Nope. Wasn't spoken to Turin, though he was there.
Pallando B.C

It was said by Mablung to Saeros after Turin made Saeros spit blood. Also he actually wasn't there. He left the hall without a word and then Mablung said that to Saeros

Yes.
I meant Turin was a part of it - he was there to see that something ailed Saeros.

Bruce MacCulloch

Russandol
01-28-2003, 12:50 PM
That was one you either knew straight away or it would've tormented you forever. Fortunately I was reading that passage only yesterday smilies/tongue.gif
It was Aragorn speaking about his 'fake' Elendilmir.
"And this also is a thing of reverence," he said, "and above my worth, forty heads have worn it before."

Yes, that was something of a wild stab in the dark. This, however, is not. It's Ereinion Gil-Galad, in a letter to Meneldur, king of Númenor. He is speaking of Aldarion and the rising shadow of Sauron in the East.
Guinevere
01-15-2004, 02:11 AM
Right! smilies/smile.gif
(btw I was thrilled when I first read UT and saw Gil-Galad's letter: at last a bit more about that legendary but mysterious character... smilies/wink.gif but unfortunately it didn't go on smilies/frown.gif )
The Squatter of Amon Rûdh
01-15-2004, 03:45 PM
Yes, Tolkien did have an annoying habit of leaving his audience hungry for more. It's nice to see a little of Gil-Galad in his own words, nonetheless.
Whose words of wisdom are these? A small oversight; but it proved fatal. Small oversights often do.

Guinevere's response: Yes, well done, Lyta!
(btw, since when are you a haunted halfling? I've only noticed it now. Somehow reminiscent of poor Frodo...)
OK! Now that I've got all that done, hopefully I haven't broken any rules! Gotta find a new UT quote! Here I go!

02-11-2004, 02:29 AM
That would be about Gandalf, and how he felt towards the "little people". The hobbits of course. Say, I always thought that a "quote" should be something someone says or thinks.
Am I right?:)
Lyta_Underhill
02-11-2004, 11:44 AM
Gee, Mariska, you've uncovered the flaw in my quote! It isn't a quote! But it is Gandalf, so the floor is yours! from Concerning Gandalf, Saruman and the Shire:
For indeed in the beginning it had no such connexion, and was due only to Gandalf's love for the Little People, unless his heart had some deep premonition beyond his waking thought. I had a strange feeling I was doing something wrong there! Thanks for pointing out something I should have seen much earlier!

Very good Evisse the Blue , your turn :)
(But is it not Ecthelion :p)

02-23-2004, 10:45 AM
So sorry. Typo.
All this day until dusk
Eorl of Rohan
02-29-2004, 07:06 AM
No idea. Please have pity on us ignorant mortals and make the quote a bit longer, please.
Evisse the Blue
02-29-2004, 08:57 AM
I'm sorry but I forgot where where that quote came from :( it's been a while...heh...amnesia
I'll give a different, longer one now:
This is no place for such joy as yours.
HerenIstarion
03-01-2004, 01:26 AM
Long sight may be safer than lurking," said Túrin. "Amon Rudh gazes far and wide. Well, Mim, I will come and see what you have to show. How long will it take us, stumbling Men, to come thither?" "<html><font color="red">All this day until dusk</font>," Mim answered.
and the next one:
One morning soon after Erendis came to Emerie she awoke to the song of birds, and there on the sill of her window were the Elven-birds that long had dwelt in her garden in Armenelos, but which she had left behind forgotten. "Sweet fools, fly away!" she said. "<font color="red">This is no place for such joy as yours.</font></html>"
Evisse the Blue
03-01-2004, 01:56 AM
Correct on all accounts! And thanks for clearing up that mess. Not remembering the first one was really getting to me.
Please continue.:)
HerenIstarion
03-01-2004, 02:30 AM
The thing happens. I for myself used to forget encrypted 'backward/another way round/quote that was not' thingies, so now I have a special file for it, where I memorize things I ask. Quite a handy practice, mostly recommended :)
next one:
I understand you a little better now
Eowyn Skywalker
03-04-2004, 04:43 PM
Um, isn't that Frodo is Gandalf in the UF? It's been so long since I read it...
<Dives for copy of book>
Heck, my mom has it. Dang.
Am I right?

HerenIstarion

Eowyn Skywalker
03-05-2004, 07:07 PM
Yay! It's my turn!!!
Hope this isn't too hard... or easy for all you Tolkien fanatics such as myself. :)
Make haste, for a hue and a cry may be raised.
Hope that's sufficiant.
-Eowyn Skywalker :)
Guinevere
03-06-2004, 02:18 PM
Túrin to Andróg , after he had slain Forweg.

