Sam was certainly turned invisible by the Ring... and he did, for a short time, have delusions of grandeur. So he was def. affected by the Ring.

I was thinking of the dependency that the Ring caused in its bearer, which hardly appeared in Sam. The matter of the delusions of grandeur is not very clear, in my opinion, since Sam has in that moment only one idea in his mind: rescueing Frodo.

Well done Mithadan, the answer was indeed Tom. Sauron was affected by the ring, or at least he was "consumed with lust for it", even though he made it himself. Sam was affected by the ring very little (although the 'delusions' show that he was). This was probably because he was a guy with no ambitions, meaning he had no need for the ring.

So ask away, Mithadan.

Re: Pippin is caught!

I don´t think the answer appears clearly in any of the works of Tolkien, but, in my opinion, the greatest warrior ever was Hurin Thalion, as:
-Turin didn´t have such a high destiny as Beren (said by Melian)
-Beren needed the help of Finrod and Luthien.
-Earendil wasn´t properly a warrior himself.
...

Your guess was a good one, Grond. In the Silmarillion, when Hurin casts himself into the sea, he is described as the greatest warrior of mortal men, or words to that effect.

Do carry on.

Great question! Feanor asked Galadriel for a strand of her hair but Galadriel declined, probably adding to Feanor's hatred of that side of the family. But, as we all know, Gimli asked for and received three strands of Galadriel's hair.

Re: Pippin is caught!

Great answer, Mithadan! You´re completely right. I expected this thread to last longer but... it´s your turn now! Ask us!

I´d like to now some opinions about this topic: Feanor first thought of the Silmarils when he saw the hair of Galadriel (which had the color of the mixed light of Laurelin and Telperion) and thought of putting this light inside a crystal (made of silima), the same Gimli said he was going to do with those strands, so: do we have a forth Silmaril? Is it related with the prophecy of Mandos about the return of Morgoth and the end of the world?

I think Grond asked that question, right? Grond, you should move your question into the Books forum. There you will receive lots of comments! It doesn't really fit in here and will disrupt the flow of trivia. Great question though!

The name 'Gandalf' actually means that; 'gand' for 'staff' and 'alf' for 'elf'.

Gwaihir is correct.
In LOTR it is said that the power of Wizards resides in their staffs, Gwaihir got this, but it wasn't what I was looking for.
I was looking for Gandalf foresight and his ability to put "images" or "dreams" in the hearts of those who spoke to him.
Ask away, great Eagle!

Just a question about your answer and not for the post since Gwairir gets to do that. But would each wizard get their certain power from who they studied under? Gandalf, the under-study of Irmo ends up with powers similar. Would then Saruman, have powers similar to Aule, and the blue wizards to Orome(weren't they of his order?). I think this would be right since Saruman was so interested in the ring and all.

Yes, Durelen, you would be correct. Maiar under Valar were helpers of their particular Power, so they had to share the same interests and skills.

It's a god thing that I mentioned foresight as well; I wasn't going to at first, but moved it may be by some deep premonition of danger I took the precaution. Anyway; these two Elfs had two unusual twists each in their life stories that they shared; they were both women. Vana got it. Arwen and Luthien were the only two Elves ever to depart from the world as Men and dwell with Illuvitar outside the Circles of the World; they were also two of the three that were wedded to a Man.

Quote:
"Thou art the inmost province of the fading isle
Where linger yet the Lonely Companies.
Still, undespairing, do they sometimes slowly file
Along thy paths with plaintive harmonies:
The holy fairies and immortal elves
That dance amoung the trees and sing themselves
A wistful song of things that were, and could be yet.
They pass and vanish in a sudden breeze,
A wave o bowing grass--and we forget
Their tender voices like wind-shaken bells
Of flowers, their gleaming hair like golden asphodels.

The answer, then, would be 'the Lonely Companies,' holy faeries and immortal elves. Re: Go!

Yeah I think you're giving me that one -- Gandalf says right in "Journey in the Dark" that they came back for mithril. I was remembering the part in "Council of Elrond" where G. says that Balin went away partly in search of Thror's ring. But I'll take your reply as meaning "close enough".

Re: Surprising News

So here's my Q -- everyone probably remembers the scene in Bilbo's room after the Council of Elrond, when Bilbo jokes with Gandalf that he (G.) had been surprised at the news that Gollum had escaped, and G. says with typical arrogance that he knew all about it, was the only one at the Council who was not surprised by anything, etc. etc. But what was reported to Gandalf at the Council that DID surprise him?
