People are always curious about this, and some people get upset by the question, but I think its fair to know who you're dealing with. So, i'll answer.

Mmmmm, seem to be in a mid-range age all on my own at the moment:

Male 26

Elven Maiden, I can imagine why you'd want to ask this question, but personally I don't think it matters too much. That's the good thing about these kinds of places: you can relate to others using the things you have in common (i.e. Tolkien here) without having to get over the usual barriers that might stop you meeting these people in the real world... I think the mix of ages you get on this board is a good thing: adds perspective!

Besides, it says something for the maturity of this place that it is difficult to guess most people's ages - a couple of times I've been surprised by people I assumed were adults turning out to be youngsters. I think that's a good thing.

How about you? What's your take on this subject? Will you still be talking to us now that half of us are twice your age? smilies/wink.gif

Male, 25, and new to Tolkien.

I just started reading this summer because I knew the movies were coming out, and I know how much better books usually are than movies. Also, many of my favorite books are written in a Tolkien style, so I figured I should read the guy who started it all.

Hmm... lots of girls around the age I like too... Anyone from NC or Ca?

Estelyn Telcontar
02-11-2002, 07:21 AM
Well, Glen, if you really want to remain mysterious, watch out what you post on other threads! If you were about 18 when Bakshi's movie came out, it doesn't take higher mathematic proficiency to put your age at approximately - well, a number which is very important in Adams' Hitchhiker's Guide!
That just strengthens my resolve to post absolutely nothing on this site that gives anyone a clue to my age!! smilies/tongue.gif

Goodness, where do I start.....
31,female.
Saw the cartoon "The Hobbit" at about 6.
At about 12, had the book "The Two Towers" left in my lap when the bell rang and the friend who'd gotten it in the school library took off, so I read it...then I figured I'd better begin at the beginning...
Said friend said that she and a freind in her "old neighborhood" had taken on roles of the characters, my friend was Merry, her old friend Pippin. After little thought, I became Sam. smilies/smile.gif He was near and dear to my heart then and he still is. smilies/smile.gif
A moment that makes me chuckle: My friend "Merry" once said: "I've got to go over to the cafeteria." and headed off. Not being told not to, I followed. She turned to me and said, "Hm. Maybe I ought to be Frodo, too, 'cause you seem to keep wanting to follow me around! "
There. Secret shared.
"I made a promise, Mister Frodo! 'Don't you leave him, Samwise Gamgee,' Gandalf said;
'Don't you leave him! "

And when I start writing, I can't stop if someone doesn't tell me to.. So now I'm telling myself to stop.. ^_^

i sure am envious at most of you who had the opportunity to experience tolkien years and years ago. Female, 23. Saw Bakshi's versions when I was a kid. Was traumatized, what with those blood red skies and Orc heads with white-studded eyes! didn't understand a thing! Started reading october of last year. completely hooked. finished them all. I need Unfinished Tales nad 10 of the 12 'history' books. Regretting for not having started so much sooner. Fearful that most of you wud be Tolkien snobs who would be looking down on creatures like me. For you are the enlightened ones, and the path is not too clear. Give me hope .

Hi, Im a female and Im 16 (I'll be 17 in like a month... can't wait!!)
Ummm.. anyway, I really didn't discover Tolkines work untill I was like maybe 6, 7 years old(?), which is when I saw the cartoon version of The Hobbit(note: I didn't really know that I was watching somthing so famouse at the time), but I really really didn't get into Tolkien untill the movie came out, and after that I read the books. But yeah, before all that, I heard bits and peices of Tolkien, but didn't really get it into my head what they were.

Goodness, no! I read them years ago, but remember very little, particularly detail-wise. Even after I am able to get ahold of another set of books and read them, I KNOW I won't remember it all!!

