Oh my...i have still 5 miles to the Bald Hill in the Old Forest. I was biking(about 41 miles in two days) and now i'm sitting by the table and feeling lazy smilies/frown.gif
I really doubt my changes to make it even through the Old Forest...i always begin to count miles and then i forget it. If i counted every walk with my dog and so on i think i would have already reach rivendell...or maybe not! smilies/tongue.gif

I'm just thinking the poor hobbits: all the way with bare feet!huh!

Just a clarification:Peony's "fever" on Middle-earth related to the ten days of extreme heat and humidity in the first part of July, in the northeastern U.S., when her alter ego could not bear to drag herself outdoors. As Alatariel and Arwen Baggins had caught up with her, but then drew ahead in their mileage... Said alter ego is, however, perfectly healthy! The kind sentiments are appreciated, anyway smilies/smile.gif.

What to do with one's walking miles, after reaching Rivendell? I'm much more likely to keep up with it if there's some sort of goal attached besides the intangibles of better health, lower body fat percentage, etc. (Being naturally inclined, like Dorothy Parker, to respond to an urge to exercise by "lying down until it passes.")

A while back, someone proposed a "walk to Mordor," half facetiously, but perhaps if those of us who have struggled with *cough*weight issues*cough* for a long time arrived at Mt. Doom, we could throw some Thing that represented them into the fiery pit. (Virtually, of course--don't litter the national parks)

Around here, of course, the biggest obstacle to exercise after November is winter. People do not shovel their sidewalks, and the streets are just plain dangerous. Knowing myself, this means investing in a treadmill (then setting it up someplace it will be USED--not the basement, in other words).

(I hope the departure from strictly Middle earth discussion is permissible, Mr. Barrow-wight. If not, will cease and desist--please don't close the thread)

But they had not not gone very far before Pippin came running back followed by Merry. They both looked terrified.

"There are trolls!" Pippin panted. "Down in the clearing in the woods not far below. We got sight of them through the tree-trunks."

My goodness, Hilde, you have gone racing ahead!

"Pursuing her with weary feet..."

Although my recent milage slump is unsettling, still, a walk to Mount Doom sounds wonderful! I mean, er, well, you know. At least we'd see Lothlorien. And the Anduin. And Ithilien. And what a celebration when we finally arrive!

The grass under their feet was smooth and short, as if it had been mown or shaven. The eaves of the Forest behind were clipped, and trim as a hedge. The path was now plain before them, well-tended and bordered with stone.

Yah! Finally made it to Tom Bombadill's house. It's lovely weather so I think I will press on with another walk tonight. smilies/smile.gif

I really liked the Hobbit Walking Party. So cute!! I'll probably keep saying that even if it doesn't win! I guess that might be better, because then I'd have two to choose from. LOL!

Speaking of Hobbit Walking Parties, this one's getting so nice and busy! Hi everyone! (again)

Speaking of Milestones to Mordor, except for The Ring Goes South, won't it be easier to figure out milestones for the Walk to Mordor than it is between Bag-End and Rivendell? And we can all cook Rabbit Stew when we are in Ithilien. (If no rabbit available, chicken stew could be allowed.) Of course, the sad part is that our stop in Lorien will be all too brief. But then we get Lembas! Sigh... oh, to spend a month in Lorien for real...

Speaking of that, who is going to take a nice rest at Rivendell? Okay, not three months, but it does seem like we should celebrate somehow. Maybe everyone should visit their favorite uncle or aunt, whether blood-relative or adopted. I suppose since Frodo was also adopted that could also mean parents. So-- who's your Bilbo?

The results of the WtR motto contest are now posted on the Éowyn Challenge page (http://home.insightbb.com/~eowynchallenge/House_Contests/house_contests.html). Modesty prevents me from naming the winner, but I’m sure we’re all happy to have 100 points for the Barrow-Downs team!

(Oh, to Mordor with modesty!! *To the strains of “There She Is”, Estelyn clutches her crown, sobbing dramatically. She stammers thanks to all even remotely involved before realizing that this is not the parody RPG thread. Embarrassed, she slinks away silently… )

Arafangwen has been staying in a dorm for the past two weeks and was way too far away from both the dance building and the cafeteria.
Now south of the Road at 314 miles, and still trying too figure out the rest of her miles, Arafangwen stopped by the roadside for a well deserved two day rest while searching her bags for her calculator(so middle earth-ish, I know). On a sidenote, has anyone else noticed how close summer is to an end? It just began and it's almost over smilies/frown.gif . (sorry about the downer ending there guys)

Galenfea of Mirkwood.
07-20-2003, 06:25 AM
Galenfea turned from looking towards Hobbiton and considered the job in hand. Everyone else seemed to be well ahead of her, and she wasn't making good progress. She got out her map to plan the next stage of her journey, and sighed. "At this rate I'll never get to Rivendell! Never mind, if I try to get in a few miles daily I've got the summer to walk through." she tightened a strap on her rucksack and trampe on.

I started a little while ago, and am not making fast progress!

Aleia and the other hobbits felt very much alone; nobody was in sight in before them and nobody was in sight behind them. After passing Weathertop, they had had to put Frodo upon Bill's back. Aleia felt horrid, because they had only been doing about one mile per day. At this rate, Frodo would die before reaching Rivendell!

You are still south of the Road (300).
It is 11 miles to the next landmark. You still have 155 miles to Rivendell.
"Not once did they feel the sense of present evil that had assailed them before the attack in the dell."

Peony still felt flushed and warm at times while they walked, as though the fever was returning, but she said nothing to the others, and otherwise felt well. Strider looked up at the sky when they stopped for the night, and predicted rain for the next few days. The time seemed to be passing slowly, but they made good progress every day, and Rivendell grew closer. Frodo was hanging on, though he groaned with pain in his sleep.

It's so good to see others joining our walk! Welcome Sirithheruwen!

Arafangwen has taken less time than she imagined to calculate the remainder of her milage for the weeks and has discovered that she is now at another camp in the Trollshaws. Feeling as if the hills were closing in around her, Arafangwen suddenly wished that she had a companion to walk with her and began searching for one in the ever shortening distance of sight around her.

Estelyn Telcontar
07-21-2003, 11:32 AM
Estelyn turns around and, borrowing Merisuwyniel's sharp (and gorgeous! smilies/wink.gif ) Elven eyes, sees Arafangwen only a few miles behind her. She waves enthusiastically but, determined to get her next shield tomorrow, walks on briskly. Borrowing the Elven heroine's Osanwe abilities as well, she sends a message of welcome to Sirithheruwen. There's still plenty of time to make it to Rivendell or at least find a nice spot on the road to settle down.

We're finally on our way again. We've been beseiged by Black Riders at the Ranger camp for the past four days. Strider is not sure why, but they departed during the night and there was no sign of them in the area this morning. We decided to make a run for it, and hurriedly continued our journey.

--------------------

Still round the corner there may wait
A new road or a secret gate,
And though we pass them by today,
Tomorrow we may come this way
And take the hidden paths that run
Towards the Moon or to the Sun.

The weather has been simply outrageous! (Not a good time to be between 2 rivers I assure you.) Streets are so flooded in some areas the manhole covers are popping off. I suppose I could scale these here stone trolls if it gets too bad. And plenty more rain in the forcast. On the brighter side, I think that the Nazgul will get washed away long before I see them!

The weather has been gorgeous, but hot. Sunny skies as far as the eye can see, but Frodo is steadily worsening. Aleia and the hobbits have just passed the Great Road and are headed south. They are encouraged by the thought of less than 200 miles to go! Woo-hoo!

The skies remained overcast all day, but the rain only fell sporadically. Though we saw neither sight nor sound of Black Riders throughout the day, Strider continued to push us onward as fast as our tired legs would go.

--------------------

All that day they plodded along, until the cold and early evening came down. The land became drier and more barren...A few melancholy birds were piping and wailing, until the round red sun sank slowly into the western shadows; then an empty silence fell. The hobbits thought of the soft light of sunset glancing through the cheerful windows of Bag End far away.

At the end of the fifth day the ground began once more to rise slowly out of the wide shallow valley into which they had descended. Strider now turned their course again north-eastwards, and on the sixth day they reached the top of a long slow-climbing slope, and saw far ahead a huddle of wooded hills. Away below them they could see the Road sweeping round the feet of the hills; and to their right a grey river gleamed pale in the thin sunshine. In the distance they glimpsed yet another river in a stony valley half-veiled in mist.

Hurray for Esty! Congratulations on the win! To tell the truth I can't remember which mottos I voted for, excepting one... I should read them all and try to remember.

On vacation I walked 22 more mile, and I'm only 8 away from the 200 mile mark!

You have walked 192 miles.
You have passed the eastern edge of Chetwood Forest (180).
You are only 4 miles from the western edge of the Midgewater Marshes.
You still have 266 miles to Rivendell.

The next day they began to steer a steady course eastwards; and still all was quiet and peaceful. On the third day out from Bree they came out of the Chetwood. The land had been falling steadily, ever since they turned aside from the Road, and they now entered a wide flat expanse of country, much more difficult to manage. They were far beyond the borders of the Bree-land, out in the pathless wilderness, and drawing near to the Midge-water Marshes.

