Samwise Gamgee

How about a game where you name an animal in LotR, (or anything else by Tolkien, I guess) and everyone has to say which character was compared to that animal - I hope that makes sense!

I'll start with an easy one

A Dog

Arwen_princes_of_Rivendel
06-04-2003, 12:23 PM
ok. I'll Samewise. He always folows his 'master'. smilies/smile.gif

Samwise Gamgee
06-04-2003, 07:11 PM
tolkien did say that - but there was one other compared to a dog

Gil-Galad

Dancing_Hobbit
06-05-2003, 10:48 AM
gollum? i'm not sure why, but i seem to remember somthing like that...

Phervasaion

I think it might be Wormtongue as he follows Saruman around.

Samwise Gamgee
06-06-2003, 03:43 PM
Well, I don't know who goes next, but the correct answers were Sam (see the end of "Shadow of the Past") and Gollum (after frodo reprimands him)

I guess Arwen_princess_of_Rivendell is next

Well, no one's replied, so I'll start a new one.

A squirrel.

Arestevana
06-16-2003, 08:05 AM
Gollum was thought to be a black squirrel from Mirkwood by Faramir's men.

Lomadia
06-22-2003, 07:05 PM
Yes, at least twice, Faramir's men confused Gollum for a black squirrel. Sorry I took so long, Arestevana! Your turn!

Arestevana
06-23-2003, 09:04 AM
Thanks.
This is way too easy, but
A Cat.

Legolas? I think?

Arestevana
06-25-2003, 09:26 AM
Erm, not who I was thinking of, but I'm going to give it to you because I messed up. I meant Shelob, but I doubt that's what is wanted by 'Characters' so yeah, go ahead. You're probably right.

ok.

Correct!

Sophia the Thunder Mistress
07-05-2003, 07:26 AM
A worm.

Beren87
07-07-2003, 06:14 AM
Erm..Smaug? Hmm..Gollum, perhaps?

Aragost
07-11-2003, 08:29 PM
Could it be Scatha?

That's probably not it, but it was just a hunch.

Horse-Maiden of the Shire
07-11-2003, 08:35 PM
Wormtongue? Gandalf does call him a "witless worm".

Tarien Ithil
07-12-2003, 04:19 AM
Scatha. He was described as "Scatha the Worm".

Sophia the Thunder Mistress
07-13-2003, 12:10 AM
I was thinking of Grima, as I didn't really think that Worm as an alternate term for Dragon was the same as worm the animal smilies/tongue.gif. Carry on Horse Maiden.

Oh no! I'm so sorry, but I was gone for a week. And this is a total letdown, but I don't know a question here. So someone else can go at their leisure.

Dancing_Hobbit

it's been quite a while, so i hope nobody minds if i go.

a stinging fly.

Beren87
08-11-2003, 02:18 AM
Bilbo called himself that, when talking to Smaug.

Dancing_Hobbit
08-12-2003, 11:50 AM
wow, that was quick! nice job Beren, i guess i wasn't being as clever as i thought i was smilies/rolleyes.gif

Beren87
08-13-2003, 02:05 PM
This isn't really a character comparison, but something was said to be like "a hive of ants".

Cathelm
08-14-2003, 01:35 PM
When Gandalf was telling his tale at the council of Elrond he compared Buckland to "a hive of ants that had been stirred up with a stick" when he went there looking for Frodo after his escape from Isengard.

Beren87

Ah! That's the referance that I'm looking for! You're go, and welcome to the Quiz Room. smilies/smile.gif

Cathelm
08-14-2003, 04:03 PM
Woo-hoo! My first correct answer!

Alright, how about...

A Rabbit

Note: I will be gone until Sunday, but will be online soon after I get back.

Cathelm
09-01-2003, 12:52 PM
No guessed yet? Okay, I'll give a hint, though this is very easy already (to me, atleast).

Hint: It is not in the LotR.

This same reference is made many times throughout the book. I will take any.

Telwilyeil Greenleaf
09-01-2003, 01:41 PM
I connect it with Sam, because he did cook rabbit in TTT......

Cathelm
09-01-2003, 02:54 PM
Nope. Remember, it's not in the LotR.

Evisse the Blue
09-01-2003, 03:42 PM
It's Bilbo in "The Hobbit" - the trolls tell him he sort of resembles a scared rabbit, or something like that (judging by his hairy feet). I always found this funny! smilies/biggrin.gif

Cathelm
09-02-2003, 06:23 PM
That's right, Evisse! Your turn.

Evisse the Blue
09-03-2003, 06:01 AM
Ok - thanks.
Hounds
Not just any dogs. Hounds. And note the plural.

Mariska Greenleaf
09-03-2003, 07:03 AM
This refers to Aragorn, Gimli and Legolas in pursuit of the orcs that took Merry and Pippin.

Evisse the Blue
09-04-2003, 04:23 PM
T'is may well be, but I didn't have them in mind. Keep searching.
HINT: There's an exact quote where a character likens himself and the others to hounds - it's from FOTR.

Beren87
09-06-2003, 10:49 AM
Sam, Merry, and Pippin, in telling Frodo how they shall follow him if he doesn't let them go with him.

And that sentences has too many pronouns, me thinks.

Evisse the Blue
09-06-2003, 11:02 AM
Yes, that's the one I was thinking about.

Beren87
09-06-2003, 11:39 AM
Ah, righto.

Tom-cat.

Evisse the Blue
09-06-2003, 03:26 PM
legolas?

Beren87
09-06-2003, 11:11 PM
I'm afraid not.

Dancing_Hobbit
09-11-2003, 07:51 PM
Our friend Bombadillo?

Beren87
09-12-2003, 07:47 PM
Nope. It has nothing to do with nimbleness, either. smilies/wink.gif

Cathelm
09-14-2003, 12:02 PM
Think I've got it... is it the sound of Smaug snoring (or just smaug)?

Beren87
10-02-2003, 08:34 PM
That it is! Your go.

Cathelm
10-05-2003, 08:33 PM
M'kay, here we go. Try this:

Cattle

tom bombariffic
10-06-2003, 01:59 PM
Is it the people of Rohan when they have to leg it to helm's deep? One of aragorn or legolas or gimli says something about them milling around like cattle, methinks...

(by the way, if I am right and don't reply, i've probably forgotten I answered this, so PM me and I will come running!)

Bombariffic

Evisse the Blue
10-07-2003, 06:42 AM
Or maybe it's Merry and Pippin, when they were captured by orcs, and Legolas says something like: 'I can't stand the thought of this merry folk being driven like cattle.'

Cathelm
10-08-2003, 06:25 PM
You were close, Bombariffic, but Evisse had the specifics. Take it away, Blue One.

Evisse the Blue
10-11-2003, 04:04 AM
Thanks, Cate! smilies/smile.gif

Deer.

Gollum.

Evisse the Blue
10-11-2003, 04:16 AM
l, sorry, Gwaihir, I edited my post because I went back and saw the squirrel has already been done. Try answering this one!

Fyara
10-23-2003, 01:15 PM
how about an owl?

NightKnight
10-23-2003, 01:36 PM
Vána? I seem to recall something like that from Silmarillion...

Evisse the Blue
10-24-2003, 04:38 AM
NightKnight, are you answering mine or Fyara's?
I'll try answering Fyara's since it's been more than 10 days for mine. The correct answer to that was Nessa (close enough, Knight smilies/smile.gif ).
So - is it Sam, cause he was 'blinking like an owl in the daylight', in Shelob's lair, I think.

NightKnight
10-24-2003, 01:18 PM
Oh, so close. Too bad I don't have the Silmarillion... smilies/frown.gif
