View Full Version : Copy-Cat Quotes

Lostgaeriel
12-22-2001, 01:26 AM
Quotes in this thread are phrases uttered by more than one character - let's say in any/all the books. Identify at least 2 characters who said:
But handsome is as handsome does...

Bonus points for identifying who was spoken to and the circumstances or the book(s) and chapters.

RULE UPDATES:

1) To make it easier to find a suitable quote, find a short phrase or even a distinctive single word that's not used too many times in the book(s). Note too, that sometimes the "copied" quote is on the same page as the original. That still fits the "rules".

2) Let's keep the thread active. If it's your turn to ask, but you can't find something, please say you pass. Then someone else can ask. Let's try to keep it to one open question at a time. (Questioners: remember to give hints if we need help!)

Good idea for a thread, Lostgariel!

I know one person who says this, but I'llwait to post it until I remember the other.

Sam and the Gaffer (well, he quotes the Gaffer) annnnnnd... making a guess here - Bilbo?

Turambar
12-23-2001, 08:14 AM
Yeah Sam says it to Faramir after he (Sam) stupidly reveals that Frodo has the one ring. I can't remember when Bilbo says it.

Marileangorifurnimaluim
12-24-2001, 02:34 AM
Oh the other person was Pippin, regarding "Strider" when they were all suspicious of him - Pippin, and then later Sam (in Ithilien as said above).

Oh drat - Lostgaeriel? Lostgaeriel - ? Turambar, I think we've lost Lostgaeriel to Christmas vacation. I'd love to know if I got it right.

Yes, Marileangorifurnimaluim has answered it!

Go ahead, if you have a quote that fits. (I know there's at least one more in LOTR.)

Sorry for the delay. My holiday hiatus from the computer was longer than I expected.

Man... that's a tall order. I've been looking, getting a lot of near misses.

Turambar
12-31-2001, 09:39 AM
It's your turn Maril, but one other quote I know of that's repeated (I think anyway) is the one about "Do not meddle in the affair of wizards, etc." Having said that, I can't remember the 2d person who says it !

Legolas
01-03-2002, 12:21 AM
Hmm...well, which speaker do you remember? Gildor?

Turambar
01-03-2002, 07:22 AM
Yes Gildor said it and I belive either Frodo or Sam (or Pippin?) repeat it at some point, but I can't quite remember.

HerenIstarion
01-03-2002, 12:13 PM
There are even three persong saying this. First is Gildor (the Author), than comes Sam (quoting Gildor), and than Merry (quoting Sam as quoting Gildor - persuading Pippin not to look into the Palantir)

Lostgaeriel

Hey Maril et al! To make it easier to find a suitable quote, find a short phrase or even a distinctive single word that's not used too many times in the book(s). Note too, that sometimes the "copied" quote is on the same page as the original. That still fits the "rules". I'm finding lots of examples that way.

Elendur
01-09-2002, 09:28 PM
I wish to ask a question. Because this thread is very unique in the amount of research it would take to find such quotes, can we post our findings any time we like even out of order? I know it is Maril's turn to find a quote, but it will obviously take a good deal of time to do so. And because I have one now, and I think you will have a tough time figuring the answer out, I was wondering if I can post it immediately.

I am awaiting a response. I would not think of breaking the rules like I have done in the past. But I thought this thread should be an exception.

Turambar
01-10-2002, 05:35 AM
I agree, Elendur. In this thread the tough part is ASKING the qustion, not answering it.

Lostgaeriel
01-11-2002, 03:50 PM
Sure, let's keep the thread active. If it's your turn to ask, but you can't find something, please say you pass. Then someone else can ask. Should we try to keep it to one open question at a time? Or should we allow up to 3 open questions if we get stumped?

So go ahead Elendur. (Maril - please ask when you've got a question.)

Lostgaeriel
01-16-2002, 06:36 PM
OK, while we're waiting for Elendur and Marileangorifurnimaluim to post questions, I thought I'd ask about the "affairs of wizards" quote and post a new quote to work on.

