View Full Version : Elvish Trivia

In this thread you can only ask questions that have something to do with elves.
First Question:
Who were the Falathrim?
Lindolirian
07-03-2002, 09:06 PM
The Elves of the Falas, or coast. Cirdan was their leader.
Arwen Imladris
07-03-2002, 10:13 PM
Yup, your turn Lindolirian! smilies/smile.gif

Which Elvish folk forsook the Great March to live in the Vales of Anduin?
Daniel Telcontar
07-05-2002, 12:50 PM
The Teleri is my guess.
Orome
07-06-2002, 03:23 PM
The Sindar, an offshoot of the Teleri
Daniel Telcontar
07-06-2002, 03:43 PM
If it comes to that, then there is also the Nandor, and perhaps some Silvan elves.

Orome

hi
how long until we are answered?
also, i checked, and the sindar were the main group that never went over. the teleri was the group that lagged behind

I'm not sure that I understand you correct. The Teleri was the third of the Kindreds, and the only one where not all of the elves made the journey. The teleri elves that stayed behind became the Sindar, Nandor and Silvan elves.
Orome
07-07-2002, 08:35 PM
what i'm saying is that one of the groups that specifically stayed behind in middle earth, and never saw the light of Aman was the sindar. the nandor also did not complete the journey. the Avari/Silvan elves just plain never began the "Great journy"
if you are wondering about the lagged part, what i mean is that the teleri did not go over to Aman at the same time as the other Eldar.

07-07-2002, 08:46 PM
the silvan elves and the teleri are diferent groups.
oops. i ignored the vales of he audin part. the silavan elves should be the correct answer, in which case Dan is next

Alright, I understand you now. Sorry it took some time. But I think we should wait for Lindolirian's answer before posting the next question.
Orome
07-08-2002, 08:27 PM
ok. if no answer in two days, then just go.
too many threads "die" when the next question never gets asked
what does the Newly Deceased under my name mean?

Hey Orome!!!! Welcome to the Downs! Have fun here, I know you will smilies/wink.gif And careful not to get hooked on this site! Too late for me!
Ok, the newly deceased means that your newly deceased. Your dead. Get it? Barrow Downs...place for the dead....newly deceased...hehe... smilies/evil.gif
Hope you get it!

07-08-2002, 08:58 PM

Daniel Telcontar is correct. Your turn.
Daniel Telcontar
07-09-2002, 03:52 AM
Who received kingship of the Noldorne as a gift?
Orome
07-09-2002, 08:44 AM
The house of Fingolfin was given ithe overlordship of the Noldor for rescuing Maedhros from Thangorodrim, i think.
Daniel Telcontar
07-09-2002, 08:49 AM
Yes, Fingolfin received the High Kingship from Maedhros. You're free to continue.
Orome
07-09-2002, 09:17 PM
To which elf did Eol give the Anglachel/ Gurthang/ the Black Sword in exchange for permission to live in Nan Elmoth?
Lothiriel Silmarien

