View Full Version : Label yourself as a Downie!

One Axe to Rule them All
08-19-2003, 09:01 AM
I was thinking, i'm sure some of us have been somewhere and missed another downer by ten feet or so.

So why don't we label ourselves as downies!
Stand up and proudly state it, "I'm A Downie!"

I was thinking a "I'm a downer" Bumper sticker, or something like that..

does anybody have any suggestions or ideas?

Oh!!! Can we have badges???? (Opps, nearly put badgers... that would be strange) **Goes to make a badge**

Actually, that's a great idea!!! Yay!!! **Displays her new badge, proudly**

Ummm, you can order Barrow-Downs T-shirts (see top of page) and wear them proudly! I wore mine to the TTT movie showing; unfortunately though, no one recognized it...

We could use the "Do the Wave for Boromir the Disco King!" as a byword, too. (If anyone ever appears on tv, use that!) I wouldn't mind a bumper sticker of that...of course I'd have to have a car first. And a licence... smilies/frown.gif

I'll have to get one of those shirts and wear it to RotK.

I was just thinking that having stickers that say 'I'm a downer' might not be the best self-promotion technique... smilies/wink.gif
But yes, buy the shirt, buy the hat, tell all your friends! Display any Downie Awards with pride on your mantle! Pepper your conversations with Downs codephrases, such as 'Boromir the Disco King' or 'Do nazgul have wings?' smilies/smile.gif But most of all, live it out! Don't ask me how, I haven't figured it out completely myself. It sounds inspirational though. smilies/biggrin.gif

Ooo! I'm all up for that! I wrote it in chalk on my friend's driveway, but I guess no one noticed...I didn't get any strange visitors or anything. smilies/frown.gif

Heh heh...that's a good point...

I'd love a Boromir the Disco King bumper sticker. Of course, I don't have a car, much less a license...I have my permit, though! ...

Has anyone ever met another Downer? By accident or not? I'd love too, someday... *dream*

I already know that we have T-shirts for sale, and they are great, i'm planning on buying one sometime in the future, but until then, i was thinking crop circles....

Or maybe we could stick with just small stuff like bumper stickers and badgers...
did I say badgers...?

But maybe we could make a short film or something and get it played when ROTK comes out....

Or maybe we could make brain-control chips and slip them in every big-mac in the USA so that millions of people will suddenly want to join the BD's....

But really, what would the best way of identifying other downies quickly and easily be? (besides wearing the same barrow-downs t-shirt every day for the next 3 months)

Amarantha,
I met a fellow BDer! (http://forum.barrowdowns.com/cgi-bin/ultimatebb.cgi?ubb=get_topic&f=14&t=000737) is a thread for those who have met, or who want to meet. There are many other threads in the Barrow Downs forum for specific places like the Midwest or London. Check them out. Perhaps you'll get to meet a fellow BDer yourself someday! smilies/smile.gif

How about getting a nice big plane and trailing a nice big banner that says "The Barrow-Downs Rocks" but then again, I'm all up for the micro-chips in big macs.

Or we could all go to the premiere of RoTK in New Zealand, wearing 'downs T-shirts and make sure to get our short film played. heh..

Well, since I live in the Tree Hugger state in the US, it's kinda expensive to go to NZ, but hey, if anyone wants to hitch me a ride there, I'd be glad to go! smilies/wink.gif

I'm working on the gills thing, I figured that constsnt exposure to a ring of power would give us gills of we start exactly 32 years, seventeen hours, ten minutes, and forty-three seconds ago...

But we could go with the hijacking plan, I might be able to get my hands on a couple of fake uzis....

We could go around constantly chanting the "Cold be heart and hand and bone" speech too.

Then again, why do we need all these conventional methods when all BDers are much more intellectual than the average mortal? smilies/wink.gif

ElenCala Isil

I had another brilliant idea! I'm going to get a special order license plate that says 'Downie' on it! You like?! We could paint the tops of our cars with 'Downie' or 'Disco Squid' in really bright colors! Or we could take it a step further and paint our roofing with common BD's sayings! When I got to see the next movie, I'm going to wear something Downie related and do my hair up in 'the elvish' fashion! Mabey I could get my friends to do the same.... Hmmm....

