Sorry I took so long, but the first person who responded was correct, so was everybody else. And
I thought that someone would have gotten it later! Well, Osgilliath is located about 50 miles or so from Minas Tirith, where Boromir held off a group of orcs shortly before he joined the fellowship. That was for some good answers! So go ahead!

Amon Sul

How else is the White Tower of Minas Tirith called? And why?

merlilot
09-29-2002, 07:44 PM
Mundburg by the people of Rohan for whatever reason...I don't know Rohirric (yet).
And Minas Anor was its original name, partly because it was the city of Anorien, and partly because it was the Western city, and the sun (anor) sets in the west.

akhtene
09-30-2002, 05:23 PM
Sorry
Mundburg's the name for Minas Tirith, but that's not what I meant.

What about it's White Tower ?

10-06-2002, 01:21 PM
I can't find the right place to look, but I'm remembering "wind"...Tower of Wind. Is that right?

edit: Oh, I found it, and "Windy Hill" was pretty close to what I said...

What is Isengard's other name? (I'm not looking for Orthanc)

Windy was pretty close indeed. It is 'Hill of the Wind' as far as I know, but I'll give that to you.

Go for it!

What was the names of the Towers of the Teeth

Aramacil
10-08-2002, 03:45 AM
My guess would be
Celebdil and .....i don't know anything else what would make sense.

Telchar
10-08-2002, 04:24 AM
Celebdil is a mountain - the towers of the teeth are two manbuildt towers - so nope...

lathspell
10-09-2002, 09:32 AM
that would be Narchost and Carchost

Telchar
10-09-2002, 09:35 AM

Childlike Empress

Dol Guldor: "Hill of Sorcery"

I named both, do I get a cookie? smilies/biggrin.gif

lathspell
10-11-2002, 03:01 AM
eeemm... I'm sorry, but you did not name them both. APart from the misspelling (which I don't regard as a mistake), it was not Dol Guldur I was looking for. Dol Guldur is the name of the Tower, but not of the hill.

Try again!

*hands CE a cookie anyway* smilies/wink.gif

What are Istari? please tell me. thanks

Childlike Empress
10-11-2002, 11:28 AM
The Istari are the Wizards, gramil

It is never named as anything but "Dol Guldor", and according to the translation thingy in the back of the Sil, "Dol Guldor" means "Hill of Sorcery"

What misspelling?

lathspell
10-11-2002, 12:07 PM
The Dol GuldOr is Dol GuldUr... that's themisspelling. And there is another name: Amon Lanc that hill is named.

There seems to be some misunderstanding or so. If that is my fault, I apologize. Please do ask the next question, Childlike Empress. Let us go on!

greetings,
lathspell

Childlike Empress
10-11-2002, 11:10 PM
Where'd you get that name, Lathspell? I couldn't find it.

Easy one: What are the names of the two hills flanking the Falls of Rauros, in both Westron and Sindarin?

Lathspell you are correct and may proceed.

lathspell
10-16-2002, 06:49 AM
alright. Here's the next:
Where stood the three immemorial Elf-towers that were known by the Hobbits, and some of them said that they could see them sometimes?

Eruhen
10-16-2002, 10:05 AM
The Elf-towers stood upon the Tower Hills to the West of the Shire. From one of them you could see the Great Sea, and in one of the towers, the Palantir of Elendil was set which looked back over Sea to Tol Eressea.

lathspell
10-17-2002, 03:46 AM
Correct, Eruhen.

You may proceed.

Eruhen
10-17-2002, 06:22 AM
What is the name, in Quenya, of the tower which is the crowning jewel of Tirion upon Tuna (I'm too lazy to use accents), the great city of the Noldor in Eldamar?

Glingol and Bansil stand on either side of the doors - what, where, whose?

[ October 18, 2002: Message edited by: piosenniel ]

Telchar
10-18-2002, 05:08 AM
I dont know - but I have to come with some kind of guesswork - Could Glingol and Bansil be former names for Glingal and Belthil the images of the two Trees in Valinor, that Turgon wrought in Gondolin ( dont have any books at hand so I cant confirm) But my guess would then be: The Tower of Turgon in Gondolin.

I have no idea: the doors to Moria?

piosenniel
10-18-2002, 09:54 AM
Correct, Telchar! The Tower of the King, it is called.

I believe in the Silmarillion, these were images that Turgon wrought; in BoLT II they were actual saplings that were planted from the two original trees.

Your turn!

Easy one:
Where stood the 'Towers of Mist' and what were their Elvish name?

piosenniel
10-18-2002, 01:08 PM
This has me stumped - but perhaps:

Misty Mountains - Hithaeglir

I had also thought of the waters of the Misty Mountains (Loudwater River/Bruinen) that guarded the entrance to Rivendell/Imladris and rose like towers of mist.

There is also mention of towers in the mist in the poem concerning Kortirion (BoLT I)

Telchar
10-18-2002, 05:19 PM
The Misty Mountains is correct - I said it was easy smilies/smile.gif They are refered to as the Towers of Mist in SILM smilies/smile.gif please proceed

Try this - one of my favorite poems:

I know a window in a Western tower
that opens on celestial seas,
and there from wells of dark behind the stars
blows ever cold a keen unearthly breeze . . .

Its feet are washed by waves that never rest.
There silent boats go by into the West
all piled and twinkling in the dark
with orient fire in many a hoarded spark that divers won
in waters of the rumoured sun . . .

lathspell
10-19-2002, 01:48 AM
Well, I guess that should be the Grey Havens or Mithlond.

lathspell

Telchar
10-19-2002, 03:15 AM
Or maybe the Tower of Avalone?

piosenniel
10-19-2002, 12:20 PM
Here's a hint or two:

Within the tower is Idril said to sleep

The reference is in 'The Tale of Eärendel'
