I have read the Silm , more than a few times , but this passge finally came to my attention .
It is not exactly a qoute but it is attributable, to whom?

&quot;...whose power is at rest,whose joy is as an air that they breathe all their days,whose thought flows in a tide untroubled from the heights to the deeps&quot;.

'The dwindling Men of the West would often sit up late into the night, and awaken early before dawn- exchanging lore and wisdom such as they possessed , so that they should not fall back into the mean and low estate of those , who never knew or more sadly still, had indeed rebelled against the Light.' Lindil is often found on posting on the Silmarillion Canon Forum at the Barrowdowns discussion board. </p>

Re: I can't believe I never noticed this

Seems like a reference to Ilúvatar. I suppose it's too simple to attribute the quasi-quote to Manwë?

In Beleriand in those days the Elves walked, and the rivers flowed, and the stars shone, and the night-flowers gave forth their scents; and the beauty of Melian was as the noon, and the beauty of Lúthien was as the dawn in spring. In Beleriand King Thingol upon his throne was as the lords of the Maiar, whose power is at rest, whose joy is as an air that they breathe in all their days, whose thought flows in a tide untroubled from the heights to the deeps. In Beleriand still at times rode Oromë the great, passing like a wind over the mountains, and the sound of his horn came down the leagues of the starlight, and the Elves feared him for the splendour of his countenance and the great noise of the onrush of Nahar; but when the Valaróma echoed in the hills, they knew well that all evil things were fled far away.

Of The Sindar

But the attributes you quote are applied to one of the Maiar, to whom Thingol is merely compared

PS Why did you reveal your own secret in another post? :eek:

PPS Anyways, thanks. I reread half a Silm last night in search of an answer. It was great as usual :D (going to go on tonight)

...less doth yearning trouble him who knoweth many songs, or with his hands can touch the harp - his possesion is his gift of glee which God gave him...

Sorry

I revealed it the other post because I thought it was so beautiful , i didn't care!
as for the attributes being of the Maiar, yes it is true , but the tale is saying that Thingol had [due in large part to his union w. a maia] attained this state [for a while!].

Ask on.

after a delay

...for which i beg your pardon.

Let us make this thread a place not for proper, but attributable quotes. So, who was described as one who

walked among them unseen, or in form as one of them, and they did not know whence came the fair visions or the promptings of wisdom that he put into their hearts

I would guess that's a descriptoin of one of the Istari, namely Gandalf.

I'll take a risk of being thought pedantic, but I insist on being given his proper name according to the period when the attribute was applied to him (Gandalf is a given name of far more later period)

Now I have it! It was Turgon to Thorondor.

They all gazed at him. His hair was white as snow in the sunshine; and gleaming white was his robe; the eyes under his deep brows were bright, piercing as the rays of the sun; power was in his hand. Between wonder, joy, and fear they found no words to say. 'I have passed through fire and deep water, since we parted. Who spoke these lines of verse?

There hammer on the anvil smote,
There chisel clove, and graver wrote;
There forged was blade, and bound was hilt;
The delver mined, the mason build.
There beryl, pearl, and opal pale,
And metal wrought like fishes' mail,
Buckler and corslet, axe and sword,
And shining spears were laid in hoard.
