View Full Version : Weirdest places you've seen LOTR

Being a very popular book and movie, people everywhere have been adding LOTR. TV shows, fund raisers everywhere!
Where are weird places you've seen it mentioned?
I've been to bible camps with LOTR baised topics,
Last night on the new Simpsons, one of the characters was obviously a Gollum knockoff,
"My precious, my preeciouus, gollum!"
He said as he carried away a bag of garbage walking Smeagol style.
I went to a V-ball tourney at UBC and there on the wall was a poster of undergrads who wanted to celebrate TTT. I'm still researching that and I'll come up with a link for those who are interested.

On the Sci-Fi channel there is this show called "Mystery Science Theater 3000". The show is about these three guys who watch this horrible movies and make funny coments while watching them.
Well in one episode they were watching this sort of medevil movie. At one point the heros are captured by these tree people. When the heros try to escape the tree people start running around and one of them keeps shouting "I'M COMIIIIING!". Finally, one of the guys watching the movie says "Shut up Legolas."
Then later in the movie, the heros enter a cave and one of the guys watching says "Hello Gollum."

*giggles* I adore MST3K. smilies/biggrin.gif
I was on a bus headed for school, just kinda gazing out the window like I usually do. I suddenly heard:
"He was in Goldeneye." So my attention was slightly averted from the scenery outside. I idly thought, "That'd be cool if they were talking about Sean Bean, but nobody knows about him, so it's probably Pierce Brosnan or something." My stop came up some few minutes later and as I stood to leave, I glanced in the seat in front of mine and there staring back at me was a huge larger-than-life Boromir picture. One of the kids had purchased a LotR movie book and was reading up on Sean Bean. I almost choked right then and there and was rather happy for the rest of the day (despite a parting shot that the kid said: "He's really ugly." *sigh* Can't win 'em all....)

Yes, Rose, they have often made LotR remarks on that show. I think I've heard them mention Gandalf, too, in one episode.

These dimwits in one of my classes one day suddenly started blabbering on about Lotr. They got it all wrong, of course, but it surprised me to know that they liked it. Okay, so I expected the fact that they only liked Orlando Bloom...

I'm told that there is a christian camp where the total theme is LOTRs, and that all the halls and stuff in "Rivendell", the main center, are filled with pics of LOTR characters.........

WHAT'S THE CAMP NAME?!
Anyways, For some reason things on so many websites are named after stuff from LOTR. For example, I attempted to name a pet after Luthien and it wouldn't work, so I tried every other character I could think of and it was taken! Spooky. Well, not really.

THe one I went to is called Camp Homewood, on Quadra Island, which is a little island off Vancouver Island in BC in Canada. It's so much fun there. I could get you info if you like.

Don't know if this counts, but my chocolate Easter Egg this year was made by Rohan, France.
And off course my Math teacher always mentions LotR in classes, mostly that he saw the dvd yesterday, or wants to borrow the game from somebody etc.

Rohan is a town/city!! In Bretagne! Would be cool living there... smilies/biggrin.gif
And it's also a royal family...
And a place where you can buy clothes (http://www.rohan.co.uk/) in Great Britain.
And somehow the word Rohan is connected to San Diego State University...
And there's a Rohan Group (http://www.rohangroupin.com/)...
Oh dear, that was just a quick search... smilies/rolleyes.gif

Okay okay.
This kind of ties along with signs and word hallusinations as well.
Now that I've admit that I'm obsessed, I started to see LOTR everywhere. Everything would remind me of it.
I would be reading a Macleans mag. and there was a huge 4 page spread about Tolkien, or reading another magazine and they'd have done an interview with Elijah Wood(Not a teen mag. I swear)
I guess my keen site is now keener for LOTR.

As you can see in my new signature, my cadet band 386 Komox kicked butt at Band Comp. 2003!
The organiser or the competition's name happened to be Jerry Underhill, and I started to wonder how many other Underhills there are in my area. There are loads! Also, in a town close to me lives a fellow by the name of Frodo Baggins!
I checked my phone book once and found numerous Tooks and Brandybucks. Check your's and you might find something.

Several months ago, I was watching the Shakespeare play, The Comedy of Errors, when one of the Dromios did what appeared to be a Gollum impression. It went something like this:
Smeagol Dromio: We must help master.
Gollum Dromio: No! Master will suck our blood.
I'm not sure if those lines were exactly from Shakespeare's play. smilies/rolleyes.gif
Also, during my vacation last week in Newport, Oregon, I visited the Wax Works museum. In the museum, there were several wax figures portraying celebrities, historical figures, and fictional characters. I was just finishing staring at the Loch Ness monster when I came across Bilbo and Gollum. It was the Riddles in the Dark scene! Ok, the wax figures looked rather fake (nothing like Madame Toussante's wax creations), but I was so excited by the fact that they had used a scene from one of Tolkien's books that I couldn't help but jump for joy.

