What was the Gabilgathol, who was it made by, and what was it also called?
Birdland
04-14-2002, 09:40 PM
This was the Dwarf name for the city of Belegost, which was founded in the First Age. (Possibly by the Broadbeam clan of dwarves.) It was located in the Blue Mountains. Belegost meant "Great Fortress" in Elvish. It was destroyed in the War of Wrath.
Telchar
04-15-2002, 02:59 AM
Just as a side note to Birdland. Belegost was founded a long time before the 1st Age, as the dwarves of Belegost helped in the building of Menegroth. Which was build during the 3rd Age of the captivity of Melkor.
When exactly it was founded I cannot say however.
Cheers T smilies/rolleyes.gif

Well, since "Eldarin" is an umbrella term for "Elvish languages," here's both Sindarin and Quenya.
Sindarin:
Female: ending of -riel
Man (I don't know male): adan
Quenya:
Female: inya
Male: hanu, hanwa, hanuvoite

I'm reviving an old thread, oh yay! I need someplace random for this bit'o inane trivia, so here it is:
How many words long did J.R.R Tolkien estimate "The Lord of the Rings" to be?
smilies/biggrin.gif
hobbitlass
10-24-2002, 07:20 AM
"Wicked, wicked Master."
I suppose the answer would be found in the Letters book. Of which I don't have.
So I'll start counting...... smilies/biggrin.gif
Diamond18
10-25-2002, 10:34 AM
All right, all right, nice master will give the answer: 600,000. I don't know if this is how long it is, but Tolkien states that number in several of his letters to Allen & Unwin.
hobbitlass
10-25-2002, 03:06 PM
Thank you "Nice master". But I'm already at 1648 words....give me a week and I'll see how close Tolkien was himself! smilies/biggrin.gif
Beren87
10-25-2002, 03:50 PM
Hmm,
Fotr = 188,270 words
TTT =154,459 words
RotK =135,397 words
Total = 478,108 words
That includes table of contents, but not the Appendix. I got bored after the end of RotK, so if someone wants to count the words in the Appendices go right ahead.
hobbitlass
10-25-2002, 06:02 PM
Are you (BEren87) serious! You actually counted? I was playing around, but would have done it sometime.
When did you do it and how long did it take you? I am impressed.
Beren87
10-25-2002, 07:05 PM
Yah, I did. Took me about a week to finish. I did it in the middle of summer. I get bored really easy...
Diamond18
10-25-2002, 09:24 PM
I had a feeling Tolkien was over-estimating. (I would take my cap off to you, Beren87, but I'm not wearing a cap...)
I recently wrote a story that is 176,389 words long. I was proud of that, but I guess I'll have to work harder to come close to Tolkien!
