Think more along the lines of what Horse-Maiden guessed.

Nuranar

Tol Eressëa?

(Am I allowed two guesses?)

the phantom
02-06-2003, 04:23 PM
Not Tol Eressea. Remember, think along the lines of what Horse-Maiden guessed. (and I suppose you can guess as much as you want)

If you guys don't have it when I get home from work, I'll give a really nice hint smilies/wink.gif .

OK, so I guessed twice, but both are probably wrong anywho

Lady_Báin
02-07-2003, 03:30 AM

Horse-Maiden of the Shire

Gothmog, lord of balrogs?

Horse-Maiden of the Shire
02-08-2003, 11:06 AM
Yeah, that was it! I guess you could really only get it if you read the Silmarillion, and i am very sorry to anybody if they havent read it and wanted to guess. But youre up next!

Nevvasaiel
02-08-2003, 11:24 AM
ok, here goes:

No beginning, no end
Haunted, you are, until you have found what it is you search for
none ever hear my voice
save for whispers in the dark
my possibilities are endless
as vast as the knowledge the soul of the world can contain

what am I?

*this is related to Lotr, by the way.
good luck! smilies/wink.gif

The only thing that would seem to fit is Iluvatar...

If it was not LOTR related, I'd have guessed fate.

Manardariel
02-08-2003, 07:14 PM
Wow, some good riddles have been going on here... for the last one, could it be The Ring? Or maybe dreams????? *think*

bombur
02-08-2003, 07:38 PM
Actually I think it works...

"No beginning, no end"
That is Eru the one

"Haunted, you are,"
Men are haunted by the Ones gift

"until you have found what it is you search for"
Till they recieve it... die.

"none ever hear my voice save for whispers in the dark"
Even Manwe, I seem to remember, consulted Iluvatar by listening to the winds.

"my possibilities are endless as vast as the knowledge the soul of the world can contain"
What is that if not a creator god?

Might not be right, but come to think of it, it DOES fit... Is it right?

Nevvasaiel
02-09-2003, 09:56 AM
wow bombur.
i never thought of that, but it fits perfectly doesn't it? maybe even more so than the actual answer.
but no, sorry, that isn't what i was thinking of when i made up the riddle.
(although it could have been smilies/biggrin.gif)

the clue, lies in In the dark
think of a phrase with these words.

lord of dor-lomin
02-09-2003, 01:23 PM
the void??

Horse-Maiden of the Shire
02-09-2003, 01:50 PM
Hm....ill take a wild stupid guess....the spirit of sauron?

Nevvasaiel
02-10-2003, 08:41 AM
nope, sorry, none of the above.

think of something that's more well-known,
hint: something to do with our furry-footed little friends.

Speaking of riddles, that was a good one Nevvasaiel! Here's mine....

In you I dwell, deep in your soul,
though you don't always realize I'm there.
While I'm forgotten, peace you can have,
but once I'm awakened, you must beware.

02-11-2003, 08:48 PM
Gollum speaking to Smeagol?

Nuranar
02-11-2003, 09:03 PM
Is the speaker an emotion?

Is the one being addressed a particular person?

lord of dor-lomin
02-12-2003, 12:19 AM
I suppose you could call it an emotion.

And no, it's not one particular person.

Nevvasaiel
02-12-2003, 05:33 AM
Thanks, lord of dor-lomin.

I guess, power or greed, to whoever comes under the influence of the ring?

the phantom
02-12-2003, 10:02 AM
The word "beware" reminded me of something someone said to Legolas (maybe Galadriel said it), "beware of the sea" or something like that. And I also remember Legolas saying something about never being satisfied (or at peace) with the woods again since he heard the ocean birds. So it seems to me that the sea, or more accurately, the sea-longing, seems to fit the riddle fairly well.

So I'll say the sea-longing talking to an elf.

lord of dor-lomin
02-12-2003, 02:51 PM
This riddle was supposed to take a longer time than that!!

Go ahead, Mr Phantom.

the phantom
02-13-2003, 09:35 AM
It's the phantom, not Mr!! Get it right!!

Well, here's mine.

I've journeyed far and wide
with a steward as my guide
he gave me one last breath
then I went unto my death

raci
02-13-2003, 03:28 PM
Horn of Gondor (Boromir's)?

Horse-Maiden of the Shire
02-13-2003, 04:26 PM
Could be....but Denethor was the steward, not Boromir. Fits though.

the phantom
02-13-2003, 11:25 PM
Sorry about the confusion. Actually, the horn is exactly what I had in mind. The horn had been passed down, so it had been carried by stewards, so that's why I put in that part. When the next line says "he", it's referring to Boromir, not to "a steward" in the line before. It's a riddle, so I didn't want to make the wording too easy (but apparantly, it was anyway).