Eol gave Anglachel/Gurthang to Thingol.
Orome

What was the name of the 'White Lady'?
Lothiriel Silmarien
07-10-2002, 06:19 PM
Yup smilies/biggrin.gif Your turn!
Lindolirian
07-10-2002, 06:19 PM
Aredhel, sister of Turgon.
Lothiriel Silmarien
07-10-2002, 06:20 PM
Ok, that was confusing....wasn't your post before mine? Oh well, still your right!
Lindolirian
07-10-2002, 06:28 PM
Oh yes sorry, I reposted to see if my picture would work and it does. Thanx.
Which elf was a friend of Orome, and recieved a gift from him?
Lothiriel Silmarien
07-10-2002, 06:37 PM
Oh, I don't have my book with me, but I know it's one of Feanor's sons! Orome gave Huan the hound to either Celegorm or Curufin, am I right? Ok, but I better pick one...um....how about, Celegorm???
Lindolirian
07-10-2002, 06:52 PM
I forget too, and i don't feel like looking it up. Either way, you guess correctly (one way anyhow) so go!!
Lothiriel Silmarien
07-10-2002, 06:57 PM
smilies/biggrin.gif smilies/biggrin.gif Yeah, let's just assume that I was right!
Ok, what was the name of the elf maiden that traveled with Nimrodel over the mountains but was assumed to have satyed behind and married some man there. Imrahil is somehow descended from her.
Daniel Telcontar
07-11-2002, 03:06 AM
Could it be Amroth?
Lothiriel Silmarien
07-11-2002, 10:49 AM
I spelled stayed wrong smilies/mad.gif
Nope, Daniel, Amroth isn't an elf-MAIDEN! smilies/biggrin.gif (I thought that was funny though smilies/wink.gif ) You just read it wrong. What is the name of the elf-maiden that traveled with Nimrodel but stayed in someplace along the way. She was said to have married some man, but I don't think they mention his name.
Orome
07-11-2002, 01:11 PM
Nimrodel?
Lothiriel Silmarien
07-11-2002, 01:17 PM
Nope. Her companion that went with her...oh I forget her name! I'm gonna have to look it up now. Eh, forget that. You were close enough, you go!
Orome
07-11-2002, 08:13 PM
To which Elf did Beor the old swear fealty to?
Daniel Telcontar
07-12-2002, 05:13 AM
Finrod Felagund, I believe.
Orome
07-12-2002, 07:06 PM
correct as usual go
Daniel Telcontar
07-13-2002, 04:06 AM
Which king lived for a short while in Nevrast?
Lothiriel Silmarien
07-13-2002, 10:39 AM
King Turgon
Daniel Telcontar
07-14-2002, 10:01 AM
Yep, correct.
Lothiriel Silmarien
07-14-2002, 04:53 PM
It's hard to find really hard ones!
What was the name of Feanor's 5th son?
Lindolirian
07-14-2002, 08:13 PM
I know how you feel. I hafta think harder when I'm asking rather than when I'm answering.
Curufin is Feanor's 5th son.
Lothiriel Silmarien
07-14-2002, 08:46 PM
Yup, your turn smilies/biggrin.gif
Lindolirian
07-15-2002, 09:35 PM
Cool. How did the Elven-King (aka Thranduil) first learn of the death of Smaug?
Daniel Telcontar
07-16-2002, 03:02 AM
I guess his elven subjects in Esgaroth told him the tale, since they were present when Thorin set out, and maybe also present when Smaug was killed. Just a quick guess.
Lindolirian
07-16-2002, 02:06 PM
Yes it was his elven scouts.
Daniel Telcontar
07-17-2002, 08:09 AM
Alright. Who's other name was Teleporno?
Rimbaud
07-17-2002, 08:18 AM
1-800-HOT-ELF, Daniel.
I think that it was Elu Thingolo, King Thingol of Doriath.

Lothiriel Silmarien
07-17-2002, 02:31 PM
Celeborn?
Daniel Telcontar
07-22-2002, 07:27 AM
Lothiriel was right; Telep means silver, as does Celeb. Go ahead with the next.
Lothiriel Silmarien
07-27-2002, 01:37 PM
smilies/biggrin.gif Sorry to make everyone wait!
I just got home and I have so much to catch up with here, so I'll give an easy one now.
What is the name of Aragorn's son?
Lindolirian
08-02-2002, 04:00 PM
Eldarion. Geez, I was gonna leave it for someone else because it was too easy, but nobody answered.
Lothiriel Silmarien
08-02-2002, 04:04 PM
Yeah, I know it was easy! Your turn though.
Lindolirian
08-02-2002, 04:07 PM
How many days were in the Elvish year? How many "Man years" were in an Elvish year?
Lothiriel Silmarien
08-05-2002, 05:12 PM
I think the Elven year consists of 144 man years. Might be wrong. I forget how many days though.

Oh come on!!!!
NazgulNumberTen
08-05-2002, 06:04 PM
what? it's true!
Lothiriel Silmarien
08-05-2002, 07:19 PM
smilies/mad.gif smilies/mad.gif I said my answer first though!!!! We both have 50% of the answer, but I was first, I was first!!!!! lol, watch, we both get it wrong! Or just mine will be..
May I have the pleasure to ask a question?
How many people did Eol's sword kill and what did it do to the last person?
Lothiriel Silmarien
08-05-2002, 08:16 PM
It killed hundreds of people. Orcs and stuff. And Brandir. And lastly, it kills Turin. But Lindolirian's question is still up!
Lothiriel Silmarien
08-05-2002, 08:17 PM
Good question though, Eol smilies/wink.gif I wasn't that specific with my answer though.
Forgive me, as I had percieved that the previous question had been anwsered.
Lindolirian's question : my anwser will be merely a wild guess there at 367 Man years in one Elven year and infinity for the elves as they only live as long as the world exists. :P
With my question, I suppose I should have been more specific. I was asking how many people( who were specifically mentioned) and what interesting thing took place with the last person that it took life from?