Peony is not certain whether her clothing is drenched with perspiration or rain. Either way, she feels as though she walked through steam baths this morning. [Hot, but less humid, in Raefindel's territory in the Northwest, is more to her taste] Peony plans to spend her time at Rivendell writing an account of her walk, for the benefit of her yet-unborn descendants. This will allow her alter ego to stay in training by "walking to Rivendell" again (at the present rate, should get there the first time in early September) with a new set of M-E characters! (and in the present season, rather than that of Tolkien's narrative)

My start from hobbiton was easier then I thought..it was strange because the halflings were almost used to seeing strange folk, when they saw me they nodded and pointed me in the correct direction and even gave me some provisons that I might need becaise of this horrible weather. It feels as if it mite rain any second but it wont and just stays humid and 90 degrees. After a mere 5 miles the heat is unbearable and decide to camp out for the night and get a fresh start tomorrow morning.

They stood for a while silent on the hill-top, near its southward edge. In that lonely place Frodo for the first time fully realized his homelessness and danger. "Certainly it reminds me very much of Bilbo in the last years, before he went away. He used often to say there was only one Road; that it was like a great river: its springs were at every doorstep, and every path was its tributary. 'It's a dangerous business, Frodo, going out of your door,' he used to say. 'You step into the Road, and if you don't keep your feet, there is no knowing where you might be swept off to. Do you realize that this is the very path that goes through Mirkwood, and that if you let it, it might take you to the Lonely Mountain or even further and to worse places?' He used to say that on the path outside the front door at Bag End, especially after he had been out for a long walk."

It seemed too much to hope that the Riders had already lost their trail again. Perhaps they were waiting to make some ambush in a narrow place?

The autumn days were ever shorter, and their marches ever longer. Peony had never before spent so much time in darkness. And although she half expected the dreadful Riders to re-appear at any moment, she also found herself drinking in the hush which descended upon the earth after the sun set, and anticipating starlight and moonlight more eagerly than she would have believed possible. Most curious of all, she had no trouble staying awake during the night watches--unlike her fellow hobbits, who sometimes required a gentle nudge to remain alert.

They spent a miserable day in this lonely and unpleasant country. Their camping-place was damp, cold, and uncomfortable; and the biting insects would not let them sleep. There were also abominable creatures haunting the reeds and tussocks that from the sound of them were evil relatives of the cricket. There were thousands of them, and they squeaked all round, neek-breek, breek-neek, unceasingly all the night, until the hobbits were nearly frantic.

The weather's been nasty, with the typhoon and all, and the a/c at work has just been working just fine---at the cost of my poor nose---caught a sore throat yesterday, and I feel really bad.

I haven't been walking lately, save for a mile on the elliptical, and a walk all around the mall with my brother last night.

And bit of confession: the family had a buffet dinner last night---one that crosses over three restaurants...I am gaining rotundity, but I've been having buttered hot corn *erp* and salad for lunch everyday (I skip rice as much as possible for lunch--we're Asian smilies/smile.gif)

But my goal on the elliptical is 5 miles a day...Weathertop, here I come.

Hello, Neferchoirwen! It seems we're stuck together, at least for a little while. I hope you don't mind?

You have walked 200 miles.
You have passed the western edge of the Midgewater Marshes (196).
You are only 1 miles from Neekerbreeker Pond.
You still have 258 miles to Rivendell.

The ground now became damp, and in places boggy and here and there they came upon pools, and wide stretches of reeds and rushes filled with the warbling of little hidden birds. They had to pick their way carefully to keep both dry-footed and on their proper course. At first they made fan-progress, but as they went on, their passage became slower and more dangerous. The marshes were bewildering and treacherous, and there was no permanent trail even for Rangers to find through their shifting quagmires. The flies began to torment them, and the air was full of clouds of tiny midges that crept up their sleeves and breeches and into their hair.

EDIT: Forgot to add that once again I'll be going through and creating an updated list, so if you don't have your mileage in your FROM: space please put it there so you can be counted in our list. Thank you!

Walking all through Tennesee, Arafangwen has found the three stone Trolls from Bilbo's adventure! This week has been an exciting one for the elf maiden, sleeping at the Hermitage after an exausting ten mile walk was probably the most memorable moment though.

I was thinking of you guys the whole time, mainly because I was completly surrounded by Peony plants, I'm sure you know where my mind trailed off to at that time....

Arafangwen peered ahead in the distance looking for Esty wondering where she should camp tonight.

Off to update my milage elsewhere....

Today was once again beautiful and managed to get 8 miles in. I did confront Legolas and we decided he would walk with me to keep me company. I non-chalontly asked him why he looked alittle miffed and indeed, gimli had stole his conditioner..very touchy elf but no doubt he is good company. Now I must help set up camp.

You have walked 20 miles.
You have passed Green Hill Country (18).
It is 7 miles to the next landmark.
You still have 438 miles to Rivendell.

Now I shall rest and regain my strength before attempting the long and dangerous journey to Mount Doom. smilies/eek.gif

Congratulations to Aerowen, the first Barrow-Downer to reach Rivendell!! You can see her name on the
Rivendell Page of the Éowyn Challenge site. A triple hurray for Aerowen!!

Thankee Esty and Horse-maiden :-)

Yes yes, I know I haven't posted in a near forever, but that doesn't matter. I always lurk.

Now, how did I do it, you may ask. Mostly walking or running, but some biking as well. I'm on the track and cross-country team at school and we were 'required' (more like asked, but if you wanted to get better, and stay in shape over the summer..) to run/jog/walk 6 miles for each sport (a total of 12 miles per day for myself) and in the end, it just all added up with the track meets we had, the training, the practices, etc. Plus, I was determined ;-)

Now, how that one Wizard person wants to walk 1000 miles, well, that's amazing. But now, I'm still running/walking/jogging...around a track, it seems. :-P

You have walked 535 miles.
You have reached Rivendell! (458)
You have been jogging around the Hidden Valley running track for 77 miles!

Frodo woke and found himself lying in bed. At first he thought that he had slept late, after a long unpleasant dream that still hovered on the edge of memory. Or perhaps he had been ill? But the ceiling looked strange; it was flat, and it had dark beams richly carved. He lay a little while longer looking at patches of sunlight on the wall, and listening to the sound of a waterfall.

Good luck to the rest of you! You still have 143 days left. If you're going to be like Esty and I (attempting to walk to Rivendell twice) you have to walk 916 miles. I'm 381 miles away from that, lol. It's possible, but hey.

And congrats on the Motto, Esty. Sorry I couldn't end up contributing. We're close on the House Contests, as well :-D

Once again, good luck and happy walking.

The dryer, cooler weather was very short-lived and the storms have returned to the Lone-lands. Strider says we will have to head back towards the Road soon, as we are getting close to the River Hoarwell, and we can only cross by the Last Bridge. We must be very wary, as the Black Riders may be waiting to ambush us there.

--------------------

"How far is Rivendell?" asked Merry, gazing round wearily. The world looked wild and wide from Weathertop.

"I don't know if the Road has ever been measured in miles beyond the 'Forsaken Inn', a day's journey east of Bree," answered Strider. "Some say it is so far, and some say otherwise. It is a strange road, and folk are glad to reach their journey's end, whether the time is long or short. But I know how long it would take me on my own feet, with fair weather and no ill fortune: twelve days from here to the Ford of Bruinen, where the Road crosses the Loudwater that runs out of Rivendell. We have at least a fortnight's journey before us, for I do not think we shall be able to use the Road."

"A fortnight!" said Frodo. "A lot may happen in that time."

"It may," said Strider.

The rain continued throughout the day, but we finally made it back onto the Road. All this mud makes for extremely difficult traveling conditions, but at least we don't have to worry about leaving tracks for the Black Riders to follow. We made camp about 300 yards south of the Road in a little hollow. Strider says 'no fire' tonight for fear of attracting the Riders. And of course...cram again!

--------------------

They were suddenly aware of great hunger, for they had not eaten anything since breakfast; but they dared not make more than a frugal supper. The lands ahead were empty of all save birds and beasts, unfriendly places deserted by all the races of the world. Rangers passed at times beyond the hills, but they were few and did not stay. Other wanderers were rare, and of evil sort: trolls might stray down at times out of the northern valleys of the Misty Mountains. Only on the Road would travellers be found, most often dwarves, hurrying along on business of their own, and with no help and few words to spare for strangers.

The weather has been nice the last couple of days, although it poured rain in buckets yesterday. Strider found a small bird with a broken leg, and decided to put it out of its misery. I felt sorry for the poor thing, put the little meat we got off of it was better than cram!
We reached the Last Bridge today, suprised that we saw no Riders. Strider made us sit in the bushes beside the bridge for what seemed forever, while he scouted ahead.
***
We have walked 348 miles.
We have reached The Last Bridge (348).
It is 6 miles to the next landmark.
We still have 110 miles to Rivendell.
***
They hurried along with all the speed they could make, and after a mile or two they saw the Last Bridge ahead, at the bottom of a short steep slope. They dreaded to see black figures waiting there, but they saw none. Strider made them take cover in a thicket at the side of the Road, while he went forward to explore.

A lot of people have been confused about the (## m.) next to their name on the update page. I was PMed about it, which gave me the chance to explain in full, and I'm going to paste that here, too, so no one will get confused.

This is the original, which I thought might explain well enough

Next to a walker's name you will see something looking like this: (## m.) That shows how many miles they have walked since our last update.

but it doesn't, so I've explained in more detail.

Both of them are miles.

The one immediately after your name is the total amount of miles you have walked (as found in the FROM: space).

The one in parantheses is how many miles you have walked since our last mileage update.

