View Full Version : Synonymical quotes

LePetitChoux

This is kind of splicing the Backwards Quotes with the Antonym/Synonym fill in the blanks.

Here, you must find a quote, such as
"One thief deserves another"
and replace all the words with synonyms. So, the above quote becomes
"A single robber is worthy of a different one"
And everyone has to find the quote and the speaker!
Easy! smilies/biggrin.gif

LePetitChoux
12-26-2002, 05:42 AM
OK, I'll do one:

"A single sick rotation is worthy of a diferent one"

Now, after the example quote, this should be plain obvious! smilies/smile.gif

LePetitChoux

Nobody? Or is this a bad idea? smilies/frown.gif

Eärendil
12-28-2002, 01:12 PM
I know which one it is, but not who said it.

"One ill turn deserves another."

LePetitChoux
12-29-2002, 10:02 AM
Same person as before-Saruman. You do one now. smilies/smile.gif

Eärendil

Okay, I found this very difficult, and didn´t come up with a good one, but here it goes:
Inside a tiny moment I will take the path.
It´s in ROTK.

LePetitChoux
01-01-2003, 06:40 AM
In one small second I shall receive the way.

No idea. That was just a guess. Are any of the words I got right? smilies/smile.gif

Eärendil
01-01-2003, 08:37 AM
You got a few words right (in and shall...I think), but you´re still not there. Try again. smilies/smile.gif

This game's very hard. Is there another clue we could have that wouldn't totally give it away?

Eärendil
01-07-2003, 04:30 AM
I know it´s hard. Though, it´s not because of the game itself, but because I am crap at finding synonymical words! smilies/tongue.gif
I will give a clue that will make it much easier; it´s in one of the Rohan chapters in ROTK.

Orodoliel
01-07-2003, 01:37 PM
Is it:

'In a little while I shall take the road.'--Theoden talking to Merry, telling him he shall be left behind. --The Muster of Rohan

??

Eärendil
01-08-2003, 10:48 AM
Phew, someone could understand my translation... smilies/wink.gif
Of course it is. smilies/smile.gif The floor is yours. *bows*

Orodoliel
01-08-2003, 12:11 PM
Here's the next Quote:

'You should go with stealth, and you should go in a short while,'

Have a guess!

"You must leave quietly and you must leave soon."~Gandalf, FotR

You are correct!

Go ahead when ready...

LePetitChoux

"They shall not spoil you - if I do not ask them to. At this place, Hold! Tooth! Ankle!" he weeped. "Ankle, Warg!"

Eärendil
01-09-2003, 11:26 AM
That would be Farmer Maggot to Frodo:
"They won´t harm you - not unless I tell 'em to. Here, Grip! Fang! Heel!" he cried. "Heel, Wolf!"

ElentariGreenleaf
01-09-2003, 04:08 PM
WOO! THIS IS SUCH A COOL THREAD! I'll try on the next one. I'm sure you're right you see!

LePetitChoux

Yep, go ahead! http://www.smilies.nl/dieren/grommit.gif

Eärendil
01-15-2003, 10:44 AM
The advice appears positive to myself presently.
Thanks to my boyfriend who helped me with this one... smilies/biggrin.gif
I´ll give a clue if it´s too hard.

LePetitChoux
01-15-2003, 01:57 PM
"Your counsel seems good to me now"?
It sounds like either Gandalf to Saruman or vice versa, or Frodo to Boromir.
Or Bilbo to Gandalf.
Or...I'll shut up now.

Eärendil
01-16-2003, 10:54 AM
The quote seems correct, or just about (don´t remember, will look it up), but the persons are wrong.

Eärendil
01-28-2003, 11:09 AM
"The counsel seems good to me now" is the quote. Care to guess who said it?

Eärendil
01-30-2003, 11:41 AM
Um... smilies/frown.gif Anyone?

Diamond18
01-31-2003, 12:28 AM
Aragorn to Gandalf?

Eärendil
01-31-2003, 03:55 AM
No, not Aragorn. The Gandalf part is correct though.
Just for your notice, I won´t be on this weekend (no computer), so if you guess and know you are right, just continue. If you are not sure, wait till Monday.

Eärendil
02-27-2003, 03:50 AM
Anyone out there that is interested in this thread? Would be a shame if it died out completely.
Anyone can post a quote now, as I don´t care about my quote anymore....It was Théoden to Gandalf btw.

Annunfuiniel
02-27-2003, 05:41 AM
I shall try one!