Bumper stickers, yes, we need those!!!
And of course pins.

I seriously think that they need to expand the range of B-D's logo merchandise. I know I should go out and get a shirt, but I just have still not gotten to doing that. I would be much more likely to purchase a bumper sticker though because I love those.

I always think about things like this when I'm at the cinema seeing an Orlando Bloom film or at the bookshop passing by the LOTR section. "What if he's a Downie?!" Several times I've overheard conversations with some word that sounds LOTR-ish and I do my share of eavesdropping just to see. smilies/smile.gif So far though I haven't met any Downies aside from the two here I already know.

I ordered a t-shirt a while back when Mr. Smith was moving(?), I think, so it was delayed a bit. Hopefully it'll arrive soon so I can wear it to fencing tournies, Academy, and other places Downies might be lurking ... smilies/biggrin.gif

I like the buttons and bumperstickers ideas ... and the home-made t-shirt idea. With those printing stores such as Kinkos, the latter would be relatively easy. I don't think you'd be able to put LOTR pictures on them though ... aren't they copyrited (sp)?

I also agree that we should expand the Barrow-Down logo merchandise. I'm talking all the college/universtiy wear such as sweatpants, shorts, socks, sweatshirts, blankets, pennants, baseball caps, keychains, pencils, pens, travel coffee mugs ... smilies/wink.gif smilies/biggrin.gif No? Hmm ...

ElenCala Isil
08-19-2003, 06:22 PM
hmm, I used to live in Florida... heh... oooh, Downie Socks!!! why not Downie earmuffs?? If we take a cruise to New Zealand... we could tie a whole bunch of anti-lotr people to the bottom of it, and make them swim the whole way there... bwahahahahahaha then once we get there, force them to watch the animated movies till their eyes bulge, then make them watch the PJ movies and read the books if they haven't all ready.. and once they ask why the cruel and unjust punishment... just reply "What?! I'm a Downie!" smilies/evil.gif smilies/rolleyes.gif smilies/tongue.gif smilies/biggrin.gif

Actually, the bumper stickers would work but I have a much better idea. You can have "Barrowdowns" or "Do the wave for Boromir the Disco King" on the bumper stickers/T-shirts/etc. but also you should have your Downs screen name and possibly your avatar on them as well. That way, your fellow Downies could tell not only that you're a Downie, but also who you are. Just a thought.

Oh and by the way don't you think it's time for a worldwide BD event like say, a cruise or something?

Hm... seems like I'm the lucky one here- my high school actually has a Trilogy class (which I start in a week), so I can safely bet that there's at least one more downie at my school (even though the only one I knew of [Keeper of Dol Goldur] graduated)... Maybe not. At least (thankfully) people know what I'm talking about when I get on the subject of Tolkien's work, because everybody from 7th grade up has read the Hobbit at least once (required reading). I already have my Trilogy notebook painted black with WiteOut spelling "Fool of a Took, throw yourself in next time". I'll put a BD logo on it too though.

Some of us female Downies that are in High School should kindap a cheerleader and take her uniform and preform as her for the homecoming game, but instead of cheering for our team, do a Barrow Downs thing instead. I think that 'eenie, meeny, denethor.." signature I saw a few days ago would be a neat cheer. Does anyone know who's sig that is, because I love that!
I also think that all us Downies should do something. I mean, the Harry Potter people have that Nimbus2003 Convention of theirs, so why can't we have a convention? After all, LOTR was here WAY before HP.

If you've been to CBH and know who Herman and the Evil Demon Child are, please PM me!! For the rest of you, just ignore me (I was trying to think of a way of letting her know who I am without saying either of our names). I must e-mail her.

I'd love a Boromir the Disco King bumper sticker. Of course, I don't have a car, much less a license... I'm gonna try and make one for my backpack!