Welcome, Carlithiel. Having first read Tolkien around 1972 was not such a great blessing. He dies two years later leaving only The Hobbit, LoTR, Tom Bombadil and The Road Goes Ever On published. These books, and one of his biographies name other "works" in Middle Earth history such as The Fall of Gondolin, etc. I recall going to a bookstore and asking about then only to find they had never been published. So that was all we had until 1977 when The Silmarillion was published and 1980 when Unfinished Tales came out. The Sil. and UT gave new hope, but Lost Tales was, initially, a great disappointment and I didn't resume buying HoME until about 5 years ago. People today have a lot more to look forward to than we "old timers" did.

Welcome! I’m relatively new here as well. Only a handful of posts but I’ve been lurking for weeks learning the lay of the land. From everything I’ve seen everyone is very friendly and helpful here. The Admin’s are very knowledgeable and helpful. The only time that I’ve seen what I would term questionable conduct, was from a newbie that seemed to have surfed in and just wanted to stir up some trouble.

Male 45!!! I guess that qualifies me as the oldest and smelliest one here! (Puffs out chest & struts around the room) I first read Tolkien in 1972; long before some of you whippersnappers were even born. Why, back in MY day we didn’t even have books. We had to read Tolkien on stone tablets! Hey! Anybody seen my teeth? I need a nap.

Male, 16.

I was suprised to see this many females. I know saying that was sexist, but my hobbies are usually considered to be nonsense to most females. That is why I am use to all males all the time. It is nice to see women around here though, dont get me wrong. I do not discriminate.

I first starting reading Tolkien when I was 12. I think I wont be done with all of the books until college. So I hope the Barrow Downs stays up for years to come because I cannot think of being on any other Tolkien Forum.

Well, I am a female, age 21 (almost 22). I am a hobbit here, but in real life (due to my taller than most women height) I'd be an Elf. I discover Tolkien when I was 21 - wait, let's try 2 months ago! Am I the only kid that didn't see The Hobbit cartoon when I was young - I was brought up on The Last Unicorn, though. I feel as though I missed something. Nevertheless I have found Tolkien & I am obsessed.
Relating to the girls & Tolkien thing - well, I think that most girls do think it's weird, I only have one friend that is as crazy as I am (plus, I like comics, so that's two weird points for me). But all of us chicks here are special in that we can find something more interesting than N Sync folders & fuzzy pink pens!
Also, Samwise - relating to your childhood story - I have a very funny childhood movie of myself (& others) on the hood of a car saying "I'm the Last Unicorn, did you know that?" We were a bunch of fun crazy kids too.
OK, that was way longer than I expected it to be. I'll stop torturing ya'll now with my life!

So I came into ME after seeing the movie, and have since read The Hobbit, LOTR and have just started The Silmarillion.
Most of my girl friends seem to think my obsession is very strange since to them LOTR is a 'guy' movie, so it's nice to see so many other females enjoying Tolkien's books smilies/biggrin.gif

Hello to all the new ones! Just wanted to add that I too LOVE The Last Unicorn, I hear they are re-making it as a live action flick and Christopher Lee is going to reprise his role as the evil king (he did the voice in the cartoon, and is now supposed to play the part in the movie). Also, the Murder She Wrote lady (why can't I remember her name right now!?!) was the original voice of Mommy Fortuna, and she's supposed to play that part too.

I had seen the cartoon many years ago, but just found out it was originally a book, need to get that on my reading list!

No one is "too old" for TLU, the cartoon came out in the late 70's or early 80's I think. I was just a kid then, but my mom watched it with me and she cried. Now it's part of my personal VHS (must upgrade to DVD sometime) collection along with The Hobbit. Both of which I made my husband watch - don't think he was too excited about that! smilies/smile.gif

(By the way, please forgive me for the off-Tolkien post!)

I have definately mentioned my age somewhere else on this forum, but i am male, 30 years old and first read The Hobbit when i was 13, could not put it down and ended up reading it all in one day, next came LOTR, did not have a clue what is was all about, put it down and eventually picked it back up a year later.
And at the ripe old age of 14 i started to understand it (sort of)
Upon hearing they were making the film it sparked off my interest again, so read the entire lot again.
somehow it seemed an entirely different story to how i remembered it (must be my age)
Now i am hooked.

again.

