What about Eonwe, Tilion, Arien, and Ilmare? (and I don't suppose Sauron counts either, that's not his real name, though he was originally from Aule's people, wasn't he?)

[ April 08, 2003: Message edited by: Sophia the Thunder Mistress ]

Beren87
04-08-2003, 05:20 AM
Sophia, I have to say something. I'm a great fool. I just saw she has the first couple and told her she was right, but she's not completely right.

It's Sophia's turn, sorry about that.

The 8 listed [named] Maiar: Ilmarë, Ossë, Eonwë, Uinen, Melian, Olorin, Arien and Tilion.

Now the Istari are not said [directly] to be Maiar, they only may be [but are presumed to be].

And Sauron was indeed one of the Maiar of Aulë, but his "Maiar name" is never given.

Sophia the Thunder Mistress

The Hither Shores is another name for Middle-Earth.

Nevrast is the name that I am looking for, but where were they?

Beren87
06-25-2003, 08:19 PM
As in the song of Earendil, the "Hither Shores" is referring to all of ME. Maybe specifically that where mortals are, but that could be said to be anywhere. It's used once in the tale of Numenor, but with more bearing placed on the actualy meaning of the word "hither" than anything else.

Ah, I bet you do mean specifically where mortals were don't you?

The Saucepan Man
06-26-2003, 06:41 AM
Nevrast means Hither Shores. So I am looking for the location of Nevrast for the final part of the answer.

elven maiden Earwen
06-26-2003, 11:36 AM
northwestern coast of Beleriand?

Beren87
06-26-2003, 02:52 PM
Wait wait, Nevrast is the "hither shore". That means something totally different from the "Hither Shores". The Hither shores is a term referring to all of ME, but specifically where men inhabit.

The Saucepan Man
06-26-2003, 06:59 PM

Lyra Greenleaf

This is probably a stupid guess, because I've been given lots of translations and none match exactly, but Elros?

(Simply because ross is rain and I can't find another Elf with that element)

Gwaihir the Windlord
07-13-2003, 02:36 AM
Nope... she was "Star-Spray" I believe.

Or 'Star-foam'. 'Wing' means both, you know smilies/smile.gif.

Elf-rain... hang on, I'd better have a look at the back of the Sil for this... hmm I can't seem to find the component of 'rain' anywhere. So I'll ask for another clue. Do you appear in UT exclusively?

Lyra Greenleaf
07-13-2003, 06:08 AM
This sindarin dictionary (http://www.jrrvf.com/%7Ehisweloke/sindar/) has rain as "ross", but I don't know how accurate it is.

El as a prefix can mean star, but it's also translated as "Elf", for example Elrohir (Elf knight).
