This is a section where you must give the situation in which the quote of Gandalf's was said.

Re: Gandalf quotes
I'll start out with an easy one
<blockquote>Quote:<hr> "Many that live deserve death. And some that die deserve life. Can you give it to them? Then do not be too eager to deal out death in judgement. For even the very wise cannot see all ends."<hr></blockquote>

The situation was the conversation in the "Shadow of the Past" chapter, when Frodo said that he wished Gollum WAS killed.

"Ah!" "That is a very long story." was said by Gandalf to Frodo in FOTR, Book One, Chapter II, The Shadow of the Past. He had just proved to Frodo and himself that Frodo's ring was the One Ring. Frodo asked, "How, how on earth did it come to me?"
So the story is about how the Ring came to Frodo.

"That may not prove to be one of the lighter matters,"
Lostgaeriel
11-09-2001, 09:03 PM
Gandalf said this at the end of his conversation with Saruman at Orthanc, July 10, 2018.
This was Gandalf's reply to Saruman, who had said, "... until it (the Ring) is found in your despite, and the Ruler (I think Saruman had himself in mind) has time to turn to lighter matters: to devise, say, a fitting reward for the hindrance and insolence of Gandalf the Grey."
Gandalf then recounted this in answer to Galdor's question, "What of Saruman?" at the Council of Elrond.
Whew! I'm out of breath.

Welcome to the forum, jpoet!
Good job on the quote, but usually/always you're supposed to answer the most recently posted quote in a thread. Then if you're the first to get it right, you can post the next quote to be guessed. Sometimes we have to wait awhile for people to post a new quote, but if you ever have a quote or idea that just can't wait, feel free to start a new thread. Of course, reading the full thread is a good idea to keep from repeating quotes.
Hmmm...that leads to an interesting question. What will we do when we've quoted everything that Tolkien has ever written? I'm sure the end will come eventually...

HerenIstarion hasn't yet come back to confirm that Bruce MacCulloch has answered his quote correctly. When he does, it's Bruce's turn to ask. (basic Middle-Earth Fun and Games rules)
If you're really anxious to ask a Quote, just start a new thread (New Topic).

That's OK and understandable, Belegfanaion. Once someone posts a question (even when it wasn't their turn), it's a great temptation to answer it. (Did it myself recently on another quotes thread. And I think that too was an answer to a question from HerenIstarion that hadn't been confirmed. smilies/eek.gif )
Hope you're having fun on the Downs. If you (or TheBlackRider) have any (more) quotes or quiz/trivia to challenge us with, start a new topic. There are never enough games to play. It was a few days before I found one with a question pending that I could answer, when I first arrived. (I think it was this very quotes thread.)
