The Downs now appears to have many international posters as well as the more mundane domestic variety. Where's everyone from? And if you're feeling wordy (as I always am, but I guess you know that) how did you first get into JRRT?

I'm originally from Boston, now living in Miami. I was a sci-fi fan and decided to try some fantasy. Because I didn't think I'd like it, I decided to start with what I heard was the absolute best. BTW, don't read much sci-fi anymore but I still read Tolkien.

origins in texas, lived in montana for ten years and have recently returned to tx after many years gone wandering. my mom got me started with the jrr when i was around 7 or 8 , she gave me her copy of the hobbit.we lived on a farm in the country and there was not much to do with my free time so i began reading at an early age. so now when she complains that i live too far away i just say "roads go ever ever on...". for me reading the hobbit was the spark that lit my imagination.

I'm a transplanted Michigander living in Iowa. *sigh...* How I miss the lakes and trees and rolling hills of my homeland...

I had to pick a book to read for a report in 7th grade so I picked The Hobbit for no real reason. Loved it and the rest is history...

Looks like us Germans are now trying to conquer ze worrld via the Internet...and we have our spies everywhere, especially in the States

The funny thing about my Tolkienization is that I did not care for his books very much when I had already read a great deal of other fantasy stuff. I was well aware that especially LOTR was held as the epitome of fantasy, and mostly its origin, but for some years I thought the books would not be worth a read because I supposed they were rather old-fashioned or commercial, although I loved "The Hobbit" when we read it at school.

Good start! Keep the responses coming. How about some more "domestics"? And isn't there anyone from England?

As an aside, I'm amazed at the fluency of so many Europeans whose native language isn't english. I speak passable spanish (but I can't get the knack for the tenses of the verbs), but no other languages. The US does have a well-deserved reputation for being provincial.

I live in Glasgow, in Scotland. If you think the US is provincial, Mithadan, you should try living here for a while. On the last Saturday of October, many Scots should turn their clocks forward 300 years.

I first read The Hobbit when I was seven or so and I haven`t looked back since.

I grew up in Pennsylvania -- miss those trees, hills, and general greenness, too, red -- but have lived in Los Angeles lo these many years now since starting college, minus one year spent working at the Grand Canyon in Arizona.

I think I came by The Hobbit and LotR because of Dungeons & Dragons (a popular fantasy role-playing game, for my foreign friends who may be mystified), but it's possible that my uncle may have turned me on to Tolkien. I don't remember now. Maybe both. This would have been when I was about eleven or twelve.

I loved the books and re-read them many times between then and about seventeen or eighteen, then mostly forgot about them until a while back when the announcement came that they would be made into movies. I re-read the books, got curious about what was around Tolkien-wise on the net after watching the online trailer, found the Downs on pretty much the first try, and have been here ever since.

international board?

Yes, it's international. I'm from the Netherlands. I read LoTR when I was about 15, day and night, even during boring classes.
It was in english and I couldn't put it down, even though I didn't like the hobbit first. Later I tried the dutch translation, but a lot of the atmosphere seemed to be missing.
Now I stumbled on the Barrow Downs and I intend to reread everything and even try to read the unfinished tales.
At the moment I'm not working because of a broken ankle (they put some mithril in it) and I have a borrowed computer. However, I intend to buy my own asap, I really like it.
I think the Barrow Downs is a nice site with a lot of items.
BTW Mithadan, being dutch you have to speak foreign languages.
And Burrahobbit, the best compliment I ever got, was that an irish lady couldn't hear where I came from.;-)

The Dutch UT you can find in Belgium, last year I bought one(Now I only read the English books, much better, especially the Letters and so) "Nagelaten Vertellingen" by Het Spectrum. Have a look at the Fnac store in Gent. First floor by the books, or ask it.

Re: international board?

One downside of the German version is that too many things are translated; mainly the names of the hobbits which according to JRRT should better have been left unchanged to preserve their Englishness.

About those names, when I first ventured into the Barrow-downs, I was wondering what the f they meant with the Shire, for I opnly knew it as De Gouw. It took a while before I 'knew' what dutch translation was of the basic people and places in the shire.

I´m from Catalonia (in Spain), and I fell in love with barrowdowns, and specially the forums, the first day I visited the website, only a few weeks ago. I read Hobbit and LotR when I was 11 or 12, in my language, catalan, and then in spanish, and after so many time, at last in english.I like to read, from time to time, some passages of the books aloud, it is great ...though in english my accent may not be as good as I would like ...

Now I´m reading Tolkien letters (a spanish translation), and the more I know Professor Tolkien, the more I love him and his world.

Far over the misty mountains cold ... Més enllà de les boiroses i fredes muntanyes ...The road goes ever ever on ... El camí continua sempre, sempre endavant.