"...provided that it rose a bit more up from the soil."

Hope a got it right, it's really hard to find those synonyms! smilies/smile.gif

Rochelle
02-27-2003, 02:17 PM
Isn't this Eomer to Gimli?

I think the correct quote is:

if it stood but a little higher from the ground.

??

Annunfuiniel
02-27-2003, 05:18 PM
My congrats, Rochelle! Please, carry on. smilies/smile.gif

Steadfast employee, still chieftain's undoing

Solve this and complete the quote with the next line!

Arvedui III
02-27-2003, 07:35 PM
Ohh I know this one!
"Faithful servent yet master's bane"
Talking about Snowmane

Rochelle
02-27-2003, 08:09 PM
Yep!

Faithful servant, yet master's bane
Lightfoot's foal, swift Snowmane

Poor horsie killed Theoden King smilies/rolleyes.gif

*lol* You're go!

Arvedui III
02-27-2003, 08:19 PM
Um, ok then. I'll try it.

However, no idiot commaned the attack

Eärendil
03-13-2003, 04:52 AM
...A clue perhaps? smilies/smile.gif

HerenIstarion
03-13-2003, 05:49 AM
May it refer to NN1?

It was no brigand or orc-chieftain that ordered the assault upon the Lord of Mordor’s greatest foe

Arvedui III
03-18-2003, 07:27 AM
Yep, your turn.

Sleepy Ranger
02-13-2004, 01:00 PM
Looks fun

Wait for me here, for only one may deliver the message and that is my destiny to fulfill

Easy I guess :)

Evisse the Blue
02-14-2004, 05:38 AM
Indeed. :D
Await me here; for one only may bring the message that it is my fate to bear.
Earendil to Elwing

Sleepy Ranger
02-14-2004, 07:41 AM
Yep thats it.
Please continue, Evisse.

Evisse the Blue
02-14-2004, 02:15 PM
Thanks, Sleepy! Here's an easy one, but the best I could come up with for now:You shall possess not one nor the other. Still, it isn't of my making. I only predict.

luthien-elvenprincess
03-09-2004, 07:05 AM
Could you give a big hint...maybe from what book this comes?

Evisse the Blue
03-11-2004, 02:50 AM
Sure thing! It's from ROTK.

Guinevere
03-24-2004, 06:22 AM
I just discovered this challenging game. May I join in?

This must be Saruman telling Frodo:

"But do not expect me to wish you health and long life. You will have neither. But that is not my doing. I merely foretell."

Evisse the Blue
03-24-2004, 06:56 AM
Correct as always, Guinevere!

Guinevere
03-24-2004, 02:07 PM
Thank you, Evisse! :)
A lot are the curious possibilities of the earth, and aid frequently shall approach from the part of the feeble when the learned stumble.
Is this still recognizable?

Firefoot
03-24-2004, 02:53 PM
"Many are the strange chances of the world," said Mithrandir, "and help oft shall come from the hands of the weak when the wise falter."It was Gandalf at the White Council.

Guinevere
03-25-2004, 03:56 AM
I guess that quote was a bit too well known... ;) Now it's your turn to wrack your brain...

Firefoot
03-25-2004, 06:32 AM
Yet I told still my terror to nobody, realizing the danger of an ill-timed softly spoken word, if it proceeded amiss. These are hard to write! Thank you, Thesaurus!

Guinevere
03-26-2004, 02:24 PM
That must be Gandalf at the Council of Elrond:

"But I spoke yet of my dread to none, knowing the peril of an untimely whisper if it went astray."

Firefoot
03-26-2004, 02:43 PM
Yes, that's it.

Guinevere
03-28-2004, 09:43 AM
:) Thank you. But now, for a new one...

"They're not able to be victorious always!"

Oddwen
03-28-2004, 06:55 PM
Mind if I join?

That would be "They cannot conquer for ever!" by Frodo to Sam at the Crossroads.

Guinevere
03-29-2004, 12:40 PM
Your turn, Oddwen! :)

Oddwen
03-29-2004, 08:07 PM
Thank you, Guenevere. Let's try:

Substance virtually flubbed, you divulge. I reveal, substance has flubbed.

Firefoot
03-30-2004, 06:18 AM
That would be "Something nearly slipped, you say. I say, something has slipped." Gorbag to Shagrat.

Oddwen
03-30-2004, 07:31 PM
Absolutely! :D Your go.

