Does no one around here appreciate the Harvard Lampoon's Parody? Quite a few people around think it's disrespectful, but I see it as an honour! If someone hasn't made fun of you in any way, then you really haven't made it in life! Just look at Air Farce! Anyways, does anyone want to talk to me about Bored of the Rings? I'm NOT, but the book was HiLArious!!

I read it once 15 years ago, but when I tried to read it again I found it more vulgar than I remembered. (Maybe I just understand the jokes now)

There are may here on the Downs who really like Bored of the Rings.

I definately remember Goodgulf standing at the door of Moria saying "OH! The KNOB!"

Hee! Yeah!

"Aiyee! It's a Thesaurus!"

"MAIM! Mutilate! Mangle! See: HARM!"

It may be vulgar, but it's funny as heck!

I think it's a book, isn't it? My friend's brother bought it and she looked at it, but it was a little too crude, and she warned me against it.

I'm not aware of a web-site, but then I've never searched for one either. My copy is so old the pages are falling out.

I got it from my school library (it IS a high school after all). Anyways, maybe it's just me, but I didn't find it that crude. . .but then again I'm just twisted. I dunno, I just found it funny, and that was it. Maybe I'm just in some need of mental help. Anyways, I love it even if it IS crude! smilies/biggrin.gif

I don't believe there is a website; if you want it you have to pay for it (I got my copy six years in a second-hand bookstore for 50 cents, though, so you don't necessarily have to pay a *lot*).

Parts of it were really funny, though since I was 17 then I had to have a lot of stuff explained to me (Goodgulf? Nesselrode? What're those?). The bits that I thought were really amusing were the song parodies and the parodies of the solemn exposition ("Lo, there have been many strange signs and portents. Last month at the full moon a blue-ribbon Holstein bore alive two insurance salesmen.") And as for the songs, it's become very difficult to read the actual songs without thinking "Heaven help the Working-Elf!" or "And since that day it has been said/In ballad, lay and poem/Only trust an Elf or Dwarf/As far as you can throw 'em."

So stylistically it's a lot of fun. ("Aiieee! A Ballhog is come!") But as for the plot parody...eh. It gets old very fast. The second half of the book introduces Eorache the warrior Nazi and is just incredibly dull. They probably would have done better to parody the more serious excerpts only or something along those lines. Probably there about 10 really funny pages out of 90 (though to be fair, that's not bad for any sort of humor writing).

It's worth picking up a copy. Don't spend more than a dollar, though.

I enjoy the classic dwarf song, "Hi Ho, Hi Ho, It's off to work we go..."

I've heard of an online parody site, though, not bored of the rings. It's called "stupidring.com". I'm not going to link it because I've never taken time to read anything on the site (I stumbled on it by accident) so if you go there you go at your own risk.

I read one of the shorter stories posted on StupidRing. I read the one that is titled something like, "The perils of Elijah". It is a very clever conception and includes all characters. It really amused me.
I have not tackled the main parody on that site because they have basically re-written every chapter & I don't have time to read it all right now. A friend of mine says that it's really funny though.

I am sorry to admit that I have an original copy of the book in my hand, and that I am abou to post the entire song of "I Sit on the Floor and Pick my Nose." Well, perhaps some of you will enjoy it. (Sigh, a comedian's lot is not a happy one.)

"I sit on the floor and pick my nose
and think of dirty things
Of deviant dwarves who suck their toes
and elves who drub their dings.

I sit on the floor and pick my nose
and dream exotic dreams
Of dragons who dress in rubber clothes
and trolls who do it in teams.

I sit on the floor and pick my nose
and wish for a thrill or two
For a goblin who goes in for a few no-nos
Or an orc with a thing about glue.

And all of the while I sit and pick
I think of such jolly things
Of whips and screws and leather slacks
Of frottages and stings."

Here's a project: post the entire book in this thread! Then all you less-fortunate folk can go out and not have to spend $12.50 on it at B&N (like I did).

"Outlook hazy. Ask again later."

I would, but my 'rents won't let me stay on the 'net long enough to do it. Perhaps a list of as many characters as I can remember is in order. (See if you can figure out who they are in LotR.)

Dildo
Frito
Goddam
Spam
Goodgulf
Lavalier
Cellophane
Schlob
Hashberry
Tim Benzedrine
The Nozdrul
Serutan
The Vee-Ates
Bromosiel(sp?)
Farashlax(sp?)
The Ballhog
Orlon
Eorache
Arrowroot son of Arrowshirt
Gimlet son of Groin
Legolam
Moxie
Pepsi
Sorhed

(That's all I can think of for right now, I might post more later.)

Oh, I forgot about Garfinkel.

"Come out with your hands up" said the captain sternly.
Frito bowed low. "Come in and get me," he said, making the correct reply.

Ah, yes, the good old Harvard Lampoon! I say they did a damn good job on that parody! What would we do for entertainment without goddam and Spam? And let's NOT forget the "Thesaurus"!

Yup! Bored of the Rings, it is, but boring, it ISN'T. Let's say, if you liked Austin Powers, you'll like this thing. It's crude at times, yes, but overall, a great read! smilies/biggrin.gif

Check it out from the library, if you can--I didn't care for it much. I wasn't offended by it, just kind of disappointed. I guess I was expecting "Princess Bride" parody and instead got "Holy Grail", if you catch my meaning. Good once or twice, but not over and over, and the goofy outnumbers the clever. Which is bad for me, since I like to read books more than once (or twice), so it wasn't a good investment. Though it does have its good parts, so if you get it on sale, then go for it! Just try not to pay full price.

I love that book! I also think that poem is one of the funniest things out there! I got it from a friend as a joke and Now we both quote it constantly.

I stumbled across a Bored of the Rings fansite a while ago. I don't remember the site address, so I can't post a link, but if you go to google.com and type "Bored of the Rings" you can probably find it. It's a little too crude for me.

I shall have to read it, my dad says he read it a while ago and he liked it, so off with this weeks pay to my local book store. And if they dont have it, i will just have to get another volume of the History of Middle Earth.

Who is Éowyn in it?

While at the Eden project, both me and my friend were amused to find an Arrowroot plant... Okay, just thought you'd like to know. Anyhow, I love that book! I read it when I was... **Counts back the years** Uh, 9. And understood about... 5% as had not read LotR! Read it again recently, after reading LotR, and opps... I can't belive my faher let me read that when I was 9!
Also, did you know about the SOddit? That is hillarious! I think I prefere the Soddit. But Luthien has stole my copy of it.. Grr... **Hits Luthien**

*Shudder* Beware, Nimrothel.

If the book is half as vulgar and insulting and defiles sacred work of Tolkien as STUPIDRING.COM that I went at my own risk does, you don't want to see it.

God, and I thought Neopet Roleplayers as blasphemers.

Actually, I think "The Soddit" is by the Harvard Lampoon too. They mentioned that a parody of "The Hobbit" was in the works in the Foreward of "Bored of the Rings." So I wouldn't be too worried about its contents. smilies/wink.gif