Gildor says "Do not meddle in the affairs of wizards..." in Three is Company. And Merry says it in The Palantir - and says he is quoting Sam. But where in LOTR does Sam say this?

Try this pair:
(...) Black Riders!
(...) Black Riders?
It's surprising how rarely this comes up. (You can use the Index to find these.)

Re: Waiting for Godot

Problem with answering is you have to come up with a question. Yeeesh. This is hard.
Go on without me guys. It's a great idea but these are tough. I'm in the middle of major end of year financials at the office so I'm not going to have time to search for one.

Turambar
01-17-2002, 11:58 AM
Pippin says it when they finally meet Merry in Buckland. And Merry says it in Bree "I have seem them Frodo - Black Riders!".

Lostgaeriel
01-18-2002, 12:44 AM
Yes, Merry says in Bree "I have seem them Frodo - Black Riders!". Note that Frodo comes right back at Merry with the same. [Maybe I wasn't clear with the "(...) Black Riders!" I meant that there may or may not be other words before the phrase.]

But Pippin's comment in the house in Crickhollow is a statement, not an exclamation. He says "We were all scared. You would have been, too, if you had been chased for two days by Black Riders."

And of course Frodo asks, as the conspiracy is unmasked, "But what about the Black Riders? Would it be safe to wait one day for Gandalf?"

Check out the meeting with Gildor near Woodhall. "Black Riders!" and "Black Riders?" coming out of everyone's mouths!!!

"(...) Black Riders?" doesn't turn up again until Pippin reaches Minas Tirith.

Considering how omnipresent the Ringwraiths are, it's remarkable how infrequently they are referred to as Black Riders. Or maybe not, since they stop riding horses and start riding those flying creatures.

Your turn, Turambar.

Maybe the second time is just Pippin shouting "Faramir!Faramir!" with the people of Minas Tirith.?

Gayalondiel
02-05-2002, 09:23 AM
That's where I have it, you have the crowd shouting it THEN you have Pippin joining in with the crowd, as a main character i counted him separate. Sorry if it confused...

hmmm.. i think I have a quote.
If you don´t mind Androndo, I´ll ask it

Vilya, if you have a copy-cat quote, start another thread. In order to post a question, you must answer correctly the post before it.

Good luck Vilya and great to have you aboard the Barrow-Downs. Hope you enjoy your stay here.

is it LOTR or the Sil cuz I haven't read the Sil yet.

Joy
02-19-2002, 08:59 PM
I honestly think that it is either in LotR or the Hobbit. I remember reading it and those are the only books that I have read, except for 7 chapters of the Sil.

Gayalondiel
02-25-2002, 07:54 AM
I sort of have two, both from the hobbit, but neither is 'good gracious' standing alone.

Bilbo says 'Good Gracious me' when he recognises Gandalf at the beginning.

Gandalf says 'Good gracious heavens, no no NO NO' when Bilbo thinks Beorn is a furrier.

Good enough? smilies/smile.gif

Just to get this thread going again...

Wasn't it Sam who said Why, look Mr. Frodo! Look here! Well, if it isn't Pippin. Mr. Peregrin Took I should say, and Mr. Merry! How they have grown! Bless me! But I can see there's more tales to tell than ours. (The Field of Cormallen)

And as Éowyn of Ithilien originally answered, Farmer Maggot said Well, if it isn't Master Pippin - Mr. Peregrin Took, I should say! (A Short Cut to Mushrooms)

So, Gayalondiel, is that correct?

Gayalondiel
03-29-2002, 04:52 PM

Lostgaeriel

alaklondewen

Frodo says it twice to Gandalf in The Shadow of the Past.

It that what you're looking for?

Lostgaeriel
04-05-2002, 03:59 PM

erm, well pippin says it repeating sauron's words to him, do we count sauron as having a quote of his own?

alaklondewen
04-09-2002, 02:54 PM
You're close enough. Pippen says it twice. Once when he was still in his "trance", and the other when describing what Sauron said.

