I used to be quite good at Haiku, 30 years ago! What is my competition like? Anyone else going to give it a try?

Likewise I was once semi-proficient in writing haiku. I'll spend some time and try to produce something worth submitting. Lots of luck.

I am a passable poet but have never tried my hand at Haiku.

Haiku

You might want to spend some time in the library or a favorite bookstore. People from around the world have a slightly different spin on it. the 5-7-5 in three lines remains the same, but I've seen some lovely pieces where the third line gives an entirely new meaning to the first two.

An aftrican one that is still in my mind goes something like..

The elephant dies
A pond dries round its edges
Slowly they expire

(That isn't it exactly, but the comparison is the same.)

I think they're quite alike to cinquins, which are my favourites next to limericks.

Re: Haiku

To expand on Evenspire's remark, the three lines of a haiku are separate yet united. They are not one long sentence divided into three parts. The best haikus I've seen (non-Middle-earth ones) have each line stand on its own, or, as Evenspire said, at least the last line stands on its own as an entity - but still reflective of the whole meaning of the haiku.

So, if you get a few dozen that are quite good, is there somewhere you can publish them?

Mithadan, can you enter too?

Re: Haiku

I lived in Japan for three years and they put haiku on everything. If you buy an appliance, it would say something like:
Floating small blossoms,
Of a pretty cherry tree,
Make a person grin.

However I never wrote it before, but tried it anyway.

"Good Morning!" said the dragon. "You seem surprised."
"Good Morning! said Farmer Giles. "I am that!"

Has anyone sent a poem in?

I find it is easier to write an ironic haiku than a funny one. I'm still working on them.

Re: haiku

I can't enter the contest, but I just had to give it a try!

BILBO (Humourous)
Can't think! So frightened!
Wait, what's this in my pocket?
Three guesses? What luck!

BOROMIR (Serious)
The Ring of Power
could be and should be mine;
Gondor's only hope!

FARAMIR (Serious)
Distant Numenor's
glory and nobility
I do not forget.

GANDALF (Serious)
My power constrained.
Mortal choices countervail.
Little time is left.

FRODO (Serious)
One fire will melt it.
I go to the Cracks of Doom.
O, this precious Ring!

SAMWISE (Serious)
He'll give us the slip!
He's the finest of us all...
He won't go alone!

PIPPIN (Humourous)
Wizards argue on high.
Dangling rag tag is amazed!
Look out!!!!! Ooooh! What's this?

Haiku

Now you've done it. Now you've gone and inspired me to write silly haikus that I won't submit.

The ring grows heavy
Flee the nazgul, nine there are
Give gollum a fish!

Lost in Middle Earth
Frodo, Sam, Pippin, Merry
Strider give us hope!

Hobbits of the Shire
Elrond will give you shelter
Council too. Now git!

Gandalf's form gleems white
Here he comes to save the day
Naa, that's just the moon.

With a great big grin
Fangorn comes upon the two
Now there is but one

Haiku

Now the flood won't stop

Precious! Oh Precious!
Where is the filthy Baggins?!
We hates it forev_!

To the cracks of Doom
Frodo and Sam creep slowly
Gollum's right behind!

Oh thank you Elrond!
Whenever we are in need
The Doctor is in!

Stop me before I write again!!

More Haikus!

These things are like popcorn!

MERRY (Serious)
He is as my father.
She stands so fair, facing death.
I must do something!

BUTTERBUR (Humourous)
One more thing to do!
I'll send it off tomorrow,
or the day after...

ARAGORN (Serious)
I dare, risking all,
choosing ancient destiny,
winning Realm and Queen!

ELROND (Serious)
I now understand,
Thingol's unbearable sadness.
But how like Elros!

GALADRIEL (Serious)
Uttermost West seems far.
Ruling here loses its sweetness.
Shall I pass the test?

ROSIE COTTON (Serious)
I'll not give him up.
He'll keep his word, like always!
But I miss him so.

GIMLI (Serious)
Give me orcish necks!
Good-boned stone beneath my feet!
Galadriel's hair...

LEGOLAS (Serious)
And what else is there?
Fangorn's Forest must be seen!
Then, at last, the Sea.

THORIN (Serious)
Hammer strikes anvil.
Smaug must pay for dwarvish deaths!
The anvil resounds.

THRANDUIL (Serious)
Dwarves in my forest?
They must be up to something.
Erebor's not far...

BOMBUR (Humourous)
I'm weary, starving.
Woodland king and feast in dreams!
Not another step!

BEORN (Humourous)
Don't tell me! More Dwarves?
Never mind, finish begging!
What if this is true?

THEODEN (Serious)
Despair and great age.
Stormcrow stirs both blood and limb.
Forth Eorlingas!

EOWYN (Serious)
The foul Dwimmerlaik!
Deathless to the hand of man?
I am a woman!

EOMER (Serious)
Slain king and sister!
Ride to ruin and world's end!
Eorl's sons cry, "Death!"

SARUMAN (Serious)
Gnawing ends of plots.
Profit from some small mischief?
Halfling slavery.

WORMTONGUE (Serious)
What have I become?
Humiliated. Depraved.
I hate the old man!

SANDYMAN (Serious)
Times are changing!
Anyone with eyes can see that.
I want a piece, too!

LOBELIA (Humourous)
Waited long enough!
No Bucklanders in Bag End!
Is it really mine?

LOTHO (Serious)
My name's not Pimple!
Who's laughing now, I wonder!
You put Mother where?

BOMBADIL (Humourous)
Ho! Tom Bombadil!
I can sing or wear what I like!
Tom Bombadillo!

WITCH KING (Serious)
Hatred! O, Darkness!
There is nothing left but hate.
And I hate them all.

SAURON (Serious)
Crush their rash power.
Where is the one with my Ring?
Orodruin! NO!

Haiku

I do not envy those that must choose the "best". Far too subjective. It would take an expert on Haiku to find those works that really meet all the criteria.

Hobbits of the Shire
Today we must all unite
Get rid of Sharky!

Gondor, Oh Gondor
Boromir is lost to you
Yet Faramir lives

Mithrandir and he
On the bridge of Khazad dum
Met for one fell fight

Hum. I've tried a couple, but found they don't seem to be my forte. (I mean, worse than my regular poetry!)
For example:

LOTR (Movie) Moment (II) (Moria)

"This is bad!" cried Sam, jumping up. "I don't know what this Man has been up to. Why should Mr. Frodo put the thing on? he didn't ought to have;and, if he has, goodness knows what may have happened! "
