RiderOfRohan
05-03-2003, 06:09 PM
Here will be quotes from Chapter 1: An Unexpected Party through Chapter 19: The Last Stage of The Hobbit. We will do 4 quotes per chapter. I'll start us off at Chapter 1 with an easy quote.

" Yes you have! Twice now. My pardon. ive it to you. In fact I will go so far so to send you on this adventure. Very amusing for me, very good for you- and profitable too, very likely, if you ever get over."

Beren87
05-04-2003, 05:16 PM
Gandalf to Bilbo, at the door of Bag End. [well, more at the porch, as Bilbo was outside]

RiderOfRohan
05-05-2003, 05:14 AM
Correct. Now your turn.

Beren87
05-05-2003, 04:18 PM
Also [of course] from Chapter One.

Why don't they come and lend a hand?

Eressië Ailin
05-05-2003, 09:35 PM
Thaat would be Bilbo, mainly to himself, as he was getting the food ready and setting the table for the Dwaves and Gandalf.

Beren87
05-06-2003, 07:04 PM
Correct as usual Madame Ailin!

Eressië Ailin
05-07-2003, 04:11 PM
Why, thank you! smilies/smile.gif

Here is a rather simple (and short) one:

'What do you mean?'

Beren87
05-07-2003, 04:16 PM
Ah, quite a famous line. It was Gandalf to Bilbo on the front step of Bag End inquiring what Bilbo meant by "Good Morning".

Eressië Ailin
05-07-2003, 04:23 PM
Of course, you are right. I don't have my book right now, and that's all I could think of.

Beren87
05-07-2003, 05:05 PM
Allright then, last one from this chapter.

Your grandfather

Eressië Ailin
05-07-2003, 09:56 PM
Gandalf to Thorin, referring to Thor.

"This was made by Thror, your grandfather, Thorin," he said in answer to the dwarves' excited questions. "It is a plan of the Mountain."

And that is about the map.

Beren87
05-08-2003, 05:58 PM
Nope. smilies/biggrin.gif

My quotes appear with that exact capitalization.

Eressië Ailin
05-08-2003, 07:17 PM
Well, 'Your grandfather,' appears three times in the first chapter, each time said by Gandalf to Thorin referring to Thor.

Is it this one:

"Your grandfather Thror was killed, you remember, in the mines of Moria by Azog the Goblin -"

Or this one:

"Your grandfather," said the wizard slowly and grimly, "gave the map to his son for safety before he went to the mines of Moria."

I'm assuming it's the second one. Am I correct?

[ May 08, 2003: Message edited by: Eressië Ailin ]

Beren87
05-08-2003, 07:39 PM
I would have accepted either one. Good job!

Eressië Ailin
05-09-2003, 07:23 PM
Yay! So, I'm suppsed to do a quote from the second chapter now, right?

[ May 09, 2003: Message edited by: Eressië Ailin ]

Beren87
05-10-2003, 12:24 PM
That was the 4th quote, so yes you are.

Eressië Ailin
05-15-2003, 09:34 PM
I'm so sorry I've been gone! Finals... Next quote:

Off you go!

Tinuviel Took
05-16-2003, 08:26 AM
Gandalf to Bilbo after Bilbo reads Thorin's note.

Eressië Ailin
05-16-2003, 02:01 PM
Correct! Go ahead!

Tinuviel Took
05-16-2003, 02:45 PM
okay dokay, then
Don't interupt!

Narduewen
05-16-2003, 08:22 PM
Gandalf said that after Bilbo asked "What's that?"

Tinuviel Took
05-17-2003, 06:12 AM
Correct Narduewen, your turn.

Narduewen
05-17-2003, 10:49 AM
Okay, here is the next quote.

" . . . from the mountains."
Have fun!

Tinuviel Took
05-17-2003, 11:12 AM
That would be Gandalf to Bilbo and the dwarfs near the end of the chapter about the trolls and the elves that had warned him about them. It was they who told me that three of them had come down from the mountains

Narduewen
05-17-2003, 11:17 AM
That wasn't the quote I was thinking of, and my quote ends in a period too.

Tinuviel Took
05-17-2003, 11:47 AM
That one was supposed to as well, but I failed to put one in for some mysterious reason withheld even from myself.

How about, You've et a village and a half between yer, since we came down from the mountain said by William the troll.

Narduewen
05-17-2003, 11:31 PM
Correct Tinuviel. Your go.

Tinuviel Took
05-18-2003, 12:26 PM
What is it?

Narduewen
05-22-2003, 03:17 PM
Bert and Tom said it to William the troll after he had caught Bilbo.

kimli
05-22-2003, 06:56 PM
Greetings! May I? "It was a sharp struggle, but worth it,"

kimli
05-22-2003, 07:02 PM
Pardon me Tinuviel Took and Narduewen, I posted before you had a chance to respond. So sorry!

