How about some trivia questions that involve SUPERLATIVES (largest, longest, oldest, etc.)?

I will pose one:

BRAVEST --

According to the narrator, what was the BRAVEST thing that Bilbo ever did?

Erm...I'm not real up to date with the Hobbit (meaning I've had to read all these dodgy books for English in between Tolkien and haven't read the Hobbit for half a year or so ) but I suppose it would be...when he was in Mirkwood, fighting spiders. I know that's not right, but it's a sound guess to my mind. I think it was something on Erebor. Ai! Btw, good idea Oddyseus. It's always good to have a few new games to make the place look all spiffy.

Re: Herm

The bravest thing Bilbo ever did was to continue down the tunnel to Smang's lair.

Re: Superlatives

Voronwë is correct -- continuing down the tunnel after hearing Smaug SNORING ! The narrator thought this was braver than battling 40 or 50 giant spiders for some reason.

Your turn, Voronwë.

Re: Superlatives

I'll keep to the superlative theme.

Who was the oldest (known) elf in Middle Earth at the time of the War of the Ring?

Yup

I was, infact, looking for Gandalf. Saruman would also have fitted the bill, but I don't feel that he was wise enough. He allowed himself to be led by the Ring, and evil desires. Any number of the Eldar would have also fitted - Cirdan, Elrond and Galadriel for example. Continue, o Impaler!

Based on letters eh? Too bad I haven´t read it. Anyway I guess Melkor or Morgoth seems too obvious, seeing your way of asking and the explicite reference to Letters. So I´ll go for Sauron.. just a wild guess, but questions may provide a clue to their own answer as I´ve explained above. I might be totally wrong though...

Hmm...

I´m really amazed I got that one right.
And I think H-I´s answer is far more reasonable; Sauron and even Morgoth started out good and turned to evil later. Ungoliant on the other hand 'devoured light' and made Morgoth call upon his buddies the Balrogs. So one might say, very cautiously (I wouldn´t want to offend anybody), that JRRT was mistaken on his own work here.
Any thoughts on this one?

As for the thread... I´ll have to think, so be patient please..

ok ok here it finally is:
There were three hosts of Elves travelling to the West in the deeps of time some time after they awoke at the lake of Cuvienen (spelling?).

What were the people of the FIRST host called, and by whom was it lead?
Same for second
Same for LAST

You may skip the second since it isn´t a superlative but I just felt it should be put in as well for completeness

Re: Hmm...

Hmm...why can't anyone spell Cuivenen?

Ungoliant fits the picture quite well, although any of the dragons does too. Glaurung was [created?] as a servant of Morgoth. An evil servant; Glaurung (and for that matter any of the other dragons) did not know kindness. Glaurung and Smaug unmercifully killed, as did Ancalagon (in the rather short passage describing him ) and Scatha for an example.

Although, the Ring. The Ring was created as a sort of Sauron-container, an object symbolising the essence of evil and power that Sauron had concentrated into it; which, IMO, makes it a purely evil object; never starting out as good or with a decent purpose (as did Morgoth and Sauron along with the Balrogs etc.) From my perspective, however, it was an animate object...which would make it far more evil than Morgoth and Sauron. But - from this there arises the fact that it could only enhance power and not be a power of its own, and without a powerful wielder it was nothing; although to some extent this is not true. And to some extent it is, and I am rambling on for no reason. :sigh:

To save a debate, I shall pursue this point no further. Case closed

Re: Hmm...

Not yet... I don´t wish to change this thread in some kind of books topic, but I have to make a few remarks here.
Everything and everyone you name all had there origins either in Morgoth or in Sauron and since they were initially good, you cannot consider these things truly evil, because at its deepest roots lies not evil but good.
And therefore I think JRRT has put in Ungoliant; as a real counterpart of all goodness. She´s not caring about anything besides herself. She has no interest at all in the domination of others as is so strongly connected to the evil of Morgoth and Sauron, she only desires to devour all light, or the destruction of everything. Destruction is not connected to evil in such a way as domination, considering Eru´s destruction of Numenor and the explicit naming of the 'Free Peoples'.
The general evil in Middle-Earth is that of domination, that of Morgoth. I think Ungoliant is beyond that evil, and therefore she is not evil in that way; since she doesn´t care about anything, good or evil, only in 'devouring'.
In a way this is similar to Tom Bombadil, who is considered 'good', but he really doesn´t care about anything outside his 'own little realm'. I guess good means one´s willing to fight evil, and evil to fight good. And since Ungoliant fights good and evil, and Bombadil fights none, in my opinion you cannot count them evil or good. Or you might say their are different kinds of good and evil, or that they are truly evil and truly good and the rest is just somewhere in the middle.
As you observe I can also do a bit of rambling for no reason...

Greetings gildor

Blind Guardian is a heavy metal's group.
They're German, and in my opinion, they're one of the best groups ever.
Most songs of Blind Guardian deal with LOTR, Silmarillion...

They have a song in which that is said of Fingolfin, that's why Sharku said he relied in them.

Yes. Undertowers, to be exact! Though there were great collections at Great Smials and Brandy Hall, the one at Undertowers included the Red Book of Westmarch for a long time.

Third time lucky Grond! From the final chapter of Return of the King: "Spring surpassed his wildest hopes. His trees began to sprout and grow, as if time was in a hurry... In the Party Field a beautiful young sapling leaped up: it had silver bark and long leaves, and burst into golden flowers in April. It was indeed a mallorn, and was the wonder of the neighbourhood."

I'm sorry I saw Luthien but missed Morwen. Morwen is correct. Ask one, Telchar.

Ok - Im looking for the oldest truly mortal person that Frodo had conversation with in Book 1 of The Fellowship of the Ring - when I say "truly mortal", I mean: Nobody that had their lives prolonged by any external power like say: The Lord of the Nazgul or Bilbo ...

Maybe Gloin? Frodo spoke to him at Rivendel, just after he had recovered from his wound.

Nope Beregond - The Gaffer was born in TA 2926 (five years older than Aragorn) - Im looking for someone a little older

I cant find any reference to Lobelias age - I suspect she was younger than Otho. She died in TA 3020 being "over a hundred years old" - If I suspect correctly she had been born between TA 2913-2919.
But I was thinking of Otho, who was born in TA 2912.

You're on Odysseus

What type of being could see farthest in M.E., it is reported?

(Not 100% sure of this one but I'll see if anyone's guess matches my answer.)

Gwaihir, perhaps?

The passage I'm thinking of says that " ______________ 's sight exceeded even that of the eagles". Or something like that.

I guess that's correct although not what I was thinking of. In UT it says of Glaurung that his dragon's sight was greater even that that of eagles, and I assumed that eagles cd see farther than elves, so . . . . But I said "beings" so Valar is correct. Ask away Telchar.

But what about the Palantiri? Would you consider them to be heirlooms? and would they be older?