Well I think I'm the first person to post from England so far. I'm originally Welsh, but I live in Derbyshire now.

I wondered where most people here were based, as the time on the clock (for posts) is way off the time here - whose time is it?

I got into Tolkien (well, LotR really) when I was 9 or 10, then lost touch for ages. I've recently rediscovered my enthusiasm for the books, and am re-reading avidly.

It's nice to see so many nationalities here - and to echo what someone else said, you all have such great English!

I've been reading Tolkien for several years now, though I just finished the Sil this year.

I also found that slightly annoying/confusing when I bought the Spanish translation of the Fellowship, but it is also a good way to learn more about both languages. For instance, I didn't realize what the Shire really meant until I saw it translated as Comarca, which means neighbourhood. Then it clicked with all those -shire suffixes that England has!

But isn't Shire more specifically in relation to the country? (Or rather, it used to be - these days there are large cities in English -shires.) In West Australia, at any rate, a local government district can be called "city of", "town of" or if it's in the country "shire of". (For example: City of Perth, Town of Vincent, Shire of Goomalling.)

I got curious. Read the Lord of the Rings, then went back and got the Hobbit!

I'm from Nebraska, started reading "The Hobbit" in 7th grade because it was required. Didn't read any more of it till my senior year in highschool. But i loved it so much i got LOTR and The Silmarilian and read them about 8 or 9 times now. Recently i purchaced other books like UT and books by other authors describing Tolkien related stuff. So i guess i started a year and a half ago. Reading them nonstop that is.

Since everyone taht has been in the chat has asked me once or twice for that matter where Im from, I shall put it in stone so to speak. Currently I am living on Long Island which is to the east of New York City, only a half hour train ride (only that long because of the stops to Penn.) And to any of you that think Lawn Guylanders have a strange accent (I couldnt resist ) I have a mild english accent. My father was English, but that doesnt much account for anything. I was born in Kentucky, and was moved to NY when I was about a month old, so I have no memories of teh Ohio River, or any bluegrass (even though there is a patch of it on my front lawn ) And the rest of my origins lie shrouded in mystery.

“I have been a fierce bull and a yellow buck. I have been a boat upon the sea. I have been the foam of water. I have been a drop in the air. I have journeyed as high as an eagle. I have been at the throne of the distributor. I have stood high upon the white hill. I was fluent before being gifted with speech. I have been teacher to all intelligences. I have singly built the tower of Nimrhod. I am the tetragrammaton. I am a wonder whose origin is not know, and I shall be until the day of doom upon the earth…” -=I may be found merrymaking at The Barrow Downs or telling stories at Sûldal's Keep

Well, I'm from Ohio, and I first read the Hobbit in 6th grade. The next year, I read all the LOTR books, and the Silmarillion. In 8th grade, i had to read the Hobbit for English class, and I reentered into ME. When I read it in 8th grade, I was stuck for good. I started learning Quenya (which I still am), reread all of LOTR, read Sil, and started the HoME series. I'm now in 9th grade, and I've reread Sil, and I'm still trying to get enough money to buy the rest of the HoME. that's about it

I am not certain we may put it so strictly. Georgia lies indeed between Asia and Europe. little bit to the Norht is Russia's European part, little bit to the South Turkey - Asia Minor. Culturally and spiritually we may be linked more with the Eastern orthodox Christian states such as was Bizantium and now is Russia, historically with the Middle East as a whole, with Sasanide Persia and Arab Caliphate etc. But if you ask any given georgian in the street does he think himself asian or european, answer would certainly be the latter.

Bay Area, California. The only bad thing about living here is that everything costs alot of money and there is bad traffic. Otherwise, there is a little bit of everything to do and always nice weather.

I read The Hobbit and LOTR about a year ago and have been re-reading them alot. I didn't even know there was going to be a movie..

Telchar - Denmark rocks, man. I passed through there about ten years ago. I grew up on stories of Hans Christian Anderson (probably one of the reasons I love Tolkien's works so much) and had to make a mandatory pilgramage.

Got my picture of the Little Mermaid statue. The HCA museum was a bit of a disappointment though. I'd like to go back and visit Odense and Legoland.

Later all. SEE YOU REAL SOON! (groan)

I have lived in Texas most of my life, though I lived in Europe for four years right after high school. Right now I live in Corpus Christi, Texas, near the beach . I first read The Hobbit and then Lord of the Rings when I was 11 or 12; The Silmarillion was released just as I finished Return of the King, so I read that, too. I have also read The Adventures of Tom Bombadill, Smith of Wooten Major, On Faerie Stories (I hope I got those titles right, it's been a while), Unfinished Tales, and Morgoth's Ring (HoME #10). Other books by different authors I really like include The Once and Future King by E.B. White, the Vampire Chronicles by Anne Rice (especially Memnoch the Devil), and Colleen McCullough's series on the Roman Republic (First Man in Rome, The Grass Crown, etc.). Before I read Tolkien, I read all the Narnia books by C.S. Lewis. Any of you younger elves and hobbits who haven't read them yet should really check 'em out .