I'm female, and turning 21 this June. The problem with having your birthday in the middle of the year is that you don't really know how old you are.
Discovered Tolkien last November; I feel frustrated because the only thing closest to a extensive comprehension of Tolikien is the movie. I feel odd not watching a movie without reading the book. Oh well...
I appreciate it that there are people who have bible verses as their signature. I find it really nice. smilies/rolleyes.gif

plus, I like comics, so that's two weird points for me).

Wierd? Nooooo...hey, in high school, I had a group of friends who were totally into the comic-X-Men-mutant kind of thing. (One extreme to the other). We made our own superhero team (the leader of which was the LOTR expert friend I've mentioned in other posts), and to this DAY he and I refer to one another by either our codenames (him, Grizzly, mine, Topaz) or the nicknames we made up to go with them!! (Griz, Fuzz, Furball, Bearskin Rug/Topz, Glowworm....)Heh--I slipped into that realm while posting here--mentioned something about "metamorphing" in the "Which way would you go?" thread..... smilies/smile.gif

Also, Samwise - relating to your childhood story - I have a very funny childhood movie of myself (& others) on the hood of a car saying "I'm the Last Unicorn, did you know that?" We were a bunch of fun crazy kids too.

Wow! Someone read that! Thought it was too long..... smilies/smile.gif
"Mr. Frodo, sir!" cried Sam, quaking. "Don't let him hurt me, sir! Don't let him turn me into anything unnatural! My old dad would take on so. I meant no harm, on my honour, sir! "

I'm not a teenager, but (and everyone has their own taste), I don't find Orlando Bloom attractive. I think Elijah Wood's a really good looking young man, but---he's a BOY. Sean Astin grew up VERY well from his GOONIE days, but he's married and not a Christian....sigh....

22-year-old girl (woman? I still feel weird saying that). I haven't really thought about what I would be in Middle-Earth but if you're going by physical features I'd probably be a random woman of Rohan (exciting, eh?). Realized that I'm really no longer a teenager by not even having even the faintest crush on Orlando Bloom, though he is very nice-looking. (Of course it helps to be engaged to a fellow Tolkienphile who is definitely an Elf smilies/smile.gif).

I first read "The Hobbit" at 6 and LOTR at 10, albeit when I got to TTT I was so frantic to find out what was happening to Sam and Frodo that I skipped everything after Merry and Pippin's escape and just went straight to Book IV. (Went back and finished Book III afterwards). And that's all there is to say about that.

You're actually not the only female dwarf, Lady Bain. I may not have given myself a Tolkeinesque nick, but that doesn't mean I'm not of Middle Earth...I reviwed my options and decided I most closely resembled the dwarves. I even have a name, which I can't change to (and wouldn't, now, because people here know me as Susan)

Anyway, I'm female, age 22. My family read The Hobbit aloud when I was 7 or 8. I tried reading LOTR when I was about 10, but didn't get into it, although I tried several times over the course of several years. Then I stopped for a while and only took it up again when the movie was about to come out, and you know what? It's really good *chuckle*

Hey, Lady Bain, we also both became members on the same day smilies/smile.gif

Welcome to the downs. I'm pretty new myself, but I'm a long-time reader of Tolkien. I'm glad someone pulled up this thread again. It's fun to read about everyone.

I am the definite grandmother of this thread (maybe of the entire barrow-downs??) I'm just a year or so older than when Frodo set out for Elvenhome (figure that one out!) I first read The Hobbit and Lord of the Rings in the mid 60s (that's right--it's not a misprint). I still have a bunch of editions from that time--the Ballentine paperbacks, a Hobbit from the 50s, and the 2nd ed. of LOTR. We were part of the "Frodo Lives" generation in college. We had Tolkien posters on our college dorm room walls, Gandalf for President buttons, and ran around with long hair and long skirts looking like we stepped out of Middle-earth. We made homemade bread and loved trees and the earth. After all these years and many rereadings, I still love the books today.

