Correct. BTW, the beryl is related to the emerald but tends to be lighter in color at gem quality and a milky light green below gem quality. Ask away.

YEs. His will was in with the Ring. And 'other documents' most likely including those adoption papers. I'm sure that Lobelia went over those with a fine-tooth comb. <img src=smile.gif ALT=":)">

Anglachel is one. Aranruth was Thingol's sword and was passed on through Elros to the Kings of Numenor. It was not stated to be made from meteoric material. However, Anglachel should lead you to two more. The last one is more obscure.

OT: Comment on Mithadan's 100th post
Wow! 100 posts is a definite milestone at the Downs. We have a lot of registered users, but few that post more than a handful of remarks before they fade into the Void.
Though there are levels in between, the highest set level is 500 posts. At that moment you become a Ghost Prince of Cardolan and immediately eligible for a personal title. Of course, if your quality posts continue, we may have to consider dubbing you with a personal moniker sooner than 500.
Thanks, Mithadan!

"Tremendous service", indeed (grumble)! What, perchance is RGEO (it took me several minutes to figure out Adventures of Tom Bombadil)? By process of elimination, I went to Letters, but, as you know, that volume has an excreble index (I don't have the new edition). As I'm not inclined to make guesses (although I have suspicions) and don't have time to research, I'll get back to you, O Detail Oriented One.

Re: Items In Middle Earth
I gotcha, Red...I'll put them all...even thought I know you know most of them.
LOTR - The Lord of the Rings
HOB - The Hobbit
AOTB - The Adventures of Tom Bombadil
RGEO - The Road Goes Ever On
UT - Unfinished Tales
SIL - The Silmarillion
HIST - The History of Middle-Earth (I guess all of them, if that is what HIST is)
That doesn't leave much...like maybe...Tolkien (Biography), A Tolkien Compass(?), The Complete Guide to Middle-Earth, The Letters of Tolkien....?? I dunno...

For the Acro challenged:
Lord of the rings, Hobbit, Adventures of tom bombadil, Road goes ever on, Unfinished tales, Silmarillion, History (series).
Add to the list LETTERS as a place to NOT go.
I did say 'little known'...
The info is available in at least 2 other books not mentioned however.

Re: Items In Middle Earth
One hint too many. Talk about obscure! Menelluin. A plaque bearing the emblem of Idril Celebrindal , a corn flower pattern, "saved from Gondolin and descending through Earendil and his son Elros to Numenor, whence it was saved by Elendil and taken to Gondor". Plate No. 47, Heraldic Devices, Pictures by J.R.R. Tolkien. Nassssty riddle.
What's the second book?

Re: Items In Middle Earth
The Nauglamir/Silmaril was possessed by Elwe during the First Age but Earendil brought it to Valinor during the First Age. Since arguably it occaissionally returns to Valinor and may have been there at some point during the Second Age, I'll redefine the question. What item possessed by Elwe during the First Age did not make its way to Valinor until the Second Age?
This is a little tricksy. So, the latter part of the Second Age is a (very) little hint.

Re: Items In Middle Earth
Congrats on your 100th post Wight Saulotus.
Indeed, Aranruth was Thingol's sword and became the sword of the kings of Numenor. Although not stated expressly in Akallabeth, when Ar-Pharazon stepped onto the shores of Valinor and was buried in the landslides thst followed, Aranruth would have been buried with him. BTW, there's an excellent letter from Tolkien from 1958 explaining that the Valar had to lay down their governance of Arda for that time because their duty was to foster the Children of Iluvatar rather than make war upon them.
Ask away.

Sweet! I guess it's just you and me on this thread, Mithaden! Okay. This one might actually bring more people in.
Name all of the "Hills" in Tolkien's works. When I say Hills, I mean a name starting with Amon. Name all the Amons, as it were. I count 11.
First one to get all 11, or the most, posts the next one. <img src=smile.gif ALT=":)">

I can give you three more off the top of my head.
Amon Anwar (Hill of Awe, where the tomb of Elendil was placed)
Amon Ereb (Hill in the Silmarillion where Denethor (the elf) died)
Amon Obel (Hill in Brethil where the Haladin lived)
Good question, by the way!

Okay, I wasn't thinking of that one, either. I think that's because I know it as Dol Guldur (that's what you meant, right?) and I have never heard it referred to as Amon Lanc. But, nevertheless, there are still 3 more to go that I am thinking of. We can stop soon, but let's see if anyone else wants to play. This is educational. <img src=smile.gif ALT=":)">

getting even closer... but Norwegian had changed a lot since older days compared to the 'ideal' language JRRT thought of. Maybe Norwegian did not have the air of myth which the tongue in question possesses... the names of the dwarves and of Gandalf are taken from a source in this respective language, this might be a reaso why JRRT was so delighted in his late days to here "The Hobbit" got translated.

Quenya was heavily influenced by Suomi (Finnish), and to a lesser degree by Latin and Greek (although Q. is less 'consonantical' than both).