If I updated the list on July 11th and I had walked 160 miles then, and then on July 26th updated it again and had walked 200 miles by that time, it would have (40 m.) next to my name because that was how far I had walked since July 11th, our last update.

I don't know about everyone else, but having that next to my name really gives me a boost in walking. If I've gone quite awhile since our last update, I can feel encouraged and know I'm making it. If I've only gone a short way, I can wake up and say, "Oops, I need to get moving!"

But does that make sense now?

Linnamalle

What a cold, miserable night! No fire, no decent food, wet blankets...whose idea was this, anyway? The rain stopped just before dawn, but it remained very foggy and misty for most of the day. Strider kept stopping to listen for hoofbeats on the road (a very muddy procedure as he puts his ear to the ground each time), but there was neither sight nor sound of the Riders. We'll cross the Last Bridge tomorrow, and then it's back into the hills. I'm really getting hungry! I sure hope Elrond is planning a feast for us.

--------------------

"I don't see how our food can be made to last," said Frodo. "We have been careful enough in the last few days, and this supper is no feast; but we have used more than we ought, if we have two weeks still to go, and perhaps more."

"There is food in the wild," said Strider; "berry, root, and herb; and I have some skill as a hunter at need. You need not be afraid of starving before winter comes. But gathering and catching food is long and weary work, and we need haste. So tighten your belts, and think with hope of the tables of Elrond's house!"

It's quite pleasant outside, and we're getting in more miles that originally thought. Strider tells us to jump into the bushes every five minutes to check for Riders, but he never hears anything. I really think that they've given up following us....
We reached the eerie Trollshaws early this morning, and we camped for anout an hour before moving on.
***
We have walked 354 miles.
We have reached the first camp in the Trollshaws (354).
It is 5 miles to the next landmark.
We still have 104 miles to Rivendell.
***
At once they went on again. They crossed the Bridge in safety, hearing no sound but the water swirling against its three great arches. A mile further on they came to a narrow ravine that led away northwards through the steep lands on the left of the Road. Here Strider turned aside, and soon they were lost in a sombre country of dark trees winding among the feet of sullen hills.

"At the end of the fifth day the ground began once more to rise slowly out of the wide shallow valley into which they had descended."

Peony could scarcely believe they had come so far in so short a time. But then, less than two months before, she had been helping to pack up Bag End and hatching her own plans. She would never have believed she would now be making her way to Rivendell on foot, pursued by the Enemy.

We crossed the Last Bridge this morning. With all the rain lately, the river was so high that the water was almost to the surface of the Bridge. No sign of the Black Riders, but Strider doesn't think that they have stopped searching for us. Someone dropped a beautiful green beryl in the middle of the Bridge...I put it in my pocket with that gold ring I found several weeks ago. (Elves love jewelry, you know!) After crossing the Bridge, we headed back into the Hills. Although we're still eating cram, at least we can have a fire tonight.

--------------------

They hurried along with all the speed they could make, and after a mile or two they saw the Last Bridge ahead, at the bottom of a short steep slope. They dreaded to see black figures waiting there, but they saw none. Strider made them take cover in a thicket at the side of the Road, while he went forward to explore.

Before long he came hurrying back. "I can see no sign of the enemy," he said, "and I wonder very much what that means. But I have found something very strange."

He held out his hand, and showed a single pale-green jewel. "I found it in the mud in the middle of the Bridge," he said. "It is a beryl, an elf-stone. Whether it was set there, or let fall by chance, I cannot say; but it brings hope to me. I will take it as a sign that we may pass the Bridge; but beyond that I dare not keep to the Road, without some clearer token."

Is that the Great East Road I see? Yes! What a welcome sight that is after all these swamps and mountains!

Great Iluvitar, I hear something! I think I'm being persued, a horse is approaching! I'll just hide behind this tree.

That's no Black Rider I hear, there are bells on the harness. And I feel a sudden lightness of heart. Anticipation fills the air. As the rider approaches I recognize him-It's Glorfindel! Good to see you! Glad to have you join me on the final leg of this journey.

Tell me, my friend, are they planning a great feast to celebrate the arrival of all these valiant and dedicated walkers?

What an dreary and depressing land this is! Strider led us along paths that went constantly up and down hill, through forests of dark trees. There were ruins on some of the hilltops, and I found myself constantly looking over my shoulder. It felt as if unfriendly eyes were watching us. We made camp this afternoon in a sheltered dell with a small stream, and although we tried all evening, we caught no fish. I believe this constant diet of cram is becoming detrimental to my luminous Elvish complexion.

--------------------

The hobbits were glad to leave the cheerless lands and the perilous Road behind them; but this new country seemed threatening and unfriendly. As they went forward the hills about them steadily rose. Here and there upon heights and ridges they caught glimpses of ancient walls of stone, and the ruins of towers: they had an ominous look.

"Strider now turned their course again north-eastwards, and on the sixth day they reached the top of a long slow-climbing slope, and saw far ahead a huddle of wooded hills."

Peony didn't even ask Strider this time if Rivendell lay somewhere amongst those hills they could glimpse. He always answered patiently, but she didn't really want to know how far they still had to go.

But Sam whispered to her: "Only a bit over a hundred miles now, and we've come over three hundred already from Hobbiton."

"How is Frodo hanging on?" she asked.

"He's hanging on," Sam answered, sounding sure but looking less so.

The sun finally showed her face today, and we were mighty glad to see her at first. But it quickly grew so hot that by the afternoon we started longing for some cloud cover. Strider says that no one lives in these lands any longer, and it appears empty and forsaken. We have seen no sign of Black Riders, but the feeling of being watched continues to grow.

--------------------

Frodo, who was not walking, had time to gaze ahead and to think. He recalled Bilbo's account of his journey and the threatening towers on the hills north of the Road, in the country near the Troll's wood where his first serious adventure had happened. Frodo guessed that they were now in the same region, and wondered if by chance they would pass near the spot.

"Who lives in this land?" he asked. "And who built these towers? Is this troll-country?"

"No!" said Strider. "Trolls do not build. No one lives in this land. Men once dwelt here, ages ago; but none remain now. They became an evil people, as legends tell, for they fell under the shadow of Angmar. But all were destroyed in the war that brought the North Kingdom to its end. But that is now so long ago that the hills have forgotten them, though a shadow still lies on the land."

Raefindel,

Tea sounds great to me! I take sugar, and... er... soymilk. It's hard to find in Middle-Earth. Perhaps I should have peppermint tea instead and then I won't need anything to lighten it...

Glorfindel, I don't suppose you could tell me a good place to find soymilk around here? No? I was afraid not. Well, on second thought, how about just telling me where to get those silver bells on Asfaloth's headstall? They sound so cheerful. Perhaps a pair of earrings...

Ah, thanks, Raefindel. (Takes cup of peppermint tea with contented sigh, peers at Frodo) Hmmm, looks like he needs more than peppermint.

Why thank you, Rae! I'd love some tea, green tea, if possible. Linnamalle's peppermint tea reminds me of a restaurant in which I once ordered green tea and was brought peppermint. Apparently, they thought that peppermint is green, so that must have been what I wanted!! smilies/biggrin.gif

I've slowed down my walking pace a bit during these hot summer days; neither the dog nor I feel like walking at noon, so we skip that one and stay in the shade of the back yard during the hottest time of the day. Nevertheless, it should be no problem to reach Rivendell within this month. After that - does anyone know how far it is to Lothlorien?? Maybe I can reach it by the end of the year...

I'm back... Well, you probably wouldn't notice if I totally dissapeared. I trully am a loner, aren't I? I suppose my subconcious likes like this... a shadow among the Barrowdowns.
Raindrop tears on the leaves... Summerevening's air... They say the road is more important than the destination and it is true. I'm no longer upset to be left behind. Summer is my world, my birthday is approaching and I don't want my journey through Middle Earth to end... never ever end!
It seems the landscape alaways gets the best of me... I'm lost... Can anyone tell me where I am at 233 miles?

Tefalathiel, go here (http://www.barrowdowns.com/walktorivendell.asp?Size=) and type in your miles, and you will see! No need to be lonely-- with this many people on the trail, somebodys bound to be near you. Check that lovely milage listing that Nurumaiel keeps updating so faithfully! And then scan the horizon!

Once again I'll be going through the 9 pages (:eek smilies/smile.gif of this thread and updating the mileage list. And guess who's only going to have 7 miles next to their total mileage? smilies/biggrin.gif

If you don't have your mileage in your FROM: space, please put it there if you don't wish to be overlooked in our list. You can do this by hitting the 'My Profile' link near the top of the screen. You'll got to your profile where you list of private messages etc. are, and you'll find a link that says 'View/Update Profile.' Click on it, and then you can put your mileage in your FROM: space.

I'll try to get the newest walkers who don't have their mileage in their FROM: space, but I won't guarantee anything.

Thanks!

Estelyn: Well, if I added the mileage from my Atlas correctly, it's 285 miles from Rivendell to Lórien; 393 miles from Lórien to Rauros; and 470 miles from Rauros to Mt. Doom. It's a total of 1,606 miles from Bag End to Mt. Doom. I think I can make it to Lórien by the time RotK opens. smilies/tongue.gif

It was quite hot again today. The heat and humidity made us long for the rain and cooler weather to return. The silence of the land and the increasing feeling of watchfulness is beginning to affect the spirits of our company. By day, we walk without speaking, and at night are too weary for tales or songs. I have always enjoyed solitude and the quiet of nature, but I find myself longing for Rivendell, and the singing and storytelling (and the feasting) that is so much a part of Elrond's House.

