If you had to go on a journey through ME, but you could only take with you 5 items, what would they be and why?

Let's see...

Rope: never can have too much rope.

Lembas: food gets expensive when you travel.

Elven cloak: It's a tent, it's a blanky, it's a towel, and it goes well with everything, dressy or casual.

Sindarian-Westron dictionary: "OK, 'sit down'...how do you say "sit down'? Oh, here it is...'Take a bath!'

What else? Oh, yeah...Ring of Power.

All packed. Let's go!

Boy, I've been waiting for someone to ask this one! I'd bring...

20 lbs of chocolate

2 lbs of coffee

a 357 magnum (I'm a small elf and really need a powerful weapon)

My toothbrush & toothpaste

And a pair of those little walkie-talkie radios.

Anything else I need I can get when I reach Middle Earth. Where are we all meeting? Rivendel?

Raefindel
03-09-2002, 09:22 PM
Are you sure I can bring only 5 things? I really need to bring tylenol and super-glue but I'd hate to leave the coffee and chocolate to include them.

Last summer I went camping and Super-glue saved my life!

1. A Bible (oh, that's right, this is pre-Bible)

Okay then,
1. Rope
2. Sword
3. Water bottle
4. Knife
5. Change of Clothes

Kalimac

Firladion, can we bring anachronistic stuff? I'm assuming we can from previous posts but want to make sure (also, if we can, Joy would be able to bring her Bible smilies/smile.gif).

I used to think a good bit about this question when I was younger, only in those days I wanted to time-travel back to the middle ages (not that ME is really so different). Here they are:

A bottle of antibiotics

A gun, along with quite a few clips. Sorry about this one, but if you're going to a world like that it's definitely one of those don't-leave-home-without-it items. Wouldn't do much against Nazgul or Wizards, but a few shots in the air would work wonders for fending off Sharkey's men and (if NOT shooting in the air) possibly even Orcs.

A toothbrush.

A Westron-English/English-Westron dictionary, if obtainable. If not, a Sindarin-English dictionary.

Some gold coins or precious stones; once I got there I could sell them for a sackful of silver pennies and buy rope, appropriate clothes, food and so forth.

Hmmm, a map of ME could be extremely useful too, not sure which item I'd jettison in order to bring it though. With any luck my dictionary would have a basic map in it. Maybe "Fodor's Five-Star Guide to Middle-Earth" would be a better choice because of the maps, although the "useful phrases" section would probably be even worse than guidebook phrase sections usually are. (Two pages of phrases for ordering different varieties of beer in the Four Farthings, no phrases for "Please excuse me, Your Majesty The Witch-King, but I think you have me confused with someone else.")

-A sword, I'd probably definitly need a sword.
-Rope, cause it really worked out for Sam.
-Food, I can't depend on running into friends along the road to give me food all the time.
-An Elvish dictionary, they really seem to like it when you can speak their language (I want to be an 'elf-friend')
-Last, but not least, A horse! I'd get really tired walking everywhere.

Oh lord, I can't make puns at this time of the morning smilies/frown.gif . How about SureFire Espresso? Maybe we could have a sideline of tea as well, though (I love the smell of coffee but can't stand drinking it. Don't ask me why). The tea stand could be called the Second Round - or actually maybe that would be a better name if we were selling alcohol. Sound good? smilies/biggrin.gif

Raefindel
03-10-2002, 12:55 AM
Tea's great too, and we wouldn't have to bring it with us. Do you figure we could get coffee anywhere in ME?

Kalimac
03-10-2002, 01:04 AM
Mmm...don't know. This is starting to sound like that thread with the debate over whether hobbits could get rice for rice pudding or not smilies/smile.gif. If hobbits can get tea, hypothetically they could probably get coffee since they're both grown in very warm climates, and New World/Old World stuff wouldn't really apply since hobbits have already been shown to have access to plants from both (taters, anyone?). Maybe the Southrons export it? So on the balance I'd yes, they have could it in ME but I'd still bring along a few bags just in case. In other words, I'll sit firmly on the fence smilies/smile.gif.

Raefindel
03-10-2002, 01:22 AM
OK, If we can get coffee and tea we must be able to get chocolate too! Great! now I don't have to bring it with me. Let me revise my list...