A lot of people in my church youth program like lotr. (we even all went to see TTT after an event, but I was still surprised this one time when I went to this event and it was lotr themed. We took this whole walk and my youth pastor put on a cloak and started telling us about our walk and he said to watch out for goblins and ringwraiths and along the way people on horses dressed as characters gave us these bags and said "keep it secret, keep it safe." and at the end my youth pastor told this story about his dwarf friends. It was kind of odd, but fun. I kept saying things like "where do I get one of those cloaks?" "some lembas sure would be good right now" I think some people who don't like lotr were getting really annoyed with me. hehe

I was watching a new episode of The Twilight Zone and saw several LotR posters on the walls of some kid's room in the background. Turns out New Line runs the Twilight Zone show now... so that explains that.
Yesterday I saw Duracel commercial that had an advertisement for the TT DVD attached to it. It started with a kid playing with LotR action figures with a voice over saying something like:
"When trying to decide the best battery to illuminate your playing field, consider this: the crew of the LotR movies (shoot to some screen shots of TTT) trusted Duracel in the production of their movie. (blah, blah, blah...) ... and buy TTT on DVD on Aug 26th."
Yea, it was all quite strange. Oh well. Buy Duracel!

Guy 1:Hey dude, what's your favourite movie?
Guy 2:LotR: TTT.
Guy 1: Guess what. You can get it free with these two way radios.
Guy 2: Free?!?

Guy 2: You suck, man.
And that's the long and short of it.

There was a southpark knockoff of it, but I didn't see it. My friend Justin just told me about it. Also, if anyone here reads the comics, Get Fuzzy and/or Foxtrot, they have LOTR topics in them sometimes. I cut them out and hang them on my bedroom door. In Get Fuzzy, it was an ongoing 'story' for about a week where the cat, Bucky, wants his friend, a cat named Frodo, to throw his collar into the furnace. Also, in Fox Trot, Jason wants to use his dad's wedding ring to see TTT premerie, and there's another one where Jason and his friend are stuck in a tree and his older brother Peter comes out and says, "why if it isn't merry and pippin".
On this gameshow, Beat the Geek, there was a question "who were the actors in the movie Lord of the Rings and what charactors did they play" I named them in like fourty seconds. Heheehehe...I'm obsessed

One day after getting my newest Led Zeplin CD I was listening to Ramble on. And suddenly the words, " In the darkest depths of Mordor I meat a Girl so fair, but Gollum and the evil war creapt up and sliped away with her..."
Not to mention the other day I had my copy of the JRR tolkien's letters at church and I was just highlighting things that seemed realavent while the preacher was talking about making peace with God. And I can drag LOTR into any conversation especialy if it envolves getting my copy of the Hobbit back from my cousin's boyfreind. " We wants it, my precious...."

I saw a LotR refrecnce on an episode of Friends the other day. Chandler and Ross had a friend they called Gandalf, and this is how the conversation went:
Joey: But why do you call him Gandalf?
Chandler: *in a you-should-know-what-I'm-talking-about voice* Gandalf? Gandalf the wizard?
Joey: *blank stare*
Chandler: Didn't you read "The Lord of the Rings" in high school?
Joey: No... I had sex in high school.

One of my neighbors has a bumper sticker that says "Not all who wander are lost." I also once saw that on a t-shirt that had nothing whatsoever to do with LotR. There is also a store in my city called Lothlorien co-op and a company called Bag End Sound Productions. Plus, there are a couple of streets with LotR names like Ent, Merry, Greenwood, and Greenleaf, but alas, I have no digital camera, so I can't send them into the Signs section smilies/frown.gif .

Guys, I have met a hobbit!!!
Well, okay not a real hobbit, but close enough.
K, some people know how I spent my summer...
Okay, it was at band camp for those who didn't know.
My theory instructor was 4,8 and the smallest guy I have ever seen(that wasn't a midget or a dwarf) Thing was that he was all prepotioned so he looked normal. He was hilarious, he could never sit still or stop talking, he was always eating or drinking something(so hobbitesk) only problem was that he was indeed very small, not chunky like normal hobbits.
He had a kid too, she was adorable.

My school is going LOTR crazy, and it is driving me crazy smilies/eek.gif (I don't know why, it just does). The Library has gone all LOTRified. There is someone in my school that created a paper mache Gollum, that is currently on display, holding a little ring, and kneeling over a pile of books. I first saw him a couple days ago. I was walking down the hall, looked in the window, and said to myself "Gollum, it's Gollum! what?".
Additionally they also have the posters that say things like "Reading: Make it a hobbit" with the pictures of the charaters from the movie. I know it is a library, and about every library has LOTR. But this is a lot of LOTR in one, and it is kind of strange.