That's not quite what I was looking for, Saul. Tengwar is indeed an old script, Tengwar of Rúmil being the oldest. However, Tengwar of Fëanor came along after Rúmil.
For the answer to my question, think more of a language than a script. The answer is found in the Appendices of LotR. <img src=smile.gif ALT=":)">

Re: Items In Middle Earth
Ok; you asked for scripts and letters so I assumed that meant scripts and letters.
Language-wise would be Sindarin, as it was the only widely used Elvish language in the Third Age (as asked), as Quenya had fallen into an archaic elf-latin.
The Sindarin used in the Third Age was that developed from ancient Telerin (Lindarin) with some added Quenya (mostly synonymous with the term Noldorin) words (of which Quenya was enriched with some Valian words). No other Elvish tongues or scripts were used in the Third Age in Middle-earth (as specified in the question).

Alright, this might not have been a really clear question, and perhaps I do not know that much about it. I don't claim to know as much as anyone here. <img src=smile.gif ALT=":)">
However, in Appendix E, II, the first sentence is this:
<blockquote>Quote:<hr> The scripts and letters used in the Third Age were all ultimately of Eldarin origin...<hr></blockquote>
I was just keeping with the trend and asking a language question, and when I saw that, I thought it might be a good one. I guess it was a little hazy...my bad. <img src=ohwell.gif ALT=":/">

Since Jes will be away for a while (sorry for your loss, Jes), I´ll ask.
What item did Galadriel give to Aragorn when the Fellowship was leaving Lothlorien? Who had made it?

Re: Items In Middle Earth
Galadriel gave Aragorn a decorated sheath for Anduril and the Elessar in a silver eagle brooch from Arwen. The Elessar's origin is not settled but that is in UT.

Re: Items In Middle Earth
Correct!
You could have explained the origin of Elessar (you knew it was in UT):
The original Elessar was made by Enerdhil and was taken to Valinor by Earendil, from here there are two explanations:
- It was brought back to Middle-Earth by Gandalf
- Celebrimbor made a second Elessar for Galadriel
Ask us!

This question should have been reserved for the UT thread, strictly speaking.
Jewls and heirlooms of Eorl, as well as treasures found in mounds far and wide. A golden casket on a necklace, no doubt inteded for the Ring; but most precious of all was the gliimering Elendilmir of Isildur, lost when he was slain by Orcs.

Rings on Weathertop
This will be disputed Gwaihir, because no-one knows for sure whether Nazgul held their rings or not; however most would argue that they did not hold their rings and Sauron held them under his power, because if they did have them on their fingers Frodo would've seen them when he put the One Ring on. Taking the point of view that they did NOT hold their rings, Two - Narya, that Gandalf received from Cirdan when he first arrived, and the One Ring that Frodo bore (obviously.) However, if you choose to count the Nazgul, the answer is seven. <img src=smile.gif ALT=":)">

Re: Tower Hills
Was the stone of Emyn Beraid the stone of Elendil? That who did only looked to Tol Eressea where the Master of the Stones lives.
BTW, the answer of the previous question would have been 11, if we count the Rings of the Nazgûl; since all nine attacked Gandalf at the Weathertop.

Thanks Grond. Btw, what do you mean by 'who did ever hold the Ring?' Do you mean who are the Ringbearers, or who held it for the longest, or who held it but did not wear it? Or am I missing something? Hmm...<img src=ohwell.gif ALT=":/">

The Ring
I considered Gandalf as one of the people who had held the Ring, since he throw it to the fire when he was with Frodo, but there is still one more.
The one left is not mentioned in LOTR, but his existance it's obvious.

Re. The Ring
I think I found what you were looking for. Maybe you're meaning that time, when Frodo rests at Rivendel after the battle against the Nazgûl at Bruinen's side and somebody changes the chain the Ring was held in. I think that unknown person could be Elrond or maybe Gandalf but the discussion is totally unnecessary as he is not mentioned at all (at least as far as I know).

A certain member of Rohan's royal family slew Scatha and in response to a demand by some dwarves for return of their horde sent this with his response. Who was the sender and what did he send?

b. Pipeweed is first planted (by Tobold the hobbit)
c. Smeagol takes the One Ring from Deagol;
d. The fall of Minas Ithil.

Re: Items in ME
I had the ring of Barahir in mind, but I was thinking that Elrond gave it to him as King Elessar, along with the scepter and crown. Elessar was the name I used in my Q, so it was technically not correct, as the ring was given to Estel. (Several ppl have stated in posts that the rule of this room is that you have to state the right name for the time period that the question refers to.) So you got the Q right even though I screwed it up.

Tricksy. Name the unusual weapon wielded by many of Dain's Dwarves in the Battle of Five Armies.

Let me think, at the beginning, there were only three palantiri left: those of Orthanc, Minas Tirith and Minas Morgul. During the war of the Ring, the one of Minas Morgul (which was in Barad-dûr) was destroyed. So te only palantiri left were those of Orthanc and Minas Tirith.
I don't know why I feel I have forgotten something, but I can't remember what.
