A new question (I asked this in another thread but I was out of turn):

Everyone probably remembers the scene in Bilbo's room after the Council of Elrond, when Bilbo jokes with Gandalf that he (G.) had been surprised at the news that Gollum had escaped, and G. says with typical arrogance that he knew all about it, was the only one at the Council who was not surprised by anything, etc. etc. But what was reported to Gandalf at the Council that DID greatly surprise him?

I even pulled out the book on this one, skimming through this very long chapter. And I still couldn't figure it out. If someone doesn't answer soon, I'm going to have to read the chapter correctly!

maybe he was surpised by information provided by Boromir, concerning knowledge still preserved in the South, though lost in the North, that Isildur returned from Mordor to Minas Tirith first. Still, I doubt he was surprised greatly enough to count my answer true

RK's post had me worried that I had mis-remembered, so I went back and checked. There WAS something told to Gandalf at the Council at which the wizard "paused astonshed". That is what my question refers to.

P.s. I suppose this is a truly trivial trivia Q, but I have always been amused by Gandalf's (suposedly a sort of demi-god, right?) all-too-human conceit. E..g. when he reports to Frodo how Elrond swamped the ringwraiths, and insists on adding that he (Gandalf) played a part too.

The answer is Frumgar. You can find two references to him in The Lord of the Rings: first, in the section of Appendix A which deals with "The House of Eorl"; later, in Appendix B, under the entry for TA 1977.

Okay, here is an easy one <WEG>.

Who was Rimbedir?

I suppose that was a bit too obscure. Since I'm traveling right now and don't know when I'll get back online again, I'll go ahead and provide the answer.

Rimbedir was an Elvish name Tolkien proposed to himself for Trotter (the Hobbit ranger in the early versions of The Lord of the Rings who was eventually replaced by Strider the Dunadan ranger). I don't have the source handy but it was either The Return of the Shadow or The Treason of Isengard.

The pair of magic diamond studs given to the Old Took, The tales he told, The fireworks, and the Adventures. Im pretty sure that covers everything.

Gandalf broke the bridge to send the Balrog (AKA Durin's Bane) into the abyss it spanned... thats the only reason i can think off... unless he had the thought in the back of his mind that if it didnt sink the Balrog then at least the other creatures behind couldnt get across...

That is why I didnt think I should have asked that question. I didnt want to turn down people for good guesses, so I will give it to you Watcher.

The real reason I was thinking of was because he did not want Aragorn and Boromir (And maybe Legolas too) to try and come and help him. I remembered reading that they were running up to help and that is when Gandalf broke the bridge. So I always thought that he did it not only to keep the orcs from coming and to kill the Balrog, but also to save his freinds from trying to fight the foe that would kill them if they tried.

Actually I dont know how kings were burried in ancient Israel. It was not what I was thinking of though JRRT said that the monoteist ancient Israel was the place that resembled Gondorian tradition on religion closest.
Think: Crown + burial

No No - Beregond - You got it rigth! I was a astonished too! It is the ancient egyptians.

For one thing the Faraos wore a high helmlike thingy very much alike to the crown of Gondor - just without the wings - And the Gondorians was very obsessed with tombs and they embalmed their Kings.
Tolkien wrote this in a letter to a woman who asked, among other things, about the design of the crown of Gondor. In the letter he also made a sketch drawing of the crown

Since asking the question, I can't find the reference, although I thought it was Mirkwood rather than the Misty Mts. But since I can't prove you're not right, you take it Telchar. If you find the Misty Mts. reference let me know.

Quote:
From the Uruk-Hai - TT:
'But what are we going to do at sunrise?' said some of the Notherners.
'Go on running' said uglúk. 'What do you think? Sit on the grass and wait for the whiteskins to join the picnic?'
'But we cant run in the sunlight.'
'You'll run with me behind you,' said uglúk. 'Run! Or you'll never see your beloved holes again. By the White Hand! What's the use of sending out mountain-maggots on a trip, only half trained for...

At the moment I can'f find any other reference. Notherners, called mountain-maggots could be from both places, but most likely (I think) from the Misty Mountains... as Im sure I've read elsewhere...

Anyway: What did men call Eärendils ship Vingilot?

You put me in a dilemma guys!

Foam-Flower is the Westron translation of Anduniac Rothinzil. The latter being the name i sought. BtW Erramë was the ship Tour buildt and sailed West in with Idril.

So you're both rigth - the first one of you, who read this can ask the next question
