Talking with some friends i noted that they think that tolkein fans are like star trek fans. They are under the impression that we are a bunch of nerds who hide behind our computers. I am attempting to show them that this just a stereotype so please list your profession and where you are from so i can print this out and show it to my friends.

I resent that comment about Trekkies. Did you see the previews for that movie, freaks. I live in West Virginia, USA. I am a student at an institute of higher learning. And the reason I got hooked on Tolkien was that old Hobbit movie. I saw it when my older brother was doing a project on the book and was trying to understand it better.
Only one of my friends has ever read anything of Tolkiens, The Hobbit and The Lord of The Rings. He liked them and we talk about it occasionally. Of course he is hardd to talk to since we never do anything anymore(he thinks he is all high and mighty since he goes to one of those Ivy League schools)The rest of my friends either don't really read, or they just like other types of books. None of them think i am weird about it.

My name is George Lashkhi, I'm from Georgia and I'm working in a bank, as well as accomplishing my master's degree in Near East history. But, in fact, more than all ofl those activities I like reading and discussing Tolkien.

I've got one of my friends on to the Hobbit, and am starting him on LotR. He really likes it; and we talk about it sometimes.
As for those 'trekkies'; they can bugger off back where they came from and try reading some Tolkien books. All said, however, this is not really a 'legal' thread and once you've got a few listings here, Brian, I suggest you pack it in. The board, after all, does have a reputation to uphold as the most factual forum around.
(I am a student at a city college; I'm working for a degree in biological sciences; also a swimming teacher.)

As a fan of both Star Wars and Star Trek, I must take exception to some of the above comments. Don't be a snob! And don't stereotype fans of one thing the same way that others stereotype Tolkien fans! Break the chain! Watching movies and TV and reading are not mutually exclusive activities.
(BTW, we prefer to be called "Trekkers". <img src=wink.gif ALT=";)"> Hehe.)

But, we must remember that gerbils are better than parrots at breeding the bubonic plague, and I'm pretty sure that parrots don't eat smelly flowers that often.

Some interesting replies. I work (part-time) for Her Majesty`s Civil Service, the most bureaucratic, inefficient and downright incompetent organisation on earth. I fit in rather well there, actually. Before that I stayed at home raising my kids for 7 years, and before that I studied Medieval History at Glasgow University.
I think it is a bit unfair to characterise Tolkien aficionados as nerds. In my experience they come in all shapes and sizes. I play chess regularly, which undoubtedly attracts more `socially challenged` people than JRRT.
Having just read my post I realise that I probably sound like a bit of a nerd myself, so I would just like to mention that I have studied various martial arts since I was seven years old and am a human killing machine.

Livings, eh?
I'd like to totally disprove this 'nerd' misconception by saying that I am a highly accomplished olympic athlete and Hollywood movie star, but I work in a bookshop in Scotland so I can't.
Actually I'm a professional Internet detective.
Actually I edit those little Collins handbooks about superstitions and archery.
Actually I arrange major illegal export operations involving countries who have grown bored of war.
Actually I sell hard drugs to teenagers in India.
Actually I am an apprentice pick-pocket.
Actually I taste-test Wrigley's Airwaves gum for a living. Honey & Lemon is a definite go.
Actually I specialise in over-the-phone interviews with clients wishing to sell adult spacehoppers.
Actually I am working on a new grading system for electric head shavers, or 'clippers'.
Actually I fill up those plastic kiddies ball pools that you see in Ikea and places like that.
Actually I am an electronic IQ-building bus expert.
Actually I am a theatre director.
One of the above could be true; however, to reveal the true nature of one's existence in a place like this must surely be asking for it really. I like this thread, though. It encourages people to diclose information about themselves under an apparently appropriate and therefore 'secure' context, thus making it possible for the thread's original author to choose future topics of conversation or interest that bit more freely. The time for secrecy has come to pass.