Lothiriel Silmarien
08-06-2002, 10:36 AM
I will!!!!!! smilies/biggrin.gif smilies/biggrin.gif hehehe smilies/evil.gif
Ok. I don't wanna waste too much time thinking of a hard one, because then nn10 might beat me to it. So I'll just have to think of a quick one now...
How long was Thingol gone from his brothers, when he was sent as a messenger? If you don't know what I'm talking about, I apologize and just let me know.
Morgoth Bauglir
08-06-2002, 10:42 AM
7 years?
im wrong i know it
Lyra Greenleaf
03-23-2003, 06:17 AM
OK, I think by now it would be possible to ask another question? 10 days were up a LONG time ago!
Who were the Gwaith-i-Mirdain?
elven maiden Earwen
03-23-2003, 12:55 PM
the craftsmans of Erigion or hollin
Lyra Greenleaf
03-23-2003, 02:05 PM
Thats right. Your turn!
elven maiden Earwen
03-23-2003, 02:19 PM
who was named Nerwen ??
Lyra Greenleaf

Galadriel?
elven maiden Earwen
03-23-2003, 02:27 PM
correct
good job
Lyra Greenleaf
03-23-2003, 02:31 PM
OK then, next question: Who was Daeron, and who did he work for?
elven maiden Earwen
03-23-2003, 02:32 PM
Daeron was the minmsteral of Thingol and he spied on the meetings of Luthien and Beren and betrayed Luthuien because he loved her I think.???
Lyra Greenleaf
03-23-2003, 02:36 PM
Yes! You're right about who he is. I don't know about Luthien. All I know is he created runes!
Your turn
elven maiden Earwen
03-23-2003, 02:37 PM
who was Saeros??
i know easy but
Lyra Greenleaf
03-23-2003, 02:38 PM
Turin killed him, he also lived in Doriath
elven maiden Earwen
03-23-2003, 02:39 PM
and he was akin to Dearon.

03-23-2003, 02:49 PM
What was the longest Elven 'month'?
Lyra Greenleaf
03-26-2003, 02:05 PM
C'mon there's two to choose from!
Eruanna
03-26-2003, 06:11 PM
Okay, according to my books we can have Lairë or Hrívë as each had 72 days. The other Elvish months had 54 days.
Lyra Greenleaf
03-30-2003, 11:29 AM
yes, your go eruanna!

Here's my question:
To whom is the lay "Narn i Hîn Húrin" ascribed? ( Hint: he was not an Elf, but lived among them in the days of Eärendil)
Lyra Greenleaf
03-30-2003, 02:22 PM
Dirhavel?

Lyra Greenleaf
03-31-2003, 12:18 PM
OK, what is the meaning of 'Rivendell' and give three other names it has in Tolkien's works?
Eruanna
03-31-2003, 03:34 PM
The only other name that I know is Imladris which means "Deep Dale of the Cleft"...I'm very interested in the other names! smilies/smile.gif
Beren87
03-31-2003, 04:38 PM
Karningul- Westron
Imladris- Sindarin
There are two other names. Kudus to whoever can find the third, as I've been so far unsuccesful.
Lyra Greenleaf
04-02-2003, 12:47 PM
Think title, rather than actual name. I was being mean...
Sophia the Thunder Mistress
04-04-2003, 12:43 PM
the Last Homely House?
Beren87
04-04-2003, 10:32 PM
That had better not be the answer, because the Last Homely House is actually a house in Rivendell, it's not referring to the actual stronghold.
Lyra Greenleaf
04-05-2003, 10:29 AM
In that case I take it the House of Elrond won't wash Beren? Sorry! It's your go anyway!
Beren87
04-05-2003, 01:22 PM
Well...it becomes difficult, and I see this is going to be an issue for Lindil and I's project.
The "House of Elrond" can't be said to be Rivendell anymore than Minas Tirith can be said to be the "House of Denothor". See where the problem arises?
So don't be sorry, it is rather complicated.
So who's turn is it?
Lyra Greenleaf
04-06-2003, 10:30 AM
Well yours really beren, you got the only two real names!
I should have thought, because Rivendell really refers to the valley. That is what it means, after all!
Beren87
04-06-2003, 12:10 PM
The Alphabet of Fëanor included what two writing systems?
I'll give you a hint, they both begin with "T".
Eruanna
04-06-2003, 02:15 PM
There is the Tengwar, a system of 24 primary letters. There are also the Tehtar, the signs placed above vowels to express their sounds. Or is there something else, like another name for the Cirth (Runes) that begins with T ?
(I love these questions....especially if I have to hit the books smilies/smile.gif )
Lord Elessar
04-06-2003, 02:22 PM
From archaic English riven dell, meaning a deeply cut valley
As said before Imladris and Karningul
are two other names for Rivendell, the third name remains to be a mystery to me! the house of Elrond,The last homely house and the first homely house are probably incorrect ...
cheers for anyone who can find the third!!!
Beren87
04-06-2003, 02:34 PM
Your a wee bit late Lord Ellesar. smilies/wink.gif Read the above posts.
Eruanna, that is exactly what I was looking for! I didn't expect anyone to get the Tehtar that fast.
Eruanna
04-06-2003, 04:37 PM
Well, I did have to look it up. smilies/biggrin.gif
Here's another question:
What was the name of the place where Elwë and Melian met?

