Before I address the original question, I must respond to something else that has been said.

LEGOLAS BEAT GLORFINDEL??!!

Maybe if Legolas had an army and Glordindel had no weapons. Glorfindel was a reincarnated Noldorian elf-lord who had killed a balrog!!! The witch king was scared of him!! He could beat a wood-elf, prince or not, any day of the week.

Feanor versus Fingolfin... I'd say that would be an absolutely amazing fight!! Unless somebody beats me to it, I'll give some supporting evidence later when I'm at home with my books, but I believe that Feanor would win.

No kidding about Glorfindel--he was a b** a** (hence the reason Arwen should NOT have been the one to save Frodo, thank you very much!).

(I think if it came to blows between the 2 women with a healthy bit of rivalry, and I do NOT mean cat-fight, you'd see Arwen's true ability and fire spark to high flame...I'd hate to be in a fight with that she-elf).

Figolfin all the way, i mean cmon, he struck at Morgoth (a VALAR!) 7 times. Feanor got mortally wounded in one battle and it doesn't even say how.

Sam vs. Merry...hmm... I'm saying Merry here. He did strike at the witch king even though he was scared out of his skull. Sam nevr did anything in battle. That, and Merry's bigger.

Have you forgotten about Sam's fight with Shelob? But I still agree that Merry would win, 'cause it takes a lot to spur Sam on, and Merry seemed to enjoy a fight more (in the Scouring episode). So Sam wouldn't be motivated enough to beat Merry, who is of course bigger than him and no pansy in a fight.

Uhhh, Elrond wasn't a man. And I would say Galadriel here, she is the one of the greatest of all elves. She did battle against the host of Feanor as a matter of fact, at the first kinslaying. Great of mind and body was she.

Actually I remember a description of Elrond that described him as several things and included that he was a mighty warrior. He fought in battles and was descended from mighty warriors. Galadriel was great and all, but no way could she take Elrond in a fight. (I think they didn't do a good enough job showing that side of Elrond in the movie)

I still say Merry could beat Sam...they have similar strengths but Merry owns the "tie-breaker": size.

What about Merry and Pippin? They're the same size. I'd say Pippin, just because he faced a troll head on while Merry snuck up on the Witch King from behind.

What about Éomer and Faramir? Or Boromir and Faramir?

Hmmm, Éomer and Faramir its hard to say. Each are princes and have good experince in battle. In a close combat fight though i'd put my money on Faramir. (It's not that I don't like Éomer in fact he's my favorite character). However, as fair as being a better general i'd say Éomer is the better tactician. I'd have to vote the B-Man over Faramir though, Farmair is a mighty good woodsmen but not the warrior that Bormoir was.

How bout Beorn vs. Aragorn?

Man, that's close. But, in the end, my money's on Glorfindel. What decided it for me was their respective face-offs with the witch-king. Against Glorfindel, he chose the flood of Elrond, even though he had his Riders with him. Against Gandalf, I believe the line is "Old fool! Do you not know Death when you see him? Die now and curse in vain!" or something like that. Glorfindel wins. Although several square miles are leveled in the process.
Oh, and

It would be a close fight but Boromir would beat Gimli (barely). Treebeard would do considerable damage to a Nazgul, and Nazgul are really amazing, but I'd have to say Treebeard, he would definetly win the fight, but I don't think he would kill a Nazgu, those guys just don't die. Saruman vs. Balrog...thats an interesting one. It depends quite obviously more on what time period. Saruman at his height, or Saruman at the depth of his corruption? And it also depends obviously on which Balrog. Durin's Bane I can see being beaten by a decaying Saruman. Gothmog and Saruman at the height of both their powers would be an interesting battle (maybe Saruman could talk his way out of it? smilies/wink.gif ).

Hey, Knight of Gondor, sometimes it's fun to think of good-hearted battles between characters on the same side, don't spoil our fun!

And also, Warbringer: um, just 'cause the Nazgul freaked out a poor hobbit does NOT mean he's a coward. I mean, those guys are scared of no one save Glorfindel and maybe a few others, so don't diss the poor Gaffer. Besides, these are supposed to be fair fights (no dogs etc...). In my opion Sam would kick butt! It doesn't take much to get Sam going.

And isn't one of the many meaning of Lord of the Rings that the little guy can often beat the big bully. Size DOSN'T matter.
Shelob was WAY bigger then Sam and that didn't stop him.

Of course if it was for Frodo Sam would most definatly win. Sam would have faced all the forces of Sauron for Frodo and would have taken down a good number of them before he fell himself.

Well, I know that this is not totally pure, but I am dying to know what the general opinion is on a fight between Darth Vader and the Witch King.

Well all if you start watching to what they really are Darth Vadre would not stand a change because he is just a mortal with no real powers.(oooh he can move stuff around big deal datr vader shmart vader) So the witch king will beat his butt all the way back to his pathetic little spaceship.

(Sorry I simply higly dislike starwars. It's stupid. People fighting with TL-lights give me a break.)

I think "y'all" is much worse language than #$^%, #&$^, or even donkey-$^#&%^ &*&%-eater, for that matter.

Feanor vs Fingolfin is an interesting one. Feanor's fully crazy, I'll admit that, and probably has the best sword, armour etc. that were ever made ever, but Fingolfin was more into studying the arts of combat. Feanor was always in his workshop. I'm in Fingolfin's corner.

Arwen vs Luthien is one slap-fight I'd really like to see!!

The Balrog would probably win, since Ungoliant eats light, and he's made from shadow....but then Ungoliant did eat herself.,...at least I think that was what it said.....and she wasn't exactly light.

I didn't literally meant reincarnation, but as luthien was the morningstar of her people, Arwen is the evenstar, and the image of luthien. furthermore, they both shared the same doom: they both fell in love with a mortal and died. Reincarnation was just the best word I came on last night, and i admit it wasn't a very good choice to use here.

Hmmm id say Aragorn, as much as i would like Éomer to win, i think Aragorn would probably kill him. As for Boromir and Faramir, id say Boromir... i have no other reason than i just like Boromir better...

Did anyone ever answer that Morgoth versus Manwe question. That would be a fight to shake the earth..lots and lots of people would seriously be wiped into oblivion. In the end they'd probably both annihilate each other. I have to say, since Tolkien said that he was brother to Manwe and almost equal in power, that Morgoth may not outright win this battle. It would also depend on if anyone stepped in on another's behalf. If it was a straight fight..i dunno. I'm being honest here...I'd love for Morgoth to kick Manwe back to the Outer Circles and back again....
