Well, Daniel, to be fair, my full name is
Stacey Nadine Uffelman.
My parents made up the "Nadine" by putting together the names of my two grandmothers,
"Nancy" and "Augustine".
As far as meanings:Augustine="The exalted, sacred, or sublime."
Nancy="Grace."
Nadine="Hope."
Yike. "The exalted, sacred, or sublime."???
That sounds pretentious....

Yeah, names can be very interesting. My eldest sister decided my first name, and now that she is pregnant, I want to decide her child's name. But she won't let me. Probably scared that I'll call him John Ronald Reuel or Aragorn.

Samwise
It could be worse. You could tell her you wanted to name the little one Smeagol...or "better" yet, Gollum.
-------------------------------------------

Daniel Telcontar
What about Morgoth? Seems fitting, or what?
---------------------------------------------
Samwise
Ai! Now I wouldn't curse a little one with that...
this is going to be your neice or nephew, correct? Would you want to call it "Morgoth"?
-------------------------------------------
So...if you had the opportunity to name (a) child(ren) after something "Tolkienish", which names would you choose? smilies/wink.gif

I like the name Elanor. It's so pretty to listen to. I also like Éowyn, but I think she might get picked on if I name her that. Same thing with Éomer, Frodo, Bilbo, Merry, or Pippin. But Sam is a good name! Even if it is short for Samwise, which is definitely not that common of a name.

I'm definetly gonna name my child after a LotR name!!! I know, I'm crazy!

Well, I like Lothiriel, maybe that's a possibility. And Aradhel, very nice. Galadriel. Luthien, aw very nice. But seriously, I mean I don't want to make it too far fetched....I'm not sure yet. But I do like the name Ellisandra or Ella for short and that isn't Tolkien related.
Now for boys....
very hard now. Sam, good good. It isn't strange! Morgoth, POSSIBILITY! smilies/wink.gif
But Aragorn is nice, but naming a child that..? I don't know!

Nah...hey, I could see naming a boy Samwise. Sure, call him Sam, but why not? It's not all that strange. (I mean...Morgoth!?!?) No offense to the other Hobbits of the Fellowship, but...NO. smilies/wink.gif Gandalf? Heh...don't think so.
As to girls, hey, they were all pretty much named after flowers or jewels ('cept the Elves...can't see slapping "Galadriel" on a little girl...) smilies/tongue.gif

Actually, I heard of someone naming their kid Eowyn. It's a pretty name, I like it. But if I were to choose a LOTR name for my kid, I'd most likely give it as a middle name. Luthien is a beautiful middle name I think. It flows off the tongue just nicely, ya? (Erm...ignore the 'ya' I'm starting to put at the end of sentences. I'm playing FFX...Wakka influence...) Ahem! But yes. Can't see naming a kid Bilbo...wierd name now a days, don't ya think? Besides, weren't bilboes like, some sort of shackle and chain in Shakespeare's time?? Frodo too, is kind of wierd. Faramir is a nice middle name for a boy. Samwise Faramir ______. smilies/biggrin.gif Has a nice ring to it, ya? I'd think most would avoid the "evil smilies/evil.gif " names. Can't blame them either.

"Sauron! Get in here and do your homework!"

I just thought, if I named him/her Morgoth, then he/she had a destiny outlined.

I dont know 'bout boy names, but Sam and even Pippin isnt too bad.

I like Rosie, Maya, and even Arwen as a girl name. But there are alot of Elvish names I could use as Middle Names. And I actually like Éowyn. Itz really pretty.

I can imagine it now:

A small child enters a classroom and gives the teacher a paper. The teacher stands up and says, "Children! We have a new addition to our class. Please welcome Morgoth."

Small child laughs evilly and his eyes dart across the room as the other kids laugh at his name.

