View Full Version : The scariest LotR character

Galenfea of Mirkwood.

Many apologies if this has been done before, but if it has I haven't found it.
I think that the scariet character in the book is Tom Bombadil smilies/eek.gif and the scariest character in the film is... it's a close thing between Elrond and Galadriel.

(having seen the extended DVD i would tentatively add Haldir)

When Grima tells Saruman (in the movie!) they will be bringing women and children to Helms Deep, the way Saruman's eyebrow jumps up and he almost smiles is scary! ( no, it's hilarious, no scary, no.... smilies/biggrin.gif ) smilies/cool.gif

I'm inclined to agree, although The thing that really scared me in that scene was the tone of voice Wormtounge used for the word "Women"

Thanks loads for replying, everyone!

sitting at home as I am now, with the TV in the background and a mouthfull of coco-pops, I am not easily scared of anything. However, in middle-earth, I would be scared of anything that is pointing a weapon at me with that famous "I dont like you so i shall re-arrange your face" look in its eye! smilies/biggrin.gif

No way, man! Wormtongue's so hot! (Ok, mildly kidding... he's my favourite character but I do think he needs a makeover and some therapy.)
My scariest (movie) character has to be Eowyn. Stalking Aragorn, and those bulging eyes... smilies/eek.gif Eep....

Horse-Maiden of the Shire
01-12-2003, 10:17 PM
Eowyn? Elrond? Galadriel? Tom Bombadil? You people have funny things to be scared of. Actually, i shouldnt be talking because isnt Eomer scary? He always looks like if you say the wrong thing, he'll pull out his sword and skewer you on the spot. Dontcha think?

Liriodendron
01-12-2003, 10:23 PM
Heh heh! I forgot about Eomer, Horse-maiden! smilies/biggrin.gif You are so right, based on looks, he is quite scary! He looks like he's either going to skewer you or explode! (of course, his situation was rather dire... smilies/smile.gif )

Meela

treebeard was scary at first

and i must be the only person in existence who loves grima as he is!! im sure he has fans, but nobody thinks the pale and the hair is nice... except me smilies/biggrin.gif

Hellooooo, hasn't anyone recalled the totally freaky and deranged look Faramir gives Frodo?! Sorry, but it freaked me considering the fact that Faramir is supposed to be all self-righteous and everything, and here he is actually going to take the Ring from Frodo. God, I HATE it when directors go away from the storyline! smilies/mad.gif

Meela
01-13-2003, 03:06 PM
Faramir??? my god, he is hot... scary, yes... but he could win in a pouting contest!

What about the freaky and deranged look Frodo has during the entire movie?

Meela

lol, especially the voice he uses in osgiliath, when the nazgul are coming, and he says "They're here" or whatever

He always looks like if you say the wrong thing, he'll pull out his sword and skewer you on the spot.
I think he probably would.

Meela, you and I have the same taste in men. Wormtongue, Faramir...

And come on, guys, the part where Frodo "wraiths out" with the freaky-deaky voice was one of my favourite parts of the movie! They're here.... Sweet....

Meela
01-13-2003, 03:18 PM

I'm supprised no one has said the most obviouse of all
Ring Wraiths! Black Riders, hello!?
Especially when they appear our of no where screatching as they do.
Denathor is strange too.
Grima is uh . . . in need of help.
Saruman is cool and evil
Eowyns eyes are bulging!
But I'm sure that anyone of the fellowship charging enraged towards me would be frightening. Especially Gimli or Legolas with grey eyes. (But that's more a respectful fear.)
Oh! Also the Wargs, they're pretty nasty!

Meela
01-13-2003, 03:56 PM

denethor = goddam hot

...especially the voice he[Frodo] uses in osgiliath, when the nazgul are coming, and he says "They're here"...
I beg your pardon, but that voice is cool! I dunno, I think the scariest character is..........Galadriel, in the movie anyway. Ya know, I'm really surprised no one has said Sauron yet. Just thought that was odd. One more thing....
denethor = goddam hot

In the movie, the scariest charater is Faramir, just because he is so different than in the book. And the way he treats Sam and Frodo is just terrible. In the book the scariest charater is Gollum (sorry Gollum lovers but I personally think he is pure evil smilies/evil.gif well not really because you feel sorry for him and I know he probably dosen't mean it, but I was like Sam, I wanted to kill him )

Taure Leafsilver
01-13-2003, 08:32 PM
I'm like you Gorwingel. I wanted to kill gollum in the book, but then I listened to "gollum's song" and realy started to pity him.
As for scariest chariter Frodo, That voice is cool but scary. Oh! and Theoden (the king I think) when he looks like his skin is made of sand-paper......eeeeeeeewwwwwwwwww

While I think that Ugluk (and most orcs/uruk hai) arn't scary at all, that one orc with the deformed face that followed merry/pippin into fangorn got me the first time I saw it...