Ductape and superglue for sure, you can build a house with ductape and superglue. smilies/biggrin.gif My red trippy sunglasses (don't ask). Toilet paper (self explainitory). And my LotR books, you always have time to read on an adventure. smilies/cool.gif

And if we can't bring any modern stuff.
1. A mace (not the spray, like the one Sauron had in the movie) smilies/smile.gif I like smashing and crushing weapons.

2. Handkerchiefs (spelling?) If Bilbo needed them, I would too. smilies/biggrin.gif

3. My bow and arrows.

4. Extra clothes. Never know when I might get dirty. smilies/wink.gif

TOILET PAPER! You wusses! Haven't you ever heard of the plant Lamb's Tongue? (Or as we called it when we were kids, "Indian toilet paper".)

Oh Yeah? Lamb's tongue? Someone's gonna have to point it out for me! I reccognize poison Ivy and Poison oak when I see it. If I had to make a serious list of what to bring from my life now to ME I would bring...

A really good first aid kit with Ibuprofen and a good medical book.

My toothbrush and toothpaste
.
I can't live without my sweats, I just get too cold. (Don't ask me why I live in Seattle)

a flashlight.

and my little hiking stove.

As for a Weapon I guess when I get there I'll have to ask Legolas to give me archery lessons, OH WHAT A SHAME! smilies/evil.gif

Let's see...
1. Lembas (always a good thing)
2. Weapon of somesort..you know, in case any Orcs are lurking around.
3. I'm gonna have to agree with everyone about the whole coffee thing...coffee would be good.
4. Definately something that I can barter with to get maybe some more food.
5. Sindarian-English dictionary smilies/biggrin.gif
So when are we leaving? smilies/wink.gif

I think I would have to bring 1) a map of Middle Earth, 2)Rope, 3)lembas, 4)elven cloak, and 5)a weapon like a bow and arrow.
Those are the essentials in my opinion. If I had enough lembas, I could last until I found someone who would give me some food. If I could bring one more thing, it would definately be duct tape, duct tape will fix anything!

I would take:

My bow and all my arrows, plus quiver, bracer and tab.

Stuff to barter with for food, clothing, more arrows, rope, etc.

A map

All the necessary dictionaries.

A hairbrush - hey! how else did all the elves keep they're hair so tangle free?!
No really my story - with so much going on around me I would have to write it down somewhere, and it would be something to do.

Or maybe matches, you never know when you'll need them!

Luntindomeiel
03-10-2002, 01:27 PM
I think it'd be...

1)A Map
2)A lamp
3)A sword
4)Food
5)The Ring

Kalimac
03-10-2002, 03:34 PM
Matches, those are good - can't believe I forgot those the first time. Or better yet a cigarette lighter. (Nothing like scrape, scrape, scraping a match and then having it fizzle out before you can light anything).

Toilet paper...always good stuff to have along, especially in countries where the bathroom consists of a hole in the ground, and much easier on the skin than plant-leaves to the unaccustomed. Unfortunately it doesn't sound like the many wonderful features of Hobbition included indoor plumbing.

Joy
03-10-2002, 03:59 PM
Matches! Have you guys ever made a fire with flint stones or by rubbing sticks together?? That's the way a real ranger would do it. Though I would hope somebody on the journey would think of it smilies/smile.gif

Kalimac
03-10-2002, 04:07 PM
Actually I have started a fire by rubbing sticks together, and it's no fun - you wear your arms out and if you slow down even for a second you have to start all over again. It can take you an hour to get one started, and if I'm hungry (or see Nazgul behind me) I'd rather not wait that long. Haven't tried flint stones, though. Granted, Aragorn can probably get fire started with one piece of damp wood and no help of any kind in ten seconds flat, but I can't count on always having him with me, nice as that would be smilies/smile.gif. No, matches or lighter for me.

BTW one thing I've always wondered about; in The Hobbit and LOTR, they use tinder-boxes to start fires. What is a tinder-box exactly? (I hide my head in shame at my ignorance, but I really don't know). Is it just a box with flint in it or is there something else to it?

[ March 10, 2002: Message edited by: Kalimac ]

Firladion Greenbow
03-10-2002, 06:50 PM
Fyi Kalimac a tinder box is just that, a box with tinder in it (stuff to make a fire) added to it are a steel (small metal thing) and a flint...Et voila, fire.

I meant to add earlier, that all the stuff you bring, you have to carry yourself....
So whoever said "a horse", NO (unless of course you are very strong!)
Also you are fully clothed in whatever takes your fancy, weather permitting.