Firefoot
03-31-2004, 06:26 AM
Thanks, Oddwen! No one will be able to dwell presently like those people have dwelt, and scarcely any will maintain the things those people name theirs.

Guinevere
04-08-2004, 03:41 AM
Finally found it: it's Aragorn speaking to Eomer (as a message to Theoden)

" None may live now as they have lived, and few shall keep what they call their own."

Firefoot
04-08-2004, 04:37 PM
Yep.

Guinevere
04-09-2004, 03:02 AM
Thank you, Firefoot .
Act like you wish in your craziness, but allow me before to dismount from this steed!"

Mariska Greenleaf
04-09-2004, 05:10 AM
Do as you please in your madness, but let me first get down from this horse!

Said Gimli to Legolas.

Evisse the Blue
04-09-2004, 05:11 AM
"Do as you please in your madness, but let me first get down from this horse!" A desperate Gimli to Legolas the tree-lover.

EDIT: Mariska, you beat me by a minute! :D

Mariska Greenleaf
04-09-2004, 05:34 AM
EDIT: Mariska, you beat me by a minute!

:p :D

Guinevere
04-09-2004, 07:40 AM
Correct, of course! :) Somehow, these are harder to compose than to find out.. ;)

Mariska Greenleaf
04-09-2004, 08:23 AM
Somehow, these are harder to compose than to find out..

Quite true, Guinevere.

I fear the aged Wood more than no matter what I ever learned : the tales concerning it are a bad dream.

Phew, not easy at all!

Evisse the Blue

"I am more afrad of the Old Forest than of anything I know about: the stories about it are a nightmare"
Fatty Bolger, A conspiracy unmasked

Mariska Greenleaf

Yep, that's it! :)

Evisse the Blue
05-22-2004, 12:51 AM
I was just about to revive this thread when, I realized - surprise, it was my turn!

"You are fortunate to exist in this location, as well, following the entire nonsensical stuff you have commited since you took leave of your native abode.'

Guinevere
05-22-2004, 09:15 AM
Ah, this is Gandalf to Frodo when he awakes in Rivendell:
"And you are lucky to be here, too, after all the absurd things you have done since you left home."

Evisse the Blue
05-23-2004, 12:52 PM
Yes, exactly!

Guinevere
05-26-2004, 02:22 PM
thank you, Evisse!
"The affection of the Quendi for their country as well as their creations is more profound than the bottom of the ocean and their sorrow is immortal and is at no time entirely to be soothed."

Mariska Greenleaf
07-06-2004, 02:38 AM
The love of the elves for their land and their works is deeper than the deeps of the Sea, and their regret is undying and cannot wholly be assuaged.

That was Galadriel talking to Frodo.

Guinevere
07-06-2004, 08:18 AM
Yes, exactly, Mariska ! :)
(I already feared that nobody was ever looking at this thread... :( )

Mariska Greenleaf
07-06-2004, 08:29 AM
"It is harder to discover men in the forests and plains, replied the hobbit, and if thou are meant to exist on the path, there might be a possibility that thou will be searched for on the path and not away from it."

Once again, this proves to be rather hard to make up...

Firefoot
07-06-2004, 11:22 AM
"It is less easy to find people in the woods and fields," answered Frodo. "And if you are supposed to be on the road, there is some chance that you will be looked for on the road and not off it." Frodo to Pippin and Sam.

Mariska Greenleaf
07-07-2004, 02:02 AM
Exactly, good job!

Firefoot
07-07-2004, 12:19 PM
"The murmur of the land is faint and muddled," said the man. "No one strides on it any where near us. Soft and distant are the steps our foes make." Go for it.

Firefoot
10-06-2004, 05:27 PM
Anyone? Need a hint?

Guinevere
10-07-2004, 08:54 AM
"The rumour of the earth is dim and confused," he said. "Nothing walks upon it for many miles about us. Faint and far are the feet of our enemies."

Aragorn to Legolas and Gimli, after pressing his ear to the earth and listening. (In "The riders of Rohan")

I guessed long ago where this quote was (without actually looking it up) but I was too lazy to compose a new one! ;)

Firefoot
10-07-2004, 01:47 PM
These are hard to come up with... much harder than the opposite quotes.

At any rate, that is correct.

Guinevere
10-13-2004, 09:48 AM
OK, I have tried to compose a new one...It is dangerous for perishable humans to leave this sunny earth and formerly not many returned from there untransformed

Oddwen
11-12-2004, 09:45 PM
And a good try it seems, Guinevere. How about a hint?