O yeah, and the black riders of course, when the one on the horse flys out of nowhere in that forest near the buckleberry ferry...

Come ON, people!

Elrond is darn gorgeous! MORE PICS, PLEASE!
Grima is cute. I felt so sorry for him, I just wanted to hug him. The same with Gollum.
Sauron..... He is HOT! (Especially in his armour in the beginning of FOTR) smilies/tongue.gif smilies/tongue.gif smilies/tongue.gif

Now, the one I find scary is Frodo! I mean, his eyes are simply just terrifying.

And that line "They're here" always cracks me up. It makes me think about the little girl in the movie Poltergeist. That was her line shortly before she got sucked into the TV. smilies/biggrin.gif

elentari, that is pretty much me to. Scariest in TTT is Eomer. He looks like he is going to bite everybodys head off! I know i put this already but TOO bad! Nya! Lol!

I'd say the scariest characters are

1st Prize equal: The Nazgul and their steeds

3rd prize: The blonde Uruk-hai.

Sorry, but that guy really freaks me out!

And then I'd have to say Grima scares me a lot, or at least gives me the creeps, because he's such a treacherous bas*ard. And Saruman's pretty worrisome, too. But Sauron doesn't really scare me at all...on second thought, his eye with all the electricity is pretty scary, so he's back. And then...the 'unexorcised' Theoden. Yeerch. And...and I've forgotten the other scary people.

It may just be me...I find, in the book and the movie, the ringwraiths to be much scarier when on horseback than on the flying creatures.
And I tend to find Saruman scarier than Sauron. (BTW, in Fellowship movie, in the beginning when Sauron holds up the one ring after forging it, doesn't his armour make him look fat? Like he has a big beer belly or something.)
I suppose in both examples it is because Saruman and horsed wraith's are closer, more 'in your face' kind of thing then Sauron in his far-away scary tower and wraiths up in the air.

I can't decide! All those mentioned in this thread are scary/creepy in one way or the other... All I can say is that Sauron is the ultimate evil and so ought to be the scariest one. Just saying he OUGHT to be, not that he really is.
In both FoTR&TTT there was one scene that made me jump. In FoTR it was Bilbo trying to touch the Ring (in Rivendell) but now I can't remember which it was in TTT! smilies/rolleyes.gif Got to go and see it again! smilies/biggrin.gif

Just as a warning- I'm new to this forum, so I don't exactly know what I'm doing. I think that the scariest character in the movie has got to be Galadriel. For heaven's sake- she turned blue and aquired a voice not dissimilar to The Rock! In the books, however, I'm torn between the Witch King (does he actually have a real name?) and Ghan-buri-Ghan (you just don't know enough about him and his people for comfort, and the whole "the winds are changing" thing was pretty cool.) I'm also confused as to where people are getting Denathor from. Has anyone actually seen him yet?

Sapphire_Flame

Denethor is creepy in the books. I mean, come on, the guy is a complete looney. By the Valar! I don't know how anyone can deal with him at all.

But I agree with your sentiment, Feanor, that in the Movie, Galadriel is the creepiest. The whole Sauron voice-over thing was just awful. That is *so* not how I pictured her in the Books! smilies/eek.gif

go to councilofelrond (i presume its .com)
along the top is a row of links: my account, elronds library, last homely house, and gallery. click on gallery (naturally!) and it will come up with lots of little white boxes, each with a gold ring on and a title next to it. scroll down the page and u will find rotk pics. there are pics from various stuff, including rotk calendar pics, and one is of denethor (this is how/where i fell in love with him).

warning: if u really want to wait for the film to see shelob, dead saruman, denethor, aragorn as king, etc. dont go here, as u basically see all this and it may spoil the surprise for u

also, many people i think have seen the pic of denethor at onering.net, or lordoftherings.net, under character biographies. i think its onering.net, but try both

I just have to say that:

Galadriel is the scariest,

Gollum us the coolest,

Sam is evil,

Frodo and Elrond need help (it's the eyebrows),

Faramir looks like he wants to kill everyone,

AND

Aragorn is HOT!!!!!!!

That's it for now!

Tom Bombadil is definitely the most scary book character! What a creepy, creepy man...

Uh...trying to remember TTT, been ages since I saw it last....

Elrond wasn't scary in that bit he was WAY cool! Mind you I can see how you'd be scared if you were Arwen.

The orc that followed Merry and pippin was damn ugly and disturbing though.

Frodo's voice was also way cool. I loved that bit!

Faramir was pretty scary though....

