I believe the Vanyar called him Menelmacar.
Anyone who wish to double check me, I got this from Pg 48 of the 1977 Ballantine Books edition of the Silmarillion.

That's right, Gondolin. And the Sindarin form was Menelvagor.
Good answer. Your turn!

That is it, Gerontius. (It is only mentioned in the Tale of Years as far as I know). Actually it bears much resemblance to the Latin word "geronticos" meaning after the manner of an old man. Talking name again...

Re: New quiz thread - 1 June 2000
Thank you, but my image looks fine (I fixed it).
Alright, I try a real riddle I translated from my German version of the Poetic Edda (bear in mind that this excludes answers from ME alone):
Resolve the riddle I rhymed!
Explain to me the wonder
I saw in front of Delling´s door:
Who is the mighty
that passes over meadows?
Water and woodland he devours:
Wind he fears,
Yet not the valiant,
The halo of the sun he harms.

Re: New quiz thread - 1 June 2000
Nay. As I said, no Middle-Earth-related answers, it´s a general thing or person which exists in our place and time, too.
Although, I must admit, it was a good guess, and your answer would fit, Manwé standing for the wind, the only one Melkor could fear...

Re: New quiz thread - 1 June 2000
Since noone has tried to answer this for a long time, I´ll turn it into a multiple choice question.
The possible answers are:
a)night
b)greed
c)fog
d)the moon
This thread should not be forsaken imho.
btw, does noone of you have the EDDA to look it up from? What a pity.

Re: New quiz thread - 1 June 2000
Fog is the only answer that would fit. What do greed, the night, and the moon have to fear from wind?
Though I don't quite see how fog could harm the sun... usually if there's sun it burns away the fog.
And no, I don't even know what this Edda is so...

Re: New quiz thread - 1 June 2000
Yes, fog is correct, and what is meant by the xpression that it hurts the light of the sun is, imho, simply the point that the sun appears darker through it.
As for the EDDA (I don´t want to brag about it,but...), it is the collection of old-Icelandic songs, poems, lore- and hero-tales, and religious Viking chants which were indeed an influence to Tolkien - almost all names of dwarves are taken from there.

Hmm so I guess it is now my turn?
This is only sort of ME related, but what song contains the Tolkien inspired line: "There's a feeling I get / When I look to the West / And my spirit is crying for leaving / In my thoughts I have seen / Rings of smoke through the trees /
And the voices of those who standing looking."

Well, when he was enthroned, he took the Quenya name Tar-Palantir just like his ancestors before they broke with the Elves. He regretted their behaviour and wanted to renew the friendship with the Elves.
But if you´re asking why he chose the name "He who looks afar", I can only guess: he made the prophecy that when the newly planted White Tree will be hewn, the line of Númenorean kings would perish also; maybe this makes him a farseer, at least he was a clairvoyant.

None may speak save the King only. Three times each year the King spoke, Erukyerme, Erulaitale, and Eruhantale. When people would ascend to the summit three eagles would fly in and land on three rocks, but during the times of the Three Prayers they would circle orerhead.

The Ban of the Valar was that it was forbidden for Men to set foot on the Undying Lands. The Mouth of Sauron was present at the Black Gate when Aragorn and Co. called for Sauron to come to battle. So the Mouth didn't have anything to do with the breaking of the Ban.
Try again.

Right, I told you that it has been about ten years. I'm surprised I get as many right as I do. Nevertheless, I think that it is about his being a Black Numenorean. They sailed to ME in the 2nd (?) age and worshipped Sauron. Surely that's not kosher? I guess they sailed to ME because they couldn't sail to Aman and that was where my garbled memory of the Ban came from. So is Sauron worship the broken-rule in question?

I am not at all certain that this is what you are after; but two things occur to me.
1) The Lieutenant doesn't acknowldge the status of those he deals with (especially Elessar), nevertheless,
2) he offers a treaty which, if he was to ratify it, might be understood to aggrandize his claims. That is, I'm not sure that Elessar, even as King, would be entitled to ratify Sauron's claim to all lands east of the Anduin (for instance: Thingol's, Dain's, or Bard's, much less Rhun, Khand, etc.). Now arguably, Legolas and Gimli might have been proxy to the agreement on behalf of their peoples (though nobody represents Bard). Or, arguably, Elessar was only agreeing not to contest Sauron's claim; that might be legitimate diplomacy. He had, however, only a dubious right to negotiate Rivendell, Lorien, the Havens, the dwarves of the Blue Mountains, etc., into fealty to Sauron (as per clause two).
Of course, I'm not at all sure what the diplomatic protocols of ME are. But these do seem like logical discrepancies to me.

The only thing thats occurs to me is the incident where Aragorn and The Mouth of Sauron have a staring competition. The Mouth draws back and says something like,
"I am an ambassador and may not be assailed!",
to which Gandalf replies (more or less),
"Where such laws hold. It is also the custom for ambassadors to use less insolence."

Alright, alright. I can see this question is causing people to think in too many different direction. Galpsi's answer is much deeper than my tired mind could ever go to search for a question, but Taimar's is getting closer.
This is the answer: "The Mouth of Sauron dared utter the name 'Sauron'." That is expressly forbidden.

Quote:
Sauron does not use Elf-runes. - Legolas

Quote:
Neither does he use his right name. nor permit it to be spelt or spoken. - Aragorn

The lockholes is where criminals in the Shire were locked up - the 'federal' prison, so to speak. They were in Michel Delving, as your question clearly indicated .
I had to look Michel Delving up. And I found some interesting things. Michel is actually 'old English' for great. Tolkien used it when translating from the original Hobbitish. Delving is of course a modern word for 'digging' or 'excavation'. So Michel Delving = great excavation (or any more appropriate synonym.)
What is more interesting is the word ' Galpsi', which is the reduced form of the word Galbasi. That, of course, is Hobbitish for 'stalker'.
Wait ...uh....I meant to say that that is the Hobbitish word for 'Gamgee'. So our pal Galpsi is related to Sam!!
I knew this at one time but had forgotten it.