Nan Emloth

04-13-2003, 07:00 PM
What was one of the main reasons Sindarin was used for everday language in Beleriand?
Sophia the Thunder Mistress
04-13-2003, 08:07 PM
Hm, I can think of two:
Thingol didn't allow his people to speak Quenya, or have it spoken in Doriath, because of the Kinslaying at Alqualonde.
Also, because Sindarin was easier for the Noldor to pick up than Quenya was for the Sindar.
Beren87
04-13-2003, 08:08 PM
The second one was more of an opinion for some than anything else, but the first one was what I was looking for.
Your go Sophia!

I am an evil thread abandoner! (I just found about four... ) many apologies to all...
Next question:
When Feanor abandoned the houses of Fingolfin and Finarfin before he burned the Teleri ships, who did Maedhros mention by name as deserving to come next?

Fingorn,Aredhel ?
Annunfuiniel
06-09-2003, 02:31 PM
Nope. Other guesses? This is a plain straightforward question.
Eruanna
06-09-2003, 03:11 PM
I'm not sure about the "Hidden Hero". I do know that Elwe (Thingol) was the "Hidden king" and his brothrs were Olwe and Elmo.
Finwe
06-11-2003, 10:41 AM
Hmmm...Hidden Hero.
A Hint would be nice. Could you tell us what race he belonged to?
Annunfuiniel
06-11-2003, 11:25 AM
This is an Elvish trivia so the race concerned is Elves.
I did some searching and now I must confess that my question may not be quite accurate: 'Hidden Hero' was given as a meaning (interpretation) for one elvish name in the Encyclopedia of Arda but now it seems that it might be a misinterpretation...
Dig up your Quenya lexicons! The word 'hidden' is a correct translation. The entire name would be perhaps 'Hidden desire'[?] but if you find the first word the name should be easy to guess...and then finding the brothers' names will be no challenge.
So sorry about the mix-up! smilies/frown.gif Can't blame anyone else but myself: tsk tsk for being too lazy to devise a decent question.

Arwen Imladris
06-13-2003, 02:23 PM
Rúmil and Orophin? Haldir's brothers?
Orofaniel
06-17-2003, 11:19 AM
I think Arwen Imladris is right.
halda- means hidden
írë- means desire
so it must be his brothers, Rúmil and Orophin.
Arwen Imladris
06-17-2003, 01:46 PM
Hmmm. How about Multiple choice for a change? Well, that is what I am going to do.
Which one is NOT a division of elves?
a)Dark Elves
b)Calaquendi
c)Deep Elves
d)Grey-elves
e)Blue-elves
f)Golug
Eruanna
06-17-2003, 01:51 PM
I think it is E...the Blue Elves.
Arwen Imladris
06-17-2003, 02:21 PM
Yup, that was too easy wasn't it? I was trying to throw you with Blue elves because there are blue wizards, also with Golug, because it doesn't sound elvish, that is because it is the Orcish name for the Noldor. Your turn!
Eruanna
06-17-2003, 05:22 PM
I wasn't sure what Golug meant...but I knew that there weren't any "Blue Elves" smilies/smile.gif

Thank you, Beren, Saucepan, and everyone else who has gently nudged me toward my neglected threads in the last few days.
How many of the Eldar (*coughnottheperedhilcough*) chose mortality?
Sophia
Finwe
06-25-2003, 09:44 AM
None? Luthien was the only "full Elf" that chose mortality, and she probably fits the category of Avari.
Arwen Imladris
06-25-2003, 12:02 PM
If Finwe is wrong (ya right!)then how about 3?
Elros
Arwen
Lúthien Tinúviel
Or maybe you are also counting Elrohir & Elladan?
The Saucepan Man

Welcome to the Downs, Meneltarmacil smilies/smile.gif And welcome also to the Quiz Room.
Before posting here, it is worth reading the Quiz Room rules (http://forum.barrowdowns.com/cgi-bin/ultimatebb.cgi?ubb=get_topic&f=5&t=000386). You must answer a question correctly and have your answer confirmed as correct before you are able to ask a question.
Have a browse through the threads and try answering some of the questions. If you are right, you will then be able to ask the next one, although make sure that it is consistent with the theme of the thread.
And please have fun with the quizzes. smilies/smile.gif

Actually, Luthien is the answer I'm looking for, as Elros and Arwen are both considered half-elven. Luthien is of the Sindar, a branch of the Teleri who are Eldarin. So yes, Finwe, she's the answer, but she's not of the Avari.
Your go.
Sophia
Finwe

Ah! Excellent! (BTW, sorry about the Avari thing!)
His name was changed by his father, who tried to change his fate. It didn't work, and he burned in his father's fire.

Eruanna
06-27-2003, 03:13 PM

Yes. Correct.

What was the name of the Grey Elf who was foster-father to Tuor?
Beren87
06-30-2003, 02:19 PM
Annael, as Huor had died at Nirnaeth Arnoediad and Rian had died of grief.
Eruanna
06-30-2003, 04:19 PM
Correct, Beren. smilies/smile.gif
Orofaniel

Consciousness is not my strongpoint.
Who originally let the Teleri?
Lyra Greenleaf
07-06-2003, 04:09 PM

Beren87

Lyra Greenleaf

alquadae
07-22-2003, 04:23 PM
Shooting from the hip// The north wind
Finwe
07-22-2003, 05:21 PM
Is it the East Wind?
Sophia the Thunder Mistress
07-23-2003, 06:46 PM
It is the East Wind... Legolas mentions it to Gimli at Boromir's funeral.
Carry on Finwe.
Finwe
07-24-2003, 12:35 PM
All righty then. I suppose it had something to do with the East Wind blowing from Mordor.
Who was the Elf who was named partly after his weapon?
Lyta_Underhill
07-24-2003, 12:40 PM
Was it Beleg Cuthalion (Strongbow)?
Finwe

Yup!
Lyta_Underhill
07-24-2003, 12:48 PM
Thanks, Finwë!
Who is the only elf to ask Galadriel for a tress of her hair? (That I know of!)
Finwe
07-24-2003, 12:52 PM
Our good ol' Fe-Fe (Fëanor to all you stuffy people without a sense of humor smilies/biggrin.gif)
Lyta_Underhill
07-24-2003, 12:55 PM
Fe-Fe? Heh heh! Right right! And she refused him, too! smilies/redface.gif

What scion of a disposessed House fell in love with the same woman his grandfather did? (According to some stories)
Eruanna
07-31-2003, 06:04 PM
Would that be Celebrimbor?
It is suggested in some tales that he loved Galadriel (he made Nenya for her) but she chose Celeborn instead. Celebrimbor's Grandfather, Feanor was also said to be "a bit partial" to Galadriel, he made the Silmarils in tribute to her beautiful hair. smilies/smile.gif
Finwe
08-04-2003, 08:43 AM
Yep. Quite right!
Eruanna
08-10-2003, 10:22 AM

What was the name of Tuor's ship?
Eruanna
08-17-2003, 07:03 AM
Tuor's ship was called Eärrámë (Sea-Wing)
Lasgalen

That is correct.
Eruanna
08-18-2003, 01:54 PM
What name did Feanor give to the substance from which he made the Silmarilli?
The Saucepan Man
08-18-2003, 06:49 PM
Silima, a mysterious crystalline substance which he created himself.
Seems that he fancied himself as a bit of an alchemist, along with his many other talents. Perhaps that's why he became Arda's only exploding Elf. smilies/biggrin.gif
Eruanna
08-19-2003, 08:10 AM
What a claim to fame!
I won't be able to think of him as anything other than "The Amazing Exploding Elf", from now on smilies/biggrin.gif
And you are correct, by the way, Saucy. Please pose another question.
The Saucepan Man
08-19-2003, 02:23 PM
Thank you Eruanna. smilies/smile.gif
What was the chief object of Sauron's assault on Eregion? (I'm looking for the name of a building.)
The Saucepan Man
08-25-2003, 05:34 PM
Surely it can't be that hard. A building in Eregion?
Finwe
08-25-2003, 08:17 PM
The chief treasury of the Gwaith-i-Mirdain, in which the Rings of Power and all other things dear to the Mirdain were kept. I'm not sure if the building had a name or anything.
The Saucepan Man
08-25-2003, 09:47 PM
The House of the Mirdain it was, Finwe. Well done. smilies/smile.gif