Hmm, who was I going to gasp about again? Oh yeah.
*GASP* Tom Bombadil was awesome!!
Book character had to be Denethor, now that I think about it. Come on, the guy wanted to burn himself and his son to death! Can you say loony bin?
FotR movie character was Sauron. His helmet scared the HELL outta me.
TTT movie character was definitely Grishnakh. AAH! His skin was purple and he had cataracts. Err....

Tom Bombadil is just far too jolly for his own good. I haven't read the books in a while (and shame on me, haven't even read the whole of the third) but I never liked him.
As for Denethor I haven't got as far as the crazy-crazy yet. Although I read the first two books ages ago I just havent had time for the third. Sniff. smilies/frown.gif

Rightly so? I know that over-enthusiastic types that say things like "So how has your week been? I haven't seen you for ages!!" can get extremely annoying - I learned the hard way - but Tom Bombadil doesn't try to force his cheerfulness on anyone. He's just really casual.

*Yells* "Can someone please back me up here?!?"

Oh well. God bless, and I don't care whether you believe in him or not, I'm sick of people saying things like "Don't force your beliefs down other people's throats" when it's only their defensive imagination trying its hardest to keep any proof that God is real away from them.

Yes, Lurtz is pretty scary, the only thinh that spoils him for me is that, is it just me or does he actually hold the arrow in his fist as he draws it? Hear, hear! Denethor is the scariest book character, in my opinion... and I just can't wait to see how he is portrayed in the movie! smilies/biggrin.gif

Scariest movie character is harder to choose. Hmm... I'd have to say Lurtz. Not only is he physically freaky, but any living creature that actually pushes itself onto a sword blade and looks like they ENJOY it need some serious help.

I had to watch the movie a couple times before I even realized the guy was deliberately impaling himself. It's just so outrageous. And he pulls that dagger out of his own meaty thigh--and licks it. Nice.
The first time I saw Gollum and heard his voice, I was disturbed. In TTT I was disturbed again. It creeps me out how thin he is and his eyes look like they're gonna pop out. And I like Gollum. But this think writhing about, his knobby spine sticking out, freaks me out most.

Frodo's blue eyes are indeed natural. What is unnatural is that ENTIRE SCENES were changed, with the swipe of a mouse, to nighttime. You can see this being done on the Extended Edition CD, special features. I believe it was a Lorien scene but I'm not ceratin; however, they change it from daytime to dark, and in those scenes, as the entire scene darkens, Frodo's eyes end up looking basically purple.

Not his fault.

The scariest characters are the ring wraiths. Scarier than Sauron and all them. Why?
I've never had a nightmare before, then one night, I had a one about them chasing me and the only place to hide was a classroom made of glass. I know, kind of stupid, but I was genually scared.
That's why their the scariest.

In the movies, I would have to go with the people who said Lurtz. That is one messed up character.

In the books, I would have to say (Don't kill me, Meela!) Denethor. I mean, the guy burns himself, alive, and tries to do it to his son, too.

And the thing about Elijah's eyes...well, two of my sisters have eyes that color, only they don't have black hair.

strange, strange...How can you possibly think that Frodo or legolas is a scary character???
I haven't read the whole thread, but what definitely scared me the most, is the eye of Sauron smilies/eek.gif
And the voice that comes along with it!

and also, the one black rider that looks for the hobbits when they are hiding behind the tree...

Lyta_Underhill

Well, let's see, Legolas could be scary, if you were an orc on the wrong side of his bow! His movements are actually so precise, quick and devastating that yes, if I had to face Legolas in battle, I'd be scared! I can see a young orcling having a nightmare about an elf that he sees in the distance in a forest and all of a sudden, the elf is upon him, arrow in skull..too late! The Elf of Death! BWAHAHAHAAAAAAAAAA!!!!!! It depends on your POV, I suppose!

And I must say Denethor is scary, but he is also quite fascinating; everyone thinks he is like Boromir, just because he favors Boromir, but his learnedness in lore and his responsibility to his station, are very Faramir-like; but he is rotted from within by Sauron, his great knowledge and powerful personality twisted into an equally powerful despair. Anyone under his command would quail at his destructive madness! (Except Pippin! Go Pippin!) Denethor reminds me of a man with a pressure switch bomb in his hand; really scary! It really took an extraordinary effort to defuse him!

And about Frodo being scary--when he's under the Ring's influence, yes, he's scary! But I find myself feeling more scared FOR him than OF him. The fear coming from Frodo and that I share in is a very spiritual fear, a fear of being overcome by an unknowable evil, like looking into the eyes of a schizophrenic person or being afraid you are going mad yourself. But the eyes are scary in that mad way. I did notice they looked purple in the extended VHS version of FOTR, but passed it off to lighting (light to dark scene--that was odd in itself!).

I'm sure I'll think of more scary characters...bye for now!

Cheers,
Lyta