--------------------

"Where did you learn such tales, if all the land is empty and forgetful?" asked Peregrin. "The birds and beasts do not tell tales of that sort."

"The heirs of Elendil do not forget all things past," said Strider; "and many more things than I can tell are remembered in Rivendell."

"Have you often been to Rivendell?" said Frodo.

"I have," said Strider. "I dwelt there once, and still I return when I may. There my heart is; but it is not my fate to sit in peace, even in the fair house of Elrond."

Gorwingel, congratulations! Don't forget to update your mileage on the Éowyn site and drop them a note to let them know of your arrival. (The link to the page for those who have arrived in Rivendell is in one of my above posts.)

Alatáriël, thanks for that information! I will gladly stretch the challenge to include a walk to Lothlórien; that should be doable before the RotK movie release date.

Edit: I see here (http://home.insightbb.com/~eowyn2challenge/Rivendell_Page.html) that Vardamar has also reached Rivendell, without telling us about it! Congratulations to you too!

It looks like four Barrow-Downers are currently relaxing in Rivendell: Aerowen, Linzielf, Vardamar & Gorwingel. Congratulations to all of you!

When you reach Rivendell, if you've reported regularly to the Éowyn Challenge milestones page, you can have that accomplishment listed here (http://home.insightbb.com/~eowyn2challenge/Rivendell_Page.html). Please send an E-mail to kallycarey@insightbb.com to let them know about it.

I thought I'd bring Estelyn's post forward for all those who are getting close. smilies/tongue.gif

Strider is pushing us to travel as fast as we can. We still have 85 miles to go in the next 22 days. If I didn't trust his Ranger skills so much, I would think that we were traveling in circles. The countryside today looks the same as it did yesterday, and the day before, and the day before that...

--------------------

The hills now began to shut them in. The Road behind held on its way to the River Bruinen, but both were now hidden from view. The travellers came into a long valley; narrow, deeply cloven, dark and silent. Trees with old and twisted roots hung over cliffs, and piled up behind into mounting slopes of pine-wood.

The hobbits grew very weary. They advanced slowly, for they had to pick their way through a pathless country, encumbered by fallen trees and tumbled rocks. As long as they could they avoided climbing for Frodo's sake, and because it was in fact difficult to find any way up out of the narrow dales.

Welcome, elfearz1! Of course you can join, no matter how late you are. I was also late, though only by about 10 - 15 days. smilies/biggrin.gif

How glad I was to say goodbye to the Midgewater Marshes! And how exciting it is to find I've only 240 miles left to go. I was able to ride today without feeling very ahead of myself now that I've passed Bree. Only I wasn't riding a pony, I was riding a Quarter Horse... oopsies. But I used my imagination, and she was similiar to Bill, even if she wasn't as short.

You have walked 218 miles.
You have passed the eastern edge of the Midgewater Marshes (211).
It is 10 miles to the next landmark.
You still have 240 miles to Rivendell.

They had not gone far on the fifth day when they left the last straggling pools and reed-beds of the marshes behind them. The land before them began steadily to rise again. Away in the distance eastward they could now see a line of hills. The highest of them was at the right of the line and a little separated from the others. It had a conical top, slightly flattened at the summit.

'That is Weathertop,' said Strider. 'The Old Road, which we have left far away on our right, runs to the south of it and passes not far from its foot. We might reach it by noon tomorrow, if we go straight towards it. I suppose we had better do so.'

Alatáriël Lossëhelin

The clouds and rain returned this morning before sunrise, and there was a steady drizzle all day. We clambered up and down the slick, rocky hillsides with many a slip and slide. We were all covered in mud by the time we made camp. Strider found a shallow cave, and with the fire, we are able to 'enjoy' our cram and stay moderately dry.

--------------------

They had been two days in this country when the weather turned wet. The wind began to blow steadily out of the West and pour the water of the distant seas on the dark heads of the hills in fine drenching rain. By nightfall they were all soaked, and their camp was cheerless, for they could not get any fire to burn. The next day the hills rose still higher and steeper before them, and they were forced to turn away northwards out of their course. Strider seemed to be getting anxious: they were nearly ten days out from Weathertop, and their stock of provisions was beginning to run low. It went on raining.

That night they camped on a stony shelf with a rock-wall behind them, in which there was a shallow cave, a mere scoop in the cliff. Frodo was restless. The cold and wet had made his wound more painful than ever, and the ache and sense of deadly chill took away all sleep. He lay tossing and turning and listening fearfully to the stealthy night-noises: wind in chinks of rock, water dripping, a crack, the sudden rattling fall of a loosened stone.

Why Thank you, Nurumaiel!

Although her visit had been short she was beginning to fancy the Shire. Its inhabitant's quaint and sheltered life style seemed so innocent and lovely to her. She takes one last look at this friendly little place, then turns and trudges on; somewhat sad to leave this warm and comfortable region, but also glad for what adventures may lie ahead.

You have walked 7 miles.
You have reached Last View of Hobbiton (7).
It is 11 miles to the next landmark.
You still have 451 miles to Rivendell.

--------------------------------------------
As they began to climb its first slopes they looked back and saw the lamps in Hobbiton far off twinkling in the gentle valley of the Water. Soon it disappeared in the folds of the darkened land, and was followed by Bywater beside its grey pool. When the light of the last farm was far behind, peeping among the trees, Frodo turned and waved a hand in farewell.

"I am afraid we must go back to the Road here for a while," said Strider.

And then Pippin had asked the question Peony had been longing to, about what rivers they were seeing. The River that they could just glimpse, far off in the distance, ran into the valley of Rivendell!

They started off again early the next morning, and would reach the Last Bridge in a few more miles. Even though Strider was afraid they would encounter the Enemy there, Peony felt sure he would guide them safely over it, somehow.

elfearz1: I think you've got the hang of this...

______________________________

When dawn came today, we were able to see the sun rising from the clouds over the mountains. We scrambled among the rocks and hills until we were near to exhaustion. The last climb was so steep that we were crawling more than walking, using our hands and arms to pull ourselves up. Our camp tonight is in an old quarry, and we are glad of our fire. The wind is from the north, and seems to blow right through our cloaks and blankets, chilling us to the bone.

--------------------

The rest of that day they spent scrambling over rocky ground...but towards the end of the day they found their road again barred by a ridge of high land...They had a choice between going back or climbing over it. They decided to attempt the climb, but it proved very difficult...The light was nearly gone, and they were all exhausted, when at last they reached the top...Night was cold up on the high ridge. They lit a small fire down under the gnarled roots of an old pine, that hung over a shallow pit: it looked as if stone had once been quarried there. They sat huddled together. The wind blew chill through the pass, and they heard the tree-tops lower down moaning and sighing.

We have gone far off our course in trying to escape from the Riders. We must now head southwards towards the Road or we shall have no hope of crossing the River. We came across a path that led downhill and discovered an abandoned troll-cave. Farther down we found William, Tom & Bert in a small clearing. I'll have to apologize to Bilbo when I get to Rivendell. I've heard him tell that story many times, and I always thought he was making it up.

--------------------

There stood the trolls: three large trolls...Strider walked forward unconcernedly. "Get up, old stone!" he said, and broke his stick upon the stooping troll.

Nothing happened. There was a gasp of astonishment from the hobbits, and then even Frodo laughed. "Well!" he said. "We are forgetting our family history! These must be the very three that were caught by Gandalf, quarrelling over the right way to cook thirteen dwarves and one hobbit."

"I had no idea we were anywhere near the place!" said Pippin. He knew the story well. Bilbo and Frodo had told it often; but as a matter of fact he had never more than half believed it...They all laughed. Frodo felt his spirits reviving: the reminder of Bilbo's first successful adventure was heartening.

Just after setting out on the road to the Last Bridge, the party of travelers was delayed by a thunderstorm, accompanied by torrents of rain. Water streamed downhill and washed across the Road in low places. They took what shelter they could in the lee of a large boulder nearby. Luckily, the storm passed quickly, and they were able to take to the Road once more.

Galenfea sticks her head up over the root and yells, "How dare you enter the king's bedroom when he's disscussing foreign policy?! smilies/mad.gif" She then establishes that she is shouting at Gildor Inglorion and his companions. She apologises for losing her temper and asks if there are any other walkers in the vicinity. He replied that the last two had passed through about a week before.

Seeing the trolls really lightened our spirits, and we walked for several miles at good speed. We hurried along the Road for the rest of the day until the light faded. We were looking for a campsite where we could be out of sight, when we heard a sound we had been dreading...hoofbeats behind us! As the rider came around the bend, I recognized my friend, Glorfindel. It was a merry meeting, as it appears Strider knows him as well. We traveled a few miles further on, before stopping for the night.

--------------------

His speech and clear ringing voice left no doubt in their hearts: the rider was of the Elven-folk..."Hail, and well met at last!" said the Elf-lord to Frodo. "I was sent from Rivendell to look for you. We feared that you were in danger upon the road."...While Glorfindel was speaking the shades of evening deepened..."You shall ride my horse," said Glorfindel..."if danger presses too near, he will bear you away with a speed that even the black steeds of the enemy cannot rival."

"No, he will not!" said Frodo. "I shall not ride him, if I am to be carried off to Rivendell or anywhere else, leaving my friends behind in danger."

