Not quite certain if this topic fits in this section, but here are those riddles I found in an rpg game. I've been thinking about it a few days now. (and i don't know the answers)
1.
I am as cold as death, and not breathing air.
Never thirsty, but ever drinking
Covered in mail, but never clinking
What am I?
2.
A warrior amongst the flowers, he bears a thrusting sword.
He uses his life to defend his golden hoard.
What is he?
3.
We capture light, and yet we don't.
We reflect rays of sun, and yet we don't.
Without us all the world is gray and dull.
What are we?
-- my guessed "sky"
4.
Until I am mesured,
I am not known.
Yet how you miss me,
When I have flown.
What am I?
5.
Never tired, never still.
Moving quietly from hill to hill.
Does not run or even walk,
life it gives and sometimes take,
when its hand is gone you feel the chill it leaves behind.
What is it?
6.
I make you weak at the worst of times,
but iI keep you safe from hights and crimes.
I make your hands sweat, and your heart grow cold,
I visit the weak, but seldom the bold.
What am I?
7.
What can run but never walks,
Has a mouth but never talks,
Has a bed but never sleeps?
What am I?
8.
White bird featherless flyin out paradise
flyin over sea and land dyin in my hand
what is it ?

What am I? Answer is Fish - this one is actually from "Riddles in the Dark" - The Hobbit
4. Until I am mesured,
I am not known.
Yet how you miss me,
When I have flown.
What am I? Answer is Time
7. What can run but never walks,
Has a mouth but never talks,
Has a bed but never sleeps?
What am I? Answer is River
These are all I know right now. I might figure out more later.

A warrior amongst the flowers, he bears a thrusting sword.
He uses his life to defend his golden hoard.
What is he?

As for number 6, I am thinking it could be Fear or Cowardice... or something similar...

oh i ran into another one here
9.
I have two arms, but fingers none.
I have two feet, but cannot run.
I carry well, but I have found I carry best with my feet OFF the ground.
What am I?

This could be terribly wrong but that last one could be a wheelbarrow... or something similar agian. Two arms to lift and push it with and two feet being the stands. and it carries stuff...

3 could be EYES, but I´m not sure.
And I think too, that five could be shadow, but 'live it gives and sometimes takes' dosen´t fit so good.

"moving quietly from hill to hill"...hmm doesn't sound like love :/ I agree with fear, time, and river...oh and fish of course smilies/smile.gif
gives life but takes it...sounded kinda like heat or sunlight moving across a cloud filled sky, would also fit the chill after it's gone
good luck with them smilies/smile.gif

Yeah, 5 can be rays of sunlight..
And for my earlier post here.. 3 sounds more than skys, I now believe, but it sounds as if there could be a better answer...
And for my earlier post here.. 3 sounds more than skys, I now believe, but it sounds as if there could be a better answer..
I don't think it would be sky. Notice that the riddle says "we." I would think that "sky" would be singular.
I was thinking raindrops, but they do not reflect light, they refract it.
Hey, what about colors??

Yes, colours sounds good, Joy. There can be dark colours that capture sunlight and lighter ones.
That´s the right answer, i think.

... and here's another one:
I am a diamond,
white and shiny stone,
you can see me,
but never alone,
you can seek me,
but will not find me nigh,
never live,
but will yet die,
what am I?
ps. I'm not sure about the nigh, but I think you see my point anyway.

Hi Manwë!
I am a diamond,
white and shiny stone,
you can see me,
but never alone,
you can seek me,
but will not find me nigh,
never live,
but will yet die,
what am I?
Is it the Moon? Can only be seen because of reflected sunlight (and Earthshine in modern times); you can look for and find it but it is 1/4 million miles away; there is no life on it, yet it will eventually collide with the Earth or be vaporized by the Sun turning to a Red Giant. (I had also considered a Star as the answer.)
Now that my subconcious has had a chance to work on it, I would say the answer is the FULL MOON. The 'never live, but will yet die' refers to waxing and waning of the moon as it goes thru its phases.

Hi again Manwë!
I'm not sure about your other riddle.
I am dangerous,
and yet can save your life,
not harmed by sword,
not wounded by knife,
I eat man and house,
but am a gift,
keep an eye on me,
for I am swift,
what am I?
But I think it might be Water. You can drown in water, floods can destroy houses, yet you need to drink it to live. It cannot be stopped by sword or knife - in fact water will rust them. Water is the source of life - a gift. Swift moving rivers are dangerous.

Yes, Maikadilwen, fire is right. But for the other, moon isn't quite right but I guess I have to give you right Lostgaeriel, star is correct. It can't be the moon because:
you can see me,
but never alone,
and here's one more:
I have many fingers,
but no hands,
I go across the world,
to foregin lands,
yet do I not walk not run not fly,
I can be short and I can be high,
in many ways i help thee,
yet do you kill me,
what am I?

And here's one more if you figured out the last one:
You carry me since the first time you met me,
but I am not heavy on your shoulder,
and not carried on the back by thee,
but can still be more burden than a boulder,
when you try to catch me I flee,
and when you run from me I hunt you,
everywhere I follow thee,
but sometimes look for me you do,
I can cause laughter and I can cause a tear,
I bring joy and fear and sorrow,
eveytime and everywhere,
I'm a thing you can not borrow,
but nothing lasts for ever and one day,
I will not be by thee,
I will go my own way,
and noone will ever find me,
what am I?

Air?
I´m not sure but that was the first thing that came to my mind.
I thought of tnis one:

but still can be more burden than a boulder
when you try to catch me I flee,
and when you run from me I hunt you,

I bring joy and fear and sorrow,
everytime and everywhere,
I´m a thing you can not borrow,
but nothing lasts for ever and one day,
I will not be by thee,
I will go my own way,
and noone will ever find me,
what am I?
hmmm.. and it could be LIVE or THOUGHTS, too...
[ March 24, 2002: Message edited by: Narya ]

03-24-2002, 02:23 PM
hmmm... I'm gonna say a shadow because "when you try to catch me I flee, and when you run from I hunt you" like a when the sun is in front of you and you chase your shadow but when it's behind you, it's like your running from it. I don't know there are some things that don't sound like a shadow but what the heck, I tried. smilies/tongue.gif

1. fish
2. a bee
3. colors
4. time
5. wind
6. fear
7. river
8. snowflake
9. wheelbarrow
looks right

and the other one, the moon?

The answer to this riddle is a memory. Everyone carries memories, and they can be a very big burden, especially if they're bad memories. When you try to remember something, a lot of times it "runs" from you, and when you try to escape a bad memory, it always comes back to haunt you. Memories can cause laughter or fear, or despair, or sorrow. And soon, when you die, the memories you have had will fade and never be found again. smilies/cool.gif

I recall Manwë replying to my post confirming Unltimatejoe had the correct answer. His post is seemingly lost forever.
Ultimatejoe's answer seems to fit the riddle. But if that's the correct answer, I'm a little put out smilies/frown.gif, because then the riddle was in fact astronomical, and I was on the right track. If the concept of time isn't astronomical (the science of heavenly bodies), I don't know what is. The study of the heavens began as a way of developing calendars for growing crops.
My answer was the moving location of the boundaries between night and day on a planet or moon. That is the location of dawn or sunrise (the answer) and dusk or sunset (its brother). Exact words are critical in answering riddles. I had the sense of the riddle but answered with a word describing location rather than one describing the time.
OK, enough of my hurt ego and the school lesson.
Play on, Ultimate Joe - I'm sure Manwë did confirm.
