View Full Version : Honoring Those Forgotten

Hail fellow! Well Met, and Mae Govannen! We are gathered here today to honor those wonderful characters that people just seem to forget about.
To give thanks to all of those wonderous beings, let us dedicate this thread to praising the forgotten heroes.
Our first forgotten character is one of my personal favorites...BEORN the Skin changer!!!
Everyone- Who?
Just as I suspected. You have forgotten the great character who helped the dwarves and Bilbo get through Mirkwood, and fought in the Battle of Five Armies! Get down on your knees and beg for forgiveness!!!!!!
Ok, so here's how this goes. There's a whole boatload of great characters out there that people forget about. Let's give them what they deserve. Present Beorn with a gift, offer a speech, or do whatever you like to show the world how much you care about everyone's favorite bear guy. Maybe you could present your own favorite but forgotten character, and let everyone else shower them with praise. (No Meela, Denethor isn't a forgotten character.)
Gooooooooo BEORN!!!

Heh heh heh...yeah! Poor Glorfindel...
What about Ghan-buri-Ghan? "I count many things; stars in sky, leaves on trees, men in the dark" Poor thing's always forgotten. He talked like a caveman and looked like...a short, stumpy...Neanderthal...
We love him, don't we? smilies/wink.gif

We can't possibly forget our all-time favourite Elven siblings, Elladan and Elrohir!
*sees everyone's look of "Duhhh?"*
You know, Elrond's twins!
"Duhhh?"
Ehm...never mind. At least the Barrow-Downers know what I'm talking about, eh guys?

Friends, I come bearing gifts for those who are oft...not mentioned...
Beorn, I present thee with $500 towards your "Save the Bears" foundation.
For Bergil, a giant neon sign to hang around your neck, saying "I am here, and at least Pippin remembers me!"
For Glorfindel, a "Save Your Own Frodo" kit, complete with step-by-step instructions on how NOT to be left out of a movie.
For Ghan-buri-Ghan, English lessons and a spear, for killing those saber-toothed tigers smilies/tongue.gif
And for Elladan and Elrohir, name tags, so that you will be recognised in the Council of Elrond.
Almighty forgotten characters! May your names go down in history amoung those who...have way too much spare time on thier hands and decide to go through the books remembering you...

And let us not forget the Baddies: Snaga (in all his appearances...) and those two orcs Frodo and Sam see when crossing Gorgoroth. Any more?

I give a toast to all the Dwarves in The Hobbit... some of the kindest and yet overlooked Dwarves in Middle Earth!
Especially worthy of recognition are Balin, Dori, Gloin... and who could forget Bombur? Dwarves are many times called gruff and unfriendly, but these stand out as the kindest Dwarves I have ever known. It's really a shame they haven't been mentioned much after The Hobbit. They deserve recognition for their deeds.

What about Gildor? He is often forgotten, but not often forgotten is his line: "Do not meddle in the affairs of wizards, for they are subtle and quick to anger."
All hail Gildor, my favorite elf!

No one ever talks about Círdan, and yet it was he who kept the Havens open so that the Elves could continue to journey to Valinor. He also gave Narya to Gandalf when he first arrived in Middle-Earth.
And don't forget Prince Imrahil of Dol Amroth; Forlong the Fat of Lossarnach; Celebrían wife of Elrond; Thranduil father of Legolas; Rúmil and Orophin, brothers of Haldir; Lobelia Sackville-Baggins; Robin Smallburrow the Shirriff; and Will Whitfoot the Mayor. All great characters who were important in their own way, but who are destined to remain unknown to those who haven't read the books.

I am going to do a Galadriel and present gifts to my favorite forgotten characters.
Firstly, I come to Ioreth. Ioreth, I present you with a megaphone so that more people will be able to hear your words of infinite wisdom. Also, I give to you a copy of heat magazine, to feed your hunger for gossip suitably.
For you, Bard I have a quiver of arrows so that you may shoot many more evil things. May they serve you well!
Most honorable and esteemed Farmer Maggot, I give to you a pink fluffy poodle so that you may have more variety within your pack of dogs. Also, an electric fence and two rolls of barbed wire to keep unruly hobbits from your crop.
And last, but most certainly not least, I come to Quickbeam. Quickbeam, I have for you a pack of cards that you may amuse yourself with when you find your fellow Ents are being particulary slow. May you use them wisely!

And Asfaloth!!! WHO WAS GLORFINDEL'S! NOT ARWENS! Horse thief...and what of Beorn's little creatures? Them too! And the Cats of Beruthiel...little horrors...and Huan!! HUAN AND DRAUGLUIN!!! NOBODY EVER REMEMBERS HUAN!! And I better shut up now, before I get into a rant....

Yay, I'm glad someone besides me wants to remember Fili & Kili, who died defending Thorin with shield and body, for he was their mother's brother.
And what about Thorin himself? If he hadn't been so determined to avenge Erebor, the end of the books would have been quite different! "Night in Rivendell...no Queen in Gondor", according to Gandalf.
Then there's always Theoden's loyal captain, Hama! Poor soul, he died at Helm's deep, and what does he get for it? One line in TTT.
Also in TTT, Mablung and his friend whose name I forget, who are archers in Faramir's (the REAL Faramir, mind you) band in Ithilien.