Guinevere

Thank you, Eowyn! :)
Alas! If some power passes from you to a thing that you have made, then you must take a share in its hurts.
Eorl of Rohan
03-07-2004, 03:53 AM
I know that!
It was said by the Drudan as he showed his hurt foot.
Guinevere
03-20-2004, 01:36 PM

04-06-2004, 02:38 AM
Thank you.
I have much to do in haste.
Guinevere
04-07-2004, 08:19 AM
Eorl said that to Cirion, after taking the oath on the Halifirien.
"Lord Steward, I have much to do in haste. This land is now rid of enemies, but they are not destroyed at the root..."
Mariska Greenleaf
04-07-2004, 08:24 AM
Indeed!

Exactly, Mariska !
Mariska Greenleaf
04-15-2004, 09:09 AM
thanks!
I would suggest someone else asks a new one, because I'll be gone for some time.
Guinevere
04-29-2004, 01:57 PM
Well, not to let this thread disappear, I'll post a new one:"But where all lies on chance, to chance we must trust."
Guinevere
06-12-2004, 10:23 AM
Is there really no one who recognizes this? :( Are you perhaps waiting for a hint ?
Mariska Greenleaf
06-14-2004, 12:00 PM
Let's keep this thread going!
It was Turambar to Hunthor, in the search for Glaurung.
Guinevere
06-14-2004, 12:44 PM
and welcome back, Mariska! :)
Mariska Greenleaf
06-15-2004, 02:11 AM
welcome back, Mariska!
Thank you very much! It's great to be back, I really missed the Downs, I didn't expect that I would...
New quote:
no works for my hands to do
Firefoot
06-15-2004, 05:08 AM
Sador to Túrin?
Guinevere
06-17-2004, 01:27 AM
Or could it be Aldarion to his father, when he returned from a journey and found the guildhouse of the Venturers shut:
"If I am to have no welcome in Númenor and no work for my hands to do,..."
Although here it says "work" and not "works" ....
Mariska Greenleaf
06-17-2004, 01:31 AM
Oh, I'm sorry, Guinevere, you have it. It says work, not "works", I made al little mistake there...
Good job! :)
Guinevere
06-17-2004, 10:01 AM
Thank you, Mariska!
My pride has fallen
Mariska Greenleaf
07-08-2004, 03:51 AM

Mariska Greenleaf
07-09-2004, 01:25 AM

Mariska Greenleaf
08-19-2004, 03:53 AM
Correct of course! ;)
Guinevere
08-20-2004, 12:43 PM
Thanks! :) I know what you seek, though you do not name it.
Tuor of Gondolin
08-20-2004, 02:31 PM

Guinevere
08-20-2004, 03:19 PM
-That's the one, Tuor ! :) please proceed...
Tuor of Gondolin
08-20-2004, 05:01 PM
Okay.
The sun shall shine upon your path.
And translation?
Firefoot
08-20-2004, 05:46 PM
I know this one!
It was Gelmir to Tuor, and the Elvish he said it in is "Anar kaluva tielyanna."
Tuor of Gondolin
08-20-2004, 06:26 PM
Correct. Your turn.
Firefoot
08-20-2004, 06:36 PM

Firefoot
08-25-2004, 02:00 PM
Yes, indeed.
Mariska Greenleaf
09-02-2004, 08:58 AM
Yet he had just the wit to play the part that I set him.
Good luck!
Tuor of Gondolin
09-02-2004, 10:50 AM
Saruman, talking trash about Radagast.
Mariska Greenleaf
09-03-2004, 04:22 AM
Absolutely! Your go, Tuor!
Tuor of Gondolin
09-03-2004, 08:30 AM
Okay. How about this partial quote?
(The whole quote would give it away).
...we cannot dwell in the time to come, lest we lose our now for a phantom of our own design.
Guinevere
09-03-2004, 01:20 PM
Erendis to Aldarion
Tuor of Gondolin
09-03-2004, 02:56 PM
Yep. Too bad they were 5 or 6 Ages to early to see
a marriage counselor to save that relationship.
Guinevere
09-04-2004, 12:38 PM
Well, I'm not sure if that would have helped them ;)
Death is all about us.
Mariska Greenleaf

Guinevere

Carnimírië
11-02-2004, 01:28 PM
A hint perhaps?
turgon
11-02-2004, 01:41 PM
gandalf to pippin?
Guinevere
11-03-2004, 09:38 AM
No, not Gandalf to Pippin.
I had left out the two last words; the full quote is:
"I do not think that either of those things are true, my son."
Carnimírië
11-03-2004, 12:51 PM
Just a guess...Morwen to Túrin?
Guinevere
11-03-2004, 01:16 PM
Well guessed, Carnimírië! :)
But what are the things she is referring to ?
Carnimírië
11-03-2004, 01:31 PM
"Then I think that he is dead, for no one could keep him from coming back to help us, if he were alive." quoth Túrin. Morwen thinks neither of those things are true.
That part is quite sad :(
Guinevere
11-03-2004, 02:21 PM
Exactly! Please proceed!
Carnimírië
11-03-2004, 04:31 PM

Carnimírië
11-11-2004, 03:46 PM

It bites.
Guinevere

Carnimírië

Carnimírië
12-28-2004, 06:41 PM
Correct.
Tuor of Gondolin
12-28-2004, 10:15 PM