Glad to see lots of women who're into Tolkien, like many before me on this thread I found I was alone in my taste for swords and stuff.
As this is a site for secrets I'm 30 and please don't beat me up teenage girls but I know Orlando Bloom's second cousin. (She's never met him but knows his Mum (her cousin) very well. At the risk of being beaten up by women my own age I've met Sean Bean too.
As for comics I always loved 'The Crow' ones but they can be difficult to get hold of in the UK.
I first got into 'the Hobbit' when I was 12 and worked my way from there due to the fact I had problems making friends because I lived somewhere remote. I have given away too many secrets haven't I? Before I get mobbed for Orli's address I don't know it and I'm not asking for it. That just wouldn't be the behaviour of a Barrowdowner now would it? I'm now going to get hate postings aren't I. Perhaps I should have kept my secrets to myself.

Heh, I wouldn't beat you up, Auriel, particularly over something like that.
Somewhere on the 'Downs there's a post about my finding out that when he was a (well, more of a boy than he is, now), Elijah Wood lived across the street from a friend of my mother's here in my hometown. There's only one person here who knows my address, and she's married. smilies/wink.gif
Suddenly a low voice murmured:
"Gil-Galad was an elven-king.
Of him the harpers sadly sing:
the last whose realm was fair and free
between the Mountains and the Sea.

His sword was long, his lance was keen,
his shining helm afar was seen;
the countless stars of Heaven's feild
were mirrored in his silver shield..

But long ago he rode away
and where he dwelleth none can say
for into darkness fell his star
in Mordor where the shadows are. "

The others turned in amazement, for the voice was Sam's.

I am female and 41. But I agree with the one who said that age is not important here though we are always curious about it. I must say that I was happy to find others around my age. And, yes, Tolkien is what we have in commom, first of all. I am sorry I was introduced to his wonderful world only this year. On the other hand I think there is the right time for everything. Now I know Middle-earth. That's what matters mailto:dalmata92@hotmail.comdalmata92@hotmail.com</A>

Welcome, Angoriel, Mae Govannen(Well met).
Glad you discovered Tolkien. No one is to old to enjoy it. Are you a mother? There aren't very many of us on the site, but everyone treats us like queens.

Don't be afraid to ask questions. Anyone who knows the answer will likely enjoy the chance to show off his extensive knowledge

Just human aged 34 (will be 35 next Monday) So "Happy Birthday" song is welcome smilies/biggrin.gif
I first got hold of the "Lord of the Rings" in 1985 (how old was I then?)I loved it at once because it was so different from what I had read before - entire new world, mysterious peoples(?)and lands, noble characters, heroic quest, love and sacrifice. None of my friends somehow are really keen on the book, though many have read it. When I'm asked now what I have found in it, I really can't put it in words. It's all on the level of emotions (do I sound like a grown-up?) I just love it !!!

Female, 38. Discovered Tolkien thanks to Ranking and Bass's The Hobbit cartoon. Began reading soon after. Was given LOTR at 11, ignored them till 13-16 yrs, adored them! Took specialty English course, FOTR, got an A in high school. Met fellah who liked to read them aloud, was hooked completely. Read Sil on my own, Unfinished tales at the library - brought tissues, people thought I was nuts...
Continuing to read...all .... gosh, it gets harder as you delve deeper! I love it though.

Hullo everyone !

I am about as old as child of the 7th age, so she`s not the only "grandmother" on the downs!
The difference is, I only discovered Tolkien last year, with 5O ! I now wonder why on earth I hadn`t heard about him before, (I read a lot of English books and I stayed in England in the USA in the seventies, but none of my friends and teachers mentioned him...)
It seems that nearly everybody else started reading Tolkien as teenagers. Well, better late than never !!
It was really through my son (then 15)who read LotR (in German) that I became interested. I read the Hobbit, found it delightful, read LotR and was immediatly spellbound! Hardly ever have I been so moved and fascinated by any book. Since then I read anything by or on Tolkien that I can lay hands on. I finished the Silmarillion, read "Tree and leaf", a biography, then Tom Shippey`s "Tolkien , author of the century". Now I`ve ordered and got Tolkiens letters (after so many interesting quotations from these here on the downs i decided I MUST have them) and next I`ll read UT.
None of my friends shares my craze, so I`m ever so glad to have discovered the Barrowdowns!