Ioreth's been mentioned, but what about her kinswoman who was with her when the newly victorious King entered the city? Not only did this kinswoman provide Ioreth with an excuse for gossip (thus giving comic relief to the reader when it was sorely needed) she also managed somehow to refrain from telling Ioreth to just be quiet already! Considering that she doesn't even have her own name, Ioreth's kinswoman held her own pretty well, I would say.

And another cheer for Fili and Kili, why did they have to die?
I also feel that Otho is a very over looked character, Lobelia and Lotho are remembered often, but not Otho, just because he died before the main story began...
Harding, Guthlaf, Dunhere, Doerwine, Grimbold, Herefara, Herubrand, Horn, Fastred, Hirluin the Fair, Forlong the old, Derufin and Duilin. We mustn't forget these, they even have their own song so they would not be forgotten. They gave their lives on the Pelennor fields and for that they should be remembered.
Last but not least, I don't feel Snowmane gets quite the recognition he deserves. He bore his master quickly and without fear until, of course, he fell on his master and crushed him to death, but that wasn't his fault!

I don't agree with the whole Bombadil's forgotten thing. He's rarely forgotten by people who have read the book because there's so much controversy about him and he's not forgotten by movie goers because they never knew about him in the first place.
Pippin forgotten? That's truely terrible! I'd need a really bad case of amnesia before I forgot Pippin.

Ha! The old man, indeed, he's creepy.
My preferences about minor characters have changed during the years.
Of course, the minor characters I like I don't consider "minor". But if I were to say some really minor guys (mentioned in only a few sentences or having one or two lines in the whole story) whom I really like and whom even I consider minor, who occurs to me first is Lugdush. I think he must be cool.
And if we move to those whom I don't consider minor, but whom I think some people might (how dare they!), there will definitely be Gorbag, the one and only metaphysical philosopher of the Orcs, and of course Uglúk, who in my opinion cannot be considered a minor character in any case, because there is simply a whole chapter only about him!
From the more First-Age-type people, Aerin is definitely there.
I am sure I could think of more, but right now I am thinking in one limited circle, maybe later something will remind me of a different kind of people...
Galadriel55
12-21-2010, 02:41 PM
And speaking of Arien, what about Tilion? And another first age character that is often forgotten is Aerin.
Ugluk is my favoutire orc, and he definitely is not that "minor". Gorbag is definitely "the one and only metaphysical philosopher of the Orcs", and that's saying something! :) And Gothmog is often forgotten as well - not the first age balrog, the 3rd age "vice captain".

I always thought Halbarad got a raw deal. And the other Dunedain that rode with Aragorn didn't even get mentioned by name!

I agree! Halbarad, along with the other unnamed Dunedain were my favorites (just because I love the Dunedain and their history :p)!
As someone has already mentioned too, Elladan and Elrohir. In my opinion, they may have been rarely seen in the books, but when they are Tolkien speaks highly of them. ;) So I suppose everyone considers them minor since we hardly see them, but in my mind they're not! They're actually my two most favorite characters from the series itself, their father coming in second.
Haldir was minor in the books, but not so much in the movies, as we all have seen. While I appreciate PJ making him a little more important in the movies...even if he did have to kill him *grumbles*...I prefer the Haldir from the books, his personality appealed more to me.
Gildor Inglorion. He saved the hobbits, simply by him and his company walking through the woods, singing (If memory serves me correctly)! Gildor sent word out for the others to be on the lookout for the hobbits. Had it not been for him, maybe Tom or Aragorn wouldn't have found them! And surely Lord Glorfindel wouldn't have known about them either. Well, he may have given Lord Elrond has the gift of foresight...but I digress. The point is, Gildor is just as important as any of the others!
Asfaloth. Hey, I'm horse crazy ;) I would have loved to have seen more of Asfaloth!
There's no doubt more to list, but I haven't the time to list all of them!

I so agree about Halbarad, Elladan, and Elrohir!
And just to add to the horse list, Roheryn, Arod, Hasufel, Nahar, and Rochallor, Snowmane, Stybba, Bill, Fatty Lumpkin, Strider, Felarof, Lightfoot, Arroch, Firefoot, and Windfola.

And Gothmog is often forgotten as well - not the first age balrog, the 3rd age "vice captain".
The Orc from the movies? If it's the one from the movies(Still haven't read the book yet..), then I didn't think he was forgotten. I usually look at him as that orc that everyone knows and.. Hates.. :|
Well, here goes..
GO GOTHMOG, ORC LIEUTENANT OF MORGUL!
I didn't like him either when I first saw him. But i eventually got used to him and, by some strange, unusual twist of fate, he became one of my favorite characters from the films. Sure, he looks to boot, but he's a pretty cool character! Side Stepping that boulder. Admit it, it was cool when he did that.. When I first watched the movie at the theaters, I looked at him as being one of those things that keep bugging you.. But after watching the movie omptean gazillion times(the extended edition atleast), it started looking more like he was a somewhat important character. It's a shame not many people really like him. :( Although I am sure there are some that think he's cool, but won't admit it.. :D
Also, Lurtz, though he isn't as bad as Gothmog when it comes to rememberence.. Even though his crime for killing Boromir is remembered and is loathed for it. Still, he's a pretty cool character as well(Ain't too shabby looking for an Uruk either!).
And with that, I offer them..