Glorfindel smiled. "I doubt very much," he said, "if your friends would be in danger if you were not with them! The pursuit would follow you and leave us in peace, I think. It is you, Frodo, and that which you bear that brings us all in peril."

I'd like to greet my fellow walkers, but I'm too far behind them! Since they were all hobbits, and were trying to be silent, they made no noise that even hobbits would hear. That doesn't apply to me. Glorfindel says he has been searching for us for over a week. He came across several Riders a couple of days ago, and they were following our trail. He and Strider push us along as fast as our weary feet can go. We'd be able to go a lot faster if the 'Glorified One' had brought more than one horse with him.

--------------------

Frodo...was persuaded to mount Glorfindel's white horse. The pony was laden with a great part of the others' burdens, so that they now marched lighter, and for a time made good speed; but the hobbits began to find it hard to keep up with the swift tireless feet of the Elf. On he led them, into the mouth of darkness, and still on under the deep clouded night. There was neither star nor moon. Not until the grey of dawn did he allow them to halt. Pippin, Merry, and Sam were by that time nearly asleep on their stumbling legs; and even Strider seemed by the sag of his shoulders to be weary. Frodo sat upon the horse in a dark dream.

You have passed Neekerbreeker Pond (201).
You are only 5 miles from the eastern edge of the Midgewater Marshes.

You have walked 228 miles.
You have reached a small stream coming down from the Weather Hills (228).
It is 18 miles to the next landmark.
You still have 230 miles to Rivendell.

The hills drew nearer. They made an undulating ridge, often rising almost to a thousand feet, and here and there falling again to low clefts or passes leading into the eastern land beyond. Along the crest of the ridge the hobbits could see what looked to be the remains of green-grown walls and dikes, and in the clefts there still stood the ruins of old works of stone. By night they had reached the feet of the westward slopes, and there they camped. It was the night of the fifth of October, and they were six days out from Bree.

We had rested for only a few hours last night when a terrific thunderstorm came up out of the East. We were quickly drenched and unable to sleep for the rest of the night. The rains continued all day, and the mud made walking wearisome. Strider and Glorfindel fear the Riders will catch us before we can reach the Ford, but we are unable to travel faster.

--------------------

The leaves blew upwards in sudden gusts of wind, and spots of rain began to fall from the overcast sky. Then the wind died away and the rain came streaming down. They trudged along as fast as they could, over patches of grass and through thick drifts of old leaves; and all about them the rain pattered and trickled. They did not talk, but kept glancing back, and from side to side.

They hurried along with all the speed they could make, and after a mile or two they saw the Last Bridge ahead, at the bottom of a short steep slope. They dreaded to see black figures waiting there, but they saw none. Strider made them take cover in a thicket at the side of the Road, while he went forward to explore.
Peony's alter ego is slogging along as early in the day as she can drag herself out of bed, to escape the worst of the steam wave hovering over New England. However, it could be worse..this could be London at 100 degrees F. Talk about Mordor!!!!!!!

Last night we made camp under an enormous oak tree, which kept off the worst of the rain. The wood was so wet that the fire burned only fitfully, and with more smoke than flame. We sat huddled in our cloaks and blankets around the small fire, silent with our own thoughts and fears, until sleep overcame us. My dreams were troubled, and I awoke in the night with pounding heart. In the darkness, I heard the gentle voice of Glorfindel singing softly. My fears disappeared, and in the dawn I arose with a lighter heart to a clear and bright day.

--------------------

Snow-white! Snow-white! O Lady clear!
O Queen beyond the Western Seas!
O Light to us that wander here
Amid the world of woven trees!

Gilthoniel! O Elbereth!
Clear are thy eyes and bright thy breath!
Snow-white! Snow-white! We sing to thee
In a far land beyond the Sea.

O stars that in the Sunless Year
With shining hand by her were sown,
In windy fields now bright and clear
We see your silver blossom blown!

O Elbereth! Gilthoniel!
We still remember, we who dwell
In this far land beneath the trees,
Thy starlight on the Western Seas.

Here's an important announcement to all Walkers to Rivendell: The Third House Contest has begun!

Enter your LOTR comic short story. All stories must be in the LOTR framework, be 2,000 words or less, and be submitted by 8/24/03.
Please see the House Contest (http://home.insightbb.com/~eowynchallenge/House_Contests/house_contests.html) page on the Éowyn Challenge site for more information. I hope that there will be at least several of us taking part - we do want to get those points that are given for participating, no matter whether we win or not.

The rain has stopped, and we are able to travel more quickly, but not quick enough for Glorfindel. The hobbits are exhausted, Strider stumbles with fatigue, and even I, Elf of many journeys, am feeling very weary. We have seen no sign of the Riders, and we fear they may be lying in wait for us at the Ford of Bruinen.

--------------------

They cast themselves down in the heather a few yards from the road-side, and fell asleep immediately. They seemed hardly to have closed their eyes when Glorfindel, who had set himself to watch while they slept, awoke them again. The sun had now climbed far into the morning, and the clouds and mists of the night were gone.

"Drink this!" said Glorfindel to them, pouring for each in turn a little liquor from his silver-studded flask of leather. It was clear as spring water and had no taste, and it did not feel either cool or warm in the mouth; but strength and vigour seemed to flow into all their limbs as they drank it. Eaten after that draught the stale bread and dried fruit (which was now all that they had left) seemed to satisfy their hunger better than many a good breakfast in the Shire had done.

I was looking at the Eowyn Site and now it appears as though The Barrow Downs is not listed in the community area. Is there a reason for this? Or is it an oversite? smilies/eek.gif

As far as I can see, we're listed as always. A shield has not yet been made for us... smilies/frown.gif If there's a page that does not include us, please let me know which one it is so that I can check with the Éowyn site to correct that.

The days of our journey begin to blur one into another. At dawn, we arise and break our fast with cram and water. We march until mid-day, when we halt briefly to rest and partake of more cram and water. We then continue marching until the day wanes, at which time we make camp, and end the day...with yet more cram and water. I begin to dream of the laden tables of Rivendell even during waking hours. Glorfindel has promised us a magnificent feast upon our arrival, and the hobbits will hold him to that promise.

--------------------

...days passed, without the ground or the scene changing much...they saw nothing, and heard no sound but the sigh of withered leaves and grass...Glorfindel still urged them on, and only allowed two brief halts during the day's march...So far there had been no sign or sound of pursuit that the hobbits could see or hear...

Well, I was away at camp for two weeks, but that didn't mean I quit walking! I am now at 323 miles, and I am fully determined to get to Rivendell. Hoo...but there's a heatwave, and heat makes me not want to walk! Noo!

Well now, the river didn't do anything special when I crossed it! Hmmm... I can't imagine why.

I arrive amidst a torrential rain storm, but I am welcomed by all the folk of Rivendell. After a bath & a rest I am given a wonderful dinner. Not a feast though. Elrond explains that the feast will be held when more adventurers have arrived.

I slept 14 hours and woke to a beautiful day. Before breakfast I go for... a walk...only this time I'm holding my coffee cup... and my coffee has Elven Cream in it.

Happy Adventures, fellow walkers. I'm waiting for you.

We are getting close to the Ford. Glorfindel and Strider are getting more and more anxious. They fear the Riders are close and will not allow a fire tonight. The River will protect us once we are safely across, but until then our peril will continue to increase.

--------------------

..often Glorfindel would halt and listen for a moment, if they lagged behind, and a look of anxiety clouded his face. Once or twice he spoke to Strider in the elf-tongue.

But however anxious their guides might be, it was plain that the hobbits could go no further that night. They were stumbling along dizzy with weariness, and unable to think of anything but their feet and legs...The hobbits were still weary, when they set out again early next morning...and they hobbled forward at the best pace they could manage.

"Our peril will be greatest just ere we reach the river," said Glorfindel; "for my heart warns me that the pursuit is now swift behind us, and other danger may be waiting by the Ford."

You have walked 218 miles.
You have passed the eastern edge of the Midgewater Marshes (211).
It is 10 miles to the next landmark.
You still have 240 miles to Rivendell.

********************************************

They had not gone far on the fifth day when they left the last straggling pools and reed-beds of the marshes behind them. The land before them began steadily to rise again. Away in the distance eastward they could now see a line of hills. The highest of them was at the right of the line and a little separated from the others. It had a conical top, slightly flattened at the summit.
'That is Weathertop,' said Strider. 'The Old Road, which we have left far away on our right, runs to the south of it and passes not far from its foot. We might reach it by noon tomorrow, if we go straight towards it. I suppose we had better do so.'

********************************************

Well, Strider is certainly in a hurry. That's alright, because my job requires much walking and I bought a pedometer. (I walk about 2.5 miles at work every night and that is in addition to any walking I do purely for the challenge.)

Oh, the midges! They like human as well as they like hobbit! They certainly enjoy eating me alive.

It was as Glorfindel feared...the Riders were lying in wait for us at the Ford. Frodo and the other hobbits were able to cross the River before the Riders attacked. When the first of the Riders hit the water though, the River rose up into a flood and overwhelmed them. Amazing!! Arwen wasn't even there to chant her invocation. The rest of us crossed after the water subsided, and we traveled a couple of miles further on before making camp. For the first night since we left Tom's, we are able to rest without fear of pursuit.

--------------------

At that moment there came a roaring and a rushing: a noise of loud waters rolling many stones. Dimly Frodo saw the river below him rise, and down along its course there came a plumed cavalry of waves. White flames seemed to Frodo to flicker on their crests and he half fancied that he saw amid the water white riders upon white horses with frothing manes. The three Riders that were still in the midst of the Ford were overwhelmed: they disappeared, buried suddenly under angry foam. Those that were behind drew back in dismay.

