I promised I´d make one up, but this is all I achieved:
I call it "Quotes that weren´t", which means one gives a quote which is not in one of JRRT´s books, but could easily be there, e.g. in situations where direct speech was certainly there, but is not reported to us.
The point about making them up is that there is at least one clear hint on the speaker and the circumstances. The advantage of this game would be that a solution can only be found through logical thinking.
And, a hint should always be provided what book this quote would be in, either Silmarillion, or TLOTR (or The Hobbit).

To make clear what I mean, I´ll give some examples:

"I THOUGHT A ROSE WOULD FIT YOU WELL: I CARED MYSELF FOR ITS GROWTH; SO THAT IT WOULD ALMOST BE AS BEAUTIFUL AS YOU ARE..." (LOTR)

The problem here is the level of style, but otherwise, one can find out that it is Sam talking to Rose Cotton:
a rose fits well, a hint on the adressed person´s name; a speaker who likes or reven loves the adressed person, and who could be a gardener.

"FROM WHAT I HEAR FROM YOU, OLD FRIEND, THESE WERE TROUBLED TIMES INDEED; BUT THEY DIDN`T AFFECT ME, SAFE YOUR FRIENDS WHO PAID ME A NICE LITLLE VISIT!" (LOTR)

This one can be made easier by adding a "Ho! Ho!" or "Merry-dong-dillo" or such: Tom Bombadil talking to Gandalf after the end of the war.

But now let´s go in medias res:

Who could have said, and to whom:
"YOU ARE NOW MY GUEST. FOREVER! HAHAHA!" (from The Silmarillion)
2 possible solutions.

Re: A new kind of game (?)

Lately I have been concentrating so much on the LotR for the site, that my Silmarillion knowledge has grown a little rusty (a lot, actually). But the first thing that came to mind was that Sauron might have chuckled this line as he tossed Beren into his dungeons.

Perhaps there are more specific examples that this quote points to, but this is all I could come up with.

btw... this looks to be another clever game. I am seriously considering breaking all of these games out into their own forum here at the Barrow-Downs (A new categery, each type of game with its own forum). What fo you all think of that idea?

Re: A new kind of game (?)

Yep, Sauron and Beren are possible. The other one (I accept both) would have been Melkor to Maedhros, or Húrin as well.

And breaking the games up wouldn´t do any harm, I rather think it will - at least sooner or later -be inevitable.

(btw, I "borrowed" my quote from "Nightfall in Middle-Earth" by Blind Guardian, where Morgoth says it - sounds really cool, because the speakers in the "interludii" are experienced Shakespeare-actors from England)

Possible Quote

Not quite sure how to come up with one of these, I'll give it a shot anyways

Re: Possible Quote

Hmmm... Frodo could have said it, alluding to when he left alone from the company . Had Aragorn and the others seen him leave, they could have persuaded him to stay, and things would have gone a totally different course.
But I don´t think this solution is perfect.

I knew this one was not perfect. Focus more on the actual words of the quote and tell me if that helps. I have a clue I can throw into the quote that may help. But I'll hold off on that for now.

No... but that is a good guess. Certainly a lot of people showed up. But "Changed more than my mind" doesn't really apply to Bilbo.

I know... this one is weird...sorry...keep trying, please.

Re: Possible Quote

You know, this is somehow real fun, both to make them up, and be specific in style, words, and so on, and to solve them, where you have to interpretate every detail.

I even think that Fangorn could have said it to the Hobbits - he would have changed his mind not to help them were there too many hasty little creatures (and when he says "I" he means both Treebeard himself and the whole forest); and he himself, as the whole entity of the Forest of Fangorn, would have been changed because of more "intruders", tramnpling, or unintentionally hurting the trees.

And the quote is a good one - not too explicit, and of the kind which evokes associations in the reader. This is the essence of this game IMO.

Certainly another good guess. But still not what I was looking for. I'll give a small addition to this fictional quote and then, if that doesnt get it, I'll just answer it so you can see my warped logic

I know I shouldn´t ask two in one go, but the first is so easy, and it´s not made up but borrowed, too.

Whose words could as well have been:
"Blackheart show me / What you hold in hand / I still hunger for more / Release me / From my pain / Give it to me / How I need it..."

And who could have said
"Nay, never hast thou been a heavy burden for me, for light is the voluntary, and heavy only the fiend in battle."

I don't know that the hobbits practiced any kind of religion, though, having inheirited so much tradition from the Northern Kingdom, they probably venerated the Eldar, the Valar and Iluvatar (or whatever vague notion they still held of those icons)

The circumstances were likely those that Thrór was planning to go back to Moria. The price (the Balrog, and the orcs) was not worth the benefit (mithril).
But who might have said it?
His father, Daín I, was no longer alive, as was his brother Frór. So I guess it would have been his brother Grór (Nár wouldn´t have said something like this, after all, he did go with Thrór).

Omigosh, Nár hesitated at the door of Moria, and he tried to keep Thrór from entering this orc-dungeon, so, there he might have said it.

Indeed, and there the orcs threw to Nar Thror's severed head and a bag of were-gild. (For bonus points: something was written on Thror's head, but I have forgotten. What?)

Hmmm, the Steward of Gondor who granted Saruman to dwell in Orthanc was Beren, so he could possibly said this as a reply to Saruman´s request. Curunír was still a protecor and west-guard against the Dunlendings back then.

Random Orc and Various Goblin (or Balrogs or easterlings or something) talking about Dagor Bragollach. The shiny guy is Fingolfin. In the end Fingolfin cut off Morgoth Bauglir's foot Then Morgoth smashed him to bits. Then Thorondor King of Eagles took flight from the peaks of Crissaegrim and marred the face of the Dark Lord and bore up the body of the King of the Noldor.

Gadalf the first time he attempted to ride the (surprisingly quick and restive) Shadowfax.

Gandalf tamed Shadowfax and eventually rode him, but the rider who spoke this seems to have fallen off. Try again.

If the horse is still Shadowfax, Gandalf said

Quote:
Never before had any man mounted him...

so it could be any man. Of course, probably only Theoden would have called Shadowfax "mine." But I can't really seeing him failing to mount. I think that such a wise horseman would have succeeded or he'd have known that it was impossible and left Shadowfax alone.
Therefore, I'm guessing this might be Grima trying to mount the horse he was offered when he left Edoras.

Quote:
"Give him a horse if he wishes it," said Theoden. "And if any will bear him," said Eomer.

Nope. The speaker was documented to have fallen from a horse.

Must be Léod, Èorl´s father, who died being thrown off by Félarof.
