Lady Galadriel
03-03-2002, 09:19 AM
Why does Galadriel say, in the movie, "I pass the test! I will diminish, and go into the West, and remain Galadriel. "

Mat_Heathertoes
03-03-2002, 09:30 AM
Long story, but the upshot of it is that Galadriel was either forbidden to or refused to return to Valinor, the Uttermost West, which is Elvendom and inaccesible to mortals.
The offering of the ring by Frodo was either the ultimate temptation as Galadriel was considered to have desired dominion in Middle-Earth or her realising that she was finally weary of Middle-Earth and the ring was the final test of her willingness to stay.

Lady Galadriel

pretty much right but because she realizes that she CAN go to the gray havens

Spot on, as usual, Mr Macc. Your turn.

Bruce MacCulloch

Speaking of the Éothéod, who led the éored that rode against the Wainriders during the days of Calimehtar?

Telchar
03-04-2002, 09:22 AM
Sorry to question your question Bruce, but isn't an eored composed of 120 men? Harly enough to lead against the wainriders? I cant remember a full muster was called, and I havent got my books at hand (as I should have if I question you) smilies/smile.gif But maybe Eothed??? Still I don't suppose that that word had come into exsistence in the end of the 2nd Millenium of the 3rd Age ??? - The guys name I cant remember either - sorry!

Bruce MacCulloch
03-04-2002, 09:54 AM
The passage I am referring to uses the word èored specifically.

Telchar
03-07-2002, 04:36 AM
Finally got time to dig deeper! His name was Marhwini son of Marhari.
Bruce have lectured me smilies/smile.gif and I here takes the oppotunity to briefly enlighten others on the matter:

An éored was the name for any body of riders. Marhwini was said to have led 'a great éored' but it was not until King Folcwine of the Mark that a 'Full éored' got the fixed number of 'at least' 120 riders including the captain. The éored was at that time (some 100 years before WoTR) considered to be one 100th of a full Muster of the Mark.

What was the relative number of the forces of Gondor (Those who were at Minas Tirith at the beginning of the battle) at the Pellanor Fields? And of Mordor, including the Easterlings and Southrons, and Variags.

zifnab
03-20-2002, 10:20 AM
Dior, the Quiz and Quotes thread usually work in this manner. Whoever answers the question correctly asks the next one. We try to keep it in an order, so that the thread isnt bombarded with many questions at once. Its only been a few days, since Mirkgirl got the question right. Give her a few more, then feel free to post a question. And you are always welcomed to start a new thread. smilies/smile.gif

Here's a question for YOU Dior.

Nefwathiel Teleri
04-06-2002, 04:12 PM
WHY are you a jerk, sweetie?
WHY are you mean,
WHY are you stupid,
&
WHY do you read things not meant for you?

Who was the Son of Miriel, the first elf to die?

Dior
04-06-2002, 04:21 PM
Finwe was the first elf to die, killed by Morgoth, and he was Miriel's husband. Miriel's son was Feanor, and he killed many Teleri at the first kinslaying before he was killed by Balrogs.

Dior
04-06-2002, 04:27 PM
Oh, and I'm sorry Nefwathiel that I stumbled across that thread, I should mind my own, uh, quiz things.

Arwen Imladris
04-30-2002, 02:10 PM
O.K. I will ask.

What is written on the Ring in the black Speech?

This will be easy if you have the book, but does anyone know off the top of their head?

Lothiriel Silmarien
04-30-2002, 04:09 PM
It says:
Ash nazg durbatuluk, ash nazg gimbatul,
Ash nazg thrakatuluk agh burzum-ishi krimpatul.

Lothiriel Silmarien
04-30-2002, 04:38 PM
I'm a very impatient person, so assuming if my answer is correct, I'm gonna ask a question now, but if I'm wrong and it's someone else's turn to ask, then just ignore me and sorry smilies/smile.gif
ok, in the changing of the Arda, when Beleriand sunk and everything, there was said that only one island rose above the sea. And I'm talking about Beleriand, not Numenor.

Dior
04-30-2002, 05:34 PM
Technically that would be Tol-Morwen, but Himring also stayed above the waves.

Lothiriel Silmarien
04-30-2002, 06:26 PM
Yeah, very true. Wow, that was the first person who ever looked at one of my posts. I feel like no one looks at what I write.

Dior

I think you have to be at least a wight for anyone to listen to you, although you seem like a smart person.

Ok, list these mountain ranges in chronological order from which was made first.

The Iron Mountains
The Grey Mountains
The Mountains of the World
The Misty Mountains

Lómelindi
04-30-2002, 08:07 PM
I think it goes in this order, but forgive me if I'm wrong, I'm not that great on the geography of Middle-earth.