With his last failing senses Frodo heard cries, and it seemed to him that he saw, beyond the Riders that hesitated on the shore, a shining figure of white light; and behind it ran small shadowy forms waving flames, that flared red in the grey mist that was falling over the world.

The black horses were filled with madness, and leaping forward in terror they bore their riders into the rushing flood. Their piercing cries were drowned in the roaring of the river as it carried them away. Then Frodo felt himself falling, and the roaring and confusion seemed to rise and engulf him together with his enemies. He heard and saw no more.

Estelyn: I haven't had a chance to go over and check out the requirements, yet. Hi, y'all! I've never posted on this thread before, but I learned of the story contest on irc this late eve, early morning, thanks to Pyroclastic! I can't resist contests, but I haven't really kept up with mileage or anything, so I can't really say I'm really walking to Rivendell or am on a house team or anything like that. Is there any way I can retroactively add up all the walking I do around here and estimate? smilies/wink.gif And about that story contest, it sounds pretty open ended in theme, so I constructed the best comic story I could do for 2:30 a.m. and finished it. It is truly awful. Should I still try to enter it? Do they take points away for truly bad story entries? This one is truly unpolished!

Cheers,

Thanks, Esty, a congratulations on making it to Rivendell! I'm WAY behind you, but perhaps I'll walk along with Naz and Pyroclastic! smilies/smile.gif I looked on the Eowyn page, but I don't see a registration page, except for the join this mailing list or that links and an email for the Eowyn Challenge webmaster. Am I looking in the wrong place? UPDATE: I think I found it! I entered my measly 20 miles, but plan to try the 3 mi. winding gravel road later today, there and back. Wish me luck!

OK, as for mileage, here's my odd guess (I've walked around about a mile path on my land 10-12 times over a month and traipsed down to the other bldg and bridge on our land (wistfully called the Brandywine Bridge by me!) countless times, about 1/4 mi. round trip, so estimate 10 miles of that.) So, 20 miles it is! I think I'll try level ground next--easier on the back! And the ticks out here are as big as the Spiders of Mirkwood!

You have walked 20 miles.
You have passed Green Hill Country (18).
It is 7 miles to the next landmark.
You still have 438 miles to Rivendell.

After some time they crossed the Water, west of Hobbiton, by a narrow plank-bridge. The stream was there no more than a winding black ribbon, bordered with leaning alder-trees. A mile or two further south they hastily crossed the great road from the Brandywine Bridge; they were now in the Tookland and bending south-eastwards they made for the Green Hill Country.

Cheers,
Lyta

P.S. Anecdote from the road: There is a VERY shady spot on this trail that gave me the exact feeling of Pippin in the forest past Buckland (the "just let me pass!" feeling of living trees watching me a little too closely.) Weird, but I'm going back soon! Maybe I can take pictures!

I have now walked 249 miles, and getting closer.. The journey is long, but pleasant, with very little disturbance (such as Black Riders, evil trees and Barrow Wights..) I feel very motivated! *smiles*
I thought I would have much less time to walk now when school has started (19th), but realised it isn´t so; I will still walk, or bike, about 20-25 miles a week, but save most of it for the weekends. Dad and I often go out for a walk (or, as today, mushroom-picking) in the woods, and I mostly have my bike rides in the evenings, at 10 or 11, when it´s getting dark.

And, can anyone tell me where I am on my way? I don´t know where to find the place where you could check.

EDIT: Hmm...the Weather Hills. Interesting, and near to Weathertop. I am getting closer...*smiles*

"In the morning they found, for the first time since they had left the Chetwood, a track plain to see. They turned right and followed it southwards. It ran cunningly, taking a line that seemed chosen so as to keep as much hidden as possible from the view, both of the hill-tops above and of the flats to the west. It dived into dells, and hugged steep banks; and where it passed over flatter and more open ground on either side of it there were lines of large boulders and hewn stones that screened the travellers almost like a hedge."

--------------------

The Elves all burst into song. Suddenly under the trees a fire sprang up with a red light. "Come!" the Elves called to the hobbits. "Come! Now is the time for speech and merriment!" Pippin sat up and rubbed his eyes. He shivered. "There is a fire in the hall, and food for hungry guests," said an Elf standing before him.

...upon the tree-pillars torches with lights of gold and silver were burning steadily. The Elves sat round the fire upon the grass or upon the sawn rings of old trunks. Some went to and fro bearing cups and pouring drink; others brought food on heaped plates and dishes. "This is poor fare," they said to the hobbits; "for we are lodging in the greenwood far from our halls. If ever you are our guests at home, we will treat you better."

Same here, Rae. I had a walking companion for about twelve miles but now it's just me and the dog.

Well, here I am at the Weather Hills. Look, it's not even close to October! I have plenty of time. smilies/wink.gif

I've been slacking off recently. First I got a terrible blister; while clambering up rocks after Aragorn I twisted my ankle; after that was healed and he suggested walking four miles, but my foot started hurting again after 1/5 of the first mile and we realized it wasn't fully healed; and finally it's the walking song. I keep trying to sing some jolly hobbit song, but nothing ever comes to my lips but The Fields of Athenry (I'm trying to make up my mind whether I love or hate that song), and then I want to sit down and cry. I did once, but fortunately Aragorn didn't see me. Though I'm sure he would have understood.

Aragorn absolutely insists on walking a few miles today. He says if we find that my poor ankle is still a bit sore still, we'll take it a bit easy. But still, we're walking. As long as my foot holds out, I say hurrah to that. If only Aragorn could stand behind me with a whip (and gag me so I couldn't sing that song), then we could get to mile 270 today, or farther.

Congratulations Estelyn and Hilde! Sadly I won't be joining you before the Two Towers video & DVD release. If I did, I think everyone would be very impressed. smilies/wink.gif smilies/biggrin.gif

Thank heavens, it didn't rain, it's actually a rather lovely day. And I was able to put in a good long walk. So-- here I am at the fords at last! I am weary, but so far I haven't passed out. Now to get to Rivendell. Twenty miles to go! I'm coming....

Nurumaiel, I'm sorry about your injury! I do hope you are fully sound, soon.

I know what you mean about the walking song. I wish I could write one, too. Hmmm, maybe we should pray for inspiration.

Everyone's in higer spirits now that we're only three miles from Rivendell. That strange 'barbeque' thing we had for lunch was very spicy, but left a wonderful taste in my mouth.
Strider said we may walk more later, and might be able to see Rivendell on the horizon.

Wooohooo!! Rivendell at last...and in time for dinner! It's just as beautiful here as I remembered. There were many times on the Road that I despaired of ever reaching The Last Homely House. Tomorrow I'll be taking it easy and watching TTT with Elladan and Elrohir.

Linnamalle, I can see you coming! **waves madly** Elrond says there will be a feast this weekend...hope you can make it. smilies/tongue.gif

"..it seems impossible, somehow, to feel gloomy or depressed in this place. I feel I could sing, if I knew the right song for the occasion."

"I feel like singing myself," laughed Frodo. "Though at the moment I feel more like eating and drinking!"

"That will soon be cured," said Pippin. "You have shown your usual cunning in getting up just in time for a meal."

"More than a meal! A feast!" said Merry. "As soon as Gandalf reported that you were recovered, the preparations began." He had hardly finished speaking when they were summoned to the hall by the ringing of many bells.

Hi, all y'all folks who are SOOOOOOOO far ahead of me! I can sympathize and empathize with your injury woes, Nurumaiel! I have only done a paltry 31 miles, and already the question of good walking shoes has arisen anew. I never even thought about it until I realized that my feet were falling off when I wasn't even tired yet! I've been trying to walk a little farther every day and today I made it for 4.5 miles (including 3 circuits of an old cemetery I like to call the Barrowdowns!). I have an awful set of matching blisters on the outside of both big toes and I think my shoes will not do for this challenge!

If it isn't replicating earlier discussion, can anyone tell me what shoes/boots they use to walk for this endeavor? Especially those of you who have been at it awhile! I have a pair of Doc Martens boots, but haven't worn them in awhile. Would they be better than my no-name walking tennis shoes? Or something different? If this is a rehash, feel free to PM me with your ideas on this so it doesn't clog the thread!

Oh, and BTW, I've made it to the Black Rider Stopping Place! I don't think I'll take my shoes off at this particular landmark! (being vewy vewy quiet....)

Cheers,
Lyta

P.S. I'm REAL glad I didn't start on Sept. 22 like I had thought to do at first! I'm going to have a hard enough time making it there in time!

I wear plain old Costco sneakers. They have never given me a moments distress.

However for those of you who are trying to deal with blisters there is a porduct by Dr Sholes available just about everywhere. It used to be called "Moleskin" but I think the name has changed. It is like really thick felt with an adhesive back. You stick it directly to your foot to cushion a spot where your shoe is rubbing. It will usually stay even through 2 or 3 showers. It really helps.

Welcome to Rivendell Alatáriël & Hilde! Have some coffee. Look, here is a hot spring where you can soak your feet while you wtch the arrival or other adventurers.