Guinevere
11-13-2004, 07:41 AM
It's in TTT. And the sentence ends with: "... 'tis said."

Firefoot
11-13-2004, 08:10 AM
I actually found this a long time ago, and then forgot about the thread... "For it is perilous for mortal man to walk out of the world of this Sun, and few of old came thence unchanged, 'tis said." Faramir talking to Frodo about Lothlorien.

Guinevere
11-13-2004, 08:16 AM
correct, as usual, Firefoot! :)

Firefoot
11-26-2004, 02:15 PM
"Yet how come we don't murder them fast, murder them immediately? They're a confounded annoyance, and we're in need of haste. Night will be here soon, and we should be leaving."Sorry for the delay.

Evisse the Blue
11-27-2004, 06:57 AM
"But why not kill them quick, kill them now? They're a cursed nuisance and we're in a hurry. Evening is coming on and we ought to get a move on."

An orc says so in "The Uruk Hai"

Firefoot
11-27-2004, 07:04 AM
Right-o!

Evisse the Blue
11-27-2004, 07:37 AM
Ok thanks.

"should it be imperative for you to leave, allow me to go after you on horseback. Because I am tired of hiding among the slopes and desire to charge forward into danger and war."

Oddwen
11-27-2004, 06:33 PM
"If you must go, then let me ride in your following. For I am weary of skulking in the hills, and wish to face peril and battle."

Eowyn said that to Aragorn in "The Passing of the Grey Company".

Evisse the Blue
11-28-2004, 04:10 AM
Yes, that's it.

Oddwen
11-28-2004, 08:33 PM
"Always my ventricles pulse as we come close to the great hills. There is favorable stone here. This place has strong structure."

Rimbaud
11-29-2004, 09:59 AM
"Ever my heart rises as we draw near the mountains. There is good rock here. This country has tough bones." - Gimli to Legolas, just prior to their friendly competition.

Oddwen
11-29-2004, 04:49 PM
Abso-bally-lutely.

Rimbaud
11-30-2004, 04:15 AM
"Yet you and I know the veracity of this, that thy dwelling is not in this place."

Evisse the Blue
02-26-2005, 07:15 AM
10 days rule...

"Because you are not lowly in your bearing, White Rider - and such a quality that you have is not without proper cause, for you posess both a keen intelect and a clear and farsighted visage."

If that is not wholly correct in terms of grammar, my apologies. Still, the meaning, I think, is clear.

Firefoot
02-26-2005, 07:32 AM
"For you are proud, Gandalf - and not without reason, having a noble mind and eyes that look both deep and far." Saruman to Gandalf.

Evisse the Blue
02-26-2005, 07:38 AM
That's right, well done, Firefoot!

Guinevere
03-11-2005, 04:34 PM
I don't know why nobody tried to solve Rimbaud's quote (post #96) ?
I think it must be from the Akallabêth, the messengers of Manwë speaking to the Númenoreans:
" But this we hold to be true, that your home is not here, neither in the land of Aman nor anywhere within the Circles of the World."

Firefoot
03-11-2005, 05:07 PM
Well, I guess it's my turn at this (though Guinevere solved the harder quote, I think...)"I despise our location, as well, and I fear. I am unaware of the cause: neither the wargs, nor the black beyond the entrance, yet of another thing."

Evisse the Blue
03-15-2005, 08:08 AM
Frodo to Boromir in front of the gates of Moria:

"I hate this place, too and I am afraid. I don't know of what: not of wolves, or the dark behind the doors, but of something else."

Firefoot
03-15-2005, 05:02 PM
Indeed. Please proceed. :)

Firefoot
04-15-2005, 09:55 PM
*Bump* Evisse?

Evisse the Blue
04-17-2005, 11:37 AM
"Should my ears be subjected once more to the phrase 'it is not permitted', I shall be driven into fury."

Oddwen
04-17-2005, 02:21 PM
"If I hear not allowed much oftener," said Sam, "I'm going to get angry."

That would be a quote from Sam, RotK, "The Scouring of the Shire"

Evisse the Blue
04-18-2005, 05:28 AM
Indeedy-o! :)

Oddwen
04-18-2005, 07:51 PM
"And your rough, noisy breathing would vivify a rock drake - yet we acknowledge you"

Galadriel55
11-19-2010, 03:28 PM
That's the Elves of Rivendell talking to Bilbo when they woke him up in the middle of the night with their singing. I don't have TH with me though, so I can't find the exact quote.
