What was Carnil, who made it and what colour was it?

And by the Wight's new rule, the source of this question is in the Silmarilion.

This is a UT question, but you may be able to guess or figure out the answer by giving it some thought.

The area around Tharbad was wide open grasslands. But once it had all been thickly forested. Where did the trees go? What happened to the forests?

Ok; The Elves gave at least 9 species of trees to the Numenoreans as gifts; name those that are known.

Due to request from RKittle: answers are found in UT and HISTORY.

Mallorn is 1

Laurinque is not.
UT states that it was a mistaken belief that the tree was brought in seed by the Eldar (and named in honor of Laurelin from its descriptions).

Oiolaire is 2
Lairelosse is 3
Nessamelda is 4
Vardarianna is 5
Taniquelasse is 6
Yavannamire is 7

There are at least 2 other species (one of them can still be found in UT).

Ancalagon the Black slain by Earendil the Mariner
Smaug of Erebor slain by Bard, King in Dale
Scatha the Worm slain by Fram, King of the Eothed
Glaurung Father of Dragons slain by Turin Turmabar in Teiglin

More dragons appear in Tolkien's works, such as those who assailed the Dwarves of the Grey Mountains, and those who helped Acalagon in the assault upon Vingilot; but they are not named and their banes arenot mentioned.

Well, there is no doubt that your answer is correct, but it is incomplete as well. I wanted to know ALL the dragons whose names are mentioned in Tolkien's works. It seems that you've forgotten that Tolkien it's not only Middle-Earth, and he also wrote some short stories where dragons also appear.

If Jes wants to pass you the turn, I'll agree, but I consider it's better to give the complete answer <img src=smile.gif ALT=":)"> .

Re: dragons

Crysophylax was the dragon who appeared in &quot;Farmer Giles of Ham&quot;, one of Tolkien´s short stories. It wasn't killed, but was defeated by Master Aegidius (Farmer Giles).
This thread it's all yours, Gwaihir.

Re: dragons

You like dragons, don't you Gwaihir? I was going to say the Dwarves of Belegost did, but I am not sure if it was even them or the Dwarves of Nogrod that battled with Gluarung. Then I realized that was not the first time Gluarung issued from Angband. Fingon and his archers is the answer I believe you are looking for my good man.

There's more than one. One is &quot;Grond crawled on&quot;. The second is a few paragraphs later, &quot; In rode the Lord of the Nazgul...&quot; I suspect there are many more, though the two above were clearly repeated intentionally for stylistic reasons.

I was looking for this phrase: &quot; But it was no orc-chieftain or brigand that led the assault upon Gondor.&quot;, which was also clearly repeated intencionally for stylistic and enphatic reasons (it's repeated in two different chapters, the second time as the first phrase in 6th chapter).

Maiar

Well...Eonwe always stood out as important, being in my mind as strong as the lesser Valar; the herald of Manwe and the leader of the Host of the Valar. Saruman was the most powerful Istari, even if he did become evil; Osse seems fairly powerful, ravaging the coasts, and Ulmo apparently has no control over him. And then who could forget Sauron himself, the Second Dark Lord. Who almost became more powerful than Morgoth in his glory; and he was said to be the greatest of the Valar before his evilness. Others apart from those four could include Gothmog and Ariel, both powerful fire Spirits; Gandalf and Melian.

I wouldn't say that Saruman was nearly a Vala. Nor was he the most powerful Istar. Gandalf was. But Eonwe and Osse are of course correct, and I'll accept Melian. And who could forget Sauron. Yes, ask away.

Almost quoting Faramir when quoting Gandalf:
&quot;Mithrandir among the Elves, Tharkûn to the Dwarves; Olórin I was in my youth in the West that is forgotten, in the South Incánus, in the North Gandalf; to the East I go not.&quot;
Mithrandir -&gt; grey Pilgrim.
Incánus -&gt; spy from the North.
Gandalf -&gt; elf with a staff.
I don't know what does Tharkûn mean, but, since the dwarves didn't teach his language to anybody...
