You are correct, noldo! And I'm sure we all know who the ninth Aratar was .... but he isn't counted anymore. Because he wasn't very nice.

I'm sure Echthelion did. I wasted more time last night trying to figure out if Aragorn used that name in Rohan. If you're sure he did, can you tell me where the reference is? I wanted it for that hockey question on Entmoot.
Anyhow, good answer. Ask us!

Yes, I saw that reference too but I've never seen the reference where it says he was called Thorongil in Rohan like I have for Gondor. That was my question.

Help me out, burrahobbit, and tell me where (exactly) that quote is. I've looked before, and never found where it said that he used that disguise in both countries, but only that he had served in them both and was known in Gondor as Thorongil.
Thanks

Re: We need new trivia questions!
Yes indeed...

Quote:
Aragorn undergoes his great journies and errantries. He serves in disguise both Thengel of Rohan and Ecthelion II of Gondor.

This does not name the alias he used in either country (as your quote indicated it did). Earlier text (Appendix A) states that he was known as Thorongil in Gondor. We don't know what pseudonym he went under while serving Thengel.

Re: We need new trivia questions!
I'm looking at the 1976 Ballantine paperback the 1981 Ballantine paperback...and both say nothing about Thorongil.
But I pulled out my 1993 Houghton Mifflin one volume version and it DOES says as Thorongil... so which is it??? I've always assumed they all had the same text. Somebody help!

Re: We need new trivia questions!
The 1970 Houghton Mifflin and the 1974 and 1979 Ballantines all agree with your Ballantines and their more abbreviated Appendix B. Very mysterious.
btw burrahobit, in all the Thorongil excitement I never answered that Marach led the third host of men into Beleriand.

Marach is correct. My copy is the one volume paperback with the gold announcement of the New Line Cinema movie. Houghton Mifflin. It says "This edition of The Lord of the Rings was first published in Great Britain by HarperCollinsPublishers 1991" Someone should write a letter.

This is closer to my heart than all that Silmaril stuff. Brand and Dain were both killed in the Battle of Dale by an eastern horde. The lake-men and dwarves retreated, however, to Erebor where they were unassailable.

As far as I know, it is Old English, so it most probably just is a translation of its real name in the language of the Rohirrim. The meaning of Edoras is nothing but "houses (used for living)".
