I wonder if sauron would have been destroyed if Isildur
would have cast the ring into the flames o f Orodruin?
And isnt it said that Sauron wasnt destroyed totally but would come back again after.... many many years after Frodo's great deed?

Of course he was not, only he lost the ability of rebuilding his fea. As for him coming back - the final battle is still to come.
Would Isildur destroy the ring immediatlely, Sauron would become powerless ghost some 3000 years earlier than he actually did. Still, things might have been different, but they could not have been better

Re: Sauron and his Ring
I've got to admit that 'could have been better' phrase is starting to lose its appeal.... kind of like a song played too many times on the radio.

Partially answered by Herenistarion

Quote:
by Herenistarion

Correct.

Quote:
by Herenistarion
As for him coming back __ the final battle is still to come.

The final battle is still to come yes, but Sauron would/will not be a part of it.
LETTERS #200

Quote:
J.R.R.Tolkien
After the battle with Gil-galad and Elendil, Sauron took a long while to re-build, longer than he had done after the Downfall of Numenor (I suppose because each building-up used up some of the inherent energy of the spirit, which might be called the 'will' or the effective link between the indestructible mind and being and the realization of its imagination). The impossibility of re-building after the destruction of the Ring, is sufficiently clear 'mythologically' in the present book.

While Tolkien asserts that the mind and spirit are indestructible, the ability to "realize its imagination" of a body once again is beyond Sauron's ability. He is forever doomed to bodiless form.

Re: re
No problem.
That's one of the reasons for this board.
Discussion of information is one aspect.
Having a genuine question answered is another.
Herenistarion had already done a good job on that.
My post was just spit and polish.
A good way to remember the difference between Fea (Spirit) and Hroa (Body) is to associate Fea with Feanor 'Spirit of Fire'.

Re: radio hit #1

BW, next hit on the air will be: ...but what they are really like, and what lies beyond them, only those can say who have climbed them
Of course, quote might have been diff... ;)

If the ring had been cast into the pit of fire earlier, Sauron would have fallen after the last alliance. He was defeated firstly by the ring being cut from his hand, and then he would have been utterly cast down with it's destruction shortly after if Isildur had cast it into the fire of Mt. Doom. Thus the quest would have never come to pass. Perhaps Bilbo would have been killed in the orc mountain where he found it, although it wouldn't have been by Gollum's hand, but by something else most likely. Remember, Gollum would have never came to be. Middle Earth would have drastically been changed, seeing as how the elven rings would have been affected byt he destruction at that time.

You're right. Middle-earth would have been dractisslay (spelling) changed and maybe for the worst. the elves would have passed out of Middle-earth ages ago. Aragon may have never came to be. Bilbo may have not been born. Gandalf and the other wizards would have never have come to Middle-earth.
But what is the final battle?

and perhaps something even more powerful than Sauron could have been created-the possibilities are endless
