Here we go: freestyle, anything you want to ask, try it, find out if you're really as Tolkienfide as you thought! I know I found out I wasn't! Here's the first one, who stated the quote that is my signature,
"'The strongest must seek a way you say? But I say: let a ploughman plough, but choose an otter for swimming, and for running light over grass and leaf, or over snow -- an Elf.'"
Maybe that's too easy...oh well!

No it was good, I just felt like quoting Bilbo from the Hobbit when he answered the first riddle.
Anyways, .... How was Elwing rescued from death?
piosenniel

Who was the Rider (also called The Hunter)?
Lindolirian
11-15-2002, 05:56 PM
I believe that would be Oromë.
Durelin
11-15-2002, 05:58 PM
The dark, mysterious mounted figure who captured Elves who strayed from Cuivienen! Oh yeh I rock!
Durelin
11-15-2002, 05:59 PM
Oh man, not again!
piosenniel
11-15-2002, 06:03 PM
He resembled Oromë, but was not him. Possibly doing this to drive a wedge of ill feeling between the Elves and the Vala.
Guess again!

That is what the rider did - he does have a name.
Durelin
11-15-2002, 06:08 PM
Oh! He was "probably Melkor"!!!!
piosenniel
11-15-2002, 06:10 PM
Excellent! I would have accepted either Melkor or 'one of his Dark servants'.
Carry on!
Durelin
11-15-2002, 06:13 PM

Who is Camlost?
Lindolirian
11-15-2002, 06:13 PM

Durelin
11-15-2002, 06:17 PM
Cool dude! Next!
piosenniel
11-15-2002, 06:18 PM
Called Camlost (Empty Hand) because he lost both the Silmaril and his right hand holding it to Carcharoth.
Lindolirian

Durelin

piosenniel

From the Sindarin root 'nóm' meaning wisdom. It was the name applied to Finrod by the Edain to whom he gave instruction when they first arrived in Beleriand.
Nómin was the name given the Eldar by the Edain after first contact.

From which group of languages did Tolkien draw inspiration for the place-names in the Breeland?
piosenniel
11-15-2002, 09:20 PM
Celtic, eh?!
Gwaihir the Windlord
11-16-2002, 03:20 AM
I'd say it was some sort of British language... perhaps English, Gaelic of some descript or Anglo-Saxon?

I just found it! poisenniel, it is Celtic:
Bree = hill
Chet = woods
Combe = small, deep valley
We should wait for confirmation from master Grendel first, though! smilies/biggrin.gif

What are the Kelvar, and who are the highest?
TolkienGurl
11-16-2002, 01:08 PM
The kevlar were all animate beings under the care of Yavanna, except the Children of Ilúvatar, Ents, and Dwarves. The eagles of Manwë were the greatest of these.

Ok.......
This one might take a little looking up to find. According to the family tree of the Baggins family in Hobbiton, in what relation was Meriadoc Brandybuck to Frodo Baggins?
(It's not that hard, but you might have to look it up if you don't know that much about the family line.)
TolkienGurl
11-16-2002, 08:54 PM
Frodo was his second cousin, I believe. I'm not very good at reading family trees so please forgive me if it is wrong!

Yes! You are right. I actually had to go look and remind myself for a sec there. But your go Tolkiengurl.

Cúdae

Yay, I was right!
Next question:
What are the names given to Maedhros by his father and by his mother? Not his parent's names, the ones they gave to him. Hint: Both are in Quenya.
Cúdae
11-19-2002, 06:23 PM
I'm handing out another hint because I think my question was a bit hard.
HINT: Maedhros' father-name means "third Finwe" and his mother name means close to the same, if not the same, as "Maedhros."
Hope it helped.
Legolas
11-19-2002, 11:14 PM
Not difficult at all.
Father-name: Nelyafinwe, 'Third Finwe'
Mother-name: Maitimo, 'Well-shaped One'
Cúdae
11-20-2002, 07:05 PM
Yes! I was a little worried that it might have been too hard, but I see that I am wrong.
Go ahead.