~ The Misty Mountains
~ The Iron Mountains
~ The Grey Mountains
~ The Mountains of the World

Gimli Son Of Gloin
04-30-2002, 09:43 PM

~Mountains of the World
~Grey Mountains
~Misty Mountains
~Iron Mountains

(I'm probably wrong)

Dior
05-01-2002, 08:44 AM
nope, neither of yours.

Arwen Imladris
05-01-2002, 02:19 PM
Yes Lothiriel Silmarien, you were right.

Lets see, there can only be so many combinations. I'll try one.

The Iron Mountains
The Grey Mountains
The Misty Mountains
The Mountains of the World

Dior
05-01-2002, 08:50 PM
Sorry, no.

Lómelindi
05-01-2002, 09:00 PM
It's process of elimination time…perhaps I should provide explanations for my choices?

~ Mountains of the World
~ Iron Mountains
~ Misty Mountains
~ Grey Mountains

(I'm just trying to get up on Tolkien 101. And you're getting a butt-kicking in zero or fourth period, whichever is the next time I see you, Dior.) smilies/redface.gif

Gimli Son Of Gloin
05-01-2002, 09:58 PM
I figured out how many combinations there can be. There are only 24. 4! That would be 1x2x3x4. ( I'm only in sixth grade and I know how to do that smilies/biggrin.gif )

Dior
05-02-2002, 08:43 AM
Anyone?

Dior

No, wait, Lómelindi was right. sorry.

Lómelindi
05-02-2002, 10:33 PM
Thank you, Dior. That means I have to come up with a question now, hrm…
All right, here you go.

Who were Rochallor and Felaróf, and in what famous events did they participate (respectively)?

Lindolirian
05-03-2002, 07:21 PM
Rochallar was the horse of Fingolfin and he was ridden by Fingolfin to Thangorodrim. Felarof was the horse of Eorl and was ridden by him in the Battle of the Fields of Celebrant.

Lómelindi
05-03-2002, 09:27 PM
You got it! You have pleased the horse-enthusaistic hobbit greatly.

Impressive, too, since Felaróf isn't even mentioned in the Silmarillion index.

You're up, Agent Elrond. smilies/wink.gif

Lindolirian
05-06-2002, 04:23 PM
What year and age did Fornost fall?

Lómelindi
05-06-2002, 07:58 PM
Fornost, capital of the Dúnedain, fell in the year 1974 in the Third Age, when the Witch-king's armies of Angmar captured it in the aptly-named Battle of Fornost.

Lindolirian
05-07-2002, 02:20 PM
Correctamundo! Your go.

Lómelindi
05-07-2002, 06:01 PM
What is the name of the legend of Túrin and his sister Nienor?

Lindolirian
05-07-2002, 06:33 PM
The Narn i Hin Hurin which mean the Tale of the Children of Hurin.

Lómelindi
05-07-2002, 06:57 PM
Hrm, perhaps I should be nitpicky and say "You forgot the accents," but I won't.
Last time I try to ask a trivia question after two hours of cramming for a history (of the real world) test…

In other words, affirmative. Your roll.

Lindolirian
05-08-2002, 02:24 PM
Hey i dont' know all the alt commands for accents! o well....

How long is a ranga?

Mat_Heathertoes

Arwen Imladris
05-20-2002, 11:56 AM
Mat-Heathertoes??

It has been more than seven days, so I will ask a question.

There were two people by the name of Boromir, who beside Boromir, the son of Denthor, carries this name?

Dior
05-20-2002, 06:27 PM
Borimir, son of Denethor I, who drove the first Uruk-Hai out of Ithilien.

Arwen Imladris
05-28-2002, 11:53 AM
O.K. no one has posted in a while so

Who did Cirdan give his ring to?

Bonus points if you can say why!

Joy
05-28-2002, 12:19 PM
Okay Dior, I guess you are part right. There were two in the line of the Stewards of Gondor. But I was looking for Boromir of Ladros. Descendant of Bëor and leader of the House of Bëor, who became the lord of Ladros in Dorthonion.

Joy
05-28-2002, 12:27 PM
Cirdan gave his ring, Narya - the Ring of Fire to Gandalf.
"He saw futher and deeoer than any other in Middle Earth, and he welcomed Mithrandir at the Grey Havens, knowing whence he came and whither he would return.
'Take this ring, Master,' he said, 'for your labours will be heavy; but it will support you in the weariness that you have taken upon yourself. FOr this is the Ring of Fire, and with it you may rekindle hearts in a world that grows chill. But as for me, my heart is with the Sea, and I will dwell by the grey shores until the last ship sails. I will await you."

Taken from Appendix B - Third Age.

Arwen Imladris
05-28-2002, 01:16 PM
