon. But first I have to trudge through the Silmarillion, which I am reading for the first time and am stuck about a 1/4 into it. I'm also reading Unfinished Tales for the first time, which I got for Christmas.

I've read the lotr and the hobbit one each and watched the films numerous times. I'm still new to the whole tolkien world so this is just the start of a very long love affair I guess!
I've bought the sil and the unfinished tales but have not had a chance to read them yet.
I'm currently buying and reading the history of middle earth series by christopher tolkien. smilies/smile.gif

Finwe, you scare me. smilies/eek.gif smilies/biggrin.gif Teleri, you scare me too. If my parents caught me reading LOTR again I think they'd lynch me. Or ground me. They're miffed enough as it is about UT and Sil...(but I blame my dad- he introduced me to the Hobbit and LOTR. And my Uncle lent me the Silmarillion, UT, Lost Tales and HOME).
I've read the Hobbit twice I think and LOTR all the way through 5 times. I read the Hobbit and LOTR in year 6 (so I was 10-11 years old I think, and I'm 15 now), but when I went back and read the Hobbit, I found the constant naming of the orcs as goblins just irritated me, so I haven't tried again since. I've read the Appendices through twice I think. Then of course I've read bits I want to from LOTR a few times more...
I've read the Silmarillion twice (I now have my own copy smilies/smile.gif , and UT at least once (ditto). I can't remember if I got through it again. But I've read Narn i hín Húrin at least 3 times because that is just the most heartbreaking story I've ever read. I can't say I found ROTK that sad, but books rarely get much emotion from me. Narn i hín Húrin would be one of the exceptions.
