Close enough. White hand on black field on the shields (blood red nails came after ents attacked Orthanc) and white "S" (don't recall if it was Cirth or if it said) in unknown metal on helmets.

Re: Simple question...maybe

Don't feel dumb. Apparently, this is just one of those questions where the information just didn't get top priority in everyone's mental file cabinets. When I first read Hobbit/LoTR I was partial to Dwarves so maybe this tidbit just caught my attention.

OK. BIG hint. The answer's in the appendices. You see there was once this Dwarf named Thror who got a little tetched in the head and did something outstandingly stupid...

BTW, Palandore, welcome!

Re: Simple question...maybe

Thror got his head chopped off by Azog in Moria. He went there to reclaim his ancestral homeland in spite of Durin's Bane. This angered the Longbeards (and several other families) and they waged war on the orcs living in Moria, killing or driving away every last one of them, but they did not reinhabit Moria at this time.

I am going to be away for a day or two, so if I'm right, which I am, I ask this question: What was the last group to enter the Battle of the Five Armies?

If anyone answers this before I get back, if you're right just ask a new one.

Re: Simple question...maybe

Burrahobbit's right. His question is less clear cut. There's a lot of argument re: what are the 5 armies. Are goblins and wargs two armies or one. If one, the answer to the question is the Eagles. If its two, who knows who was the last to join in.

If wargs and goblins are two different armies, the last combatant to enter the battle field was Beorn. But I think Mithadan's correct.

First, the Red Arrow, used by Gondor to ask for help when needed, for example, in the War of the Ring, when it was send to Theoden.

And second, the black arrow that Bard used to kill Smaug, although I'm not sure this was the one you were looking for.

Re. Gandalf

Well, first of all, I think that when you say 'hurted' you mean 'hurt', if it isn't so my answer will be completely wrong . (My english is not very good but I don't remember the word 'hurted')
This way my answer is Moria, when he tries to keep Mazarbul closed and the Balrog almost destroys him; but it could be also in the final battle over Zirak-zigil, but as this time Gandalf is not only hurt but also dies I will choose the first one.
(Surely, the word 'hurted' does exist and has a meaning completely unknown to me, and if it does exist none of my answers will be correct but I tried it)

Well, first of all, I must say that I noticed my grammar error but, since it´s being impossible for me to log in, I couldn't edit the message. Please, forgive me.

Anyway, you're wrong. I meant "obviously" as "visually", and after facing the Balrog Gandalf only appeared to be tired.

Ok, I would just like to clear a few things up so that I may attempt this question...when you say 'obviously hurted' >ahem ahem< you mean, as you have stated, 'visually hurt,' is that right?

And second, do you want to know when he was hurt in terms of years, or where he was hurt, or in what battle etc?

Mablung was one of Faramir's rangers, and he bore the same name as Mablung, a captain to Thingol - he was slain by dwarves, I forget the battle.

Runes in Sigs

As there are only two scripts named by Tolkien, the Tengwar and the Cirth, (and your rune is clearly not Tengwar,) it is the Certhas Daeron that should hold correct as for the alphabet. On further inspection it can be found (esp. in App E of LotR) that that rune represents the sound 'gw' and because you are Gwaihir, it is obvious why the first distinct 'sound' in your name should appear in your sig PS I hope that is informed enough to meet your demand

Re: Yep

In this word-duell with Grishnakh, he relies on the help of his fellow orc soldiers ('We'). Besides, it was most probably not him who slew Boromir, or took the prisoners (who are only hobbits anyway).

I had that there were dozens of Orcs onto the Great Warrior, and many of them wer slain, twenty or thereabouts, before the Orcs succeeded in slaying him; also that so many Orcs onto two untrained Hobbits is quite out-numbering the Hobbits. But your answer is fine. Ask away!

The sig is from 'Aldarion and Erendis', one of my favouite stories, not least because it is the only tale of Numemor in the days of its glory. I only wish that Tolkien had finished it.

I'll wait and see if anyone else gets this question before I post a clue.

Re: Ahah!

Yes, Sharku, all of the dwarf names are in The Seeress' Prophecy, which is part of the Elder Edda. Looking at it again, there is also a hall named Gimle and a giant named Mim. Anyway when I first read Tolkien about a year ago I noticed the names from the Edda and triumphantly asked this question to my Tolkien-phile brother, thinkng I would amaze him with my cross-reference; he answered in about two seconds "They're from the Elder Edda, ASK ME A TOUGH ONE". You M.E. lovers are hard to stump.

Yes... Bilbo was allowed to keep his Mithril Corslet when Thorin ousted him from Erebor. In the late 2900's the coat sat in the Mathom House of Michel Delving until Bilbo left got Rivendell.

I don't remember a river being named, save the 'dry river' that leads to the entrance. The River Minder looks like it could come from the Crissaegrim...but I'm not sure exactly.

And yes! Treebeard was what I was looking for. Cirdan is certainly older than Galadriel, having settled in Beleriand before the Vanya and Noldor left for Valinor.
Gandalf states that Treebeard is oldest in ME, and Treebeard says something about the first darkness, meaning the time just after the first spring of Arda... Quite an old fellow :-) ... Remember the conversation between Aulë and Yavanna, of the Olvar and the Kelvar. Fasinating ! At first I thought that the ents had come to life after the awakening of the elves, but it is not so :-)

30 silver pennies for Merrys horses (then they payed I think 12 or 15 for Bill and I mean the Pony).

Well, it was pearls, that Thingol got from Crida, that he then gave to the dwarves for their aid in building the thousand caves. There was indeed one (if it had a name I forgot) the sieze of a doves egg that the dwarves put into the Nauglamir, the necklace of the dwarves.

Correct Beregond.

Any among: River Gladden, River Silverlode, River Limlight, River Entwash, River Erui, River Sirith and River Poros + some rivers north of the River Gladden, that are not named on the smallscale map I have available.

The River Nimrodel is incorrect because it joins The River Silverlode before joining with the Anduin.

Im pretty sure Drew thinks of the last of the northern palantiri, the one that was not in accord with the others - it was in Elostirion, the tallest of the white towers.
The question is still good - it was the only stone present in the north ant the of the WOTR.

I have a comment on the River Celduin + Carnen question/awnser ... well if you want Carnen (Redwater) included you must also include the Forrest River I think.

Where in Middle-Earth were some Daeron's runes found?

Im not sure what you have in mind... But Dearons runes or the "long runes of Doriath" as they are also called where of course used in Doriath... although you might be thinking of the adaption of these used in Moria, by the dwarves. For example on the tomp of Balin?