Annalaliath, Led Zeppelin was (is?) highly influenced by LOTR. Many of their songs has words/names from Tolkien's work or at least references. *Disclaimer* Any references and behind the songs meaning I got off the Internet at Led Zeppelin sites.
A few examples...
'Ramble On' -Has the phrase you mentioned, it is supposed to be about Frodo's journey.
'Misty Mountain Hop' -Most obvious is the name Misty Mountain. One can take it as a boy's experience with drugs and hippies but it is said to be Bibo's story. Bilbo is the boy, Gandalf is the policeman and the dwarves are his friends that "would all drop by".
'Battle of Evermore' -Supposed to be about the Battle of Pelennor Fields. One of the more direct references to LOTR. With the lines "the drums will shake the castle walls,
the Ringwraiths ride in black..."
The biggest controversy is 'Stairway to Heaven'. Although I do agree that for the most part this song is not about LOTR, it still has its influences.
"There's a feeling I get when I look
to the West.
And my spirit is crying for leaving.
In my thoughts I have seen rings of smoke
through the trees.
And the voices of those who stand
looking."
The elves who leave Middle-Earth and go West.
The smoke rings remind me of Gandalf. It is also said that the picture in the middle of the cd cover (#4) is Gandalf looking over the Shire. Anyway, it's fun to look at the words of their songs and think.
At this point I don't have the websites, when I do I'll come back and link them.

Gandalf Airlines: It's the only way to 'fly you fools' smilies/biggrin.gif I think I stole that line from someone else.. I read it in some other discussion some time ago, just had to write it smilies/rolleyes.gif I discovered Gandalf Airlines all by myself though. It's an Italian airline company, I think. When I was in Paris a couple of years ago, I remember that I saw this random peddler on the side of the road, selling Rings of Power. Mind you, these were classy Rings, not the cheap dollar-store Rings, so me and my friend (who had also read LotR) took one look at each other and ran off at top speed. To this day, I still maintain that Annatar tried to give me one of the Rings of Power.

I spotted the word Beren on a wine bottle once smilies/smile.gif It worried me a bit that I connected the word first with Beren87 and second with Beren from the Silm, but that's what happens if you spend enough time here I suppose.. smilies/rolleyes.gif

You may not want to know, but I'll tell anyway smilies/biggrin.gif
Most people connect NZ with sheep (excepting a few who connect us with LotR first) so in giftshops is always a bit concerned with Chocolate covered raisins which they label sheep poo (or Dags, in the more rural areas).
Its kind of funny because you think of all these tourists buying this stuff to show off to their families while we stand there giggling. one good thing about GS's - Certain stuff is really cheap, like paua jewellery.

I'm an NZer too (live in Uk, though.) You get lots of strange shops here, aswell - I mean, Mozart hot chocolate? *worried*
I saw 'goldberry hair acsessories' the other day. They were...well, old fashioned isn't the right word. Traditional? Wooden beads and things; very nice, if your hair (unlike mine) is long enough to tie up without looking like a ridiculous version of Jim Hawkins smilies/rolleyes.gif
I've also been to a brilliant Celtic shop in Scotland which had replica swords *longing sigh*

I recently went on a retreat with my youth group and the basis of it was "Bored of the Rings", which they had people dress up as characters and walk around Pittsburgh reinacting parts of the movie and videotaped it. It was the funniest thing I've seen in some time.

I've been meaning to post on this thread for a while and keep putting off... so here it is.
Ok, I've seen LotR in two TV commericals lately. The first one was for Verizon Wireless. They showed the battle of Helm's Deep - mainly the part where the uruk's try to breech the gate. The commerical went on the say something about winning a trip to New Zealand and it mentioned the TTT Dvd. The final shot was of the Verizon guy on the other side of the gate (holding it closed) and saying "Can you hear me now? Good!" Yeah... that was a bit weird...
The other commerical was for a car (can't remember the type). These two kids (a boy and a girl) were sitting in the back of a car watching TTT on the built in TV. The girl sighed as Legolas came on screen and was 'swept away' into fantasy-Legolas land. You then hear the brother go "eh hem" and unpause the movie. LOL, it was funny. (BTW they were adverstising that if you bought TTT DVD you could save $500 on the car).
And lastly My brother saw some LotR things at a haunted house a while ago. I asked him to elaborate but he wouldn't. I just can't picture LOTR in a haunted house...

A big haunted house thing that is near here was advertised in the paper as having a 'Lord of the Rings Middle Earth Swamp'. I don' know what's in it.

I finally got my school annual today, from last year and I laughed out loud when I opened the pages for the first time. By every page number was a little thumbnail photo of some close LOTR character from TTT, only they had been digitally edited with the faces of the staff. At first I thought they were in costumes but someone pointed out they weren't. They're so well done that you can't tell they're fake. Needless to say I loved the yearbook.

