View Full Version : Elvish Insults!

1. I am sorry if this topic has already been done
2. I know it should probably go in the language section but I wasn't sure if it would insult anyone there so I thought it best to post here.

Anyone know any good elvish insults that you can shout at your boss or teachers without them knowing what the hell your on about?
Here are some:

Nadorhuan(rim)= cowardly dog(s)

Auta miqula orqu= go kiss an orc

Amin delotha lle= I hate you

Antolle ulua sulrim= Much wind pours from
your mouth

Lle naa haran e' nausalle= you are king in your imagination

Amin feuya ten' lle= You disgust me

Lle holma ve' edan= you smell like a human (oooo, harsh smilies/biggrin.gif)

Llie n'vanima ar' lle atara lanneina= You're ugly and your mother dresses you funny

Once again, the Grey Company... This website does not use true Tolkien Elvish. It is based on it but is not the languages created by Tolkien. But then again, if you want to use them, the person you are insulting probably won;t know the difference. Just remember, it is Tolkien based, not Tolkien.

I insulted a girl who was making fun of me at a bookstore for liking Tolkien stuff.

Amilelya fummë nu rauco. "Your mother slept under a monster."

The funny thing was, this Elrond-lookalike who was standing right next to me burst out laughing because he understood Quenya, which bewildered the poor girl even more.

The great part was he also asked me out. Unfortunately, my parents did the exact same thing that Elrond did when he found out about Aragorn and Arwen. Mine claimed that the guy could be a serial killer in disguise and that I was too young to date. So, I resorted to screaming "Narelyë raucor!" at them repeatedly.

VanimaEdhel
05-29-2003, 08:08 AM
From what I've seen, guy who be short, most of these are Grey-Elvish expressions. Now, as we all know, Grey-Elvish is based loosely on Tolkien's language, but they are not actually the words of Tolkien. After consulting the Council of Elrond dictionary, "evil" in Quenya is: úmëa, ulca, saura (which refers more to being evil-smelling, or putrid). In Sindarin, it is: um, balch, and gûl (which is evil magic). An evil creature is "raug". Ooo! They have Noldorin now on the Council of Elrond. An evil creature is a "rhaug" or a "graug". In order to say "You are evil" in Sindarin, one could probably simply say "Le úmëa", as they tend not to use the verb "to be" much (similar to Russian in that regard, I suppose).

EDIT: and yes, "ulundo" means monster, as does "úvanimo", which means, literally, "a creature of Melkor". In Sindarin, it's "úan" or "ulunn". "Ulun" and "ulund" mean "monster" in Noldorin.

Hmm... I don't think elvish is that much of a good language to insult people in... However when my sisters get on my nerves I love to confuse them and insult them in one blow:

Thaur rakuo
abominable demon.

(I can't be bothered to get my elvish dic. out and check the spellings... sorry! smilies/frown.gif

Finwe

There are several different words for "monster." Both ulundo and rauco mean the same thing.

For those of you who are interested here is how you say "You're ugly and your mother dresses you funny" in real, Tolkien Sindarin:

"Le uanui a lin naneth hab le gladhaen."

The i in "lin" and the a in "hab" both have circumflexes over them. (circumflex=> ^ ) I hope you all can find this information useful.

I am not sure on the spelling but Losto'l means Empty Head smilies/biggrin.gif.

Sapphire_Flame
05-31-2003, 12:37 PM
In Sindarin or Quenyan? Because in Sindarin, Losto means "sleep".

VanimaEdhel
05-31-2003, 02:16 PM
Well, "dol" means head and "lost" means "empty". The "d" sound would probably be lost due to the many consonant mutations in Elvish. So yes, Lostol would mean "empty head".

Oh, and that's Sindarin.

VanimaEdhel

n'vanima

It might not even mean that. I thought that "u" was also the Quenya "not" or "dark". I could be wrong, of course, as I often am.