Thanks for the weather forecast, GF. I`m actually enjoying the snow and have just returned from a snowball fight with a group of neds in a local park. I tried hard, but I don`t think I left any dead bodies behind. The only bad thing about the wintry weather is that I live within walking distance of work and can`t use it as an excuse for an unofficial holiday, as 90% of my colleagues seem to have done.

Well, I can't dispell that 'we're all computer nerds' myth because I'm an Engineer - Civil, like some of the previous posters. I pretty much hang out with my computer all day. But, outside of the office, I'm not terribly socially challenged. In fact, I'm a pretty cool gal, if I do say so myself! No worries about lawyers Mithadan - I'm married to a future one! Re: What do you do for a living?
I test woodchips for export to paper manufacturers.
I used to be a full-time broadcast journalist/talkhost. I only do that as a weekend hobby now. I've run for office (white man in black district...lost surprisingly well), painted photographic backdrops, done labor in a paper mill, traffic-reporting, and voiceovers for radio, tv, and infomercials. I have been a political activist (looks like I will be again shortly).
After +21 years in broadcasting, my gadfly opinions convinced the local powerbrokers that if I would not drink hemlock, I would have to be pushed off the air. In their minds, I am far worse than a nerd! Radical. Reactionary. Not me! I just hate being lied to and stolen from!
But lemons-to-lemonade! here I am, rediscovering my love of Middle-earth and of writing and of performance art. I'm limbering up http://www.barrowdowns.com/FanFichobbits00.asphere</a>.
That's what happens when your proficiencies are all over the map. Guidance counselors cannot guide, and you cannot decide! I was urged by Dad to go into something with math and computers, but I didn't, so I am saved from that branch of nerddom. I was urged by Mom to go into Preaching, but I am neither holy enough (shame on me <img src=frown.gif ALT=":("> ) or hypocritical enough (shame on them <img src=mad.gif ALT=">:"> ) for the task.
This testing job may only be good for a few years. If I do not write the great American Novel in that time, then I shall have to find other gainful employment.
Maybe I should study computers...

BTW, this is my first posting and i am excited to read what other Tolkien fans have to say. Oh yeah, since im new here, does anyone know how to include those sayings at the bottom of the posts? Welcome, Mithrandir! You can add what's called a "signature" to your posts by going to your EZBoard preferences, typing one in, and enabling the option. Go to the http://www.barrowdowns.com/cgi-bin/ultimatebb.cgimain page of the forum</a>, click on "My Control Center" near the top of the page, then click the "Edit Preferences" button. Scroll down and you'll find a textbox under the section "Custom Signature". Type one in, then check the "Use Custom Signature" checkbox.
When you're composing a post, look to the left of the textbox and you'll see a link that says "Use Emoticons". Click that and it will give you the codes on how to make them in your posts.
Whew! I feel like the Downs Help-Desk! <img src=wink.gif ALT=";)"> Hope that helps get you going. Keep posting!

Though this discussion deteriorated somewhere in the middle, it got back on track pretty well.
I got through college working in a grocery store and later in a plywood mill. Then began teaching grade school, moved on to junior high school, then with a library degree to a community college and finally became a director of a community college library. Have now been retired for 19 years during which time I ghosted some fantasy novels. Now write the occasional short story and commit poetry, a heinous act, I know.

Re: OT: A Living
Sorry it's been a while. I moved, and switched from AOL to compuserve.
Right now I'm living in sunny California (good thing it's sunny now, cause the electricity could go off at any time. My bill has already gone off the charts!)...and I'm a delivery driver for DR. PEPPER. We also deliver snapple. This is just temporary until my wife finishes her masters in Business/Administration in October. Then, by the grace of God, I will be able to complete my degree in Theology (I'm half way finished). Before this I was a Bible teacher in Tokyo, Japan for 2 years, and held my own month-long Bible Prophecy seminars (with crowds ranging from 100-300)
all throughout the U.S.
The Bible is my first and true love, and then Tolkien and CS Lewis are my favorite non-Biblical authors. I try to make it a point not to "preach" my beliefs on this site. I think that would be both wrong (for this is not a religious site, but one dedicated to Tolkiens works. there are othere sites for that, and I share my thoughts in there.), and also disrespectful (For I'm sure there are many people on this site from other religious persuasions).