I will allow you to take one extra thing, but it has to be a book (and yes, Bibles are allowed)

Being a Ranger myself this could work out very embarrassing if I do not choose well.
So this is my 5 and book.

1)Good Sword (guns are no good if you run out of ammunition, even if they do appear useful against a Balrog.
2)Small knife (poss swiss army style, good for all the little jobs)
3)Tinder box (matches suck when they get wet, and you can run out of them)
4)First aid kit (there may be no plants available)
5)Mess tin (army type eating/cooking/drinking vessel) These are invaluable

Book)Tom Brown book of survival (i forget things as i get older)

I think that covers everything......just.

Meet you all soon.

1. A lightweight carrige that I can put together and carry if I need to. ^_^
2. A portable solarpowerstation. or maybe a bikegenerator?
3. My computer
4. My CD-player (need to listen to the LotR-soundtrack five times a day..)
5. a bag of candy..

the book: I would have to say that even though I would like to have the Sil, LotR, Hobbit or any similar book with me, I would still have the bible with me.. ^_^

I'd have to get my sister to come along, as she's a huge Tolkein fan too and would kill me if i didn't bring her along (if she has to count as one of my items, then yes i could carry her as she's so skinny. she frequent the downs too, so she'll probably be along complaining in a minute!) also, she can always make me laugh, which would probably be useful. I've then got two lists of things to take, the sensible one and the silly one. I'll do the silly one first:

1. Solar powerered jet pack to help me get around nad escape form any danger without needing weapons!

2. A flattering dress so that when i met a nice elf, i could look stunning!

3. A hair brush for the same reason as the dress.

4. Make-up for the same reason as the dress and the hair brush.

5. A babbelfish so i could talk to everyone easily (for those of you who haven't heard "the Hitchhicker's Guide to the Galaxy" you put it in your ear and it immediately translates everything you hear into the correct language for you!)

the sensible list is just the same as everyone else's; weapons, food, dry socks and shoes cos i can't stand having wet feet, pen and paper to write down everything that happened and a good first aid kit, with explanations of what to do when someone got shot by an arrow and in other likely situations.

As for the book, have all of Tolkein's books ever all been printed in one. It would be heavy to carry round, but worth it!

But I figure one might manage with just one item: a towel.

If it works in Hitch-Hiker's Guide, why not in Middle-earth?

Of course, Nevtalathiel's suggestion of a Babel Fish would save me learning any of the languages, but when everyone uses it, it causes more and bloodier wars than anything else in the universe. Leave it at home.

Hmmmmm, lets see, I think I would take The Middle Earth companion - it describes every thing to do with Middle Earth in short, easy to read entries, rather like a dictionary or encyclopedia, and similar to the DiscWorld Companion by Terry Prattchet - such a cool book! smilies/biggrin.gif

heheh, that's a tough question actually - and i love what you have come up with so far (though i havent read through them all)

Well, as it happens, I have a wee bag made up for such a journey, which contains food (and lembas), water skins, spare clothes (just a couple of bits), an ME first-aid kit and a blanket. And that's only one item - yay! Another four. right. A weapon, a map, a ranger (failing that, a good friend) and...hmm. cooking utensils might be handy. But if my companion has some stuff, maybe I could take my diary instead. smilies/biggrin.gif

By the way, I thought we could all meet up in Bree (its at the crossroads between the Andrath Greenway and the East-West road, you cannot miss it), there is a nice little inn there called The Prancing Pony (some of you may have heard of it)
We will have some lunch, a few beers, a good nights rest and set of just after breakfast.

book: The largest, most in-depth guide to Middle Earth I can find
1) a sword and shield
2) shoes (A hobbit probobly would forget to bring shoes leaving home)
3) a pillow
4) a first aid kit that contains chap stick and toilet paper smilies/biggrin.gif

Awww: a pillow? lol. jk: that is important, I am just able to sleep on the ground quite easily, personally.

And toilet paper: yeah, handy I guess...you could always use a leaf...just make sure it wasn't poison ivy.

Firladion Greenbow
03-28-2002, 09:10 PM
Then again, you could always use your backpack as a pillow! (two jobs in one)

As for toilet paper, good idea, I have personally had the misfortune of needing the toilet in the middle of a forest, all well and good you say, until I mention it was a pine forest (distinct lack of soft leaves) bit rough on the old posterior!!!

Walking around looking like a hedgehog/ porcupine was not my idea of fun....

I like this Firladion Greenbow. smilies/tongue.gif What I would take to ME:

a survival guide to ME
bartering supplies(money, jewels, etc.)
clothes
food (and plenty of it!)
a journal to write everything down in

for my book I would have to pick the LOTR trilogy if it were all in one so I wouldn't have to keep track of three books.

Oh and can I bring a few other people with me? like Legolas, Strider, Frodo, Merry, Pippin, Gandalf(you need a wizard for some things you know...)and all the rest that I don't want to type out. hehehe
smilies/biggrin.gif Can't wait...

You could use your bag as a pillow, but it might be a bit lumpy if it was full of horses and elves!!!

Taking a wizard sounds like a really good idea, and if you took a towel, you COULD use it instead of toilet paper if you were stuck in a pine forest!!!

Amanruthiel
04-03-2002, 10:08 AM
5 items plus a book eh!

1. Deoderant - don't want to be wiffy when you meet any handsome male elves;
2. Long dark wool cloak - can also be a towel-blanket etc;
3. First aid kit containing lots of painkillers;
4. Fly spray - kills nasty insecty things and also can be used to spray in eyes;
5. Large flask of wine - hey who cares whats happening just have a drink.

Book - telephone directory - scrunch up sheets to putinside backpack for pillow, use as toilet paper when in pine forests, make paper aeroplane to send for help and wrap gifts when it is a friendly hobbit's birthday!

Fair Amaryllis
04-03-2002, 03:54 PM
WEll, you'd think it'd have to smell nasty to repel the insects, smell sweet to repel the orcs, and have no smell at all for the deoderant. thats a dilema. But hey, I think there might be a 3 in one thing available there. Three different nozzles. the red one to get rid of insects, the black one to get rid of orcs, and the white one for deoderant. it may be kind of expensive though. Those orcs take a lot of spraying toget rid of you know... smilies/cool.gif

I don't know of a deodorant that can be used as an Orc/fly spray, but my wife uses something in the morning that nearly chokes the life out of me (it does smell nice, eventually, once the smog clears!!) smilies/biggrin.gif

It may have the same effect on Orcs and Flies, but she won't let me try. smilies/frown.gif

Funny you should mention your wife. It got me wondering when you told about yourself on the riddle thread what kind of woman it would take to put up with a "Robin hood Actor" and Tolkien-attic like yourself.

Does she encourage your "oddity" or tolerate it?

My husband encourages my middle-earth tendancies. Strange though it may seem, for someone who stays as distant from it as he does. It takes a special spouce, doesn't it? smilies/smile.gif

This is very true.

My other half tolerates half of what I do and hates the other half.
Her mind being of a very scientific nature, she has little room for my oddities and ("off with the fairies" as she puts it) life.

We do balance each other out for the most part though.

By the way, what do you mean "Robin Hood actor", actor!!!!!, actor!!!!! smilies/mad.gif

That's right, You Are Robin Hood! I meant no offense! I'm curious which part she hates? Or is it my business.

My hubby and I took the kids to a movie last night and he said

"Why don't you go in and see the TTT Trailer, The Lord of the Rings is just about over."

So I did and came back to watch Ice age with him and the kids and in 20 minutes he said

"Why don't you go in and see Fellowship, it's just starting"

So I did. When his movie was over I saw him come in to get me so I began to leave and he said

"You can stay here, I'll take the kids home and come back and get you later" I Said

"but this isn't over till 11 o'clock!"

He made a special trip back to get me at 11 o'clock at night!

He's so special!

Lembas is the bread that Galadriel gave to the Fellowship when leaving Lothlorien. It is sweet and very nutricious(sp?), and came wraped in Mallorn leaves, from the trees that grow only in Lothlorien. The recepie is a secret known only to Galadriel and her maids. We often discuss how we can get the recepie out of her, or post our own version. smilies/wink.gif

Hmmmmmm. . . I would bring:
a big insulated bag full of food (I don't think I can find any lembas at the grocery store) change of clothes, including a couple hats and bandanas to keep me safe from too much heat. I'd probably steal my brother's Swiss army knife (hey, I'm sure he has another, and I can't fight off orcs, since I wouldn't be able to hold a sword, let alone weild one, and it's best that I stay far from bows and arrows; I'd do more harm than good) A Middle-Earth guide (complete with Westron-English/English-Westron dictionary) Before I leave, I would go to Barnes & Noble and buy a survival book. Oh no! I don't have any room for my bug repelent or First Aid kit!