Sapphire_Flame
06-02-2003, 06:14 PM
U- can be a prefix in Sindarin, meaning "not" or implying a negative. (i.e. u-bedo = don't talk)

the guy who be short
06-03-2003, 12:29 PM
Well, n- is a common European prefix meaning not. So, perhaps this language uses it because Europeans (and Americans) will be comfortable with it.

I really think we ought to alert people somehow about Grelvish. It's starting to get very annoying.

I think the proper term is uvanima, because Morgoth's creations were called Uvanimar, or Ugly Ones (because they were monsters), and the singular of that term is "Uvanima." The prefix "u-" also means "not" or "opposite" in Quenya.

the guy who be short
06-14-2003, 03:14 AM
how do you say "you are" in quenya. Im taking lessons, but i havent done so for ages, and also pronouns is something like lesson 11! i know "na" means "is" (or "nar" plural) but how do you say "you are"? just thought it would be easier asking you people than doing about 15 lessons.

Tarien Ithil

I don't think there is a 'you are' in Quenya. If you want to say 'you are', you say 'lle'.

Isnt lle Sindarin? Well, i dont suppose it particularly matters, nobody can tell anyway. Or i could just say (insert name here) na uvanima.

Finwe
06-15-2003, 09:28 PM
It would have to be "na" (with an accent on the "a") because it is a singular "you." If it were plural, then it would be "nar." The full phrase is:

"Nal(yë) (whatever phrase that you want to add in)"

Yeah, I don't trust Grelvish in any shape or form. Go to Ardalambion (http://www.ardalambion.com), or to Fellowship of the Word-smiths (http://www.elvish.org) for correct elvish, both Sindarin and Quenyan. Fellowship of the Word-smiths also has stuff about Tengwar (with cool examples of Elvish calligraphy), plus all the Middle-earthean language lines from the Movies, with translations. My choir teacher would sometimes talk for the whole class period, and we would not sing that day, so once I said "antolle ulua sulrim" (much wind pours from your mouth) as I was leaving the room. Also once I told a girl to "auta miqula orqu" (go kiss an orc), and she said "umm...yes?" I thought it was quite funny.

I like Grey Company because it has a great variety of words for someone who wants to learn a few quick words of a pretty language. But I do agree that they should magnify that writing in very fine print under their homepage title. None the less, I won't begin to admonish every newbie that collects a handful of vocabulary from that site. Grelvish ... smilies/smile.gif

Anywho, I was wondering if anyone knows how to say some sort of more elegant insult/comebacks like "You'll forgive me if I don't get up" or "You understand if I don't hold my breath" Of course it isn't going to fit exactly but just something of that gist.

I guess we could break it down to translate:

"You'll understand if I don't..."

and then

"hold my breath" or "get up [to greet you]"

The people I know at academy and clubs do know a collection of elvish and it wouldn't be very subtle if I was to insult them in a language they knew! smilies/smile.gif But I've never heard these phrases before ... smilies/biggrin.gif

"Go kiss an orc" = "Bado orch echado meleth." (lit. "go make love to an orc")

I continue to not care for threads like this because the Elvish in them is highly suspect. In an effort to make sure we are remaining true to Tolkien, I would like to see each future post contain a reference of where the Elvish came from.

Bottom line - if it's not Tolkien, don't use it.

I am writing a Tolkeinesque fiction involving elves and human and I have been looking for an elvish insult to insinuate that someone is a harlot r prostitute. Does anyone know of one such insult? I really do not wish to just make up a word...

I'm sorry, Luthien Telryuna, but according to Tolkien's writings (History of Middle-earth, the volume with customs of the Elves) there is no such thing as harlotry or prostitution amongst Elves. I hope someone can give a more exact quote, but I'm away from home and don't have my books with me.

Estelyn is correct Luthien, the concept of "harlotry" is simply not an aspect of Elvish life. Here is an excellent primer on Middle-earth practices and taboos:
