Mount Gundabad, the join between the Misty and Grey mountains, held the capital of the Goblins.

It damned surely was Gundabad. The etiquette discourages it (although I kind of wish you would go ahead and ask).

Under normal circumstances, I would have posted the next question after Suldalhel's long abscense. But since I had already told him not to post again without a long wait, I didn't want to be a hypocrite.
When Smaug first issued from Erebor, Bilbo and all of the Dwarves except two were at the upper camp. Who were the two that were left behind at the lower camp, and of these which one was pulled up to safety first?
(Hint : The answer can be found in the Hobbit.)

Sorry about my long absence, it was my birthday and I had to prevent the Sackville-Bagginses of my family from looting my room. The two dwarves were obviously Bombur(he being the fattest and last rescued) leaving the other and first to be rescued Bofur!! I shall try to pay closer attention to the replies from now on. But seeing on how my absences shall be increasingly longer I hope that someone else shall take up the quiz while Im gone.
Goodbye and farewell wherever you fare and may your eyries recieve you at the journey's end!!!!

The Dwarves and Bilbo, after breaking away from the montstrous spiders, came a tlast to the edge of a clearing where Elf banquets had been held. There they found they could rest untroubled by the beasts, but whether this was because of some fair magic that still lingered there from the fair folk, or because the trees and boughs were less dense, no one can be sure.

It's a palace! It's a treasury! It's also a fortress! But wait! There's more! It's a first-class dungeon! What would you expect to pay for this fabulous subterranean lair? We'll also throw in several casks of the finest Dorwinian vintage. Sounds great? We'll also include a secret trap-door over the Forest River, suitable for removing pesky dwarves...
(p.s., I guess that makes 4)

Is that at me, Suldaladhel? I'm caught in a flurry of cross-posting! Gandalf convinced the White Council, nominally led by Saruman at the time, to attack the "sorceror" known as The Necromancer at his fortress Dol Guldur. The Necromancer was driven out (retreated from) Mirkwood. It was subsequently revealed (Gandalf at least suspected -- maybe already knew? Saruman at least knew) that the Necromancer was none other than Sauron. This all occurred Third Age 2491. How's that for more specific?

Exactly right, galpsi! After he sneaks past the sharp-eyed lookout following his narrow escape through the back door, it says, "It is a fact that Bilbo's reputation went up a very great deal with the dwarves after this... If they had still doubted that he was really a first-class burglar... they doubted no longer."
I thought this one would be a gimme following as closely on the heels as it did to your back door question.
Ask!!

An audible "crack" sets Bilbo's mind toward the solution of entry into Erebor. What causes this sound?

It was the sound of a thrush trying to crack open a snail it had caught by knocking it on a stone.

What became of the mounts on which Bilbo, Gandalf, and the dwarves left the Shire?

I suspect they became the main course in a Misty Mountain Goblin feast. In any case, I don't think they were ever seen again after Thorin & Co. made their dash to freedom. So much for the loyalty of dwarves.

Aha! The horse on which Gandalf left the Shire was traded in for a more mountain-path-worthy loaner provided by Elrond before tackling the Misty Mountains. So presumably Gandalf's lucky mount dodged the bullet and stayed in the green pastures of Rivendell. Tricky question, galpsi!
