Beren87
02-21-2003, 11:19 PM
It's probably Quenya for "west-brilliance"
elven maiden Earwen
02-21-2003, 11:55 PM
nope but really close.
alaklondewen
02-22-2003, 08:50 AM
I think it's The Flame of the West.
Beren87
02-22-2003, 11:04 AM
Umm...yes, I'm right. Anduril is Quenya for "west-briliiance" (as a literal translation) while when it was known as Narsil (before being reforged) it's name meant "sun-moon". The elvish name for the sword, however, carried a connotation of "red and white flame." The word "andu" means west in Quenya, that much I'm sure of as it also comes into play in the word Andunië which means basically west, as it was a western port. Now, in westron it was called "Flame of the west" but that's not its meaning.

Really? Not bad, then. (Talking over the Internet does, of course, have the capacity (even tendency sometimes smilies/smile.gif) to allow for an amount of slackness in the linguistics that people may employ on its bandiwith...)
What is the collective term for those Elvish tribes other than the Vanyar, the Noldor or the Teleri (those that reached Aman)?
Evisse the Blue
08-25-2003, 07:57 AM
Hmmm...Not to be picky, but that's a bit vague. The Umanyar are Eldar (they hearkened the summons) but Moriquendi (they tarried on the way, and never saw Aman), hence the name: those who did not see Aman.
But you were basically correct, so the floor is yours. smilies/smile.gif