Go ahead, raci!

lord of dor-lomin
02-17-2003, 01:15 PM
Raci? Are you there? Well, if Raci doesn't go by tonight, I guess I'll post a riddle.

the phantom
02-18-2003, 11:44 PM
Let's try to get this started. I'll go again.

Sometimes I'm a house, sometimes I'm used to fight,
Sometimes I am dead, sometimes I give light

[ February 19, 2003: Message edited by: the phantom ]

Tigerlily Gamgee
02-19-2003, 01:53 AM
wood?

people build with wood for houses
wood can be used as a club for fighting
wood can be dead
You can use wood to create a torch to create light

the phantom
02-19-2003, 08:45 AM
Correct, Tigerlily! (I would've accepted wood or trees)

Go right ahead.

Tigerlily Gamgee
02-19-2003, 11:50 PM
A fate that cannot be denied
Some crave me though they can not have me
Others despise my existance for what they can lose in time
For things that you love can just pass before your eyes
And be gone before you can stop it

I know it doesn't ryhme or anything, but it really fits the music I am listening to right now.

Annunfuiniel
02-20-2003, 12:43 AM
Death?
-obviously a fate that cannot be denied
-immortal beings may crave it(?!) but cannot have it
etc.

I know, I'm so not good with these... smilies/wink.gif

Poetry?
Powerfull without a sword
Caressing and sweet without a hand
thin air filled with life
and magic fills the land

Poetry can move you powerfully, making you see the world in a new light. Poetry is often written to a boyfriend/girlfriend. When poetry is spoken, it seems to fill everything with sadness, or happiness, greif, or anger, whatever the poem is about. Poetry can tell a story of a magical place.

Saucepan Man's riddle:

The foundation of castles

What am I?

Okay.....it's NOT...

Imagination

"The old tales"

books? Records of history

the Red Book of Westmarch

Isengard

A library

the halls of record at gondor

simply the earth

Middle-Earth

The Stars

The Universe

Soil

Rock

A mountain

a mine

grass

brick or mortar

the land

SO.....is it.....

Construction, Kingdoms, cities, a garden or dreams?

(Yes, those were all desperate guesses 'cause I really have NO clue) smilies/wink.gif

The Saucepan Man

Nooooooooooooooooo! smilies/smile.gif

OK, even I'm getting tired of it now. smilies/rolleyes.gif

So, in a final effort to move things on:

1. It can be used to build castles (of a kind).

2. People lie on it sometimes when they are trying to "darken" themselves.

3. Children play with it.

4. It can be used as part of a device to measure time.

Now, surely someone must get it ...

... please? smilies/biggrin.gif

SaucepanMan's got it. Garden it is.

The Saucepan Man
03-12-2003, 08:52 AM
Hoooray ... Oh, that means I have to think of another one, doesn't it?

... Well, since I can't, why don't we carry on with Manardariel's from earlier?

I bear not pearl, nor silver
not even gem or gold
but what I carry treasure
because new life I hold
Who am I?

I was going to say an egg, but it's a "who". Is is a mother-to-be?

Annunfuiniel
03-12-2003, 09:09 AM
It could be Sam with Galadriel's gift, the box which contained soil from her garden.

aragornreborn
03-15-2003, 09:23 PM
I also think it's birth related, but if it's not mother-to-be, is it a womb?

Manardariel
03-17-2003, 01:25 PM
No, Annufuniel has it Too easy! *complains*

Annunfuiniel
03-18-2003, 03:02 PM
No no, not too easy, just perfect for me! smilies/biggrin.gif

Pain have I brought
for one that bred me
I often can be bought
but then it's likely "we"
if I'm forgotten
my face will turn dead
so use me often
I shall grace your head.

Oh, that's really bad! smilies/rolleyes.gif smilies/biggrin.gif
Edit: and now even worse...

Is it the ring?

Annunfuiniel
03-19-2003, 01:01 AM
Ring is a very good guess but not the right one. This one is not Tolkien related. I edited it 'cause the last lines were a misunderstanding, so forget about them. smilies/smile.gif

Roses?

Thorns might bring pain,
You buy them in bunches,
If you don't pay attention to them they die,
They look pretty in girls' hair.

A little tenous. Oh well.