I can see it's been a while since anyone has posted on this thread, but I've just wandered in and I think I know that quote,
...was an Elven king
Sam says it once, "Gil-galad was an Elven king...", singing The Fall of Gil-galad. I think Legolas says it again when he's singing in Lothlorien "...Of old he was an Elven king..."

merlilot
06-25-2002, 11:55 AM
Yeah, you are right, but you probably need to wait for the questioner to answer you... smilies/frown.gif

Sigh. *hugs Pippin* poor guy ... in a trance and all! *hugs him again* Who else thinks Pippin needs hugs? (Like after throwing the rock down the well and everyone is so mean to him?)

Gwaihir
06-25-2002, 12:51 PM
Well, he's been gone a while... What's that rule? Wait one week? I think it's been long enough so I'm going to post the next one, hope that's ok. I've seen this quote about six times in the book and two of them are obvious, so... I'd say find three or four and then you can have a turn.

They are coming

By the way, you're right. Pippin goes through alot more than he's given credit for. Imagine the guilt after Gandalf falls...

merlilot
06-25-2002, 07:36 PM
Awwwwwwwww.....*hugs Pippin again* We know you didn't mean to be so clumsy and goofy!

Ummm, I know it was written in the Record-book (does that count?), and if I am not mistaken, Gandalf and Gimli say it immediately before the Company is attacked.

Gwaihir
06-26-2002, 04:11 AM
Right, it was in the book and that counts as a quote because Gandalf reads it out loud. Also, after he finishes reading, when they hear the drums, Legolas and Gimli repeat it (I know you said Gandalf and Gimli, but I'm pretty sure you were thinking of this). Those were the two obvious ones I was talking about, can you find any more?

merlilot
06-26-2002, 02:23 PM
Gimme a hint: were the other quotes in the same chapter?
And yes, I was thinking Legolas.

Gwaihir
06-27-2002, 06:47 AM
Well, it was said lots of times... Though as far as I know none of them were in the same chapter as the ones you found. Lets see... I can think of one or two times when they say it in The Two Towers, and at least one in Return of the King... Here's a hint, in RotK they say it in rejoice. I hope that helps.

merlilot
06-27-2002, 09:52 AM
ok, "They are coming"

Gandalf reads it from the Book of Mazarbul
Legolas says it when they hear feet coming
Orcs from Isengard taunt the Northerners, sayin "They're coming!" as all the Orcs run, with Merry and Pippin in tow.

I can't find the one in ROTK...Is this enough?

Gwaihir
06-28-2002, 07:07 AM
I guess that's enough. I seem to remember them saying it at Helm's Deep but I haven't checked on that one, so I didn't count it. They also say it in RotK when Pippin and Bergil (is that the kids name?) are watching the riders come in the chapter Minas Tirith. I think it's said again at some point, but I can't remember right now. Good job!

merlilot
06-28-2002, 10:27 AM

New copy-cat quote:

said by 3 persons, that I know of.

hobbitlass
11-17-2002, 12:59 PM
I can think of a ton of people but it is from the movie and that doesn't mean it was said in the book.
Give a hint before this cool game is dead again!

Lostgaeriel
11-18-2002, 07:10 PM
This quote is from the book The Lord of the Rings. I found it said by three different persons. It may have been said even more times. (I think the tone of the language may be some clue.)

No more hints until someone gives it a good try. I have no problem with threads lying dorment for months. A thread is not really dead unless the last question has been answered and no one has asked a new question. Six days is hardly any time for a thread to lie about. Let's wait for someone who is keen enough to take the time to look up the quotes. Open your book, Hobbitlass! smilies/wink.gif

This game is supposed to be more difficult than a regular quotes game.

