When my mom was refering to leprecans as "the wee people" it reminded me of hobbits. This got me thinking, are leprecans really hobbits? Though they could be dwarves because of the gold. Or elves because of their magic. What do you think they are?

I think leprecans are like a tolkin / some other fantasy writers hypbrid of "little people" and they plan to someday make them exist (if they dont already) and eventually take over the UN and conqure us all...not really. but i do think theyre pretty cool anyway. happy st. partricks day...

Leprechauns are neither hobbit nor dwarf nor elf. They are not a creation of Tolkien at all. Actually, if you look back at many legends, elves are also little mischievous sprites that liked to be mean to weary travelers, tricking them into trouble like no other. So, in a way, leprechauns could be considered elves or sprites. But to me, they're just a legend and a fun one at that (teasing the nephews has always been my favorite pasttime. smilies/evil.gif).

Tom Bombadil is sorta like a leprechaun...they're both sickeningly happy and you can imagine him in leprechaun attire skipping around and singing, once in a while clicking his heels... smilies/biggrin.gif

Great St Patricks day thread. Happy St Patricks day! Oh yes, that was 2 days ago. If Leprachauns were crossed with Hobbits they'd hide mushrooms at the end of rainbows!