Annunfuiniel
03-22-2003, 03:31 AM
Rose is a nice answer though still not the one I'm thinking of. It is something tangible and inanimate...

Garen LiLorian
03-22-2003, 08:39 AM
Gold? If so, please explain how it's "bred" but other that that;

Gold crowns on the head,
A forgotten golden coin's face would stop shining eventually,
Buy and spend bunches of coins usually instead of singles.

I liked roses better smilies/biggrin.gif

Annunfuiniel
03-22-2003, 09:27 AM
Yep, I liked the roses better too! smilies/biggrin.gif
But gold is close in one respect; it is something valuable.

Lady_Báin

jewels

The Saucepan Man
03-24-2003, 05:49 AM
Ah, is it a pearl?

Pearls bring pain to the oysters where they form, don't they? They are rarely purchased singly, but together as pearl necklaces etc. Not sure about the face turning dead, but maybe they go dull if not treated. And they are used in ornaments to grace the head, such as necklaces, tiaras etc.

So, is the answer a pearl?

Annunfuiniel
03-24-2003, 07:29 AM
Yes yes yes, Saucepan Man, it is pearl! smilies/smile.gif
And that "my face will turn dead" -line; it's said that if you don't use your pearls they will lose their shining. True or false? I dunno.
But the stage is yours, Saucepan! smilies/smile.gif

TheBladeThatWasBroken
03-24-2003, 09:32 PM
yes, it's true, certain gems lose their beauty after some years, and often that is how you can tell whether a 50 y/o gem is real or fake, by how shiny they are

and also, the surface of some gems corrode if they came in contact with oil, that's why you should never handle valuable jewels w/ ur hand

yeah...i learned those from reading mystery novels

The Saucepan Man

OK, here we go.

White I am, or Grey
Or Black

But in my absence
All is Blue

A cloud or clouds??

Himaran
03-25-2003, 08:25 PM
Yes, clouds definantly. Here's my attempt:

A fire is lit
When I am around
Not one that burns down trees and such
but a fire that burns inside of you

Aye, I burn at your mind
consuming you; until you can see nothing else
Clouding your vision

Who or what am I?

I thought we had to wait for Saucepan Man to confirm my answer? We haven't waited very long....
I don't mind if someone else takes my turn though......riddles are not usually one of my talents! smilies/smile.gif

The Saucepan Man
03-26-2003, 07:57 AM
You are correct on both counts, Eruanna. smilies/smile.gif

The answer to the riddle is indeed a cloud.

And yes, people are s'posed to wait for confirmation of the answer and then its the turn of the person who first got it right, which was you in this case. smilies/smile.gif

Well, to take a stab at Himeran's riddle:
A fire is lit

Yes, I was supposed to be in class, but who cares?! smilies/biggrin.gif I just felt like taking the day off!

Here's my riddle...

I am very warm, but I'm not very caring

til he would have brought all to ruin save for the grey.

Ok, I'm really rubbish at riddles (maybe I should try alliterative verse!)

Here goes:
"Hand of Silver"
was my other name.
A worker of metal
In Gwaith-i-Mirdain.
A craftsman supreme,
I created the three.
I was slain by the Dark lord
And passed over the sea.

Eruanna

The sugar seems to be working Horse-Maiden, it was indeed Celebrimbor smilies/smile.gif

Raci...The Three refers to the Elven rings...but good guess with the Silmarils.

Horse-Maiden of the Shire
06-10-2003, 09:15 PM
Ah, yes. Sugar is my friend. Mwehehehe!
Erm..anyways. Pardon my horrid riddle:

We sang a song a time ago
We fought a quite long time ago
We welcomed dwarves (with reluctance!)
A wizard
And hobbits!
Who are we?

Gandalf and Bilbo,or Gandalf with Frodo, Sam, Merry and Pippin?

Horse-Maiden of the Shire

Oh, maybe I should word it differently...now that I read it over it doesn't sound the way it's supposed to...

We sang a song a time ago
We fought a quite long time ago
We welcomed dwarves (with reluctance!)
We welcomed a wizard
We welcomed hobbits!
And many other folk.
Who are we?

Orofaniel
06-11-2003, 10:39 AM

i also believe that it is the elves.

Horse-Maiden of the Shire

I'm very nitpicky on this one. Elves it is, but from where?

Mippin
06-11-2003, 05:00 PM
could it be elves from Lothlorien? after all they did try to blindfold Gimli...and they seemed to look to Gandalf, though he was not there.. and they welcomed the hobbits as well

Orofaniel
06-12-2003, 11:12 AM
Is it the elves from Rivendell??