"Long Beren lay, and his spirit wandered upon the dark borders of death, knowing ever an anguish that pursued him from dream to dream. Read The Hobbit at 12, LOTR at 13 (a dozen times), went about daydreaming of new themes for Frodo, then added new characters from the present with modern weapons to blow away Balrogs. Envision my characters solving riddles at Elrond's Council, even to this day.

Listened to the music on the radio of 1973-1980 while re-reading LOTR. That music still makes me misty. If you don't listen to the radio while reading LOTR, try it!

Finglofin, you are not the only LOTR lover in Kapaa (by Lihue for the rest of you). My sister is the events coordinator at the Raddison in Lihue, and lives in Kapaa.

As some of you probably already know, I live in a Greek village called Aghia Triada (=Holy Trinity), about 25 kilometres from Thessaloniki. But I was born in Yorkshire, England.
I first read Tolkien at the age of 12 or so when I saw my classmates reading the Hobbit.
Whenever I travel around Northern Greece I'm amazed at how Tolkienesque the landscape is.

What is kinda wierd is I am the only one in my entire school(besides a guy who just moved here from utah) who is an avid tolkien fan.

I'm from England, Buckingham*shire* if ya want to get technical, lol. I thought There would be more brits here, this board really is diverse.

I have a confession, I only started reading the Lord of The Rings in January this year. I read the Hobbit a long time ago, but never realised that LoTR was kind of like a sequel (if I'd have known it had more Bilbo in it I would have picked it up in a flash) I'd always known about it, but I think I assumed it was a bit too geeky or something (I know, I'm hanging my head in shame!) until my dad bought me the set for Christmas. Now I can't believe I didn't read it sooner, and I can't imagine what it was like not to have read it! It touched me that much. I read most of it on Holiday in The Alps in March, sitting by this snowy, fastflowing river with no-one around(yes, I'm also a hopeless sap, hehe) so the whole book is linked up with this wilderness picture in my mind and I'm now a Tolkien freak.

Hi and welcome to the board Galenriel.
Some here call it Tolkienist instead of Freak or Nerd - but it doesn't really matter as long as you enjoy the books - If you wanna get more geeky - read the Silmarillion and Unfinished Tales - more about Elves - and no hobbits - Still the same world, just earlier!

Lived here pretty much all my life, with the exception of after I was born. I lived in another part of New York...closer to the city the first 11 months of my life.

I grew up on a farm as well, with little to do at night, until you get your drivers license. So playing D & D with my brother, magic the gathering, video games, and reading tolkien.

If I recall correctly, there was a road that went through Gettysburg PE, where the Cicil War battle was fought, called the Hagerstown road, It was a North-South Road, so I assume, it might have began or ended at your town!

Re: The Downs, an international board. Where are you from?

Hello, I am from Zoetermeer, The Netherlands, 23 yrs.

I think I was here before, but I can't remember...
Anyway, as most students, I had to read something for my English literature list, and my teacher recommended Lotr. I borrowed the book from the library (Fellowship), but upon finishing it, the second part (Towers) was already lended out. So I read the Hobbit in between. Everything became clear after that. Finishing the complete Lotr, I just HAD to read the Sil. And now I am a genuine Tolkien-freak like the rest of you (no offense, but compliments)

My knowledge for the most part comes from playing MERP, the game. I think there is no better way (apart from reading the books) for getting the 'feel' of Middle Earth. Currently, I am combining MERP with Rolemaster and AD&D, making it a complete game in a Middle Earth setting. Where MERP the first edition was much to simplistic, and Rolemaster was much too difficult, I created a good mix between the both. I am now facing the hideous task of translating over 3000 spells in Quenya. All in good time, I will place all my files on the internet, for free and downloadable for all. It will be the best RPG* you've as of yet laid your eyes on!

Anyone who is interested please, feel free to correspond

* By RPG I mean RPG the real stuff, not some lame, fantasy-robbing computergame

I'm from Texas, floating around somewhere in the Dallas/Fort Worth Metromess. I love it, it's home, but it's hot. I'm jealous of you Scotlanders, I want to go there so bad! That and Ireland, since I'm of a stron Irish dicent. (Hence my inability to tan! ) Alas, I digress...

I got into LOTR when I was about 8. My dad read them all to me (including the Hobbit. In fact, one of the three times I've ever seen my dad cry was when Fili and Kili died! No joke...) so they've always been special. Like some others here, I see, I've just recently experianced a Middle-earth rennasciance. Ah...
