Alrighty then: Since almost all of you are deeper into Tolkien than I will ever be...I've decided to start my own trivia chain for those of us who don't have a clue what the other peoples(hobbits, dwarfs, elves, etc.) mean when they ask their impossible questions.
How many dwarfs accompanied Bilbo in The Hobbit? and name them!
Gimli Son Of Gloin
04-20-2002, 11:34 AM
The names of the drawes are Thorin, Oin, Gloin, Dwalin, Balin, Bifur, Kili, Fili, Bofur, Dori, Bombur, Nori, Ori, and there are 13.
Gimli Son Of Gloin

Knowing that I'm right, i'll go right ahead with my question.
By what name do the people of Gondor refer to Gandalf?
Telchar
04-20-2002, 02:14 PM
*Giggles*
Arwen Imladris
04-20-2002, 02:26 PM
Mithrandir
Is that right?
If it is then my question is: What is Pippin's last name?
The_Elf_Girl
04-20-2002, 05:26 PM
Pippin's last name is Took.
KingCarlton
04-21-2002, 12:22 AM
Arwen Imladris - you were incorrect.
Incánus is Gandalf’s name in the south(Gondor) of Middle-earth.
Mithrandir is the Elven name for Gandalf.
Voronwe
04-21-2002, 04:35 AM
No, she was correct. If you want a quote I can provide one.
KingCarlton
04-21-2002, 04:44 AM
Just one qoute....let's hear it then.
Voronwe

'Mithrandir we called him in elf-fashion,' said Faramir, 'and he was content. Many are my names in many countries, he said. Mithrandir among the Elves, Tharkûn to the Dwarves; Olórin I was in my youth in the West that is forgotten, in the South Incánus, in the North Gandalf; to the East I go not.'
It is possible, depending on which version of a note found in Unfinshed Tales that you wish to believe, that Incánus was a Quenya name of Gandalf's in Gondor about 1800 years before the Lord of the Rings. However it is also possible that it is a word in the language of Harad meaning 'North-spy'. In any case it seems clear from Faramir's statement that Mithradir was Gandalf's name in Gondor at the time of the Lord of the Rings.
After all that, I believe it's The_Elf_Girl's turn to ask a question.
The_Elf_Girl

This is a really easy one but I'm so tired I can't come up with anything else. Sorry.
What is the name of Sam's first daughter?
Arwen Imladris
04-21-2002, 07:33 PM
Ha Ha! I was right! smilies/smile.gif
Elanor (Sp?) One of the flowers from Lothlorien.
Was I right?
If I was then the next question is:
How old was Bilbo when Frodo was 33?
KingCarlton
04-22-2002, 02:35 AM
Allright, I stand corrected...but I am not going to sulk.
I wonder what happened to the one who posed that question.
Bilbo was 111 at the time Frodo was 33.
Eleventy one(or is it eleventy eleven) as those insipid fools called it.
well...???
Arwen Imladris
04-22-2002, 02:09 PM

Elenya
05-23-2002, 03:14 PM
My dad has this kind of old book called The Tolkien Companion, by J.E.A. Tyler, published by Picador in 1977 (It's one of my biggest pet peeves when people don't give enough information for me to find what I'm looking for). It's like an encyclopaedia for Tolkien. Not everythings in there, though, but it's a really useful little thing!!
Elenya

Lindolirian

They let him climb trees to feel the breeze and one day a horde of Orcs (that Gollum did not know or ask to free him) attacked his guards but i believe he escaped from both the elves and orcs, came to moria, got lost, and picked up the trail of the Fellowship at the West Gate.

Okay, seriously: What was Gandalf's other names?
Elenya
06-11-2002, 09:24 AM
I think you mean What were? But anyhoo:
He was known as Mithrander or the 'Grey Wanderer' to the elves; to the dwarves he was known as Tharkun; and in his youth, he was known as Olorin.
Lómelindi
06-11-2002, 04:38 PM
Gandalf had four other names:
Incánus ~ "in the South" during his mid-Third Age travels

Tharkûn ~ to the Dwarves
Olórin ~ in his youth
