Gandalf to Denethor in Minas Tirith in the presence of Faramir and Pippin. here is the whole quote:

to Faramir (The 'thing' and 'it' is the Ring):
'Stir not the bitterness in the cup that I mixed for myself,' said Denethor. 'Have I not tasted it now many nights upon my tongue, foreboding that worse yet lay in the dregs? As now indeed I find. Would it were not so! Would that this thing had come to me!'

'Comfort yourself!' said Gandalf. 'In no case would Boromir had brought it to you. He is dead, and died well; may he sleep in peace! Yet you deceive yourself. He would have stretched out his hand to this thing, and taking it he would have fallen. He would have kept it for his own, and when he returned you would not have known your son.'

Is that enough conviction for you? smilies/biggrin.gif

? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ?

Here is the next quote:

'We must take it and chance our luck...'

Yep, I finally got it

"Then we must take the road, Mr Frodo," said Sam."We must take it and chance our luck, if there is any luck in Mordor."

Who?
Sam
Where?
Near the old castle of Durthang in Mordor
To whom?
To Frodo
What is it?
“it” is the road that comes down from the orc-tower

New quote:
Well, I'm back
Who/where?

This shouldn’t be so hard.

I must say that some of you are the hastiest quotes players I've ever seen. It's customary to post your answer and wait for the questioner to acknowledge that you are correct before you post a new question.

Of course, TolienGurl was correct and documented her answer, so you all knew she was correct. Giving context is always a good idea. It helps us all learn.

Lostgaeriel
11-27-2002, 11:58 PM
Yeah, I love that chapter, too. Seems to me that Sam is the only character inside whose mind Tolkien lets us get inside.

Sam shows his courage, loyalty, hope and resourcefulness. And his reunion with Frodo is wonderful.

We wish for no strangers in the land at this time, unless they be mighty men of arms in whose faith and help we can trust.

Lostgaeriel
11-28-2002, 11:50 PM
Gee, and I had decided not even to try this one. But with a wee bit of thought I quickly found the quote, in The Last Debate. Legolas says this as he relates the story of the journey on the Paths of the Dead to Merry and Pippin.

The clue was the word hope. Whoever was speaking had to be referring to Aragorn.

It was Merry thinking about how he was alone and had no clue where he was in all the world. They were in the fields of Rohan when he thought this. It was when the Grey Company I believe passes by and Aragorn sits Merry on the ground. I'll give you the quote from the book if you'd like. It is:

Supposing the king's small escort was trapped and overcome, but he escaped into the darkness---alone in the wile fields of Rohan with no idea where he was in all the endless miles? 'No good!' he thought.

It was Denethor, sorry if the quote was wrong. And by the way, what is the Kings of Chaos stuff about? Off topic, I know, but I would really like to know.

Beren87

Ah, Kings of Chaos is an online game where you can play as an Orc, Human, Dwarf, or Elf. You gain money by doing battle, and gain troops by having people clikc on your link. (so click on the link in my profile smilies/wink.gif )

Frodo to Sam somewhere in Mordor, which would be in the chapter "the land of Shadow"
or
Pippin in Minas Tirith (to Beregond?)chapter "The siege of Gondor".

Dondagnirion
02-02-2003, 10:36 AM
Lol, I just realized my mistake. I should have said Frodo to Sam after they had gotten away from the Orc Company that they were forced to march in, which was after they had escaped from the tower of Cirith Ungol.

Nope, It was Merry to Gimli and Legolas, after Legolas was talking about going to the Havens. Merry was wishing for the war to be over because he knew the worst was yet to come.