P.S. I never post a quote that I have not verified from the print source.

hobbitlass
11-19-2002, 12:31 PM
You misunderstood me. I clearly remember Gandalf saying "so be it" in the movie when Frodo decides to go to Moria, but Gandalf did not say that in the book. At least not in that particular scene. That's why i brought up book/movie.
And yes I do open my books, I had been looking up a handful of other quotes and was tired when I got to this one. I usually answer with direct quotes or at least give background info.
And I commend you on your patience. I don't have much. And if you dont believe me than you can go to quiz room, one thing in common page 6 and see how I really messed that up for myself smilies/biggrin.gif .
I do intend to have a go with this one. I love challenges. Unless someone beats me to it. So no hard feelings I hope smilies/smile.gif .

Lostgaeriel
11-23-2002, 08:30 PM
Sorry about my previous reply, hobbitlass. I misunderstood your meaning completely.

I would give you a hint, but I can't think of a hint that won't just give the answer away. Wait! This isn't much help, maybe, but there's no need to look in The Two Towers for any of the 3 instances of the quote:
So be it

hobbitlass
11-24-2002, 07:21 AM
Actually, that helps much because that's where I've been looking. And I still am. Remember, I never said I was quick in finding answers though! Let us not be hasty. smilies/biggrin.gif Thank you for the clue.

hobbitlass
11-24-2002, 08:21 AM
Yes! Yes! Yes! I finally found them, at least two of them. Here goes...
"...Ghan-buri-Ghan will not lead you into trap. He will go himself with father of Horse-men, and if he leads you wrong, you will kill him."
"So be it!" said Theoden.
AND
Boromir looked at them doubtfully, but he bowed his head. "So be it", he said. "Then in Gondor we must trust to such weapons as we have."

Ooh! hobbitlass! You found one I didn't recall - BONUS MARKS for Théoden. For that I give you the victory.

If you want to add to your fame & glory, there are two (or more?) to go. The two I'm thinking of are together and they're related smilies/wink.gif to your second quote.

Well, hobbitlass, to save you rifling through the book - the other 2 instances I found were Denethor & Faramir as the Captain of Ithilien reported to the Steward of Gondor in The Siege of Gondor.

It has almost been a full month, so I suppose a hint should be given.

Person #2 said it to person #1 as a reply to what person #1 said.
Then person #1 kind of repeats the dialogue at person #2's gravesite.

Or you can read copy-cat of copy-cat because this had already been done. smilies/frown.gif It's hard coming up with one and then having two threads going. Oh well. Did not mean to be a copy-cat ijn that way smilies/biggrin.gif

I shall pick this thread up again if you don't mind Hobbitlass smilies/biggrin.gif

There is another instance of that quote in ROTK ...

Boromir it was that drove the enemy at last back from this western shore, and we hold still the near half of Osgiliath. For a little while. But we await now a new onslaught there.

Beregond to Pippin in the embrasure of the sixth circle of Minas Tirith

And of course the two you were referring to:

'As a father you shall be to me,' said Merry.
'For a little while,' said Theoden

&

'Théoden King, Théoden King! Farewell! As a father you were to me. for a little while. Farewell!'

I am sure there are quite probably others that I've overlooked .. it's a common enough phrase .. I wanted to revive this thread as copy-cats are good at making you flick through your books again !

Agh .. what did I do ... a madness took me, but it has passed ... come baaaaack !!!

Hmm .. this is a torment chasing up for these things .. right, here's mine

This is just for LOTR and I've found it twice and if there are more instances, I'll stand corrected ....

Time is short.

First time:

"I have stayed already to long," answered Gandalf "time is short. but if there were a year to spend, I would not tell you all."

second time was Gandalf again:

"On Shadowfax! We must hasten. Time is short. see! the beacons of Gondor are alight"

Ta da!

I think that's Aragorn to Gili and Legolas when deciding whether to keep up the chase or take a break during the night. I don't recall any different occasion, though. Gandalf in Moria when deciding which way to go, perhaps?