Beren87
05-22-2003, 07:52 PM

Beren

Tinuviel Took
05-27-2003, 06:02 AM
Correct, Narduewen. Sorry it took me so long to respond. I forgot about this thread. smilies/biggrin.gif Shame and dishonor!

Narduewen
05-27-2003, 05:21 PM
Thank you Tinuviel! I believe I have to post a quote from the next chapter if my counting is right.
"They will be harvesting and blackberrying . . ."

Beren87
06-01-2003, 11:56 AM
Ah, twas Bilbo of course (speaking to, as usual, himself).

Narduewen
06-01-2003, 05:18 PM
Correct Beren! It is now your turn to post a quote.

Beren87
06-01-2003, 06:35 PM
And I believe we're still on Chapter 4.

This won't do at all!

Narduewen
06-01-2003, 08:32 PM
That would be Thorin complaining about getting wet on the side of the mountain.

Beren87
06-02-2003, 05:30 PM
Yep, he's such a prissy-rich-dwarf. smilies/wink.gif

Narduewen
06-02-2003, 08:12 PM
Thank you Beren! Here's the next quote.

"... I'll warrant!"

Elentarimir
06-03-2003, 04:51 AM
I'm thinking that's somewhere along the lines of Bilbo thinking to himself?

Narduewen
06-03-2003, 03:17 PM
No Elentarimir, it is not Bilbo talking to himself.

gilraën
06-03-2003, 03:36 PM
The Great Goblin about the dwarves.

'Up to no good, I'll warrant! Spying on the private business of my people, I guess! Thieves, I shouldn't be surprised to learn! Murderers and friends of Elves, not unlikely! Come! What have you got to say?'

Narduewen
06-03-2003, 05:52 PM
Correct gilraën! your go.

gilraën
06-04-2003, 04:53 PM
Thanks smilies/smile.gif
So a quote from Chapter 5 (Riddles in the Dark) if I'm not mistaken, correct me if I am.

1/ "Where is it?"

Narduewen
06-04-2003, 05:16 PM
A couple goblins said that after Bilbo put on the ring.

gilraën
06-05-2003, 12:46 AM
Yes, your turn smilies/smile.gif

Narduewen
06-05-2003, 07:19 AM
Here's the next quote.

"...not far enough."

Narduewen
06-13-2003, 08:56 AM
Need any hints?

Orofaniel
06-18-2003, 12:41 PM
Yes, I think we could use that...

Narduewen
06-20-2003, 08:27 AM
Okay, it was spoken before any of the riddles.

Orofaniel
06-20-2003, 08:54 AM
Is it one of the dwarves? smilies/eek.gif

Beren87
06-20-2003, 12:13 PM
Bilbo to himself, talking about the Orcs. He was very pleased at his glowing blade.

Narduewen
06-22-2003, 08:35 PM
That would be correct beren, though it was goblins and his sword still shown lightly, so he wasnt pleased at that, your go.

Beren87
06-22-2003, 08:38 PM
Heh, good point.

5.3/

, haste!

alaklondewen
06-22-2003, 09:02 PM
This is Gollum when Bilbo was taking too long on the 'Fish Riddle'.

Beren87
06-23-2003, 09:22 AM
Correct as usual Alak. Your go.

alaklondewen
06-23-2003, 04:34 PM
Why thank you, Beren.

On we go!

The Saucepan Man
06-23-2003, 06:25 PM
That'll be Bilbo talking to himself again, while lost in the dark goblin tunnels:

"Go back?" he thought. "No good at all! Go sideways? Impossible! Go forward? Only thing to do! On we go!"

alaklondewen
06-23-2003, 09:39 PM
You are quite right. Our dear Bilbo did have quite a habit of talking to himself, didn't he?

And for giving me the entire quotation, Saucepan, you get a Bozo button and a snowcone. Enjoy!

The Saucepan Man
06-24-2003, 06:34 PM
... you get a Bozo button and a snowcone

Why, thank you alak ... if I knew what they were, I'm sure that I would enjoy them. smilies/rolleyes.gif

And now we are on to Chapter VI, Out of the Frying-Pan into the Fire, I believe (how appropriate smilies/wink.gif ).

6.1/ Touch and go!

Beren87
06-24-2003, 06:51 PM
Gandalf, in recounting how he made up the "best bit of magic he could" after the Dwarves and Mr.Baggins were caught by the Goblins.

The Saucepan Man
06-24-2003, 07:02 PM
You are of course correct, Beren. smilies/smile.gif Your turn ...

Beren87
06-24-2003, 10:07 PM
You flatter me. smilies/wink.gif

6.2/

Weren't there any?

alaklondewen
06-25-2003, 09:20 AM
This was said by the general 'they', which of course were the 13 Dwarves. They are asking Bilbo about Goblin guards being present when he escaped the caves.

