Help me out, burrahobbit, and tell me where (exactly) that quote is. I've looked before, and never found where it said that he used that disguise in both countries, but only that he had served in them both and was known in Gondor as Thorongil.

I'm looking at the 1976 Ballantine paperback the 1981 Ballantine paperback...and both say nothing about Thorongil.

But I pulled out my 1993 Houghton Mifflin one volume version and it DOES says as Thorongil... so which is it??? I've always assumed they all had the same text. Somebody help!

As far as I know, it is Old English, so it most probably just is a translation of its real name in the language of the Rohirrim. The meaning of Edoras is nothing but &quot;houses (used for living)&quot;.