Cheeer up, Galenfea! You're ahead of me!!! smilies/wink.gif Many thanks to Raefindel for the suggestion of moleskin for my poor aching feet! I haven't been able to get any yet and am substituting band-aids, but I plan to get some today! Despite my husband's suggestion I skip a day to heal my feet, the band-aids gave me enough relief so that I could go 3 more miles. It has become rather a compulsion! I only wish I had more time to walk! If I don't get it soon, I may have to start running! smilies/eek.gif (And that would be a return to one of my teenage obsessions that eventually ruined my knees--maybe I can be smarter this time!)

Congratulations, Arwen, for your success in reaching Rivendell. I should be there in the next month or so, if I can make myself start walking.

Unfortunately no horse sired by Shadowfax came my way, so I'm not there yet. smilies/biggrin.gif Tomorrow I'm going on a three-hour trail ride, however, and that should get some pretty good mileage, especially if I'm riding my Acorn, the perfect horse for any Hobbit.

The blister is still bothering me, but the ankle is healed! After making that discovery I went to tell Strider. He got up and started walking after giving me a strange look. I hope he doesn't think I was faking it. The blister is no problem. With my Elven boots (and the aid of a band-aid) it doesn't bother me at all. Maybe I can get to mile 260 today. Well, maybe not. Strider told me that was what he wanted to do, so I guess I'll have to try, right?

Anyone in the area of 250 miles? Curious if I've got a walking companion of one sort.

Wonder how mark12_30 is doing on the road. I really should email her...

Lyta: I learned the hard way...don't wear dwarf boots! I wear some lovely elven slippers that I got at ElfMart, with some inserts that have heel and ball of foot cushions and arch supports. I also use the Dr. Scholl's moleskin pads. When I have blister problems, I cut small pieces of foam cosmetic wedges and secure with adhesive tape. Very cushiony socks also help.

Hilde: Come join Arwen and the rest of us in the hot spring..it does wonders for sore and aching muscles and feet.

Nurumaiel: Glad your ankle is better. Try some moleskin or bits of foam cosmetic wedges for those blisters.

Linnamalle: We're saving a spot in the hot spring for you! (not to mention a seat at the feast smilies/rolleyes.gif )

Welcome to Rivendell Alatáriël & Hilde! Have some coffee. Look, here is a hot spring where you can soak your feet while you watch the arrival of other adventurers.

Oooh, thanks, Rae! Absolutely delicious! It's been wonderful the past few days, just lazing around in the hot spring with the twins, and watching TTT. Since there's two of them, I can have both feet massaged at the same time--aaahh!! Fabulous food, hot springs, foot massages, and TTT...what more could an Elf want? smilies/tongue.gif However, I want to make it to Lórien by December 17, so it's time to swear in the sheriff and get this show back on the road! Mt. Doom isn't getting any closer.

--------------------

...such was the virtue of the land of Rivendell that soon all fear and anxiety was lifted from their minds. The future, good or ill, was not forgotten, but ceased to have any power over the present. Health and hope grew strong in them, and they were content with each good day as it came, taking pleasure in every meal, and in every word and song.

So the days slipped away, as each morning dawned bright and fair, and each evening followed cool and clear. But autumn was waning fast; slowly the golden light faded to pale silver, and the lingering leaves fell from the naked trees. A wind began to blow chill from the Misty Mountains to the east. The Hunter's Moon waxed round in the night sky, and put to flight all the lesser stars. But low in the South one star shone red. Every night, as the Moon waned again, it shone brighter and brighter. Frodo could see it from his window, deep in the heavens, burning like a watchful eye that glared above the trees on the brink of the valley.

I plan to walk five more miles today, though how I have no idea. Yesterday I walked 12 miles in all on my Shire pony. As we crossed the Great Road we came to a long stretch of dirt through the trees and Strider gave us permission to canter to the end. Strider and Sam stayed behind with Frodo. I think part of the reason Sam did that was to stay with Frodo, but I also think he was afraid to ride so fast. Do you know that instead of just one pony this time we have a pony for each hobbit and one horse for Strider? smilies/biggrin.gif

Everyone but Strider was feeling very weary as we came to a stopping point for a meal. I don't know about Strider, but everyone was very hungry. My fellow Hobbits had breakfast but they're Hobbits, and I unwisely missed it. Strider didn't have feelings for any of us besides Frodo and he made us take care of the horses ourselves! Of course he let Sam off to go find herbs and everything for a meal. His horse was still extremely energetic, and while our tired ponies were easy to take care of, the three of us (Merry, Pippin, and myself) had to work together. Poor Merry had to keep becoming a stool for Pippin and I to stand on!

Afterwards we returned wearily to the campsite and found a delicious meal waiting for us. We were so tired we just sat down and began to eat. Sam asked Strider how much longer it was to Rivendell. Strider said 188 miles, and the three workers couldn't even rejoice, we just exchanged delighted looks.

Strider says we have to walk at least 5 miles today. He wants to walk more, but I think he's finally beginning to appreciate the fact that we aren't Rangers like he is. And now I better be off so we can start on our first mile. Strider says we can't ride the ponies this time because they're more exhausted than we are. I'm sure he gets to ride his horse though.

Thanks for the advice, Alatariël! Elf-Mart! I love that name, except I've yet to see an elf inside it (lots of orcs and trolls though-dangerous place)! I shop almost exclusively at thrift stores and yard sales, except for perishables and other modern conveniences. I found a very good pair of barely used Nikes today at a thrift store and wore them for my walk this evening. 200% better on the feet! I will need arch supports for them, but it was SO much easier with proper shoes than it had been! And that's a good thing! I've estimated that I'll have to walk an average of 3.77 miles a day to make it to Rivendell on time! Anyone else wondering how in Middle Earth they're going to make it on time?

6 miles yesterday! As we sat down for dinner Strider complimented us, though I don't see what for. I'm sure compared to what he can do, it was absolutely nothing. I take it, however, that we did better than we usually do. smilies/smile.gif We had a delicious soup and some bread for dinner. Sam is an absolute marvel at cooking, I must say! While he cooked Merry, Pippin, and I discussed Rivendell and what it would be like (actually, the evening consisted of playing a LotR board game).

After dinner we really enjoyed ourselves singing and dancing. Strider, Frodo, and Sam rather just watched, though Sam consented to sing a few songs for us. I don't know what Strider thought of our party before we reached Rivendell. I told him we were celebrating the arrival of our friends.

Now I'm laughing insanely as I think of how Strider, Merry, Pippin, Frodo, and Sam are in so many places at once!

Lyra, good luck! And it's nice to see you around.

Arwen, don't feel ashamed. I plan to invite some friends over some day for a day of watching FotR and tTT, and we shall unashamedly be wearing LotR costumes. I'll also be dressing up when I reach Rivendell. Who says I'm too old to enjyo dressing up?

Peony, I have the same problem. I need an alarm clock that plays LotR music or something. But I have excuses for sleeping in late, because I'm in bed after midnight. Strider doesn't like that very much, naturally. It holds us up a lot. I tried to tell him I was watching The Long and Short of It but he totally ignored me. Even if he did listen he'd tell me it was a short film. But I also had to watch the making of it, the tTT trailers, the special edition preview, and the RotK preview (which looks so awesome).

Lyta, keep up the good work! You're doing much better than I did. It took me a couple months to reach Frodo's campsite at 18 miles! Can you believe it? For me it's all about have enough courage to start the walking for the day, then it's a cinch. I had real walking companions yesterday, not just imaginary Merrys and Pippins, and that made it so much easier.

Better be off now. Strider's calling. I do nothing but grumble about him, but he's actually pretty great... for one of the Big Folk.

Lyra: Congratulations! Welcome to Rivendell..come on over and join us in the hot springs.

My atlas shows 285 miles from Rivendell to Lórien; 393 miles from Lórien to Rauros; and 470 miles from Rauros to Mt. Doom--a total of 1,606 miles from Bag End to Mt. Doom.

I am so embarrassed! I would like to apologize to my fellow walkers for grossly miscalculating the distance from Rivendell to Lórien. smilies/frown.gif I spent several hours yesterday afternoon working on a timetable/mileage chart for the rest of the journey. I discovered that if I follow the Fellowship exactly, it is actually 465 miles from Rivendell to Caras Galadhon (396 to the banks of Nimrodel). I'm not sure where my head was when I originally calculated the distance. The other sections of the journey only required small mileage adjustments: 389 from Caras Galadhon to Rauros; & 468 miles from Rauros to Mt. Doom. A total of 1,780 miles from Bag End to Mt. Doom.

It is still a feasible goal to walk from Rivendell to Caras Galadhon by December 17. It's 108 days till RotK..at 465 miles that's approximately 4.3 miles per day. Or at least to Nimrodel (3.67 miles per day). I'm not sure if I can make it by then, but I'm going to do my best.

So, I guess I'll continue posting here.
Three cheers BW, for the updated tracker!
***
Being on the road again has lifted our spirits greatly. We got boxes of food from Lord Elrond, so hopefully, we won't be having cram for a while!
***
We have walked 481 miles.
We have passed Fords of Bruinen (480).
It is 44 miles to the next landmark.
We still have 441 miles to Caras Galadon in Lothlórien.
***
At the Ford of Bruinen they left the Road and turning southwards went on by narrow paths among the folded lands. Their purpose was to hold this course west of the Mountains for many miles and days.

I'm so proud of myself!

You have walked 643 miles.
You have passed Misty Mountain Foothills (615).
You are only 17 miles from High Vantage Point.
You still have 279 miles to Caras Galadon in Lothlórien.