Well, for those of us still in school, we could put the BD logo on our binders and backpacks. Last year I had the Verse of the Rings and A Elbereth Gilthoniel written out on my binder. You could always buy a dark blue car, and paint silver stars on it if you are affiliated with the Elves. If you're all for Gondor, then you could do the same, except with a black car. For all you Rohirrim out there, just get a dark green car, and paint that swirly horse design on the Eowyn bookmark on the sides of your car. Now THAT's a sure-fire way of pointing someone out.

BTW, any Downer's in Texas? Preferably in South Texas?

There's a whole thread devoted to Middle-Earth license plates (http://forum.barrowdowns.com/cgi-bin/ultimatebb.cgi?ubb=get_topic&f=17&t=000748). Those of us who have cars (not me) could do license plates related to LotrR & the Downs.

We're currently planning a roadtrip to houston when ROTK premiers

Wonderful! You'd be coming to my hometown! Hope to see you there! smilies/smile.gif

And on people without cars buying bumper stickers, just put it on your backpack. That's what I'd do. I mean, that's kinda like *my* bumper...

I found this one site (http://www.cafeshops.com) online that allows people to sell shirts, mugs, accessories, etc for a home business/forum/site. If the BW doesn't want to have merchandise limited only to the forum off the main shop on the BD site, someone could set up a secondary shop for the BD forum, separate from the actual site shop. *shrug* just an idea...

Whatever floats your oyster was someone's signature
Rosseiliantiel's to be exact. Come join us in the Quotable Quotes forum on the BDer's Quotes/Signatures thread! smilies/biggrin.gif
Anyways, yes, I use that in conversation alot, too.
I'm trying to scrawl out some BD-related things on my book-covers at school, but the things I remember are somewhat obscure, so they probably won't attract much attention.
But as many have said, if possible, the best way to promote the Downs or identify yourself with it is the official merchandise in the shop.
Although, Finwe's car idea would be fun...not just to identify yourself as a Downie, but even for looks alone it's a winner!
Peace

on another site, my siggie has "Do the Wave for Boromir the Disco King!" and one of my friends there (also a LOTR fan) asked what the heck that was about. ^.^

I'm gonna write "Do the Wave for Boromir the Disco King" on the cover of one of my binders. And put it alongside this picture:

Ha! We all knew it was true!

Great picture, Amarantha! smilies/biggrin.gif And as to Texan Downies, I'm from Dallas. Just thought I'd put my word in. Perhaps we should just write "I'm a Downie" on our foreheads in permanent marker.... smilies/rolleyes.gif

Great picture, Amarantha!

Yeah... smilies/biggrin.gif I found it from some random Japanese doujinshi (fan-drawn comics) on e-bay. I looooove e-bay... I can't buy anything from there, though. My parents won't let me. *sniffles* I bet I could talk my dad into it, though...

That permanant marker thing is a good idea smilies/wink.gif Of course a great way to label yourself as a Downie is to convert others to BD-ism... I know a LotR fan who I plan to convert... as soon as I see him again in school. If you convert others, word will spread. Mua ha ha ha ha...

I've thought about this all summer...
Going to a band camp(I know I know) and meeting hundreds of new people, I wanted to know if any were of the downie assortment.
I would have liked to own a t-shirt, but internet sales scare me off. So what I did what proudly announce that I was a Tolkien fan and "casually" mention this web site now and again. And although I didn't meet another downie, I did meet at least three loyal Tolkien fans(Two of which bought The LOTR risk game which was fun because we were the only ones that knew how to say the names correctly) and suggested to them to visit me here. I know at least one will be joining us shortly(I'm waiting for you reTodd)

Well, I have now announced to my entire Theater class that I spend most of my time on the Downs. Sadly, no one had any idea what I was talking about. Ah, well. I'll continue to mention the Downs in everyday conversation in hopes that I will meet some of you, someday...

Me, too! I guess you aren't in my theater class. Drat.

Does anyone here do rendezvous? I was at Fort Bridger this weekend. Sooo much fun! If you've never been to one I highly recommend it. Maybe I can meet someone...?
