View Full Version : Name That Tune!

I just thought of this. I don't think it has been used before, but if it has I'll beg for mercy. As the title suggests, this is like the television show. (The OLD television show) A responder can ask for any number of words, and then must guess the song. Since there aren't a ton of songs, quotes are good too. I'll start with one word. And an easy song. Feel free to ask for more.

It's the Song of Lebennin.
Silver flow the streams from Celos to Erui.
In the green fields of Lebennin!
Tall grows the grass there. In the wind from the sea
The white lilies sway,
And the golden bells are shaken of mallos and alfirin
In the green fields of lebennin,
In the wind from the sea!

No one has come up with the right song yet, so I've added a couple of words:
"The wind is on the..."
It's the first line of the song. smilies/smile.gif

They don't have to be the first words, but they should be something sensible; not 'and the' or 'it is'. I don't think anyone would have done that, but I saw I needed to clarify.

Not the Lay of Leithan.
HINT: this song contains a very unusual word, and the "long version" has an even more unusual word.
Now that's an unusual choice of avatar. smilies/biggrin.gif

It is from Strider's Tale of Tinuviel
"The Leaves were long, the grass was green, the hemlock-umbels tall and fair,
And in the glade a light was seen of stars in shadow shimmering. Tinuviel was danceingg there to music of a pipe unseen, and light of stars was in her hair, and in her raiment glimmering.

04-22-2005, 06:49 AM
Cold be hand and heart and bone,
and cold be sleep under stone:
never more to wake on stony bed,
never, til the Sun fails and the Moon is dead.
In the black wind the stars shall die,
and still on gold here let them lie,
till the dark lord lifts his hand
over dead sea and withered land.
Fog on the Barrow Downs :D . Heard by Frodo.

"Gil-Galad was an elven king
Of him the harpers sadly sing
The last whose realm was fair and free
Between the mountains and the sea
His sword was long, his lance was keen
His shining helm afar was seen
The countless stars of heaven's field
Were mirrored in his silver shield
But long ago he rode away
And where he dwelleth none can say
For into darkness fell his star
In Mordor, where the shadows are"
Not sure what it's called, but it's the one that Sam sings on the way to Rivendell.

It is infinitely delightful to see this thread in play.
Sam's song as he climbs the tower of Cirith Ungol.
Though here at journey's end I lie
in darkness buried deep,
beyond all towers strong and high,
beyond all mountains steep,
above all shadows rides the Sun
and stars forever dwell:
I will not say the Day is done,
nor bid the stars farewell.

Lament for Boromir
Through Rohan over fen and field where the long grass grows,

DieZel, you were right, but you need to say the name of the song plus who sang it. it also looks like some people got used to finishing the line or putting more of the song, feel free to do that. Welcome to the downs, I hope to see you in this thread some more.

Farewell sweet earth and northern sky,
for ever blest, since here did lie
and here with lissom limbs did run
beneath the Moon, beneath the Sun
Lúthien Tinúviel
more fair than Mortal tongue can tell.
Though all to ruin fell the world
and were dissolved and backward hurled;
unmade into the old abyss
yet were its making good, for this -
the dusk, the dawn, the earth, the sea
that Lúthien for a time should be
*sniff* Beren's poem to Luthien. Beautiful :)