Off topic here, but Lindil has started a Tolkien/Christian discussion forum. I was thinking of doing so myself, but since he's already got a start on one...
...also, I've thought of writing a Lord of the Rings Bible Study (perhaps with a better name!). Ever since I first brought up the topic in the chats, I've been seeing more and more Christian Tolkien afficianados!
Does a book of that sort sound interesting? Email me: robertwgardner@hotmail.com, or leave a note on Lindil's board http://beta.ezboard.com/bosanwekentabeta.ezboard.com/bosanwekenta</a>
P.S. Getting back on topic, I'd like to be a writer when I grow up!

Re: OT: A Living
OFF Topic: KayQy, It sounds like your'e a Christian as well. Awesome. I'm sure there are a few more. I'd love to chat in a Christian Tolkien lovers forum like Gilthalion suggested. Let's get it going. I made my comment about not preaching on this site because, I don't think it's very tactful, nor Christlike to come on to someone's site and start trying to prosyletize/evangelize. Some believers might think that is a very "noble" and "zealous" thing to do. I don't. I think it would turn people off (Esp. RKittle, who probably did not intend this site for that purpose). But now, if there are some other belivers on this site that Love the Lord, and want to chat about the Bible and Tolkien, and RKittle gives us the go ahead, that's a whole different ball game. Then people who know us, and are interested in in hearing and sharing what we have to chat about, can come on in and join us. We need to have a special place to do it though.
There is definitely a lot of Tolkien's theology that spills over into LotR, even though LotR is not intended to be an allegory. It was exciting for me to learn that Tolkien is the one who led CS Lewis to faith in Christ. Anyhow, If you are going to start that special chat room Gilthalion, please count me in.

I heard it on the Bible answer man broadcast (Hank Hannegraff of the Christian Research Institute) on a special they were having in which they compared Harry Potter with LotR, and The Chronicles of Narnia. You can look up equip.org (The Bible Answer Man's site) and ask for the exact reference. I haven't got around to doing it yet, but I've heard it from other credible sources too.

I'm I HS student with no job (hey, I need time to sit in front of the computer and be nerdy) I'm thinking of either going into a Computer Science field or something to do with literature. Well, I'm sure not going to help with the proof against JRRT fans being nerds, 'cause I'm probably one of the biggest nerds of all time (and proud of it) Most people think that I'm a bit fanatical about things like Tolkien and Star Wars, but they're wrong, i'm very fanatical about that kind of thing. <img src=smile.gif ALT=":)"> (example: I'm learning quenya even through my friends' "Why learn a 'fake' language?") <img src=smile.gif ALT=":)">

Being good enough, or Christian enough has nothing to do with getting into heaven. It's like adoption, or fire insurance. You are family, or not.. you've got fire insurance or not. You've clearly chosen.....not. And that settles it.

If you own a bank (for instance), and want a dedicated t1 long distance communication line between your main database and an ATM, you would order that line from a long distance carrier, that long distance carrier would order the local portion of that line from the local exchange carrier. if your t1 goes down and the long distance carrier determines the problem to be in the local exchange portion, a trouble ticket is generated by that local exchange carrier and worked. I'm the guy that double checks those tickets when they are closed out. Does it get much better than that?

More than often I simply get money from people who don't expect me to pay them back.
However, when that fails, I'll write a story or two to send in to some obscure Sci-fi magazine. Or design some web-page for a company or person. Boring work, but it gives me a lot of flexibility.
Oh, that and I go to school.

I'm attending the 12th class in a German school. In my spare time I read a lot, meet my girlfriend, go out with friends, work on my LOTR-Webpage and so on. Ah, I forgot music. Sometimes I play the piano, since I've been learning it for 12 years.
Since my friends aren't much concerned with my Tolkien-"mania", I haven't ever been called a nerd. *g*