Hope I haven`t bored you with this too long post... Namarië ! Guinevere

i'm 13, but i'm gonna be 14 on October 23rd (yay!)... i discovered Tolkien in grade 4 when we watched the animated movie and the teacher read it to our class (she didn't read the last chapter for some reason, though, and I waited about a year until I got it from the library and read the rest of it smilies/rolleyes.gif ).
I heard about LotR when my brother got into the books.. hmm... I guess 3 years ago.. I'm not sure. Anyway, I thought he was kinda dorky for being so obsessed over a series of books, and now that I'm obsessed with them he thinks I'm the dork!
Anyway, I started reading LotR about two weeks before the movie came out in theatres, and I finished in mid-March (I know, this seems like a long time, but I kinda stopped reading FotR for a couple weeks after I saw the movie. But I read RotK in 5 days, so there! smilies/tongue.gif)
I'm gonna read the Silm as soon as I can get a copy! (Must..get...money....)

Well, I've told my age and other stuff in other threads (been here for 'bout a month), but since this seems to be the "official thread" for personal info, I'll post here.

Female, 18, from Wisconsin, U.S.A (you've never heard of my town, and it has a stupid name).

I first "discovered" Tolkien by reading some articles about it in the newspaper back in early 2000. I wanted to read the books then because they made it sound so interesting and because they included the Ring inscriptions, which I thought sounded really awesome.

But I didn't get around to reading "The Hobbit" until October of last year (2001) because I figured I'd better get my butt moving if I wanted to read the books before the movie came out.

Then I read "Lord of the Rings" in 6 days. Beat that!!!! (This gave me weeks then to worry about how good or bad the movie would be).

I read "The Silmarillion" this summer, plus "Unfinished Tales" and "Poems and Stories" (which is just a compliation of all his shorter works like Farmer Giles, etc.)

Sorry that was so long! I ramble, yes I do... smilies/rolleyes.gif

For years, I've seen Tolkien stuff all over fantasy catalogs et cetera, and it always intrigued me. When I was 8, I wanted the LOTR computer game, but didn't get it smilies/rolleyes.gif

In July, for my birthday, I got LOTR! Then in August I bought the FOTR DVD and went crazy. smilies/biggrin.gif I'm halfway through the TTT book now, and I bought "The Hobbit" a couple weeks ago and finished it in a matter of days. I have read anything I could get my hands on of Tolkien. I have met so many great friends and had lots of fun with it. smilies/smile.gif

16, girl. I read The Hobbit for the first time when I was eight (after which my dad tried to read LotR to me; needless to say, my eight-year-old attention span couldn't handle it), LotR when I was fifteen (in preparation for the Movie smilies/biggrin.gif), and am currently in the middle of Silmarillion. My dear father got me addicted to Tolkien early on in life, and I have now "borrowed" most of his LotR stuff to put in my Shrine. smilies/biggrin.gif smilies/rolleyes.gif smilies/biggrin.gif smilies/rolleyes.gif smilies/biggrin.gif smilies/rolleyes.gif

Just wanted to say hi!
I'm a girl, 14, going to be fifteen this December.
I'm from southern California, nothing special about that. I just discovered Tolkien two years ago...now my friends think I'm insane
Yay, my first post! smilies/smile.gif

I am a girl, and am 13, I will be 14 in a month and a half. I first started reading Tolkien when I was 10 (The Hobbit) and wanted to read LOTR, but never got around to it until last year when my we started reading them in literature. I was hooked. I bought the other two books (we had only gotten the Fellowship at that time) and read the whole trilogy in 3 days. I could have done better, but I'd had a busy weekend. Right now I am waiting until I can read them again, in the beginning of December. I don't want to read them so much I would get bored(like that's ever going to happen)