Beren87
06-25-2003, 12:32 PM
Correct Alak! Your turn for the third quote.

vanwalossien
11-21-2003, 09:11 AM
6.3
Who said:
You've left the burglar behind again!

The Squatter of Amon Rûdh
12-01-2003, 01:25 PM
What a great idea for a quiz. I haven't done anything to do with The Hobbit in a long while.

The speaker is Nori. Dori's excuse is "I can't be always carrying burglars on my back"

vanwalossien
12-02-2003, 03:06 AM
Finally , an answer! A correct answer as well of course, Squatter smilies/smile.gif

The Squatter of Amon Rûdh
12-02-2003, 04:05 AM
"Of course"? I've been known to be wrong, you know, on certain rare occasions. smilies/wink.gif

If I reckon this aright, this should be the last quote from chapter VI:

It isn't bird-nesting time. Also naughty little boys that play with fire get punished.

Who is the speaker, and to whom is he speaking?

The Saucepan Man
12-02-2003, 05:52 AM
Complete guess here, as I don't have my book to hand, but is it Gandalf shouting down from the tree at the Goblins?

The Squatter of Amon Rûdh
12-04-2003, 05:38 AM
Your wild guesswork has paid off, Saucepan. Your turn.

The Saucepan Man
12-04-2003, 08:39 PM
So that takes us on to Chapter VII, Queer Lodgings.

We shall see, we shall see!

vanwalossien
12-05-2003, 09:05 AM
"I've been known to be wrong, you know, on certain rare occasions" Ah, the modesty smilies/smile.gif

The new quote is Gandalf to Bilbo and Thorin's company after they'd said farewell to the eagles.

The Saucepan Man
12-07-2003, 08:27 PM
Indeed it was. Please continue, vanwalossien. smilies/smile.gif

vanwalossien
12-08-2003, 03:25 AM
7.2: Who calls it? Who knows it?

Goldberry
12-08-2003, 05:16 PM
That was Bilbo to Gandalf asking who he was talking about (Beorn) that called the Carrock by that name.

vanwalossien
12-09-2003, 01:41 AM
Correct Goldberry smilies/smile.gif

Goldberry
12-09-2003, 02:27 PM
Okay, 7.3:

I will look after that.

vanwalossien
12-12-2003, 04:28 AM
That was Gandalf, when he left the company on the edge of Mirkwood. smilies/smile.gif

Goldberry
12-12-2003, 08:28 PM
Exactly. Go ahead, vanwalossien. smilies/smile.gif

vanwalossien
12-16-2003, 01:49 AM
7.4: Get up lazybones, or there will be no breakfast left for you

Evisse the Blue
12-16-2003, 02:00 AM
Beorn says it to Bilbo.

Goldberry
12-16-2003, 02:24 PM
Actually I think it is Bofur who says it, on the first morning at Beorn's to Bilbo.

vanwalossien
12-17-2003, 10:39 AM
Goldberry's right again smilies/smile.gif

Goldberry
12-17-2003, 02:22 PM
Yay! Okay, that takes us to chapter 8, "Flies and Spiders."

You need not try

The Squatter of Amon Rûdh
12-17-2003, 03:12 PM
That'll be Thorin, son of Thrain, son of Thror, latterly King Under the Mountain, concerning the need for Bombur to describe his gastronomic dreams.

Goldberry
12-17-2003, 06:12 PM
Exactly. Very nice description. smilies/smile.gif

The Squatter of Amon Rûdh
12-18-2003, 03:05 PM
Why, thank you.
I will give you a name
Can you do the same for me, I wonder?

Goldberry
12-19-2003, 12:15 PM
Bilbo, about Sting?

The Squatter of Amon Rûdh
12-19-2003, 02:28 PM
The very fellow. Not to mention the very sword.

Goldberry
12-21-2003, 04:04 PM
8.3

Now I know!

lord_of_rohan2003
12-21-2003, 05:15 PM

lord_of_rohan2003
12-21-2003, 08:46 PM
Cool,I got something right!

"We did not attack them..."

Goldberry
12-22-2003, 10:51 AM
Thorin said that to the elven king about not attacking the elves in the forest.

lord_of_rohan2003
12-22-2003, 11:20 AM
Bingo!Or would Bilbo!be more appropiate for this type of boad smilies/smile.gif But anyway that's right.

Goldberry
12-23-2003, 09:02 PM
Ok, Chapter 9, Barrels Out of Bond:

Upon my word!

lord_of_rohan2003
12-24-2003, 02:58 AM
Is that Thorin when Bilbo came to frre him from his cell?

The Squatter of Amon Rûdh
01-14-2004, 09:04 AM
That would be Bilbo to his companions.
