Actually, a tran should have a little hat (^), not a little box on its a. I don't know how to do diacritics on here though. As to what a tran is, that's rather the point of the question, so I'm not saying.

Ah... believe it or not, the â helped. It made me think of original Hobbitish (Westron) and sure enough I found it in my own Encyclopedia index (which I am endlessly working on)

A trân is a smial, as in Great Smials. Its a hobbit hole.

Oh, shoot...I got so busy trying to figure out what a trân was that I forgot what the question was. I don't know which are the best. Those called Smials are the most luxurious. And Bag End was one of the best.

As for the ^, I don't know how to do them here so I just knock em out in Word and paste em here.

Thank you for the word tip. I always thought Brandy-Hall and the Great Smials in Tuckburough were the real Versailles(es) of the Hobbiton, but Bag End is certainly top flight. Ask us!
