View Full Version : Slain Game
Legolas
10-08-2002, 11:50 AM
A relatively easy game.
State the name of a character who is slain in Tolkien's works, and the rest of us try to think of who slayed them and if location is given, where they were slain.
I'll start with one that's not-so-hard.
Finwë
Rimbaud
10-08-2002, 12:44 PM
By Melkor, before the doors of Formenos in Valinor. Melkor stole the Silmarils at this time.
Ancalagon the Black.

Rimbaud

Drauglin was knocked off by Huan, Hound of Valinor, if I remember correctly. Another nasty dog-fight...

Indeed. Draugluin was mortally wounded, and returned to the high tower where Sauron watched. There he died at his master's feet.

And on a side note I thin Scatha the worm was killed by Fram Lord of the Northmen - who afterwards send the Worms/dragons teeth to the dwarwes as an insult .... Its still Gelmir.

The riders with tokens sent out by one of Morgoth's commanders and the heralds of Morgoth in front of Eithel Sirion. They did a really bad number on him, too!

When or where?
Legolas
10-08-2002, 07:50 PM
No, the person being slain is Azaghâl.
Glaraung is the answer, of course, given by Turambar. He needs to give me the when or where part, and then he can proceed to posing his own question.
Eruhen

Can I answer? I know the full answer. Pleeeeeeeeaaaase????????

Who caused the death of Shelob? (she dies because she couldn't do something because she was wounded too bad)
Lindolirian
12-23-2002, 07:50 PM
Gollum, because he fell in with the Ring, and then She could not flee the ruin of Barad-dûr because of the prick she received from Sam's sword.
Beren87
12-29-2002, 05:56 PM

She was raised by Ulmo in the form of a bird who flew to Earendil. She sailed with him to the Undying Lands and after her 'choice' she built a tall tower (that was most likely covered by bird-crap in short order) that she would fly from to meet Earendil and to converse/fly with the birds.
Beren87
02-04-2003, 06:00 PM
Most elegantly said smilies/wink.gif So, in other words, she commited suicide and Ulmo played the role of Dr.Kavorkian.

ohhh I didnt know he had died just yet? I mean he hasn't returned, and the world hasn't ended ... if it is the Dagor Dagorath prophesy you are refering to? In which case the prophesy tells us that Turin is his banesman killing him with his black sword.
Otherwise there are the cases where his i overcome by the Valar or wounded but Fingolfin and Thorondor.
Beren87
10-25-2003, 01:46 PM
Oh Windlord!
I'm anxious to hear the answer. I would say Turin, as Telchar did, but I wonder if that's what you emean.
Gwaihir the Windlord
10-26-2003, 02:14 AM
Turin will do, although that's uncertain ground. But the other answer was Namo, Mandos, who in Morgoth's Ring (apparently smilies/smile.gif) slays Morgoth after his being brought to Valinor; it is thus his bodyless spirit that is locked outside Arda. Go ahead Telchar.

Umbarto
NightKnight
10-26-2003, 04:23 AM
Killed in the attack on the people at the Mouth of Sirion. Umbarto = Amrod, son of Fëanor.
Telchar
10-26-2003, 06:20 AM
Yeah, but thats not what Im looking for...
Umbarto had a different end than the later caracter of Amrod.
Beren87
10-26-2003, 10:43 AM
This is a stickler..
I found a reference to Amrod's mother, Ambarussa, as Umbarto. Is that it?
Telchar
10-26-2003, 11:02 AM
Actually using Ambarussa would have been a little too tricky even for me smilies/wink.gif as that name was used for both Amrod and Amras (at the same time) I could however have used Ambarto as well as Umbarto as both names were used for amrod at the same time, and the time I was referring to. At the stage of development in JRR Tolkiens writings where the name U/Ambarto (meaning the fated) was used, the way Amrods life ended was different from that of the later history - its that ending Im looking for. Hope that clears it up.
Beren87
10-26-2003, 12:22 PM
Hmm..confusing, at first.
Well then when Feanor burned the stolen ships at Losgar, he assembled his sons on the shore and only six of them. Ambarussa told him that Ambarto had slept on his ship. Feanor realised that that ship he had burned first and they speak of how Umbarto is a fitting name. Then, an end note says that Ambarussa's name became Amros in Sindarin (not Amrod, as recorded in The Silmarillion). So..wherever The Silmarillion speaks of Amrod and Amras after the burning at Losgar, then one has to realise that only Amros was present.
So.. he was burned to death by Feanor?
Telchar
10-26-2003, 01:04 PM
Perfect. Go on....

well you said Gollum falling into Mt.Doom didn't kill him, when actually thats when he ceased too exist and his power gone, he laso died at Numenore i guess... well lost his body
Lord of Angmar

Dagor Dagorath?
Finwe
01-03-2004, 10:32 PM
Since Zigur was the name that the Numenoreans once used for Sauron, it could also mean the latter's Numenorean "identity." That body was slain during the destruction of Numenor, presumably "by" the chasm that Numenor fell into.
nobody
01-04-2004, 10:47 AM
Lord of Angmar: Yes he was killed in Dagor Dagorath, but don't you need to say who killed him?
Lord of Angmar

Yes, you do have to name the slayer, my mistake. Unfortunately, I cannot remember who his prophecized slayer would be, but I shall take a stab at it: Olorin?

fyi, he wasn't really killed, just made into a weaker spirit, since he was connected with the ring...
and when Numenore was destroyed, thats when sauron lost his first form and fled too mordor, so he was kinda killed then too, just made into a weaker spirit till his strength regained

It has already been agreed upon that Sauron never truly 'died' until he was slain in the Dagor Dagorath, and then for all intents and purposes he truly was 'dead.'

Who killed Curufinwë, and when?
Ruitha
01-30-2004, 06:01 AM
Gothmog, during the Battle Under the Stars (Dagor-nuin-Giliath, the 2nd battle in the Wars of Beleriand), after he rode ahead of his army in pursuit of Orcs.

By who and on what occasion was Elured killed?
Ruitha
02-01-2004, 11:35 AM
Oooh, that's an evil one. He was lost during the assault on Doriath by the sons of Feanor; the servants of Celegorm seized him and his brother Elurin and left them to starve in the forest. Maedhros searched for them, but they were never found.
Is that okay?

NightKnight

Okay ... how did Leod die?
Legolas
02-10-2004, 02:40 PM
From Appendix A, II: House of Eorl:
He captured a white foal and it grew quickly to a horse strong, and fair, and proud. No man could tame it. When Léod dared to mount it, it bore him away, and at last threw him, and Léod's head struck a rock, and so he died. He was then only two and forty years old, and his son a youth of sixteen.
I think everyone should note that this game is about characters who were *slain* - not those that simply died. They had to be killed by someone. Each new person states a character that was killed by another, and the answer will be the slayer and the location of the slaying, if given.
Miriel

Still some people getting away from this thread's purpose - you name a person that was the slain, then everyone tries to guess who killed them and where it happened.
There fell Celegorm by Dior's hand, and there fell Curufin, and dark Caranthir; but Dior was slain also, and Nimloth his wife, and the cruel servants of Celegorm seized his young sons and left them to starve in the forest.
So the forces of Feanor's sons killed Dior there in the Thousand Caves, but the person who did it is not named.