Next day:

Small child says, "But Gothmog ate my homework!" smilies/biggrin.gif

Samwise Faramir--Mmm. I could live with that. Hum. By the time I were married, hopefully it would be to someone with a less--erm--"heavy" last name than mine...
Suddenly he stopped as if listening. Frodo became aware that all was very quiet, inside and outside. Gandalf crept to one side of the window. Then with a dart he sprang to the sill, and thrust a long arm out and downwards. There was a squawk, and up came Sam Gamgee's curly head hauled by one ear.

Aosama, the Wandering Star

I like Laurelin (the golden tree thing) for a girl, and Peregrin or Faramir for a boy. I tend to lean more towards the romantic, middle-ages, knight-of-the-round-table type names. If I had an Eowyn, she could be called Wyn or Wynnie, and Laurelin could be Laurie or Lyn. The names of Tolkien's world are all so beautiful. But, my sister still thinks I'm crazy for planning to name a kid after a tree. smilies/smile.gif
But what about dragon names...

"Ancalagon! Stop roasting the forest, get in here and eat your supper!"

"Phew, Smaug, your breath stinks!"

They could incinerate pesky teachers, relatives, or siblings... and you could keep them occupied by asking them riddles.

Raefindel

Laurelin is beautiful, Aosama.

My kids are all named, and there'll be no more for me. 3 is enough! I do love my daughter's name. I know there are no J's in the Elven tongue, but I think it sounds Elven just the same. Her name is Jaden.

Frodo would be a good dog name. Sorry, I love Frodo, but it does sound like a dog's name! There's not many guy names that would be 'normal' enough. Agh, I don't care. If it were a boy, I'd be stuck on Samwise. Hom. Samwise Peregrin...mmm...sounds a tad royal.

It was Sam who had insisted on choosing him, declaring that Bill (as he called him) would pine if he did not come.
"That animal can nearly talk," he said, "and would talk, if he stayed here much longer. He gave me a look as plain as Mr. Pippin could speak it: if you don't let me go with you, Sam, I'll follow on my own. "

Hey, naming kids after LOTR places! That's kinda nifty! If I had a girl, I just might name her Lothlorien. smilies/biggrin.gif Her friends can call Lorie if they want. Or, what about Eryn (Eryn Lasgalan)? It's the same as Erin, just spelt much nicer and is Elvish! ^.^

Mordor, now there's a wierd name for a boy, eh? "Mordor, what did I say about being a haven for evil death lords?" "Sorry mom."

smilies/biggrin.gif Rivendell wouldn't work, though, would it? Dang. How 'bout...Luin? Hmmm...Eryn Luin _____ Heheh, I just might use that!

Great Ideas, they are all such lovely names, but what if the child was to grow up disliking Tokien? (which of course is not down to the parents because they taught the child all about ME as they were growing up and the child even speaks Elvish as a second language smilies/wink.gif)

Personally i like Lorien for a girl and Luin

I think its kinda cruel to give a child a queer name from something which (and yes, im aware the next sentence could potentially crucify me) could just be a fad. Its like when Pokemon were dead popular, some couple actually named their kid Bulbasaur. Can you imagine growing up with a name like Bulbasaur Smith? I mean, come on.

'cept the Elves...can't see slapping "Galadriel" on a little girl...
erm, actually i do have a friend called Galadriel, or Gilly for short. Theres also a book called The Great Gilly Hopkins (and no, my friends surname is not Hopkins, its Lizarbu)and the main character is called Galadriel.
There was a guy in my form teachers class a few years back called Peregrin, but as in the falcon. He was a gypsy tho and they all had cool names- his sister was called Star.
I guess a few of them wouldnt sound out of place- Bill for Bilbo, Sam for Samwise, or some like Luin or Eryn (would work for a girl to, its like Aeryn) which is dead pretty, but you could all to easily overdo it.
ArwenBaggins, Maya is a name, just spelt Maia. which is actually tolkienish enough- as in the maia and the istari

I'd be worried about my kid being turned off Tolkien/Star Wars because they didn't like their name, or were a little embarassed because of where it came from. I know there's a tendency these days for people to name their kids by anything they can think of. My mum teaches a girl that her parents called Juanna Marie - MarieJuanna, get it?
