What did the wine of Dorwinion do to it's drinkers?

Bruce MacCulloch
02-04-2002, 10:16 PM
It put them to sleep.
See? Now I've answered one of yours! :P

Elrian
02-05-2002, 12:08 AM
It's close, the book is a bit more descriptive though.

Androndo the Thoughtfull
02-05-2002, 01:10 AM
The kings butler and the chief of the guards began to laugh merrily. Then they nodded their heads and fell asleep on the table.

is that good enough?

Elrian
02-05-2002, 04:18 AM
The answer is a few passages after that, like I said you were close.

Androndo the Thoughtfull
02-05-2002, 07:45 AM
The chief guard and the butler could be seen still happily snoring with smiles upon their faces.
The wine of Dorwinion brings deep and pleasant dreams.

That should do it...

Elrian
02-05-2002, 06:26 PM
The wine of Dorwinion brings deep and pleasant dreams.

Bruce MacCulloch

Narya
02-08-2002, 03:52 PM
Was it in The hobbit?
Well, i am just guessing, because I don´t have a copy of the book with me.
Was it Bilbo in the top of the tree in the Mirkwoodforest about the butterflys?
No, it´s wrong, isn´t it?
Maybe Beorn?
If this is all nonsence, plz forgive me, it´s late smilies/smile.gif smilies/rolleyes.gif

Bruce MacCulloch
02-08-2002, 04:51 PM
smilies/tongue.gif "String, or nothing!" shrieked Gollum, which was not quite fair - working in two guesses at once.
But, unlike Gollum, your second guess was correct. It was Beorn speaking of Gandalf and Bilbo.

Bruce MacCulloch
02-09-2002, 04:33 AM
Your turn Narya.

Narya
02-09-2002, 07:13 AM

Narya
02-09-2002, 01:42 PM

Name all that were mentioned as being present at the counsul of Elrond.

Bruce MacCulloch
02-13-2002, 05:33 AM
Gandalf, Elrond, Glorfindel, Erestor, Galdor, Legolas, Aragorn, Boromir, Gloin, Gimli, Bilbo, Frodo, Samwise. But the title of the thread is "There and Back Again", which is the subtitle to The Hobbit. Therefore it's still your turn to come up with a question from The Hobbit.

Correct Bruce. I forgot about that smilies/redface.gif Went through the books to fast.

When and where were Gandalf's suprise appearances?

Elrian
02-13-2002, 11:54 PM
When the Trolls caught the Dwarves in the woods between Bree and Rivendell.
And When the armies of the Wood Elves and Lakemen were camped out below the Lonely Mountain and Bilbo brought down the Arkenstone.

Legolas
02-14-2002, 12:17 PM
"When the Trolls caught the Dwarves in the woods between Bree and Rivendell" is right.

Additionally, Gandalf 'disappeared' and reappeared in the goblin cave to cause a great fire that sent out white sparks among all the goblins. As the Great Goblin stands dumbfounded, Glamdring appears and takes off his head. smilies/wink.gif

He actually "appeared suddenly, and stood alone, with arms uplifted between the advancing dwarves and the ranks awaiting them." This would be after Bilbo had taken Thranduil/Bard the Arkenstone, when the dwarves attack while Bard and his men are debating. Gandalf stops them just in time to see the goblins/wargs who were following Dain and his men.

I *think* these are the only occurrences.

Joy
02-14-2002, 12:54 PM
Legolas has it.

Legolas
02-14-2002, 04:21 PM
"One question at a time - and none till after supper! I haven't had a bite since breakfast."

Who said this, and what did he eat afterwards?

Bruce MacCulloch
02-14-2002, 04:35 PM
Gandalf said it in Beorn's house to Bilbo and the dwarves. Afterwards he ate two whole loaves with honey, butter and cream and washed it down with mead.

Here goes:

The Arkenstone is worth what?

Bruce MacCulloch
02-25-2002, 10:13 PM
Well, according to Bilbo, Thorin valued it "above a river of gold".

Watcher in the Water
02-25-2002, 11:26 PM
Or it could be argued that it was worth one fourteenth of the pile of treasure as Bilbo claimed.

Legolas
02-27-2002, 11:31 AM
From the first page of A Thief in the Night:

"For the Arkenstone of my father," he [Thorin] said, "is worth more than a river of gold in itself, and to me it is beyond price."

Go Bruce.

Okay:

What did some elves in TH suggest
Thorin and Company's ponies were lacking?

Firefoot
02-01-2006, 02:56 PM
Shoeing, I think?

Tuor in Gondolin
02-02-2006, 11:29 AM
Correct. Firefoot's turn.

Which troll lost a tooth?

Raynor

It was Tom :).

Well, it has been over 10 days, so I'm going to re-activate this thread, if you don't mind.

Who of the dwarves said he'd never eat apples again?

Kath
03-21-2006, 04:37 PM
I believe it was Fili.

Thinlómien
03-22-2006, 10:04 AM
You're correct. :)

Kath

Thanks :)

What was Bill's surname? (That's Bill the troll.)

Huggins!

Kath

Yup!

JennyHallu

5 members of the Fellowship in LotR are related to characters encountered in The Hobbit...

Who are they, what character in The Hobbit are they related to, and how?

Kath
03-22-2006, 02:33 PM
Frodo is related to Bilbo - nephew.
Legolas to Thranduil - son.
Gimli to Gloin - son.
Merry to Bilbo - I can't quite work it out, second cousin?
Pippin to Bilbo - second cousin (if the above is correct).

JennyHallu
03-22-2006, 02:41 PM
I forgot all the hobbits were related. (I only had Merry. Or Pippin. Just now I can't remember which one I'd thought of) So, there is one more Fellowship member related to a Hobbit character, and then I'll give you the thread.

Kath
03-22-2006, 02:42 PM
Umm, well there's Gandalf - he's in both!

JennyHallu
03-22-2006, 02:45 PM
Nope. Appearing in both stories doesn't count. The relationship I'm looking for is much less close than the others.

Kath
03-22-2006, 03:00 PM
Is it in some way familial?

JennyHallu
03-22-2006, 03:46 PM
Yup! (sorry for the delay, commute)

Kath
03-22-2006, 03:48 PM
Well there's a rather tenuous one, that Aragorn is Elrond's adopted son and Elrond of course is in The Hobbit.

JennyHallu
03-22-2006, 05:26 PM
It's Aragorn and Elrond, but more than simply adopted son...although only in Elfin terms could it be defined as a relationship...

Elros and Elrond are brothers, and Aragorn is descended from Elros. And Aragorn is (at least by the end of the book) Elrond's son-in-law...but adopted son is a very real relationship, not tenuous at all,

And the thread is yours.

Kath

Hey 4/5 is close! Thanks :)

Eldar14

Are the swords from Gondolin?

Kath

Correct Eldar!

Since more than ten days have passed, I'll ask a new question.

What instrument does Thorin play at Bilbo's house?

Taralphiel
04-22-2006, 09:24 PM
*has to double-cheher memory with a glance at the book*

A harp! :)

AragornII
04-23-2006, 07:53 AM
Yeah, you got it.

Taralphiel
04-24-2006, 03:19 AM

I hope this one isn't too easy :p

How many of Thorin & Co's ponies did Smaug confess to eating?

AragornII
04-25-2006, 07:09 PM
I would have to guess that Smaug ate... six ponies? ;)

Taralphiel

Right you are! :p

Tara :)