At first it seemed to the hobbits that although they walked and stumbled until they were weary, they were creeping forward like snails, and getting nowhere. Each day the land looked much the same as it had the day before. Yet steadily the mountains were drawing nearer.

Wow, BW!! Thanks for updating the mileage tracker to Lórien. I know it took a lot of work.
______________________________

I miss Rivendell, but it's good to be back on the road. At the moment I feel a bit of deja vu..this is close to where we had the barbeque on the way in to Rivendell. We'll soon pass the Ford though, and then we'll be in new territory. We brought a pack pony with us this time (Bill, of course!), and plenty of lembas and other food. Frodo is well again, so we are quite a merry company (sorry Merry--no pun intended smilies/tongue.gif ). I'm not too sure about that dwarf though...he has quite a belligerent attitude. Legolas and I had better keep an eye on him.

--------------------

Elrond summoned the hobbits to him. He looked gravely at Frodo..."I can forsee very little of your road; and how your task is to be achieved I do not know. The Shadow has crept now to the feet of the Mountains, and draws nigh even to the borders of Greyflood; and under the Shadow all is dark to me. You will meet many foes, some open, and some disguised; and you may find friends upon your way when you least look for it."

Wow, good job on the Walk to Lorien mileage indicator, BW! I had wondered how mileage would be followed inside Moria, but it seems you've worked that out too! I've got a LONG way to go before I worry about getting across the Bridge of Khazad-Dum, though! I'm only 6 miles from Buckleberry Ferry--closer and closer, yet still so far away... smilies/biggrin.gif On another thought, those hobbits must have had incredibly resilient and tough feet! Mine are blistered up and down and I wear shoes! smilies/eek.gif

Cheers,

You have walked 287 miles.
You are still south of the Road (286).
It is 13 miles to the next landmark. You still have 171 miles to Rivendell.

Slowly, slowly, but I'm getting there. Nearly to mile 300, which is an extremely exciting thing for me. I will be walking to Lothlorien, but I'm not going to get there before Dec. 17th. That doesn't mean I won't try, of course. If I can get to Rivendell soon I think I should have a small chance.

Mileage list updated. Second post on the thread, under BW's.

Strider says that now that Frodo is well again, we can make five miles a day! So, five miles today we did. (In Gym, we had to run a mile, and then I walked another four.)
***
We have walked 488 miles.
We have passed Fords of Bruinen (480).
It is 37 miles to the next landmark.
We still have 434 miles to Caras Galadon in Lothlórien.

As the season draws on and the sun sets later and later I will begin to walk at night as the fellowship did, but for now there is still sufficient daylight left.

I walked by a stream and watched the salmon run today. I always find that awsome. Tolkien never mentioned fishing but Frodo began his quest in the fall so perhaps he at least watched the samon run as well.

Yes! Less than one hundred miles to go for Rivendell, and I may even take up the Walk to Lorien. I've been bogged down with a nasty cold today, though, so I doubt that I'll be getting any miles done.

Camping in the Trollshaws has paid off, as Strider has informed us that we are less than one hundred miles from Rivendell. Even though we are greatly heartened by that news, we are still troubled by Frodo's steadily worsening. Yesterday he seemed to have slipped into a black cloud. Strider presses us on, hurrying us. We are exhausted every night, and must start early every morning. I will be so glad when we get to Rivendell and receive a well-deserved rest!

Just a reminder to vote for your favorite short story in the Éowyn Challenge Third House Contest.

BlingBling and I were walking by the sea the past two weekends. I know the sea and the sound of the gulls is dangerous for elves but we had a thoroughly enjoyable time (beautiful weather for a change).

After the sunshine, tangy sea air and sand in our toes it is very difficult to get motivated enough to walk during the evenings in the rain (we have had rain for three days now). Oh well, we need to add to our mileage so I guess we will be getting wet tonight. smilies/smile.gif

We have passed the Ford and are headed south into the Wild. The terrain is quite rugged now and our progress slow, especially since we are walking at night. But Strider knows this land well, and we have seen no sign of pursuit. Frodo spent a great deal of time with Bilbo at Rivendell, and it seems to have lifted his spirits greatly. He appears to have fully recovered from his wound and to be quite himself again.

--------------------

"Just a plain hobbit you look," said Bilbo. "But there is more about you now than appears on the surface. Good luck to you!" He turned away and looked out of the window, trying to hum a tune.

"I cannot thank you as I should, Bilbo, for this, and for all your past kindnesses," said Frodo.

"Don't try!" said the old hobbit, turning round and slapping him on the back. "Ow!" he cried. "You are too hard now to slap! But there you are: Hobbits must stick together, and especially Bagginses. All I ask in return is: take as much care of yourself as you can, and bring back all the news you can, and any old songs and tales you can come by. I'll do my best to finish my book before you return. I should like to write the second book, if I am spared."

At last I'm to the Old Forest!
I'm back at school now, so my mileage should (potentially) skyrocket. I feel like Sam, with a huge pack containing everything we might possibly have a use for. I can't wait to get to Lothlorien, Lembas will be such a welcome change from Power Bars!

Good show, Pyroclastic! I'm right behind you at Crickhollow, taking a much needed bath...with Pippin! smilies/wink.gif I'm not sure which of us is splashing more! Best of luck! I think I should also learn to make lembas for the longer treks ahead...

Legolas: Lembas, the waybread of the Elves... One bite can fill the stomach of a grown man.
Merry to Pippin: How many did you eat?
Pippin (belching contentedly): Four...

I am still running, but I have lost track of my miles. I think I am probably somewhere in the 510-520 area because I have been running a lot recently.
I will try to determine though how far I am to Lorien. I have come this far, I might as well go all the way smilies/cool.gif

If those doggoned black riders were defeated at the ford, why did I see three of them today? Maybe I'm feverish and hallucinating. At least that would explain my dismal progress.

I thought folks who collapsed at the ford got a free ride to Rivendell. No such luck. Weeeeellll, one quarter mile at a time...

I continue to make slow progress along the road. Strider told me I had some kind of flame burning in me when I rushed ahead about a week or two ago, and he thinks it's gone. He's wrong, however. I want to walk, but I'm finding it rather difficult, as I have another foot injury (which is in reality a very small, barely perceptible glass-cut, but despite its small size it is very hard to put weight on that foot without feeling a nasty pain run up my leg). Hopefully neither Strider nor the Hobbits will think I'm injuring myself on purpose for an excuse. smilies/rolleyes.gif

I walked half a mile today, and then my foot gave out (I was not trying to walk on the glass-cut, I was walking on my toes, which is almost as bad after half a mile) and I stopped. It's feeling a little better now, so maybe I can do that other half mile? Strider would be pleased.

EDIT: Mileage list updated! 8 and 10 were popular numbers for miles walked since last update. smilies/smile.gif

Come on, Linnamalle, don't give up! You're almost there...I think I can! I think I can!

______________________________

Strider and Gandalf feel we are travelling much too slowly. They say that we got lazy while we were in Rivendell. (I think it's that dwarf that's slowing us down!) The weather has been wet, cold & windy...not the best conditions for tramping through the wild at night. However, even though the Riders were unhorsed at the Ford, the Enemy has many servants and we dare not travel by daylight.

--------------------

It was a cold grey day near the end of December. The East Wind was streaming through the bare branches of the trees, and seething in the dark pines on the hills. Ragged clouds were hurrying overhead, dark and low. As the cheerless shadows of the early evening began to fall the Company made ready to set out. They were to start at dusk, for Elrond counselled them to journey under cover of night as often as they could, until they were far from Rivendell.

"You should fear the many eyes of the servants of Sauron," he said. "I do not doubt that news of the discomfiture of the Riders has already reached him, and he will be filled with wrath. Soon now his spies on foot and wing will be abroad in the northern lands. Even of the sky above you must beware as you go on your way."

Alatariel, you are a certified Sweetie. Thanks for the encouragement.

I did another mile yesterday. One furry foot in front of the other... I travel this weekend. Sigh! Still, maybe I can get to Rivendell by then. Although I doubt USAir will be serving elven feast-food on the plane!!

(edit)
Yippee, a good day today! Three miles to go.

Still at Crickhollow. We're planning on setting out this evening, even if we don't end up getting very far. Merry says it's only five miles to the edge of the Old Forest, so it shouldn't take too long to get there.

I'm feeling a bit apprehensive; I've heard far too many stories about the Old Forest to be comfortable about going in there. But Pippin, as usual, is being my pillar of strength. He's so self-confident, and it seems to rub off on me.

I hope we get through this alright...

______________________________

We trudged along in the dark again last night. The wind has died down somewhat, so it was actually quite pleasant walking in the moonlight...except for all that dwarvish racket! Huffing and puffing (and grumbling and dratting)--most annoying. We were able to reach the 500 mile point before stopping this morning.

--------------------

The Company took little gear of war, for their hope was in secrecy not in battle. Aragorn had Andúril but no other weapon...Boromir had a long sword, in fashion like Andúril but of less lineage, and he bore also a shield and his war-horn...Gimli the dwarf alone wore openly a short shirt of steel-rings, for dwarves make light of burdens; and in his belt was a broad-bladed axe. Legolas had a bow and a quiver, and at his belt a long white knife. The younger hobbits wore the swords that they had taken from the barrow; but Frodo took only Sting; and his mail-coat, as Bilbo wished, remained hidden. Gandalf bore his staff, but girt at his side was the elven-sword Glamdring, the mate of Orcrist that lay now upon the breast of Thorin under the Lonely Mountain.