I went on a car ride with my mom along the coast (southern California by the way) and I saw this weird old van that the people had got specially painted on the back "Not all those who wander are lost." It was really odd.

With Viggo getting so popular, it's just so unbecoming to see the name "Aragorn" all over the style magazines. His face is just everywhere, which isn't a bad thing, but altogether, it's just weird.

Ok this isn't exactly Lord of the Rings, actually it's the weirdest place I've seen Barrow Downs. I was watching my fave show Smallville and they were in this girl's room who was supposedly sick. I chance to look on the wall and above her dresser was the picture that Evisse the Blue uses as her avatar! Really freaked me out. smilies/eek.gif

Hahaha! I don't know how many of you watch the Simpsons but there was a new episode on last night. They went to england. How does this relate? They're walking down a street when they meet none other than Sir Ian Mckellen. He's doing some MacBeth play, they keep saying MacBeth and he gets electricuted. I heard him spout out some LOTR lines too. I couldn't be sure if it was the real voice, but it was very similar.

This isn't really "weird," really, but... You know what bugs me? *rant time*
I was flipping through my friend's Elle Girl magazine, and got...rather angry. They had a bit about upcoming movies and such, and of course RotK was there. And you know what their review was?
"One word, girls: Legolas. (and Frodo, too!)"
That makes me sick. smilies/mad.gif I'm angry at that magazine right now, don't mind me. Mindless prissy girly...*grumble grumble*

When that's all you have to review off, you have to expect magazines like that to give those kind of reviews. If you want good ROTK reviews, I wouldn't look any farther than this site...and the Victoria newspaper.

"One word, girls: Legolas. (and Frodo, too!)"
Are you serious?! That'd make me mad if I saw that while reading a magazine. Yes there's Legolas and there's Frodo; both of which (esp. the last smilies/wink.gif) are good reasons to go see the movie but they're a tiny part of the good reasons! Come on people! Grow up!!! Get some sense!
Anyway, back on topic, I recently saw a picture of Frodo on a piece of wood they were selling at the mall. Yeah, that was strange, granted I freaked out but still... strange. Frodo on wood? Who'd a thunk it?

Heh heh...yeah. I was annoyed, too.
Ooo! I noticed something today. I was playing Kingdom Hearts (great game smilies/wink.gif ) And I came across a little item. "Mythril" *giggles* Mithril! Only...with "myth" ...Hee hee! Well I thought it was funny...

I recently saw a shop called "Mellon" Something-or-other. Since I was just driving by, I didn't exactly get a chance to stop by, and see what exactly they were selling, but the funny thing was, the entrance looked exactly like the Doors of Durin. smilies/biggrin.gif smilies/biggrin.gif

Hmmm... let me see... places... Oh! i know!
Aweek ago the Ka was floating about this dark and dreary world and came across a place that reminded me of middle earth. There was this road sign with the title "Gondorean". another thing i saw was a cigarette advertisement, that on the bottom said, "The Best thing since Pipe-weed!" Hmm, must of been a weird day prehaps. Oh, well off i go to www.neopets.com, (http://www.neopets.com,) my chubchub is getting sick. smilies/rolleyes.gif smilies/biggrin.gif I'm so silly!

Does the world know yet? "Norway's 'Hobbit' idol wins World Idol"
Don't know who watches the idol shows(in whatever country) but when they did world Idol, Norway took the world by storm. Along with his new nickname 'Hobbit' given to him when one of the judges commented on the fact that he "has the voice of an angel, but you look like a hobbit. If there was a Middle-Earth Idol, you'd win it."
Despite the predictions that American Idol Kelly Clarkson would win, with a tight smile she got the modest score of second. The Hobbit is the winna!

Hobbit Power!
I saw a poster of Aragorn in a weight-lifting gym the other day. o_0. I think it was supposed to "inspire" the weight-lifters or something.

This is a nice story...SO READ IT!
It's our final concert prep. As many of you know, I spent my last 2 months at band camp. So this is what our director, a man standing at 5 feet, 4 inches tall, 27 years old and weighing in a 125 pounds, tells us.
We have a normal show, losts of crazy antics but the crack up, the last straw, the encore: A LOTR medley. I've played it before, it's a good song. But that's not all. First, he's going to open it with the voice of the prelude that Galadrial gives in the opening to FOTR...the crowd goes quiet and we open in to the main Fellowship theme, strong and proud to projected scenes carefully spliced together from the movie. Beyond cool for a bunch of teenagers right? But wait! There's more.
On the night of the performance Dustin (the director) steps out of the wings for the encore number in: A Hobbit cloak that his wife made him (broach and all) and...bare feet! In his dress uniform (it was an Air Cadet band camp) with his boss Major Deck in the audience!
Wait, I just realised that probably nobody cares or thinks thats as funny as I do...oh well, made you read it anyway.
Cheers.
